deep in tau territory - a mod-log! (22/10: bolter-drones!)

This thread hurts me deeply. I mean come on, how could you?! How could you, you maniac, you lunatic, you blasphemer!? How could you waste a perfectly good ForgeWorld crisis suit leg on an Objective marker?

:P

Sorry, I couldn't help myself from poking a bit of fun at the nerd rage hornet's nest you seemed to have inadvertently thrown a rock at. The one thing they said that I think may be worth considering though: whether or not the Tau bits seem appropriately fit to the marines. The thing is, those of us who are intimately familiar with Space Marines and Tau can spot bitz bash, and it sticks out more in our perspective than to a clueless observer. So, find someone with a bit of artistic sense and no connection to 40k, explain how the models are composed of two different aesthetic styles, and see if he can point out bit for bit the difference. If he can get more than, I dunno, maybe half-ish, then you may need to smooth some rough edges.

Personally, I think it's an exceptional to average job, depending on the model. Only a couple of individual marines look 'wonky' to me (the one or two i spotted with crisis suit heads in particular) but I really like the medley of scrap you've used to whip up those bikes.

I do indeed hold a bit of a grudge over the scrapped FW crisis suit, by the way. I had a bunch of Crisis suits which i only recently unloaded in a pretty lopsided trade, and all I could think when i was working on them was "God, if only i had those FW models with the posable legs!" :P

(Must admit that at the very beginning I thought " oh, no another one!" :))

...well, i had only one bit of those FW posable leg models, so i couldn't do much about it really! :) But it looks ok as an objective markes. So they were FW posable crisis suit legs...uhm..nice to know! :cuss

The wonky crisis suit head techmarine. Hehe, wonky is ok IMHO. And there's only one :(

Thank you for the compliments!!

So, after a battle i have won (yuppi!!) against deathwing, a friend dropped buy and he gave a precious bit, which will be used as "servoarm" (=aka powerfist attacks) on the 3 techmarines...;)

Watch out for the very wuick update ;)

what about the Ordo Malleus, they don't just hunt Daemons they go after anything that is heretical including 'loyal' space marines that are deep behind enemy lines needing to use Xenos tech to live.

That would be Ordo Hereticus, or Xenos. not Mallaeus. Mallaeus would be rollin' in If they were posessed.

I quite like these Tau Space marines. Nice conversions, very clean.

cause inquisitors love to chill in tau space right? :)

but seriously dont let those fluff nerds rain on your parade, my marines fight alonside an eldar craftworld and my chapter master uses the sword of an avatar of khaine.

do what you think is cool, dont care what they say. :)

Update!

A small one, but finally my first techmarine is completed!

Here he is:

He's actually modular now, didn't decide yet whether to glue him in position or no...

C&C welcome!

Looks good, well done :D .

thanx ^_^

I like that tech marine, the only niggling thing I can see is he doesn't seem particularly connected to the drone, he looks just dropped on top of it, perhaps soe cabling would help? And I love the speeder and Telion, by the by.

..uhm...never thought of that...I'll what i can come up with, cabling... :D

thanx!

I agree with the drone thing, in fact I get that impression quite a bit; less that they've integrated Tau tech and more that they've glued Tau bits onto themselves. While I personally am not big on projects this incredibly out of sync with canon, I totally respect your choice to do so. Like Voltaire's biographer whose name escapes me said, "I disagree whole-heartedly with what you say but I will fight to the death for your right to say it." or words to that effect. Anyway, keep on keepin' on, but get yourself some guitar strings and integrate the Tau tech more <_<

...point taken on tautech integration...will work on it more! thanx GdM!

Something Something Dark Side??? never heard of it...will check asap...:P

EDIT: checked it out...yes, something like that... ;)

As suggested I used some guitar wire with the intent of integrating tha two halves a bit more. This is what I have atm:

I do like it. Thanx a bunch for the tips/ideas!

But..is it better now?

two sides of the same coin...

Firstly..

I personally hate the concept of alternate realities (Damn you Star Trek!) and I am a staunch follower of fluff and on that point I wouldn't touch this stuff with a 10 foot pole. It has been said but I whole heartedly agree that marines using Tau tech is absolutely not right.

BUT.. Its not my army, its not my hobby and I suppose I should share :P If you like what you've produced then fair play (I play pre-heresy and a lot of gamers hate that!) The hobby is all about creativity and I can't fault you on that.

Secondly (and more posatively)

I'm a kitbasher, I literally can't use greenstuff and from that perspective I salute you as there is nothing more satisfying than having unique minis. In line with your concept I believe most are perfect but i'd like you to think about suit intergration. The **** on the last page said your stuff looks like it's been through a blender. Don't listen they look great from a modeling perspective. I like the use of the odd component but the how would a tau battlesuit sensor unit (head) work with a suit of power armour. I'd suggest you rethink rplacing helmets with battle suit ones and maybe add tau targeting systems to damegaged marine ones ( from what I can see you're more than capable)

Finally, don't listen to guys like me we're old and set in our ways so as long as you're still buying GW kits I'll still have a shop to go and buy my cannonical ones ;)

Good luck with the army dude

thanx man B)

Concerning marine use of tautech...IIRC some particular marines chapters/companies/crusades went as far as using captured chaos stuff to continue fighting...and some others continued to fight barehanded, absolutely refusing to use any enemy's stuff...fortunately it's a very varied universe!

No problem with pre-heresy stuff...as long as they are all cool models though!

Instead I do like the alternate-reality concept a lot...it allows you do all those "what had happened if" armies/stuff which I found rather cool, it multiplies the modelling possibilities indefinitely...

The idea behind the bigheaded tautechmarine is that he doesn't have an helmet, but rather a bionic head...a bionic tau sensor array as head...same for he arms...they lost their limbs in action, and they only have tautech at hand, so all bionics/limb sostitution/repairs must be done using tau tech.

Well this is the explenation behind it. Concerning the models...I thought it looked nice on that chest, the one with the high chin guard...but the suggestion of using a marine helmet with a sensor array engraved in it might come in handy somewhere else...thanx!

A BIONIC HEAD?! ;)

so terrible as explanation?

Could we get a front picture with the cable. The above angle pics don't do it justice.

will do asap...:P

the idea of a bionic head is very interesting. Does this mean a bionic brain? Maybe we could call him the true Iron/Ceramite Man.

...that's the path I'm following...I'm a big fan of cyberpunk (and transhumanism, but a tad less) and cyberbrains are normal stuff there. I do prefer "clean" swaps rather than the macine/flesh mix of the adeptus mechanicus, so some DNA alteration, plastic materials rather than crude metal, vat-grown tissues/organs/limbs/connections, reshaped exterior appearence and even bodyshell change are nice, instead of lobotomy, crude bionic limbs and dirty&bloody inserts.

In some way Tau stuff has this exotic and futuristic look, it looks much more like advanced plastics than metals. They have the most advanced AIs of the universe (which didn't revolt yet) and so it fits my idea nicely.

-dammit, "fluff" discussion! ah!-

BTW...bitz arrived in the mail today, unfortunately some bitz were missing, but the guy told me he'd send them asap. So I have everything I need except 3 small bitz...the attack bikes and tac sgt will have to wait, but the MLmarine is done -quick headswap- and the techmarines can have finally their "servoarm" (=powersaw).

We're nearly there ladz, nearly done!

Cyberpunk! My arch foe...

I thought that guy had maybe had major structural damage to the cranium, and that head was acting as a 'brain in a jar' system until they could get back to supplies or something.

Yes, something like that, only that brain damage was major, so he had to be interfaced with an AI to assist him in many tasks. Fortunately he didn't loose his personality, but many normal functions, movement, breathing, senses...which are controlled by his AI half brain or something like that...

But your explanation could be better...more 40k-like...^_^ Uhm...
