Mordrak - (Other projects coming soon!)

Excellent job on the ghost knights. The blue glow definitely makes it pop, and I don't know if I'm the only one that noticed but I think the changed angle of his gun arm makes him look about twice as intimidating. If I could suggest something, have you considered using the glow effect on the eyes of the skulls? I feel it'd give it a nice otherworldly touch, like no matter which way a heretic runs, the grey ghosts are always watching them.

I like it, the glow deff made it more ghostly. As others were saying maybe just one more highlight of white on the letters to make them pop with the glow around them. Other suggestions, maybe make the barrels on the Bolter glow as well? and I feel it needs a spot color or something, its all very blue right now, which is ghostly and all, but makes it kind of hard to focus on any details, since the are all the same color. Oh and once you base him make sure to have the glow on the base around his feet :)

It's getting there but still looks a bit too statue-like IMHO. I would make the lettering/center of eyes a bright, near white. It will really help the OSL effect. And I would make the sword very OSL glowy.

Ok...this is attempt number 3 on a scheme for the ghosts.

I took a good look at the last two and had to agree, it didnt convey 'ghost'. It looked like a statue as was said and the glowing effect on the last one...well lets be honest I didnt pull it off very well.

So after much thought and a few Black Templar conversions in the meantime to keep myself occupied (GK bits go great with Templars btw!), I decided all I really needed to do was lighten up the colors. It was too dark IMO to look 'Ghostly'. So, here is the result. Improvement or not? Please be brutally honest. I now have two models painted completley different and one of them has to be redone, so their will be no hurt feelings here.

Also, Mordrak's painting is underway. Mostly just basecoating and very little highlighting so far but that is him behind the ghost being used to stop the ghosts base from toppling over. I should be posting the first draft 'finished' version of him tonight or tomorrow.

Anyway, lemme know what you guys think of the new ghost.

This new ghost scheme is definitely a step in the right direction. The whole model really conveys a ghostly feel with the lighter colors. I think you could really play up the glowing aspect of the eyes and specific details in the model. Maybe go with a more contrasting color than the blue.

Consider the idea for the new scheme robbed whenever I get around to doing Mordrak!!

Out of the 3 I would say I like the 2nd one the best. While the armor is darker the glowing stands out more and gives a more ghostly look. The 3rd one to me looks like it was made out of a frosted ice.

Best one yet, but I still stand by my statement of it needing a spot/contrasting color. Something to make it not all blue. You could do it with the eyes and a few other spots, although I wouldn't go overboard with it. Maybe an orange for the eyes? red would be to evil looking.

You've definitely done some fantastic work with the Ghosts here. I am in agreement with the others in regards to, AT LEAST, altering the eyes for a different color. It could even been something akin to Ultramarines Blue or Regal Blue...just to make the eyes really pop out of the ghosts. Sometimes that tends to be the one thing people remember about things, and it would be truly fitting for some survivor...whoever may escape the reach of the GKs, to remember the eyes.

This looks significantly better. I particularly like some subtle parts like the quartered shading on the shoulder shield thingy :D

A second color could definitely do wonders. Maybe green would work best. Use it as a faint glowey shade on select spots like eyes, gun barrels, and swords. It's close enough to blue sot that it doesn't have a blatant contrast but it's different enough to stand out.

Also, curse you!

:cuss

Sorry, I'm just jealous that I have to wait to start playing with GK bits in my own Templars force.

I agree that it looks a bit flat and statue-ish. The problem, as others have mentioned, is contrast, but I think you could have a really nice looking figure if you just imagined a normal Grey Knight desaturated towards black and white, and then colored in a ghostly hue, so... paint the grenades and the weapons and the details as normal, but washed out versions of the colors you would normally use.

This last one looks great, but I'd go with more of a green "glow" to give the ghost feel. Blue is too close to usual GK, and the above example shows just how good green ghost with orange/yellow eyes and glow looks =D

In my opinion the 2nd one was better than the 3rd. That's because the 3rd one has too little contrast and therefore looks flat. I think you really should try what the others have suggested and make another attempt with a second color. More like the 2nd one, but less stoney....

I really like what you are pursuing here, I did like the glow you had going on the runes on your 2nd attempt.

Try this,

Use The Emperor......'s suggestion to shade where you normally highlight, and highlight where you normally shade, Maybe it will look awful, but maybe it will help them look transparent. After all, the thickest parts of the ghost will be the most opaque, and the thinnest parts the clearest.

Use a cool color to make the runes glow, that had potential, maybe make it a bit more subtle.

Finally, use a warm color for the eyes as a contrast.

  • 1 year later...

Well it has literally been a year since I worked on this guy. Far too long. Sorry for the thread necro heh, but I guess when its your own thread all is good??

Anyways with the birth of a second son, a few video games sucking me in, working 60 hours a week and a second non-space marine project I put away all my marines for the last year. I also suffer from horrible hobby add.

I have approximately 5-6k points worth of Templars to get painted, about the same in Grey Knights, and twice this in Space wolves. So although I didnt make it official with an LPC vow or anything like that, I'm vowing anyways to get fieldable armies painted in all three this year.

All that aside, I started painting up Mordrak today, he is NOT completed by any means but I figured a couple WIP shots before I finish him off tonight were in order. I'm by no means a good painter, I have more talent with the conversion aspect but I think I've given him a fair run so far with my mediocre skills. C&C appreciated.

And this is a similar view to the first but with a less yellow lighting. I normally take pic's outside with nice daylight but its overcast today so the hobby table had to do.

Great idea and you've pulled it off with aplomb, but might I suggest switching out the reds on Mordrak to blues to tie him in with the ghosts a bit more? Great work on the army either way, but I feel it might create more cohesion with the army as a whole, as the contrast between the colourful Mordrak and the monochromatic ghosts is a bit stark at the moment.

I have actually changed the color scheme of the ghosts to the more commonly seen green. I found it easier to get a desirable effect that way. The base of Mordrak will also be in green and if I can pull it off a bit of OSL on his armor to match. Hopefully that will be enough to tie them together.
