White Scars Neophyte

I'm 50 miles away from the nearest hobby store that stocks GW stuff and hosts 40k games and about $500 short of an army at the moment, but over the past year or two I've fallen gradually in love with the 40k setting, and I can no longer resist the lure of at least attempting to play the game. The White Scars' playing style is best suited to my temperament and the whole "Mongolian hordes on motorcycles" thing they've got going on is great fun, so I'm starting with them. Over the next several months I'll be assembling my initial force. When (If?) I have disposable income in much greater abundance, Sisters of Battle and Traitor Guard are next on my list of priorities in terms of army-building, on account of my love for what they represent in the context of the 40k universe, even though the one's still running on a 3E Codex and the other can't be represented at all under current rules except by refluffing regular guardsmen (I mention the latter for completeness's sake, though obviously it doesn't fall under the aegis of B&C).

I'll warn that I'm a fluff-junkie and an aesthete, and whether choosing bike squads over devastator squads or lightning claws over a thunder hammer, I prefer striking with speed and style over cumbersome force, even when cumbersome force is the best option. I'm not here to win, necessarily, so much as enjoy an elegant battle, whether winning or losing.

Yeah, I'm probably Slaaneshi at heart. I just can't stand Noise Marines. :HQ:

Welcome!

When I started, there wasn't much in the way of stores and the only place to play was a friend's kitchen.

Good luck starting your army!

Seems we have a bit in common! Glad to have you aboard.

Indeed! Great to see another White Scars player, the paucity of conversion bits and transfers for them relative to many other First Founding chapters had me a little worried I was alone here.

I took a look at your WiP thread, I love the bionics on your Tac Squad Sergeant and mounted Kor'sarro Khan stand-in (seems to me a chapter that doesn't use Dreadnoughts would have a lot more reason to slap bionics on wounded marines), and what you're doing with the Land Raider is brilliant. My prospective 1500 point list (the one I can't afford -_- ) has a Land Raider Redeemer, and I'm planning to paint giant red lightning bolts down each side of the vehicle like an enormous chapter symbol (I've not yet decided whether to throw in the yellow cross-bar). :)

Well, according to fluff, the yellow cross bar is only forgone on Scout Squads.

Right, but since I'm going to have to turn the whole thing sideways, more or less, to fit it down the length of a Land Raider, it's not exactly standard to begin with. I think I might even put the bar through it vertically at the sponsons.

If I don't get venerable dreadnoughts to greeble up, I'm at least going to have some fun decoing my Land Raider. -_-

I have been playing for about a year and a half now and it is the fluff that drove me into this game! The conversion possibilites of the White Scars, another aspect I love, was just a bonus! I convert my bikers from the Ravenwing box set. It works rather well. I am glad to see someone else who loves Lightning Claws over Thunder hammers! Welcome and good luck in the 41st milenium!

Well, I hate to self serving but if you like the White Scars and you like Slaanesh, then check out the Dornian Heresy White Scars which link the two together B)

Don't you dare even consider such heresy! For the Emperor brother!

Good to see another White Scar player.

I've made some progress recently with my Heresy-era White Scars - check out the link in my sig. :jaw:

The Ravenwing bikes are beautiful (and, thanks to the box set, more economically available), but I'm a little scared of starting with base models that have so much chapter-specific iconography (the same fear holds me back from converting Space Wolves to White Scars like Typical Cricket has... though his results look great)... I'm afraid I might leave too many Dark Angelish features behind. The bog standard bikes aren't much to write home about, but at least they provide a blank canvas to build on instead of forcing you to scrape off somebody else's paint first (so to speak).

Eh, since I haven't bought much of anything yet, I could still go either way. I keep waffling back and forth over the whole issue.

Can anybody really "like" a Chaos God? :eek

I find the concept of the Dornian Heresy project interesting and I can see the potential for Slaaneshi corruption of the White Scars (or Khorne, or Tzeentch... Nurgle not so much), but I think I'm keeping my force in canon, in the 41st Millennium, and free of taint. "For the Khan and against the False Emperor!" doesn't have quite the same ring.

Ooh, nice. Heresy-era conversions always fascinate me. May I ask where the Stormseer's horse skull came from?

It's from the tomb kings horse skeleton cavalry. :P

Have a look at The Great Crusade forum for a whole load of Pre- and Heresy-era stuff.

I'll be converting some ravenwing bikers for their Raven Guard project over the next few weeks, so I'll put up a tutorial on how to convert bikes to have an adjustable front wheel (which I think makes it look much better) soonish.

I normally don't reply to Introductions, but I've always had a soft spot for White Scars. I also like Alpha Legion, Word Bearers and Iron Hands, go figure.

Anyways, I think there need to be more White Scars banners. I don't know how many people are talking because you all have the same avatar.

Welcome White Scars or Ulaagan Suuder (Mongolian for The Red Shadow) was my first army. I used grey knight weapons as pw or pf on my bikes, i like my guys riding around looking like the have spears or short lances. Some advice magnatize your special weapon guys right arm so you can swap out easy and you can also magnatize the side car of the attack bikes. I don't win all the time with my bikes but it is a feared list at the store I play at. All my squad symbols are Mongolian too. The Raven Wing battle force box is great. You get all the Dark Angels stuff, but it comes with all the vanilla stuff to make non Dark Angels bikers. I bought 4 of these to make my bike army. I have also built a four wheeler for khan and mounted a dragon's head on the front.

The thing about the ravenwing box set is that it actually allows one to build bikes completely devoid of Dark Angels iconography. Admittedly it comes with a lot of dark angels stuff it also has plain bikes. This has left me with a generous amount of bit which have actually helped in several kit bashes I have done. For instance I made a chaplain out of bits for the box set and the com and squad sprue. A nice feature in my opinion is a couple of gothic looking big books. Which are, I think, supposed to go on the Land Speeder but I put White Scars transfers on them instead so I have my chaplain reading a book!

Also I'll second the idea of more White Scars banners! Talk about confuseing! I had to look back to see who was talking at least five times!

True - all the models in the Ravenwing boxed sets are just the normal vanilla models. Then you also get some upgrade sprues. Not only that, but a lot of it isn't really Dark-Angels specific, and if it is, it's easy to make it fit with White Scars. For example, it comes with parts to spiff up your bikes, like the wings on the front and stuff. I only used one, for the Bike Sergeant, and the rest I just built normally. I think it looks cool. :D

Oh, thanks muchly for the Ravenwing box set advice. That should go a good way toward making this list more economical. The presentation confused me.

As for the avatar confusion... yeah. It's a problem. I guess I'll switch avis, since it's likely that White Scars topics are going to draw numerous White Scars players, thus leading to yet more chaos. Hrm.

EDIT: There, our Master of the Hunt should do nicely.

Yes, all hail the Great Kor'sarro Khan!! The Ravenwing box set actually provided me with enough bits to Kit bash a Very nice looking Kor'sarro and Moondrakkan! Based on the picture in Codex:SM of course. I have never seen a pic of his bike in any fluff picture or even a description!!! I move that GW needs to get off UltraSmurfs and start paying attention to the White Scars!

We DID have the coolest role in the Horus Heresy! The Ride of the Khan!

First off, welcome to the B&C pathetic loyalist! Worry not, you shall see the true glories of Chaos Eternal in time.

Secondly, Slaanesh isn't just Noise Marines. You could have a perfectly normal group of Chaos Marines dedicated to Slaanesh. Heck, I'm gonna make a warband of Slaaneshi renegades that focus on bikes, raptors, and close combat squads (eventually). It'll still have Noise Marines, but only because I'm a sucker for the whole idea of "we're shooting sound at you! :( "

Although I'm not a big fan of Slaanesh myself, he is correct. With the Chaos codex, you can make your entire army Slaaneshi without having to buy a single Noise Marine. I'd reccomend being CC oreintated, although seeing as you are a White Scars and Slaaneshi fan I don't think that should be a problem.
