10 men. Getting somewhere!

****************************************************************************************************

Hey everyone,

This is my WIP log for my Sons of Orar army. I figured it's about time I got it started and SoO are getting quite popular now. I've been trying out a hundred different ways to paint them (you might have seen two of them in their respective HoH threads) and I've finally hit on something I like, which is below. In fact, most people won't even read this, so go ahead, enjoy the pictures, and please, criticize.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4992/p1010691sd.jpg

So I hope you like it. He has shading on his armor, but thanks to my godawful photography, you can hardly see it. The 2nd and 3rd pics sort of show it though. Photography tips appreciated, I'm tired of my pretty well-painted models looking like crap when I photograph them...

And, if you're still with me, right now I have (unpainted):

-5 assault termies w/magnetized arms for LC's or TH/SS

-5 metal GK termies

-a bunch of tacticals all mixed up

-2 AOBR dreads

-1 Predator

-1 LRC/LRR (magnetized)

-5 sniper scouts

-random hq's

-4-5 horribly painted devastors from a trade

-other stuff I can't remember

Yeah, lots of random stuff. And thank you to eggroll and Ravendove, among others, for inspiration.

EDIT: replaced first pic with something fractionally better.

Just passing by in a rush, but I just wanted to say that the model looks good, I like the red. I'll add some more C&C later but I have to run to class now, so, yeah, bye!

Thanks Battle-Brother Ludovic.

So here's some updates, been scrubbing:

Enough guys for a combat squad, and I can scrape together a few other tacticals.

Here's those magnetized LC TH/SS Termies... in various stages of painting from long ago. You might recognize the middle one.

So I'll be working on these during this week (spring break) hopefully getting as much finished as possible. The Termies got dropped in simple green just now.

And that dread in the back... that is the one from the trade. No idea how I'm gonna get that centimeter thick paint off.

Thanks for your interest :D

edited 'cause I forgot the pics!

The terminator in the middle is so perfect - why paint it differently? :-D

Very clean painting, so far. But to my mind, your son of Orar needs some shadows and highlights. Perhaps you've already applied some, I can't see that from the pictures, though.

Since you've already painted the Ultra terminator I've been admiring for quite a while, I think I don't need to tell you about the basics of highlighting - maybe save for one thing. Don't think it's too much, even if it does seem to be to much to your eyes, remember that other people didn't see the miniature from the start.

So be brave and add stronger highlights :-)

Thanks Rogan and Ludovic. I might add some highlights, but they they always seem to go wrong on red... on blue, they're much easier. There are shadows though, they got washed out in the pics. Proof below :D

I made progress on the combat squad, the red is done. Decent pics. Maybe flash is the answer?

Hopefully you guys can see the shadows now.

So, it's been a hellish week at school and crew, and its only gonna get worse, but here's what I accomplished over spring break:

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/103/p1010700s.jpg

They are awaiting dullcote.

I also put a pic of them in the first post. 5 men painted in a uniform color scheme- a new record for me. And, i just got a 36" roll of GS in the mail today. :D Its gonna be a fun weekend, if i survive practice on Friday. Thanks for looking, please comment, its really motivating.

Very nice, I love looking at threads of wellpainted, lesser used chapters. your white is really smooth, always tricky. My only critique would be the wires at the top of the backpack, at the least some boltgun metal followed by a black wash. Looking forward to more.

Thanks Psy-Crow. I knew I should have finished those backpacks, I'll do that Friday.

loving the white. How do you plan on basing them?

Well, as a reward for painting these I'm letting myself convert up some ghillie suit snipers. They'll probably be in a forest/jungle camo, so based on that, I'll base the rest of the army.

Looking great verpine. And good luck with the school :tu:

Thanks Ludovic!

All righty, heres what I did last weekend:

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3950/p1010708s.jpg

And a lick of paint today. Did the sleeves and basecoated the ghillie suit with DA green.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8668/p1010709y.jpg

QUESTION: What color should I do the armor and shoulderpads? I'm thinking catachan green armor. Should I make the shoulderpads white? How should I tie them in with the rest of my army?

Also, I've been having fun with green stuff. I'm making a press mold for the shoulderpad symbols, so I sculpted the omega. I had leftover mixed GS, so i made a tactical arrow, and some other random stuff:

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1619/p1010710h.jpg

Haven't got around to finishing those tacticals' backpacks yet, though.

Thanks for looking. Comments appreciated.

Very ghillie! I like, although i'm a little unsure of the ammount of ghillie on the 1st Scout. What kinda colour scheme you going for? looks like Camo on the canvas type stuff, and a darker red on teh armour?

Well that's what I'm unsure about... Red armor would tie them in a bit with the rest of the army, but why wear red armor when you're trying to camoflouge? Thats why I was thinking catachan green for the armor (which I have to go buy). Unless anyone has any other ideas.

Perhaps a more muted, darker red like a nearly terracotta shade with crimson highlights would work without throwing off the aesthetic too much. That, or if you have the patience for fine detail work, maybe the standard red, with soot/dirt handprints here and there as if they smeared soil and muck to hide themselves better. Not sure really.

I agree (though it probably doesn't help now) that the first scout seems a bit overboard with the gillie, especially the pant legs. If it weren't for that I'd recommend a little scarf/drape over his chest made of gillie, akin to the mask on the crouching one (but slack and hanging over the breastplate, rather than around the mouth). Oh well, too late now.

I think a muted red woould work, like Firepower said, mainly because teh SoO aren't really known for their camoflague are they? I'm doing something similar with my ultras, regal blue instead of ultra blue. It looks pretty cool, and you can still tell they are ultras!

Edit: It maybe doesn't even have to be muted, just more natural than the bright red, maybe a slightly darker red and lightly stipple some green on it. Do some tests if you not sure.

Sounds a little redundant now, but wouldn't it be easier to paint those scouts if you added the Ghillie bits last..?

Yes. Yes it would.

Thanks for the suggestions. The legs look funny when he doesn't have his gun, when he's all together it brings the model together (see below).

I decided to paint the armor green, as I didn't want any "christmas tree" stuff going on and I figured it would go with the camo better. Take a look below.

looking good..:HQ:

Thanks!

I just loved this guy so much I painted him in record time (looks like a random dog hair got on his head in the pics...):

I added some more gauze to the other members of the squad also. They're coming along...

edit: and... I'm going to do some fancy forest basing on the squad, no worries.

I think the camo netting needs two other shades/tints of green to go with what you've done already. Or maybe some brown....

It'll help sell that you can only see this sniper scout because he's up and moving. It also keeps this unit from looking monotone.

Hey all,

I can't keep away from green stuff, sculpting is so fun and I can see my skills improving. This weekend (so far) I've been doing some repositioning and sculpting little doodads with the excess GS... here's a banner:

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/2614/p1010720l.jpg

It's not finished yet, though.

And here's what I've been spending a lot of time on. Both of these guys were converted using the standard "standing around" legs from the tac squad box. Mr. Beakie here started when I tried to seperate his chest from his torso. Turns out, plastic cement is really, really, strong. His leg broke off at the soft armor in the hip instead, giving me an idea... I simply drilled a hole, put in a paperclip, a dab of superglue, some GS, and here we are:

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/7490/p1010717s.jpg

In this pic, you can see where I repositioned the leg:

http://i56.tinypic.com/waklyv.jpg

And I call the next guy Captain Morgan... crushing xenos scum (eldar) under his boot. A slightly more ambitious project, but the idea was the same- strategic slicing of the leg, superglue, GS.

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/1227/p1010721n.jpg

And some stuff I sculpted on them:

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4961/p1010722ve.jpg

http://i54.tinypic.com/w8mclw.jpg

After these guys, I doubt I'll ever let myself assemble a standard marine again.

@epherous: You're absolutely right, and I went ahead and added lighter greens, darker greens, and other shades to the cloak. Pics sometime later.

Thanks for looking, comments welcome.

Hey all,

I decided to turn those converted marines into the first 2 members of a sternguard squad, and converted three more. Here we are:

Converted Tyrannic War vet:

The GS work isn't as bad as it looks... and everything looks better with paint. Soon...

And the two you've seen before:

Whoops, looks like his gun wasn't positioned...

And finally, snipers awaiting primer and paint... next weekend.

Thanks DarKHazz13, I agree his leg is a bit weird, repositioning SM legs is a real pain in the neck. It's probably too late to change that now... Hopefully it won't look awkward when he gets painted.
