New Guy with Some Questions:

Stomphoof

Recommended Posts

Hello folks! New player here, planning on joining the traior legions. I can almost hear the gasps. I am not new to miniature gaming (been playing Warmachine for about a year and a half) but I am new to 40k.

So I am planning on picking up the Chaos Space Marine codex this weekend, and POSSIBLY getting the Battleforce to go with it.

I had a few questions, specifically about the Battleforce:

1. I was planning on doing either Tzeenctch or Nurgle as a theme. Would the battleforce allow that?

2. I know the Battleforce comes with no HQ Option. What would be a good starter HQ?

3. About how many points (roughly, not exact) does the Battleforce come with?

Hopefully I can get some info here so I can make an informed choice about what to do here.

Oh and as a final note: I live in Orlando FL, and would like to find out if anyone from around there would be willing sometime to show me how to play the game. Reading the rules is one thing, playing quite another.

Thanks!

Welcome to the hobby! :HQ:

1.) In the battleforce you get;

15x Standard Chaos Marines

8x Khorne Bezerkers

5x Possessed

1 Rhino

With the exception of the Khorne bezerkers, everything in this box can be painted up to have the mark of Nurgle or Tzeentch. I wouldn't count out the bezerkers though, they are pretty beastly when teamed up with Khârn the Betrayer (who you WILL learn to love).

If you wanted to do a more specific thing, you might want to have a look at some Thousand Sons or Plague marines. All though, plague marines can easily be converted from the plastic chaos space marines. :) Also I've seen some pretty awesome Nurgle possessed :(.

2.) I suggest waiting till you have you codex and have a read through that, although the plastic chaos lord is probably the most versatile.

3.) I think it comes with around 500-600pts depending on how you build it. Sorry I don't have my codex handy...

I would also suggest not buying from GW as the prices are really high at the moment. Have a look at Wayland Games.

Good Luck!

.Torch.

I would say, get the codex first and decide what HQ you want. Then play a few small games with the battle force and the HQ (usually around 750pts).

After a few games you'll start to think 'my army could do with one of those/perform better with this.' And then your force will gradually build itself up over time. It'll be harder to grasp the rules if you start with a huge army, because it takes time to get used to every units special rules. :)

Our dreadnoughts are terrible rule wise. My advice is to pick up another battle force, i never buy single troop units due to price, 22.50 for 1 squad or 50 for a battleforce!.

Convert a chaos lord from the bits in the battleforce or i full recomend a demon prince. Im a traitor player and run nurgle. They are great! Dont let the internet tell you otherwise!

Is that 50 in pounds for the battleforce? Cause I am in the US :)

So get a battleforce and an HQ along with the codex and try small games...sounds like a good idea :)

If you start small you'll develop your own ideas and playing style and you'll know exactly what your next models will be without asking the friendly internet gamers :)

Don't forget to put up a WIP thread of your army :)

Personally I always buy from the store, I get it straight away so I can rip it open and get stuck in, if I have to wait for stuff my interest wnders...

I just made a demon prince from the possessed parts in the battleforce, in feb at my store there is a 'battle brothers' event wherapon you enter the army you can build from the battlebox you bought, but you can't add anything from outside the battleforce except minor decoration (nothing that can change the rules of the model) but for example you could get the sprue and build a defiler o.o

Anyhoo, depending on what you WANT the battleforce can be, I mean..you get 5 possessed...well thats enough possessed looking parts to build ten if you go halfsies with 5 of the csm's.

As for the berserkers, decide whether you want Berserkers or Thousand sons, because if you file down the Berserkers and give them bolters, voila!, Thousand sons.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck (and it was bought from the company that sells the ducks) then it doesn't matter if it was actually made from parts of a swan, a pig and a giraffe.

But I also recommend you buy a demon prince, they are extremely badass. If you made it nurgle for example, regular marines would have to wound it on sixes.

Hi, I'm a 40K Dad who has helped his son and about 10 other kids get started in 40K, and Torch's advice here is exactly what I have advised every new player; the battleforce will get you started, and after a few games, plus a good read of the codex, will help you decide where next, and this hobby is a bit too expensive to be buying models that 2 months later you find you didn't want.

What faction did you play in WM? Do you want to head in the same direction, or branch off in a different one?

Khorne is exciting but risky, Nurgle is safe if a little dull, Tzeentch is pretty but may limit your choices for development, Slaanesh is popular for Lash/Oblit lists.

Welcome to the B&C!

I play Khador right now.

I was starting to think I will just start as "Chaos Undivided" and then work from there.

I use several Sorcha models as Commander Sasha Eden, my Space Marine Captain, one on foot with Thunder hammer and oh-so-stylish Artificer Armour; the other, from the model twirling her hammer overhead, has been remodelled with a flaming sword and mounted on a (chaos) bike. Non-GW models, female marines...I do like to get into trouble! Hence my sig!

Whelp, I ordered from Wayland Games:

Chaos Marine Codex

Chaos Marine Battleforce

Chaos Marine Terminator Lord

I read the Codex a bit at my FLGS and decided on a Terminator Lord because I want him to get into peoples faces. Lead from the front and all that. Terminator armor is awesome for this.

I also intend to give him a pair of Lightning Claws, and maybe a mark of Khorne.

My army is going to be called "The Night Terrors" and are going to be themed around their Lord (the guy in Terminator Armor) as a pirate / marauder band who attacks in the dead of night to take what they want, kill what they want, and do as they please. Chaos Undivided will be the general worship, so that way I can have little mini groups in the larger whole.

Thinking dark blue (like night) with bronze trim for the scheme.

Not at all: I kill traitor scum whithout asking their name ;)

Usually, special characters its more to do with ther unique rules than the actual model. Just to give you an idea: Abbadon is 275 points IIRC, which is a bit more than a Land Raider! He is an army by himself!

But hey, I'm all for fluff and DIY chapters... even if fallen ;)

We are only fallen if you THINK we are. I prefer to think of us as Freethinkers! Free from the foolish rules of the Emperor!

Unfortunantly, chaos termies don't come with lightning claws :P

BUT, you can get some Space Marine Assault Termies and convert them to chaos with all the extra bits you probably have from your battle force (you'll be surprised how well you can kit bash Chaos and Imperial stuff).

Or, if you have lots of money saved you can get these from the GW site with some chaos terminators.

What have you built so far?
