Clever Girl... - Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge

Greyall

Recommended Posts

Greetings, boys and girls, and welcome to a project I'll be seeing through to its completion.

The idea is to depict the chief raptor of every Legion and, in the end, to hear from you that my armour and character designs rock! So cast aside feeble notions of painting and colourization, for my head burns with ideas. Here are the first two:

Scciroc, Who Taints the Skies - Sorceror-Raptor of the Thousand Sons

http://th01.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2011/285/e/e/scciroc__who_taints_the_skies_by_greyall-d4clb6x.jpg

Incorporated ideas: Coexistence between Tzeench's avian and mutational aspects; Magnus' cyclopean nature - hence the half-plain, half-lavish helmet; many many eyes; kept his armour free of damage, as I envision it to be like an absolutely still water-mirror. Had a blast drawing this guy, and I'm pretty proud of the helm and armour design.

Mattur, the Roaming Plague - Assault Commander of the Death Guard

http://th03.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2011/285/e/5/mattur__the_roaming_plague_by_greyall-d4clc3h.jpg

Incorporated ideas: Bloated stomach and the usual assortment of repugnancy in all Death Guard legionnaires; corrupted melta-gun (you don't want to feel THAT heat); many, many censors; cracked armour; Nurgle's 'smile'; noxious gas-propulsion; fly wings, fragile and damaged, contrasting with the known resistance of the Legion. I don't really like the Nurgle design - not that it isn't well thought-of - since I'm not a fan of disgusting things, but I think it came out quite well, in the end, and I managed to produce a worthy Death Guard commander.

Thanks for viewing, guys. Let me know what you think.

Your armor and character designs rock! :ermm:

Seriously, good work. They're really busy and full of details, which makes finding a focus point a bit hard. However, with all those awesome details, they don't really need one, as it's fun enough to just search the image for more stuff ^^

Raptors are the assault squads of the Legions basically - They became raptors and consolidated into a single cult over the course of time in the Eye.

I've always preferred the idea of raptors still loyal to their legion and/or thier legions' patron god. This is a brilliant project and by all means, continue thinking outside the box. :ermm:

Is it coincidental, or do your designs look similar to those from the Age of Reckoning game? I'm not insulting you by any stretch...frankly, as awesome as those are I wouldn't be surprised in the least if you were on the artistic team, but were you?

Scciroc may be my favorite thing you've done. :)

It's one of mine, for sure.

Thanks, everyone. Got a little cornered there by Raptor lore, what with the cult thing, but looking at Lucoryphus, he follows the Legion (part of it, at least) around. The idea is for these guys to be the Raptors closest to their Primarchs/Commanders.

Well, right now I've got the Alpha Legion guy in the making, and I'll make the Night Lords one next, then.

As for other projects, they'll have to wait, but a Space Wolf sounds good.

Lord Mephistopheles, send me a PM with your request. Just know that it'll have to wait for the Raptor project to finish.

@Solid Zaku: Scciroc definitely drew some influence from Age of Reckoning, although not actively, since I came up with most of the designs during a class. But AoR is one of the best sources for Tzeench motiffs, surely. As for Mattur, he kind of grew from the censor that is his jump pack.

Not to derail this wonderful thread, but can you cite your source in regards to the raptor cult worshipping some "raptor god", Emperor's Champ? I've never heard such a thing and I'm wondering if it's new lore I've missed since I was away.

Not new stuff. IIRC, it would be 3rd or 4th edition in the Index Astartes article about Raptors.

White Dwarf 231 article: Harbingers Of Doom

It would seem likely that the Raptors became dedicated worshippers

of one of the Chaos gods, and that their appearance reflects this in

some way, just as the Thousand Sons, Khorne Berzerkers and Plague

Marines all have an appearance which reflects aspects of their patron

god. However, exactly who the Raptors worship is by no means clear;

it could be one of the major Chaos Gods, such as Tzeentch or

Slaanesh, but is more likely to be one of the plethora of minor Chaos

deities, that while not as powerful as the major powers, are every bit

as dangerous and evil.

Whoever they worship, as time has passed the Raptors have become

ever more corrupted, their armour mutated by some strange force of

Chaos so that it no longer bears anything other than a passing

resemblance to the power armour it once was.

There's another source somewhere that talks about the Raptor god. Dunno where tho.

Hmmm...well, still, I'm sure it's plausible to assume that at least a few assault marines per Legion stuck to their Primarchs/Legion Command and beliefs, while still feeling the thrill of the hunt. Or, a previously cookie-cutter Raptor somehow saw the benefits of joining a larger Legion/warband and ended up becoming a lieutenant. Again, Lucoryphus seems to be a pretty cooperative fella', for a crawling carnivore, so I'm not too worried. And I promise not to go over any established character.

In that sense, the Night Lord is becoming troublesome...I've been suggested that Zso Sahaal embodies the Legion's nature almost perfectly, but I also read that he's seen as a traitor for deserting the 1st Company. I could draw the Raptor lieutenant to Krieg Acerbus, but I'm afraid those guys seem too far lost...

Any help? I could simply draw a new character, or Lucoryphus, but he's pretty much an animal.

Great stuff, I'm definitely a fan. If I had to nitpick I'd say that Mattur looks a little too heavy to actually take off. If you ever revise him maybe take the insectile theme from the wings up a step. Multiple or multi-jointed legs. If you can find a way to make his body skinnier while keeping a little of the plague bloat that would look perfect. Still, this is just idle ideas. I really like all the work.

I totally love Scciroc's mask, too.

EDIT/Response:

I'd go for a raptor in service to Acerbus. Mutation makes for some visually interesting stuff.

This quote doesn't say one way or another who Raptors worship, nor does it mention any "Raptor God." It even says they just might generally worship one of the big four. So it's completely within the background for them to worship other gods or no really follow the "Raptor Cult." Any chaos space marines with a jump pack was called a Raptor anyway.

I second going with one from Krieg's company. That guy would be straight up brutal. Love both the other raptors; they look amazing.

++edit: Amazing JP reference, btw++

Going with Acerbus' Raptor surely opens up a few more possibilities.

Not sure I follow on that "reference", mate, what do you mean with JP?

"You clever girl." is a line from the movie Jurassic Park, which I assume is what Vilicate means when he says JP.

Really love the artwork. Cant wait to see the Alpha Legion

Greyall you are fast becoming a favourite artist of mine. Scirroc is rad beyond words, evoking Tzeentchian images in my mind from the length and breadth of my hobby lifetime.

Mattur is also rad, but seems less so. I think I put that down entirely to his angle from the camera, and his pose. Armour design, nurgle flavour, attention to detail are all top notch.

How many more does your project extend to? Another seven? Oh goody goody gumdrops.
