Raptors 2nd Company

Well I have entered to LPC again and decided I should start on my vow, so here it is:

The green has only had a first coat on the Razorback so it looks a bit patchy. Scouts are getting undercoated as I speak.

Neat. I've been looking forward to seeing some Raptors about since I got a peek at the IA article. Interesting (and seemingly tricky) paint scheme and interesting background.

Now, where did that nasty little turret come from? Certainly doesn't look standard issue for a Razorback....

Quick edit: Speaking of the Razorback, I just noticed the front looks a bit janked up. Did it break off the dozerblades in a Gargant's toe, or does that little protrusion serve another purpose?

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Firepower: As Paladin said it is a FW tarantula, my friend found one but it didn't have the legs so i thought about sticking it in the hole on top of the Razorback. The protrusion is for a dozer blade but it snapped off. he bright side is that it just clips back into place so it means it is removable so thats good, here is some pics to show:

But the scouts have just had washes put on:

And here is the plan for weathering (base not finished):

How do you think it looks? I'm not too sure about the mud at the moment.

C&C appreciated.

If you are any good with GS (or very thin plasticard strip for that matter) how about running a strap on the sergeant's rifle? At the moment it is just hanging oddly in mid air on his back, a strap/sling would be a nice final touch - nice idea with a slung rifle, just needs finishing off.

@Paladin: That's a very good idea, but I will do it after the LPC (I think it will take a while to get right).

Well after moving house I decided to get a move on with some painting:

Scouts, not much different just a little highlights

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3263.jpg

Razorback:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3268.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3272.jpg

And I think I will switch to Knarloc Greeen for highlighting because it is not as vibrant and I prefer duller colours:

Goblin Green:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3270.jpg

Knarloc Green:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3271.jpg

Non LPC, I made a count as Lysander who will be a spearhead for my anti-GK force:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3262.jpg

Any C&C is welcomed. I hope you have noticed the difference the lightbox I made (shoddily) has had.

Cheers,

Thanks Cirekon, but trying to intimidate one loyal to the Emperor isn't going to work :D And I do have a couple of tricks up my (power armoured) sleeve...

More progress will be done tomorrow.

Well the above statement sort of failed, but I have finished the scouts now, well almost:

Should I put the camo netting on all of them? And what do you guys think about putting it on normal marines to represent Lias Issodon's Stealth tactic?

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3318.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3320.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3322.jpg

The Razorback just needs mud and smoke weathering and then it's done:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3323.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3324.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3327.jpg

And here is my painting desk I built with my dad lately, based upon the old GW one:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3328.jpg

Sorry for the bucket loads of pics. So, to camo or not to camo? That is the question :)

Cheers,

Sorry for the double post, but, I have completed my vow!!

I, Vulkan454 of the Raptors, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least 5 Scouts and 1 Razorback on or before the 31st of March, 2011. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

Here is the finished Razorback:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3334.jpg

And the finished vow:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3342.jpg

Any C&C is welcome. I think I will continue this as a blog as well.

Thanks very much Cirekon but I still have a lot to improve on. Speaking of the ramp being down, I will eventually paint the inside but for now it is done. I am also very proud oftbe weathering.

Next in the pipeline we have Lysander count-as, a dread and when my PA GK arrive, some converted Sternguard.

Any other comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thats a great looking Razorback (used the same turret on one of mine) keep it up!

Thanks I really like the turrets as well because they look more heavily armoured than the standard ones.

I am expanding this into a WIP so here is some progress:

My Lysander count-as has got some washes on him and the helmet has finished (my first time layering):

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3346.jpg

And some WIPs:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3351.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3353.jpg

I am awaiting my Orkhide Shade because I am going to start layering as well as highlighting. I would have had a combat squad and the new PAGKs but the postie couldn't fit the package through the mailbox so he sent it to the local post office which I am having to collect tomorrow, luckily it opens at 5:30 Am :P

Any C&C is welcome,

Good work on getting painted models down on the table. If I may, I would just like to offer some constructive criticism on how you could improve.

Your paint looks a little blotchy in places such as areas of the Razorback hull, Scout skin areas and some metallic areas. Either the base colour is too dark (or the paint too thin) for the coat you have applied. Simply adding a watered down coat of the same colour in the affected areas would solve this in almost every case.

Metallic areas could really benefit from a heavy wash of Badab Black to tone them down a little, as currently they look a little too bright. You could then use another metal colour (Boltgun Metal again if you like your metals dark, or Chainmail/Mithril for brighter ones) which could be applied on the tips or edges, leaving the recesses darker. This would add a lot of definition, bring out the detail and make it look a little neater.

For lenses such as the scopes on the Scouts and the Razorback cupola windows, adding a small white dot in the corner would help make these look a little more like lenses.

Please don't take the criticism to heart, you've done a good job for sure, these are just suggestions. I especially like the Camo effect on your cloaks by the way, it's excellent. I'm struggling to nail down a decent camo pattern on my own Sons of Orar Scouts at the moment and I"m getting a little frustrated. It's nice to see a really good camo effect for once!

You seem to have given one of the 3 marines in that pic a lasgun ammo clip on his belt.

Also the right track(from driver's POV) on the rhino isn't glued on properly. It's kinda pointing up when it should be like the one on the left.

Wow I feel privileged to get such great advice from an amazing painter such as yourself.

I do agree with you on the scouts skin. I tried to water down my paints but I stupidly added water to the pot and now it is too weak I think. The patchiness on the green will hopefully be solved after I use orkhide shade as a base. For the metal I took it from two different pots so some maybe better quality I'll just have to figure out which.

The metal is chainmail washed with Badab black and highlighted mithril silver. I have probably been to heavy handed with the mithril though. I will take your advice on using boltgun metal instead and that will fit the stealth theme nicely as well.

Yep the lenses are a bit c#%p so I will take a lot at how to paint marines for a guide on painting them. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I don't mind a bit of criticism, but I like it when the poster gives you tips to improve as well as you have done here. I really like the camp as well and so I shall check your blog on how you do it. Thanks for all the great advice though.

Yeh I have given him a lasgun ammo thing but I'm just saying is doubles as a water purifying thing or something like that. I used the belt because I really like the sheath knife and the canteen.

It was my first vehicle and I put the tracks on back to front so it all screwed up :ermm:

I guess I should read instructions more carefully in future.

Thanks to both you guys for the comments and I should have an update tomorrow.

I use a pretty simple technique for lenses and screens and whatnot. I described it step-by-step with pictures here. Maybe you'll find it useful.

If you've got time, maybe you could do a step-by-step on how you achieved the camo pattern on your Scouts. I think a lot of people (me included) would be interested to see how you did it.

That a great guide and a lot more detailed than the GW ones so cheers :tu:

I'll try and get a step by step up soon but it will probably have to be done on a captains cloak or something because I don't have any scouts left.

I picked up my order today and sprinted home:

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3356.jpg

The GK kits are amazing and highly detailed. I have started on my Sternguard sergeant (blu-tack):

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3361.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3360.jpg

I will probably not make anymore vets for a bit because I am going to get some FW armour variants and mix them in, as well as some of the Phobos patter bolters, when I save enough of my allowance.

I also had fun converting a librarian as well (blu-tacked again):

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3358.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Raptors%202nd%20Company/IMG_3359.jpg

I'm not sure about the head at the moment though. What do you think?

Cheers,

Vulkan
