Raptors 2nd Company

I think the position of the staff looks a bit unnatural. Maybe angle the arm downward a little, so the bottom of it rests on the ground? Or have the arm down completely maybe (so the staff is flat)? Choice of head is okay, tbh.

Is this pose better?:

I also started on a sergeant but my Orkhide shade was glossy so the pics bad and he is extremely WIP anyway:

I don't know if it's just me, but his arms and weapons seem a bit out of proportion

Really I thought it was fine. I'll bring him down and show you IRL when I come.

Here is an update because I have been fiddling about with lenses and I really like how I've done them personally:

Sorry for the long post:

Well here is the long awaited report, I didn’t manage to make a report against my mates Gk but I played my other friends Tau on Sunday so here it is (1400pts). It’s my own 4’x4’ board but it’s unfinished (needs grass and sealing):

Raptors army:

Captain Dalanos (Lysander)

Tactical Squad Fawkes (Meltagun, Razorback [Dozerblade] missile launcher)

Tactical Squad Reyen (ML, flamer, Rhino [salamander vehicle that has sponsons])

Scout Squad Audon (Telion, HB)

Sternguard Squad Lokkar (Power Weapon) [Grey bodiless guys]

Dreadnought Tyron

Land Raider ‘Corax’s Talon’ (Storm Bolter, Hunter killer)

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/059.jpg

From what I remember he is what he had:

Commander (Airburst thingy, Missile pods, 2 drones)

2x Fire Warrior squads (12 in each?)

21 Kroot (Shaper)

2 Crisis suits (Plasma rifle, 2 drones?, missile pods)

Stealth suits (1 drone, 2 burst cannons, 1 fusion blaster)

Hammerhead

Broadside (TL-Railgun, Missile pods)

Piranha (Fusion blaster)

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/060.jpg

Sadly I don’t have pics of deployment. And sorry about some of the pics bad quality (probably taken by me).

Raptors Turn 1

The Techmarine drivers fired up their engines and zoomed towards the Tau force.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/003.jpg

The mighty Land Raider ‘Corax’s Talon’ fired it weapons at a small unit of gun drones and the mighty machine downed three of the four drones. Their will broke and they started to flee towards the table edge. Brother Tyron, encased it dreadnought stomped forward an extra step (ran 1”). The Rhino on the left flank fired its storm bolter at the Tau sniper team and killed one drone. The new recruits (scouts) guarding the Raptors objective aimed at the Fire Warriors but their shots fell short. Half of Squad Fawkes shot at the Crisis battle suits with their missile launcher but the rocket was caught by the wind and scattered harmlessly into the ground.

Tau Turn 1

The lone gun drone continued to flee to safety. The Tau Piranha soared west towards the Razorback.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/008.jpg

The sound of jet packs was heard as the Crisis battlesuits jumped nearer to the Land Raider. Both of the Fire Warrior squads moved forward with the Ethereal in the second squad. The Tau commander, Gavner’Elan targeted the Dreadnought with his weapons and managed to immobilise the downed warrior. The Hammerhead rotated its might railgun towards the ‘Corax’s Talon’ but the beam just scratched the paintwork off the indomitable machine. But the Broadside suit braced its self and its railgun wrecked the Land Raider. Out spilled a disgruntled Captain Dalanos and Veteran Squad Lokkar. Following suit the Piranha also wrecked the Razorback. (Brown stuff is wreckage)

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/013.jpg

The sniper team downed one of the hastily evacuated brothers out of the wreckage of the Razorback. The fire warriors managed to lose 3 shots at the combat squad but the power armour saved them all. The Kroot chirruped to each other and fired at the veteran squad killing two of the mighty warriors including the Sergeant. In the assault phase the Crisis suits moved backwards. http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/015.jpg

Raptors Turn 2

The first half of squad Fawkes picked itself out of the wreckage of their transport but one brother tripped and impaled himself on a sharp piece of metal. The Rhino smashed into the river but the water just sizzled on the engine and it continued unharmed (passed difficult terrain test). The Sternguard also clambered over the dangerous terrain but two were consumed in pools burning oil. Squad Fawkes took their revenge and Brother Tannis destroyed the Piranha in a ball of gas that left the Raptors unscathed but consumed a Fire Warrior.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/028.jpg

The scouts fire at the sniper team and kill 1 drone. The team lose their nerve and start to run. Dreadnought Tyron tries to kill the commander but his system is still confused so he missed. The combat squad guarding the Raptors objective killed three Fire Warriors with their missile launcher. Dalanos’ Veterans killed three Kroot thanks to the captains Bolter Drill.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/023.jpg

Tau Turn 2

The last gun drone flees off the table. The Tau fleet was engaged in space so the Stealth suits didn’t turn up. The Kroot stalk towards the Sternguard and so do the Crisis suits. The Fire Warriors again advance towards the ruin. The Broadside waddles forward a measly 4” and fires a shot on the move and hits Brother Tyron’s fuel tanks and he exploded in a ball of fire.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/026.jpg

The Tau Commander’s Airburst cannon scattered onto 1 of the Kroot and killed him, but his missile pods and the cannon killed 2 Veterans and took a wound from the mighty Dalanos. The Sternguard saved all wounds from the Crisis suits. The Fire Warriors managed to kill off 1 Marine from Combat squad Fawkes. With a mighty roar the Kroot carnivores assault Squad Lokkar. The Crisis suits jump west over the Kroot and the commander moves south towards the river. The Veterans quickly fell 2 Kroot with their trained blades. The Kroot strike back with 28 attacks but I save all that wounded. Dalanos crushed the skull of another and the yellow-bellied Kroot flee. http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/032.jpg

Raptors Turn 3

The 2 surviving members of the combat squad take shelter in the temple ruin. The Rhino’s smokescreen came into play this turn and the Tactical squad stay embarked. The combat squad holding my objective blow up 5 Kroot with a well-placed missile. The scout snipers fail to kill any Fire Warriors. The Veterans kill a Crisis gun drone. Dalanos assaults the Crisis suits and he and his squad smash one to a bloody pulp. No wounds were taken in return. The Crisis suit passes his leadership test after a stern gaze from the Ethereal.

Tau Turn 3

The Kroot shaper brings them back into line (rally), but the sniper controller continues to run. The stealth suits turn up next to my objective.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/038.jpg

Both Fire Warrior squads combine their fire and kill of the two marines sheltering in the ruin. The Hammerhead and Broadside manage to stun the Rhino through the smoke. Shas’o Gavner’Elan (Tau commander) shoots the second combat squad but none die. However the Stealth team mange to kill off two brothers from that combat squad. The Kroot assault the Veterans again and bite through the eye socket of his terminator armour (causes a wound). The Veterans kill another Kroot but Dalanos fluffs his attacks. Combat drawn.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/041.jpg

Raptors Turn 4

Tactical Squad Reyen disembarks and sprint into the ruin. Their flamer goes through the first Fire Warrior squad and hits and kills two of the second squad while burning one in the first. Three more Tau die to righteous bolter fire. Scout squad Audon manage to kill two Fire Warriors as well.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/049.jpg

In the swirling combat, Dalanos saves all his wounds and his Veterans kill one more Kroot. The mighty Captain rolled all ones to wound though. The Kroot nerves break down (again) and they flee six inches but the Crisis suit holds firm.

Tau Turn 4

The sniper drone controller abandons the war field and the Kroot continue to run away. The Broadside battlesuit shook the ground as it advanced up next to the Hammerhead. The remaining Stealth suit let rip with his burst cannon but all the shots spattered off the Marines power armour. Both Fire Warrior squads shot the newly disembarked Tactical squad and 12 wounds were caused with 4 brothers falling. The Hammerhead managed to miss at point blank range with a rail gun but the Broadside reaped 2 kills. The last remaining Marines held (passed Ld). In combat the two remaining Sternguard couldn’t penetrate the Crisis suits armour. Dalanos beat away the suit’s attacks with his Storm Shield and left little but a smoking helmet after the ancient thunder hammer had its fun. They consolidated towards the Tau commander.

Raptors Turn 5

Dalanos sprinted towards the Shas’o and prepared to charge. The remains of tactical squad Reyen jump out of the ruin and flame both Fire Warrior squads and manage to kill one from squad 2. The Veterans cause 1 wound on the commander with their bolt pistols. The heroic Tactical squad then multi assault both Tau units.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/051.jpg

The Veterans cut down the drones with their combat blades and a well placed head but and Captain Dalanos vanquishes the Xenos commander.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/052.jpg

The Tactical squad fluff all their attacks and even lose one battle-brother, but their insane heroism anchors them in combat.

Tau Turn 5

The Broadside and Hammerhead move west and the Kroot abandon the field.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/053.jpg

The Stealth suit’s shots are saved again. They then take shots from the Hammerhead and the Broadside but the cover saves them. Squad Reyen are wiped off the surface of the planet but take one Tau with them with an underhand power armoured boot to the groin. The victorious Tau consolidate onto the objective.

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/056.jpg

Raptors: 1 Objective http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/057.jpg

Tau: 1 Objective http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv36/SpiritDragonalliance/Battle%20Reports/058.jpg

Draw

Aftermath:

I thought this was a very close game, in hindsight I should have remembered to pop smoke with the tanks of the first turn and kept the second tactical squad inside the ruin instead of assaulting. I completely forgot the scouts had Telion in them as well, which would have been very useful. Overall it was a very fun game and really enjoyable making a battle report to share with you guys.

The men/Tau of the match were Dalanos and that blasted Broadside

And here is you fluff Shaso' Gavner'Elan (from Warseer and a friend of mine) wrote up for the battle. I have kept it as Talius instead of switching to Dalanos because it sounds better and it develops the grudge between mine and his characters.

The thunderhawk cruised through the deepest royal purple night skies of Jokob'Ya with a grace that belied the urgency and importance of its task. Upon its dark hull was emblazoned the markings of the Raptor Chapter: and the insignia of Captain Talius. The sky above was alight with beautiful, staring, uncaring stars; the forest below stretched into the blackness of night...

++This is Hawk 96. Our cargo's status is green. The skies are clear. The xenos are elsewhere...++

The dull, dangerous red glow of the cockpit, Maranius Tasilian reported back to his Raptor masters. With a nervous gulp, he glanced out into the distance. Resounding flashes, muffled explosions silhouetted the distant alien mountains, and the towns and cities of the verdant Tau Colony. War had come to this beautiful planet. A crusade of vengeance. A glorious fight in the Emperor's name.

Tasilian felt no joy as he guided the growling thunderhawk and its precious cargo across the quiet skyscape, however. Responsibility clawed at his every move. Should he fail, his mistake would cripple Captain Talius' Raptors. Should the Raptors fail, their mistake would cripple the Imperium's influence in the Eastern Fringe...

++ETA two hours. Hawk 96 out.++

He disconnected, flicking a switch and leaning back. The sweat trickling down his forehead began to ease as he started to calm...

A light began to flash in front of him. Tasilian glared at the dashboard. For a moment, he thought he had tapped the wrong switch. Then a siren began to wail. Maranius Tasilian's eyes widened in horror as a wash of blue fire swallowed up the viewing bay.

The screams of Hawk 96's crew were drowned out almost immediately as the Railgun blast tore the aircraft apart. Blue light ripped into a blooming orange explosion. Thundering earthwards on hellish wings, the thunderhawk's wreckage, its dead crew, and its priceless cargo hurtled to flatten a small riverside village and the outpost beside it, killing its unsuspecting gue'la inhabitants as they slept. Smoke and fire pulsed into the sky. Soft starlight no longer illuminated the sight of the ambush. As two opposing strike forces were scrambled to reclaim the prize at its centre, the soon-to-be battlefield was lit up by red flame.

Shas'o Gavner'Elan felt pride as he watched his small, hastily mustered Cadre form positions in the ruins. In the burnt-out buildings' midst was a crucial Tau transmission tower. He had called himself and his men from the front line battles against the scattered but highly elite Raptors to secure this beacon...

He had not expected to find such fierce opposition lining up on the other side of the river: among them, the Imperial commander Talius himself, resplendent in intimidating Terminator armour.

“Fire Warriors, kroot auxiliaries, Shaper, glorious Aun'el...” He proclaimed to his assembled forces, a softly humming Hammerhead and his two reliable bodyguard drones drifting imposingly behind him, “There is more to this battle than was first thought. It is clear that our enemy is here to secure something of their own from the wreckage of their downed aircraft. Why else would Captain Talius himself be present, with a mechanised force that is certainly here to fight to the death?” He stood as tall as he could, allowed his weapons to charge, glow, hum. “They have come to destroy us. Shall we let them? Or shall we deal a blow of our own?”

As the Raptor vehicles roared to life across the river, the Tau dived into action with a roar of Jokob'Yan determination.

Captain Talius felt the Land Raider roar and rumble as it thundered across the battlefield, flanked by other tanks that glowed maliciously in the firelight.

++Captain! We have opened fire! The Jokob'Yans' heretical drone technology is no match for the wrath of our guns.++ Talius smiled grimly, watching on a flickering screen as the Tau's front line of drones vanished in flashes of fiery death, the lone survivor calculating its low survival chances and turning tail, to the shock of the Fire Warriors hunkered down behind.

“Veteran Squad Lokkar! We spill Xeno blood today: blood that will repay the unjust attack on the Vigil System only when it is steaming in the dirt! Prepare yourself for justice! Prepare yourself for vengeance! Prepare yourself for wa-”

The Land Raider's interior dissolved into blinding chaos as fuel tanks ruptured, ammo bunkers ignited and previously thundering weapon sponsors were tossed into oblivion. Talius was thrown to the ground with his elite squad, blood-red symbols flashing warnings across his vision.

Rising back up from the Land Raider's suddenly devastated corpse, Talius felt cold fury rising in his two hearts. The survivors of his veteran squad rose up beside him. Together, they marched from the Land Raider's burning husk and onwards towards the xenos.

“Nice move, Gavner'Elan.” The Captain growled. “But you have done nothing but anger the Raptor. You have merely shaken the cage...”

Shas'o Gavner'Elan leapt through the woods in which the kroot forces were firing into the enemy lines with feral roars, his jet pack hurtling him through the canopy and out onto the other side. His armour lit up as the kroot rifles below spat out chaotic blue-red blasts.

His firing line was tearing the first Raptor forces apart satisfactorily, the Land Raider blown to pieces, the distant Razorback following a similar fate under the screaming fusion guns of the darting Piranha. Sniper Drones barked as they attempted to out-snipe the Space Marines defending the ruins across the river.

Running across the blackened ground beyond the kroot's woods, the Jokob'Yan commander powered up his weapons for another barrage as the recently wounded Dreadnought on the high ground suddenly noticed him and spat flaming gouts of pure destruction at him. But he bore the brunt of the attack, and returned fire fiercely.

Suddenly, the Dreadnought was gone in a fist of devastation that lunged heavenwards.

--Good job, comrades. The misguided enemy are finally learning that we will not fall as easily as their arrogance would suggest to them. Stand firm, for the Tau'va!--

The Tau commander continued on his way, the enemy positions across the river in his sight... But suddenly, from the ruins of the Land Raider, a terrifying figure strode like a ghost of war.

--Kroot: charge!--

Captain Talius hoisted his softly crackling hammer and gritted his teeth in barely contained energy as the alien monsters charged in a feral wave from the trees and leapt into assault with his momentarily shocked veteran squad. His ferociously muscled body tensed and he gave a shout as he swung his devastating weapon at the enemy.

His swift opponents barely escaped the blast of force that tore the earth beneath his hammer into a jet of scorched mud as his men were embroiled in chaotic combat. With a cry of rage, Talius swung his mighty weapon once again, and declared to his battle-brothers: “Remember Vigil! Remember your brothers, slain by these beasts' alien weapons!”

His brothers remembered: and, with a team of dark green battlesuits descending to join the combat, the surviving veterans spilt kroot blood upon the dark ground.

Aun'el Lio'ca wept a single tear as he watched Captain Talius and his two remaining guards carve their way through the kroot, before the alien auxiliaries' resolve completely shattered and, their shaper bellowing at them with guttural snarls, they abandoned the fight. The two brave crisis suits battled on, gaining their commander time to find a prime position to strike the custodians of the mysterious cargo of the downed thunderhawk.

The Ethereal, standing in the centre of the Tau firing line, watched the exhausted, mud-splattered Fire Warriors battle on, raking the ruins above the beacon, now occupied by the remnants of the mechanised Space Marines, with brutal pulsefire, the shrieking blades of Railgun-fire from the Hammerhead and Broadside tearing through the skies above. Noticing that the soldiers were tiring in the face of the Space Marines' unmatched determination and stubbornness, he stood tall and defied the fiery bolts hammering the ground and Fire Warriors around him.

“My comrades, the fight is brutal, but victory is in sight! Their arrogance is strong, but the Space Marines' resolve is waning: watch as they wither behind the ruins.” His voice alone bolstered the firing line's morale, and a Space Marine kneeling on the steps above the besieged beacon roared in agony as he and his brothers were picked off by the flood of blue rounds hammering the wrecked outpost they had captured. “Will you let them steal our beacon, learn our secrets, plot to kill our family and friends and lovers and children? No! For you are Fire Warriors, and your cleansing touch burns all trace of the Mon'tau from our great empire! Drive them back!”

His words had the desired effect: but as his men's courage strengthened, the Aun'el's wavered...

Shas'o Gavner'Elan, across the battlefield, had misjudged his personal plan to attack the enemy from behind: and he was now exposed, alone, and, despite the brave sacrifice of the crisis squad, was about to be assaulted by a man whose mastery of fighting could mean only doom for the Tau commander...

Shas'o Gavner'Elan roared in rage and pain as Talius' hammer ripped open his armour and sent flashing warnings screaming across his HUD. Infuriated that he could have brought himself into such a situation, he activated his damaged jetpack and burst from the combat to soar out of danger.

But as he regarded the battlefield below, his anger subsided: his personal loss had not affected the victory of their mission. His Fire Warriors had succeeded in fending off the Space Marines' attempts to seize the beacon, wrecking their mechanised power, and leaving the Imperial commander isolated with his ragged veteran squad in the Shas'o's former position.

Across the river, the Space Marines, harried by the lone Stealth Suit they couldn't pin down, recovered their unidentified cargo and began falling back, seeing that their comrades across the river had not taken the alien data, and that a complete victory would not be theirs. But they were grudgingly satisfied: they had efficiently defended the thunderhawk's contents and disappeared on foot into the woods to await an evac.

Descending to earth as the battle came a close, and the two forces retreated, Shas'o Gavner'Elan smiled sadly, grimacing at the pain pulsing through his body. A great victory for neither side – and sacrifices aplenty for both.

--This is Shas'o Gavner'Elan. We have succeeded: the Tau'va has been preserved, and preserved well. Pull back: this battle is over.--

***

Captain Talius watched the Tau commander whoosh away into the night, his hammer cooling in his grasp as the bloodshed drew to a close.

Hacking into the Shas'o's transmission, he heard the commander's command to fall back.

“This battle is not over, Gavner'Elan.” He turned to the horizon, where distant explosions bloomed skywards. “You know that as well as I.”

Thanks very much guys.

Cirekon: Thanks, the flamer is one of my favourite parts of the squad and it was my first try at it so I'm pretty happy.

Bannon: Haha thanks, I used the webbing to represent Lias Issodon's stealth rule for when I get IA9. The grey is codex grey in the recesses and then you layer fortress grey on top of that.

That's all folks! I want to get my termie finished by the end of the week for when I go down to Cheshire to fight the infamous Grey Knights ;)

If you're making terrain buildings out of foamboard, you shouldn't have to use foam/polystyrene underneath for strength. It should be able to stand on it's own once all the sides are together. This building was made just out of foamboard and 1mm thick card. :D

N.B. I'm not hijacking your thread, just thought you could use the foam for other things instead of wasting it under the foamboard.

Wow thats a great piece, any chance you could give me a link to some more of your stuff?

I suppose I just wanted to give it some more strength, but your right, it should just hold up by itself. Thanks for the pointer :P

I haven't actually built anything that big in a while Vulkan, just had that picture on my computer to show you about not using foam underneath your structure. That building is 23"x12"x16". A lot of structure that won't be crumbling anytime soon. I've made lots of terrain over the years but no other pictures, so sorry no links for you. The piece of terrain before that was the greenish manufactorum building from the Cities of Death book about 4 years ago.

Happy glueing!

Well I picked up my first Finecast set recently and I was quite impressed with the detail. And I also magnetised the backpack and it was my first time so I thought I did quite well:

Got some Mentors shoulder pads to finish of my Sternguard, so this is the first finished member:

And the start of a converted Razorback:

I've started to use power fists as well:

And a Salamanders tribute model that reminds me of my time playing them:

And two extra Sternguard:

Thanks,

good to se the hand i gave you going to good use, nice shoulders as well, by the way with the finecast, are you struggling to undercoat the model?, with my draigo, black paint straight from the pod is just kind of shrinking on the model, like what would happen if it were really watered down

also nice tribute model, it looks really good i'm gonna miss them

Thanks, about the finecast, try washing it because it may have release agent on it (from the moulding process) and that's what happens with Forge World models. but don't make the water to warm because it will start to distort the model.I'm going to use spray myself.

I'll come back to my Sallies eventually,

thanks for the reply

Good gravy, how did I miss this update?!

And man ... I should have looked into the Mentors tilt plate ... DANG. I'd pay the price to not use transfers. Oh well.

Regardless, good show, keep it up! :wallbash:

Thanks very much mate :)

I've always hated using transfers as well so I freehand most of my stuff but I liked using them for my Sternguard.

I just noticed that it takes absolute ages to load all the pictures as well,

How are your Raptors coming along?
