Simple Display Bases

Here's a little tutorial about making a simple display base. This example is nothing fancy but the same methods can be applied to better make better looking display bases.

 

First you need to find yourself a nice bit of MDF and draw round some plastic bases where you want your troops to go.

I decided to have a 10 man squad, a 5 man squad, a 5 man terminator squad and a leader on my base.

To drill the holes you need to find a type of drill bit called called a Flat Spade Drill bit for wood. For the smaller bases you need a 25mm bit and for terminator bases you need a 40mm bit.

When you drill yours holes make them deep enough so your base is flush with the top of the base. I used a couple of spare bases to test as I went along. When all holes are drilled you have a base that looks like this:

The base is now ready for you to add terrain, sand/flock and whatever else takes your fancy. Obviously you want this to match the bases for your troops that are going on the base. Here is a photo of my base with some debris, sand and undercoated black.

Very nice and understandable tutorial accompanied by good pictures. I like it.

 

It shows off the very basic method of creating a display board (btw, you might want to change the title to Simple Display Boards, because Bases could be a bit misleading) and that is often all you need for more ideas to come out ^^

Great idea. You ever think that the little hole in the middle of the indents could insert a magnet. Then put a metal washer underneath the models to give them added weight on the battle field for "Clumsy Model Syndrome". So once you put the model on the display board they are magnetically held in place. Also that if the board gets bumped or you have to move it quick a lot of models do not fall off. What do you think?
