In Midnight Clad - A Night Lords log

Recommended Posts

And I'm back! What's a guy gotta do to get some comments around here? I'm a terrible self-motivator. :sad.:

And I'm back! Thanks for the words of encouragement in the slump! It always helps, even if I don't do incremental progress posts between!

I had hoped to have this pictures up before I went to LA for E3, but a lack of basing materials got in the way.

On with the show!

Squad Red-Coffin-White-Rune ready for duty!

Again, no flesh ornamentations. Those sorts of things take too much time in the middle of battle when you could be yelling "BOO!" from dark corners and scaring the enemy. There will be plenty of time for skinning AFTER the battle.

The sergeant turned out really nicely overall. One of the power claws snapped off, but I'll replace that eventually. Love the way his bone mask turned out and using the winged helmets to denote rank has really worked out for me overall. The guy on the left was the overly shiny guy above, and the matte varnish worked out great.

The MKVI I really like due to the way the shade worked on him. The shoulder pad is one of the old metal Chaos Night Lords pads, with the trim filed down.

I tried to vary things up with the MKIII suits in this squad. I hate painting them. So many niggle details and fine lines that just snap off with the slightest bit of pressure. Bleh. I like the varied faces. Works overall since there are more than one or two in this particular squad.

The skull mask might be one of my favourites. Adding his squad markings either side of the legion symbol (same for the guy on the right) varies things up nice

The skull guy is in here again, as is the guy on the left, but I change my photo lineup mid-shoot. The MKIII guy's lighting on the faceplate is OKAY, but I don't think I'll be using it again. The guy with the meltabomb was my test model for this unit. His lightning I really enjoy.

That's all for now! Three whole squads completed so far!

Anyway, this will be my last Night Lords unit while I do a couple of my Saim-Hann Eldar to vary things up. Once I've done a couple of them, I'll probably do a vehicle for the Night Lords. Maybe the Sicaran.

Red-Coffin-White-Rune are looking sharp! I like the mix of armor marks the squad has.

Also, the Sicaran is my favorite piece of armor. Just slap on bolter sponsons and watch my eldar-loving "friends" cower in terror in its presence.

It's a long, slow road ahead for me. I'm not the fastest painter, but man it does feel good to be making SOME progress. Once I've clear my massive, massive backlog, it'll be paint-then-buy for quite some time. No more bulk purchases for me! (I swear!)

Anyway, I had a pretty busy July 4th weekend and managed to find some time to make a Praetor. Or Captain. Or something. He looks cool.

The Fist is from the Alexis Pollux miscast I had, the body is from the Tyberos the Red Wake I bought while playing around with alternatives to FW Cataphractii (you know, before they existed, because that's how damned slow I am). Plus Tartaros arms, for variety.

Deep breath.

Here we go!

Not wanting to deal with all the amount of airbrush Vallejo Imperial Blue, I sought out alternatives. I'd undercoated it with Army Painted white primer, then did a coat of Tamiya TS-55 Dark Blue. Most recently I did the 'top down' highlight layer with Vallejo Model Air Magic Blue.

It's drying before I apply Drakenhof Nightshade to the entire model to blend things and tone down the Magic Blue.

Hopefully this ends up looking close to the same tone as my troops! I don't have THAT MANY vehicles to do for the NIght Lords - just this and a MkIIB Land Raider for now. I'll probably expand once I've caught up with the NL and Eldar backlog.

Making some progress on the Sicaran. Waiting for the Asurmen blue wash to dry on the lightning.

Vehicles are my achilles heel. I'm happy with how it's turning out though. Breaking up the faded blue with the black and silver segments was a smart choice IMHO.

Almost... There. I have no idea how you guys churn stuff out so fast.

Just need to paint the housing on the guns, and I think the front sight (probably to black) Guns are just resting on there for now.

Overall, really pleased with it for my first VIII Legion vehicle.

I think I'm done!

Once it's dried, I'll seal it and take some "proper" photos. :smile.:

And yeah, I know I failed to clean up some of the mould lines on the guns, but honestly, I was so excited to paint it AND I was really, really nervous about doing so... Yeah. Can't win em all.

I think the red, gold, black and metal accents really set off against the blue nicely without any one secondary colour coming across too strong.

A nice 3/4 view. Let's be honest - The Sicaran looks BEST with an aiming gun. I'm also really, really pleased with how the gold/bronze turned out.

I was pleased with the decals and lighting on the top. Definitely wanted to not have too much symmetry. Kill markings on the cupola.

I love how the colour balance ended up.

And I think it matches with the infantry really well in the end. I'm very pleased with this as a first vehicle. I have a Mk IIB Land Raider for later, but I'm not sure what else I want to add. Maybe a Whirlwind or something. I have quite the backlog to get through before I buy anything new.
