+Tutorial+ Painting Power Weapons

Here is a power weapons tutorial I made for my log at the BAs subforum:

If anyone has any questions, just let me know. ;)

1. I basecoated the blades with Regal blue and washed them with Badab black

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/4135/16634943.jpg

2. Once dry, I made a lightning pattern with pure Regal Blue.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6950/70996182.jpg

3. I continued with a 1:1 mix of Regal Blue + Ultramarines Blue.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3952/50896672.jpg

4. Then Pure Ultramarines Blue.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/5743/90131625.jpg

5. Then a 1:1 mix of Ultramarines Blue + Ice Blue.

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/579/83163162.jpg

6. Then Pure Ice Blue concentrating on the edges.

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9113/93196832.jpg

7. Then Pure Skull White again concentrating on the edges of the blade and the pattern.

At this point the blade already looks great and you can stop here. I added however another step:

8. Glaze the whole blade with a 3:1 Diluted Skull white, which blends the colors and gives a haze effect on the blade.

The final result is this:

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm glad that you find the tutorial useful. :)

I was fooling around with another sarge the other day and tried that effect on his fist

giving the impression of powering up and getting ready to strike.

This is the result:

Wow. And I thought just the Lightning Claws were great.

That is some seriously impressive stuff man. You got skillz (with a "z"). :D

I am so gonna try that if I ever get around to starting my Exorcists.

I used this technique to paint a power axe and am very pleased with the result (can't post a picture as my camera's away being repaired). I now want to achieve a similar effect on a force weapon but don't want it to be blue so I was going to go for purple; trouble is that while testing it on bits of sprue, I'm having difficulties getting the colours right - it just doesn't seem to work. My initial attempts were warlock purple -> liche purple -> skull white. I've also tried throwing in bleached bone before the skull white as well as mixing the liche purple with skull white to create an intermediate layer of pink but I'm still failing to get that nice hazy effect.

Does anybody have any idea which colours would work well to create a purple version of this?

Thanks guys! :tu:

@ After_8

For a similar purple effect I would do:

1. Basecoat the blade with Warlock Purple and wash it with Badab black

2. Once dry, I'd do a lightning pattern with pure Warlock Purple.

3. Continue with a 1:1 mix of Warlock Purple + Tanned Flesh.

4. Pure Tanned Flesh.

5. Then a 1:1 mix of Tanned Flesh + Tentacle Pink.

6. Pure Tentacle Pink concentrating on the edges.

7. Pure Skull White again concentrating on the edges of the blade and the pattern.

8. For the haze effect you need only to dilute Skull white with water in a ration 3 or 4 parts water : 1 part White and liberally apply it on the blade.

Here is a similar effect on a larger blade:

@Terminatorinhell

My colors of choice for a red blade would be:

1. Basecoat the blade with 1:1 Mechrite red and Chaos black

2. I'd do a lightning pattern with pure Mechrite red

3. Continue with a 1:1 mix of Mechrite red + Blood red.

4. Pure Blood red.

5. Pure Fiery/Blazing Orange.

6. Sunburst Yellow concentrating on the edges.

7. Then Pure Skull White again concentrating on the very edges of the blade and the pattern.

8. For the haze effect the same recipe of 3 or 4 parts water : 1 part Skull White and liberally apply it on the blade.

At some point in the future I'll do a Red Blade on a librarian.

How soon will that be, will depend on the time I'll finish painting a commission job I'm working at the moment.

Stay tuned! ;)

I'm working on something right now for power weapons that I don't think has not been done yet. My first attempt was black undercoat, basecoat with mithril silver, heavy Asurman blue wash, and from there I'm going to add lightning like mentioned above --> ultramarines blue, ice blue and skull white. The same effect works well when you mix the Asurman blue with Baal red wash. And lastly another trick is to paint different swirles of the silver metals randomly on the blade, each one adds a different depth to the blue or purple, add in the lightning after and it's pretty cool. I'll add pictures when I finish

I just wanted to say I love this tutorial, I use it a lot, and recommend it to my friends, here's my results. I went back on a older model to test it on the blade.

I used you're guide too, to try my FIRST EVER blending/lightning effect. I'm a new painter. Just started this army its my first ever loving the hobby so far.

I started with black, did a thick squiggly of Macragge Blue, then a thinner line inside (leaving the Macragge showing) of

Aldorf Guard blue->Calgar blue-> Lothern Blue (this one was prominant as its very 'glowy')->Fenrisian Grey-> thin highlight of Ceramite White.

I then took the Fenrisian Grey and did the lightning bolt squigglies all over it, then highlighted those squigglies with Ceramite White again.

What do you guys think? I tried a blending effect on a small extra combat knife I tried to make it look like a power weapon and it had clear cut lines of shades of blue and looked horrible, is the trick smearing the lines together while still wet? I'm pretty new at this so while I think I understand the Lightning effect, the pure blending effect is still out of my grasp.

How do I do something like this

Blended Sword

Or the armor on these Termies is incredible

http://independent-painters.blogspot.com/2...01_archive.html

Anyone know any good guides or can direct me how I even start to attempt effects like these?

Well, here is my Termie, not bad for a new painter!

Thunder Hammer

I did not go all the way to the white glaze but used a gloss varnish instead then a very dry white drybrush on the edges.

Much appreciated that you shared.

For those of you in need of a red blade tutorial, follow the recipe shown above in post #14 or any other equivalent of your choice keeping in mind the following pattern:
