"We fly on The Wings of Fortuna, defending those that can't defend themselves"

The Scions of Fortuna were a chapter of undocumented founding. They have also been prone to being under-power due to horrendous gene mutation.Shortly after M39 the chapter was almost wiped out by a chaos warband,so small were the chapter's numbers. The remainder of the chapter has taken to crusading in an old battle barge, helping out governors and such in precarious situations on Hive worlds.

ORIGINS

Geneseed

The chapter has an undocumented beginning and a possible gene-link to Raven Gaurd, though this is a speculation by scholars that have nothing beter to do than go through old records.Other scholars like to think that the partially barbaric side of these marines actually indicates :the tribal ideals of the White Scars.Every scholar has a different view and either (or all) ideas could be correct.

Founding Date:

This chapter was possibly founded anywhere from M35 to M36.Like most Chapters from The Founding, the Inquisition keeps the documentation private to avoid others poking their noses in.

Founding Chapter:

The Age of Apostasy dawned in M35.Many chapters were sent to keep off riots and purge new cults. This being said,The Space Wolves were one of the nearest chapters and most available. So they sent a Veteran Sergeant, one squad of reserve assault, devastator and tactical marines. So The Space Wolves were unofficially deemed the Founding fathers.

Fortress Monastery:

The planet of Lazerus,a dead world near Urdesh containing only a derelict Fortress Monastery and a few Iron mines.Servitors work these mines to grant The Scions something to barter with the Adeptus Mechanicus to buy weaponry, large repairs and vehicles.Even so,the Adeptus Mechanicus can't give much for Iron,so the chapter is usually found to have old and battered machinery. The world is not often used as the chapter is on a continuous crusade, and only stops back to pick up resources.

BRIEF HISTORY:

The first public records of The Scions of Fortuna is when the news of a warband attacking the extremely under-powered homeworldof Kilnith Trecenti after 305.M37.The chapter had a dispatched crusading unit drifting through the Ultima Segmentum.A period of 2 millenia went by with only small mentions of a drifting chapter here and there. This time of 'darkness' was ended when a Daemonic cult started on Solstice, which was abruptly put down by The Scions of Fortuna in coalition with a squad of Crimson Fist tactical marines and a Vostroyan defence force. This battle not only purged the Hereticus cult from Solstice, but also honored The Scions for their amazing work in such a City Fight. From then on,they started again with new spirits and a few new strategies added to their repertoire. They went on from there to be granted full admission in several systems as long as they came at the governor in question's call.

Battles of Note:

Will be added later

COMBAT DOCTRINE

Their affinity for City Fights has forced them to have a strategical change. The Codex Astartes indicates CityFights in a general way.Strategies in the Codex are perfect for normal chapters, but being under 200 marines at full strength means the Codex doesn't help at all.The Chapter is arranged like so:

Strike Hud[strike Captain Rurk]-The incognito, assassins and warriors of the shadow, these men take their hidden war to a new level.

Strike Mund-The heavier weapons. From a mad marine with a huge power axe to a devastator marine with a plasma cannon

Strike Spordr-Also known as 'The Clean up Crew',These are marines adroit at the art of crowd control. They can kill multiple units thrice there unit size in shorter time than their other brothers.

Each of these Strike's have veterans and scouts depending on the said marine's ability. All of these are used in a City Fight,as indicated in the Codex Fortunis.

"We fly on The Wings of Fortuna, defending those that can't defend themselves. For we are the Cursed, the defeated, but our curse is not theirs.Use your curse to help the beggar, farmer and governor. All are our responsibility, let you not forget this."

-extract from The Codex Fortunis

Their battered Battle Barge named The Wings of Fortuna is a relic. This is how each Strike get to their position, usually a cruise vessel is deployed silently from the barge, each Strike to it's own vessel. These cruisers speed down to the planet below, giving the Strikes a speedy yet

silent approach to the turmoil below. This is also because the chapter never participates(unless in extreme neccesity)in any other battles. The exclusiveness of City Fights is a strange fetish that these marines have, but a good one because even though they may have mediocre standings elsewhere,in City Fights they are among the best.

ORGANISATION

The Scions of Fortuna are organised into 3 Strikes. Each Strike has a leader(Strike Captain). The over-all leader(Strike Master) is literally the Chapter-master,but due to the fact that the Administratum deemed them Minimus-Corruo,the chapter isn't formally called a chapter.Though informally it is known that these men fight for humanity just as any other chapter.

Strike Hud:Strike Captain Rurk,Master of the Mind

  • 10 Shadow Warriors (including 1 shadow master and scout)
  • 1 Assault Master
  • 1 Apothecarion
  • 5 Deathbringers (including 1 veteran sergeant)
  • 3 Deathgaurd (including sergeant and standard)
  • 5 Pathfinders (including sergeant)

Strike Mund:Strike Captain Thorik,Master of Destruction

  • 15 Devastator marines (including sergeant, veteran and scout)
  • 15 Tactical Marines (including sergeant,veteran and 3 scouts)
  • 1 Apothecarion
  • 2 Metal Priests (Master of Metal and 1 Metal Priest)
  • 5 Deathgaurd (Including sergeant and standard)
  • 2 Assault Masters

Strike Spordr:Strike Captain Flaron,Master of the Flame

  • 15 Flame Bearers (including sergeant,veteran and 2 scouts)
  • 10 Barbarics (including sergeant,veteran and scout)
  • 10 Devastator Marines (including sergeant, veteran, standard and apothecary)

In addition, the Vostroyan 307th regiment is permanantly posted with the chapter, even going so far as to being placed aboard The Wing of Fortuna.

RECRUITMENT

Recruiting Origins:

Unfortunately, because of the aforesaid mutations, death was ripe in recruits.Only 1 in 10 survived. The problem was obviously the biscopea was growing at a faster rate.Too fast. The biscopea grows the natural rib cage at such an alarming rate that the natural lung is crushed. Those that are early developers, are mainly survivors and come out better for it.After realising their mistake,Adeptus Mechanicus cut off their Gene supply shortly into their command of a homeworld. They were in the process of recruiting and had 120 marines. To try prove they were worthy of the Geneseed,a crusade in the Ultima Segmentum.20 marines were left to guard the homeworld. The rest left on the Honour Crusade. The homeworld was lost to chaos.A year of mourning was then held to honour the lost brothers.

Space Wolves always held a closeness with The Scions of Fortuna for the simple fact that the wolven chapter only had one real successor chapter,so Th Scions were treated like successors.Like sons. When the fall of The Scions came about,The Space Wolves and The Scions of Fortuna came to an agreement, for every 10 Space Wolves that became a scout,1 would be attached to The Scions. This was agreed on as long as The Scions paid The Space Wolves a percentage of their iron. This has not been found out by the Inquisition only because of The Scion's minimal size.Being only 100 or less marines works to their advantage.

Initiation:

To become a full brother,a scout must follow a brother around on his duties, whether they be drinking in the local bar or purging a genestealer cult. They must go through 6 months of this, then they are ready to don the power armour.

"...In this way all are equal when they enter the battle,no brother will be unkowing of his duty.No brother will be intimidated, all will be the imbodiment of Feare..."

-extract from "The Codex Fortunis" ,explaining the need for such training.

BELIEFS

The Scions of Fortuna have the belief that The Emperor is a hero but their main belief is that Fortuna rules all life.Fortuna goes hand in hand with Feare.

Fortuna:

Fortuna is luck. The Scions believe luck runs your life. You depend on it for survival.Fortuna is not some god,it is a force almost. These are men that believe in luck, they care not for religion. All they want is to help the Imperium survive.

"...Fortuna can change.Deal with he situation at hand and not about the situation about to happen for you cannot control Fortuna anymore than you can control the size of a planet."

-extract from "The Codex Fortunis",explaining how Fortuna can affect a battle and what to do

Feare:

Feare is the name given to Leman Russ.He is the man that all Scions live by.Being a spiritual leader, his ways of battle will remain strong in the hearts of the Scions.

"Strike Feare in the hearts of the enemy.Let them know the name by seeing our battle, and then seeing their own blood.Theirs will be the fate of a heretic,a xeno,or a daemon. But our fate is that of a hero for Feare is in our blood and our eyes until the dieing day!"

-extract from "The Codex Fortunis"

Rites:

The Scions of Fortuna have no Rites or Chants. They simply live in the moment, expectant but never hoping. This is how a brother marine lives.

HEROES

Before The Scion's 'dark age',no brothers were recorded doing deeds of might. Now it is a different story, with heroes popping up all over.

Here are the most heroic among those.

Tremalthamin Rurk:

After a brother with the gene of the original chapter falls in battle, his organs are then used for those few that want to join the chapter. As stated before, only a certain number survive. This was the case when Rurk joined.

He has had experience in a whole number of battles, but is very weak. The reason he survived the speedy biscopea growth was purely because he had issues with bone growth that had not shown themselves until he was already into his scout training. This means he is not as well equipped as other marines in the way of heavy armour of heavy weaponry, but he makes up for his lack of strength with a brilliant mind.He is part of Strike Hud ,but acts as the command in that Strike, which may be why they are so successful.

I've done a little more..C&C welcome...still not fully finished yet :P

One really GLARING problem, I see, is Space Marines aren't "mercenaries"... Heck even "renegade" Chapters, despite the crap that is the Soul Drinkers, are rare... The entire existance of being for a Marine is faith and spirituality... It can be a faith in superiority, faith in the Emperor, in combat, the Omnissiah, whatever... But it is intangible... A Marine doesn't fight for money, or glory... He fights for fighting's sake... To kill and die is reward in adn of itself...

Furthermore, Chapter Master Badass can't really march into Bob's Guard Surplus store, plop some Imperial cred on the table and order 100 bolter rounds... >.<

Also, Also... Marine power armor is only effective after undergoing the implantation of the Black Carapace synapse nodes underneath the initiate's skin... That is why regular humans have their Own armor, that looks abit Like Marine Power Armor, but isn't... Because becoming a Space Marine is pretty freaking insane... Easier to just don some spiffy armor, instead...

If they really Are going to be renegades, they're also going to run into Huge supply problems... Chapters aren't common... At All... You're more likely to run into an Imperial Guard or Imperial Navy force 10 times out of 10, then f ever running into fellow Brethren to mooch supplies off of... That is part of the tragedy of Marines; They can repair, and probably sustain themselves for a little while, but without the aid of Mechanicus, and Their hold on ancient and eldritch technologies, a Chapter will never live...

Ok, I'll have a go... ;)

In addition, the Vostroyan 307th regiment is permanantly posted with the chapter, even going so far as to being placed aboard The Wing of Fortuna.

No. I don't think this works. There was a reason that the Imperial Army was never put under Space Marine command - it was tried and the humans just couldn't keep up. I can see what you're trying to do here, I had tried it myself, but it's quite simply that humans are bagage to marines.

Unfortunately, because of the aforesaid mutations, death was ripe in recruits. Only 1 in 10 survived. The problem was obviously the biscopea was growing at a faster rate.

It's not obvious to us :P

After realising their mistake, Adeptus Mechanicus cut off their Gene supply shortly into their command of a homeworld. They were in the process of recruiting and had 120 marines. To try prove they were worthy of the Geneseed, a crusade in the Ultima Segmentum. 20 marines were left to guard the homeworld. The rest left on the Honour Crusade. The homeworld was lost to chaos. A year of mourning was then held to honour the lost brothers.

This bit about the geneseed needs clarity - how about: "Due to the imperfections in their geneseed and the horrible rates of aberrant implants, the Adeptus Mechanicus refused to produce any more geneseed for the chapter." This is the difficulty with (potentially) Raven Guard geneseed as the RG get their tithe back from the Admech as they have so many problems too, although this solves some of it by cutting them off completely. I'm unsure a crusade to prove worth would sway the Admech by just saying "hey look we're loyal and really need it ok?"

Also - Chaos took the planet - how? Why?

I would dump this or re-write it. Why would the Space Wolves like you, why would they give you their recruits when the Canis Helix geneseed makes every recruit a valuable asset becasue so few survive it? Why would the Space Wolves trade a recruit for scrap metal?

To become a full brother, a scout must follow a brother around on his duties, whether they be drinking in the local bar or purging a genestealer cult. They must go through 6 months of this, then they are ready to don the power armour.

Ok this needs to be re-worded, how about:"and each neophyte, once inducted must serve as an equerry to a full Battle Brother, no matter the duties nor the risks involved for a period of no less than a year." Six months isn't very long for these things, remember, ritual, mysticism and dogma all hold back advancement at speed - which is frowned upon generally IIRC.

The Scions of Fortuna have the belief that The Emperor is a hero but their main belief is that Fortuna rules all life. Fortuna goes hand in hand with Feare.

Fortuna:

Fortuna is luck. The Scions believe luck runs your life. You depend on it for survival. Fortuna is not some god, it is a force almost. These are men that believe in luck, they care not for religion.

Technically that could be described as a religion. Remember that it is very comon for Marines to venerate the Emperor not as a god, but as a great man, but man nontheless. They revere their Primarch as a great hero and ancestor, but also remember:

"The foolish put their Trust in luck, the Wise put their faith in the Emperor." An old Imperial saying. To go all out against this could call into question your Chapter's loyalties. Since they are so small they are at risk and this certainly wouldn't help if they're trying to convice a very religious/dogmatic/mystic AdMech to lend them more geneseed.

Feare:

Feare is the name given to Leman Russ. He is the man that all Scions live by. Being a spiritual leader, his ways of battle will remain strong in the hearts of the Scions.

Awesome and very true, but is what you're saying that you want to be "like Space Wolves but...."?

HEROES

Before The Scion's 'dark age', no brothers were recorded doing deeds of might. Now it is a different story, with heroes popping up all over.

May want to re-word this to: "Not many great feats were done in those early days, as the Chapter struggled with itself, but with a resurgence in strength, the Chapter has put it's mark upon the galaxy with deeds fitting for Adeptus Astartes."

Some interesting ideas, need to flesh them all out - sorry that's all I have right now...
