Horus Heresy timeline

Hails to all!

From time to time I head that Great Crusade lasted about 200 years. Is it correct? More than that, Horus Heresy novels are describing time from Ullanor (where Sons of Horus got their new name) to Isvaan 3 as few decades. But according to timeline we can see in Codexes and Index Astartes - it was almost 900 years! You can see timeline I am talking about on lexicanum, and find official proofs in C:SM. Night Lords timeline shows similar story, it was about 2000 years from visiting Nostromo to Horus Heresy.

So, my question is: maybe I got something wrong? Maybe Horus Heresy novels are not showing exact timeline but rough abstraction? Maybe anybody can remember how old were Garro and Iacton Qruze?...

It was a hard job I assume. Thank you! But Hell, why does GW keeps writing 125.M30 as renaming from Luna Wolves to Sons of Horus in every new Space Marines codex? And drop site massacre is about 013M31. That's the thing I can't understand - why can't they just choose one version and stick to it?

I like to think of Index Astartes as accurate as well as the C:SM.

To have conquered so many worlds the Legions must have been fighting for more than 200 years.

2000 seems about right to me.

The problem with us is we don't understand the non-linear 8 dimensinal time GW uses for its timelines.

 Sometimes I think that not everyone in GW understands it too.

As for me - they are establishing those timelines right now, writing Horus Heresy. It's main fluff engine. But Codexes are written by gaming guys, who are using simple copy-paste from older codexes, maybe going back down to Rugue Trader. That's why I prefer HH timeline as quoted by isilvra.

About conquering galaxy in 200 years... I don't know, keeping in mind more than 3000 of fleets and about 250 000 of Ultramarines only (took this number from topic next door), while 10 000 marines is more than enough to make any world compliant... 200 years believeable. Solar Macharius had only 1 fleet, still he did alot. Of course main reasoning is that 2000 years does not really fit into already established fluff, that's why I noticed it in the first place.

PS: maybe somebody from GW is reading this and can enlighten us which version to choose as "closer to true"?... But that's too good to be true.

I don't know if Black Library have an established time line in place or whether they just leave it up to the authors.

From some posts (or interviews?) of Mr. Aaron Dembski-Bowden it's clear that in Black Library they at least have "council" or something, where group of authors can discuss questions like this. You can find mentions in topic about visibility of Eye of Terror. I doubt something similar exists for background section in Codexes.

So its quite possible this is the reason why HH books have greatly inflated the number of marines in the legions then.
