+Tutorial+ Painting Power Weapons

Hey guys, I am fairly new to the painting side of things. I am trying my best to develop my skills in every way possible and this guide looks like a great way to do weapons.

Im not sure what you mean in part 8 though, could you please elaborate.

8. Glaze the whole blade with a 3:1 Diluted Skull white, which blends the colors and gives a haze effect on the blade. What do you mean by the 3:1 diluted skull white. 3 parts water 1 part white? and then you just brush the edges with this solution? or the entire thing.

Please advise.

Yes, it's exactly that. Make a really thin white almost translucent and coat the whole blade with it, but wait for the paint to dry before glazing it. This stage is optional though. It's just for that little something after you finished painting. ;)

Great tutorial man! Got bored of basecoats and took a stab at doing a Termie Sgt sword up. It's actually decently similar to how I did most of my power weapons, except with a blue basecoat instead metal, more depth steps, and the glaze - I really like how it came out and think I'll go back and redo my old ones.

I'll be using this for my eventual Chapter Master's power fists (hopefully in the next day or so). When explained like that, it seems so simple happy.png

Here is a power weapons tutorial I made for my log at the BAs subforum:

If anyone has any questions, just let me know. smile.gif

1. I basecoated the blades with Regal blue and washed them with Badab black

2. Once dry, I made a lightning pattern with pure Regal Blue.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6950/70996182.jpg

3. I continued with a 1:1 mix of Regal Blue + Ultramarines Blue.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3952/50896672.jpg

4. Then Pure Ultramarines Blue.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/5743/90131625.jpg

5. Then a 1:1 mix of Ultramarines Blue + Ice Blue.

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/579/83163162.jpg

6. Then Pure Ice Blue concentrating on the edges.

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9113/93196832.jpg

7. Then Pure Skull White again concentrating on the edges of the blade and the pattern.

At this point the blade already looks great and you can stop here. I added however another step:

8. Glaze the whole blade with a 3:1 Diluted Skull white, which blends the colors and gives a haze effect on the blade.

The final result is this:

With the new GW colours in the stores and not the old ones, what would be the equivalent to the ones you mentioned above?

Regal Blue - Kantor Blue

Badab black - Nuln oil

Skull white - Whitescar

Ice blue - Lothern blue

Ultramarines blue - Altdorf guard blue

Here is GW's colour conversion chart. Quite handy happy.png

Also, I decided to post a few compilations of the power weapons that I have made so that you guys can have a better view of the final result.

Sorry for the thread Necromancy, but I found this thread whilst searching for ways to paint Power Swords without an airbrush, and just had to thank the OP.

It was my first attempt at power weapons, and I'm very pleased.

Thanks!

Aha. Nice metallic power weapon there.

Are the steps for painting power weapons with a metallic base more or less the same, or is it a different method? I've been searching for a tut to paint electrified metallic power weapons (much like how GW paint their power weapons as of late), but to no avail.

Yeap, the method is more or less the same. i start by completing the metallics first, then I continue with this recipe.

The only difference is that after the metallics, I start the effects with 2-3 layers of blue ink to create the transition, and then once dry I build onto that.
