Scratch built Nurgle Blight Drones

Recommended Posts

So yeah im finally starting to get back into my Demons army since the news of the release of slaanesh seekers and horrors, which sparked me into looking at what else is out there to make or model since i still have to wait a lil bit for the release of the new stuff.

i hadnt been to the forgeworld webpage in a while and i was surprised to see some awesome new stuff. upon seeing i could get land speeder type units with maw cannons and TL reapers with armor 12 which looked amazinly easy to make i started to think of ideas.

so here it is, a semi normal WIP post/tutorial....Enjoy!

sorry for the crummy pictures they are from my phone since my wife misplaced my camera >_<

ill try to get more detail pics later of how i did the skin

materials-

miliput standard yellow-chosen for its softness

green stuff

hard heavy guage wire

various small wires and flexible rubber gasket making material

electrical tape

paper towels

cotton q tips

bits-

defiler exhaust vent

land raider las cannon

melta bomb

energy cell from leman russ sprue?

grilled flood light

now in regards to the materials used there are tons of possiblities for replacements. but with the pictures and your own imagination you can see where you could just replace this or that with what you have around your house. the only thing i bought new was more miliput because i used most of it on another project. this is meant to be a very cheap model

ill update the materials and bits list once start doing the armor plates and propellers

some stiff wire i found in the garage i cut it into a 6 inch strip ad bent to a similar shape of the drones in a picture

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0718.jpg

i started on the tail end and used paper towels to tight wrap around the wire, taking more raps to gain thickness as i got to the head. i used a small bit of tape to hold the previous sections as i got the next towel ready.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0719.jpg

after i got the basic body shape i tight wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape. electrical tape is great since it stretches which will make it more stiff.

*note* dont use or buy your exspensive tape, get the walmart/dollar store special stuff itll be just fine for this

Ok heres the weapons, i went with what i thought would be easy and quick and what i had an abundance of. clip the center section out of the defiler exhaust pipes and clean them up. youll have to cut out some of the bottom and expand the channel inside to fit onto the las cannon frame. then once everything is cleaned up and glued together you can clip off the back portion right past the barrel of the las cannon

now there is all kinds of ways to come up with the weapons here. like some hard plastic tubing and attaching some of hundreds of demon/dragon looking gun muzzles from the chaos sprues. i know most chaos players have a ton of those. you could use just tubing and knick and file them to look like rusting pipes/barrels.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0722.jpg

i attached this with miliput in preparation of when i build up for the other bulbous protrusions, pipes/wires and parts. I chose the softer miliput since itll be easier to use on the soft frame im working on. the only problem here is youll have to build up certain parts and take breaks to let things harden since if you touch this stuff in the slightest it can deform or mark what you just did. i left the top of the drone uncovered since thats where the armor plates will be. ill attach those and then do the final putty once those are on.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0723.jpg

here i started to work up the head and weapon areas with wires and stuff. to get semi smooth skin effects i used a wet q tip to smooth folds, seems and finger prints. i find its really a great tool to form lumps and dents. once the putty is about half way set i get the putty knife out to sculpt the lacerations, fine folds/wrinkles. dont be scared your making the lines too deep because when the model is sitting 2 ft away on the gaming youll notice them for sure. too shallow or fine ends up getting lost in the layers of paint i find. but its easy to mess it up when youre modelling the thing up close.

more will come later when i brainstorm the propellers and armor plates.

alright heres some more progress, i had gotten side tracked a bit with a demon prince idea that popped into my head.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0726.jpg

for the armor plating i used some masking to to cover the top part of the model and made outlines with

a marker to use for cutting out some card from a dreadnaught box and then glued them on. when you fold the card around the body the top will stick up some and make an overlapping lip on top of the lower plate. this method might not be the best but sometimes i just get an idea in my head that will probably work and i try it. once the card was done i just went about putting the putty over the cutouts.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0730.jpg

ok for the hard part. so making a card cutout for the whole front plate was impossible so i just had to make it with all putty, which surprisingly turned out ok.

after most of my standard yellow milliput i went to get some more and decided to try out

the white. which im so glad i did because its way more stiff and still can be smoothed over

with a bit of water like the yellow stuff. i really wish i had this for the other plates i made. the only negative i see is its a couple bucks more to

buy.

after i let the front around the eye hole dry ill clean up the edges and put some flaring and corrosion marks.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0731.jpg

using the same wire i use to make the "spine", i made circles and used electrical tape to secure the ends together before applying the putty. i then wrapped some heavy wire around the body of this and taped it for the support to mount this thing. for the putty i first rolled out a long strip to cover the circumfrence and then smoothed it down and then rounding over the top. i then pinched out a thin edge along the inner part of the circle and then pushed it up to get that thin wall look on the rim.

i did this laaaaate last night and was kind of experimenting so i didnt take as many pictures but once i go to make the edge on the other sides ill take more.

and for a sneak preview of one major distraction is this guy

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0732.jpg

this is why you should not let baby ogryns swim in nuclear contaminated water during a warp storm

Anyways please ask questions or give me some ideas/feedback if you want to. im really not much of a sculpter. ive done a few things on tanks and figurines but never made my own large model from scratch.

Update! though not much progress ;)

ive been working on a special project at work so a lot of my extra time has been going there plus i have a newborn so yeah things have slowed down a bit. also ive been stumped on the props. im going to make a toy store run and see if i can find something i can scavenge there. im also really up for ideas or links to a tutorial for making somthing similar.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0751.jpg

here ive finished the straps around the maggot like body holding the plates and the flared up armor plate ridges

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0750.jpg

here is the rotor housing, once i get the props installed and this mounted on the body ill finish the shaft and wiring to the body

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/IMG_0752.jpg

this is attempt 3 of making the props, tbh im not fully satisfied. im thinking of trying something different closer to the below sketch

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/hammered187/Untitled.png

either ill try to find somthing i can scavenge off a toy or another model similar to this or just make some small slats and over lap them to look more like a turbo fan

As for whats left after this is......

more wiring

the optics, which im thinking a pair or small eyeballs protruding out of the eye hole on their optic nerves and a search light inside the recessed area

some rivets on the straps

adding some super thin putty over some flocking or super fine sand to create corrosion effects around the model

making a base, i think im going to steal one of the ideas on the forgeworld site that has the nasty fluid coming out of the tail and spilling onto the ground
