At the risk of sounding folksy and nostalgic, your painting reminds me of my first few models. Lots of concentration on details (only admittedly yours is better) but missing the bigger picture.

The tear drop, for instance, is fantastic. As is the individuality of the armour. But the black lacks depth, and some other bits are a bit messy.

For the black, try either highlighting with adeptus battle grey (for subtlety) or codex grey (for a real impact).

I'm with Mike on this one. You've got your base colours down, and some good brush control. Your brush control will only get better with practice. The fact that you're willing to even try freehand detailing is very good, now refine those skills and use them to highlight.

Highlighting on the top edges of armour plates and hard lines are what are going to make these really pop. All of the reds and blacks will come to life with just a little highlighting effort along top edges. Practice on some sprew or 'scrap' mini bits before committing to a finished miniature. Paint a solid base, hit it with a shading wash, and once dry add some simple 2 or 3 step highlights, and you'll be amazed at the results and how easy it was.

A very thin wash on the whites will also add much depth. A very pale blue or grey will make a nice 'cool cloth' feel (also good for headlights/searchlights) and a pale golden brown will give a bone/parchment-like effect. Going a little darker will require you go back and add some highlights, but bright white is very strong, and will 'push through' washes well.

Cheers for the input guys, I thought highlighting the black might get picked up on. I'll definitely get to it, but before I try I think I'll focus on getting a few more marines and an HQ to this sort of level (but with all their parts finished of course). My level of brush control may be slightly misleading, copious amounts of skull white and chaos black are used tidying up some of the details, especially the little lines and patterns on the legs.

Captain Mike - could you tell me what you find messy? I know I'm not the world's best painter yet but I quite pride myself on at least being neat with what I can do. I have noticed in these macro photos that the metal on some of the bayonets looks a bit splotchy. Could that be because I've used my Badab Black wash incorrectly?

Subtle Discord - I certainly have lot's of sprayed black sprue lying around; that's a great, simple practice tip, thanks. I'm still quite new to washes and all I have is Badab Black and Gryphonite Sepia. I know the black is good for metal so all the metallic bits of the weapons have had a coat and the sepia is supposed to be good for parchment coloured stuff. So far I've only deployed that on the sergeant's robes, then I did a thin coat of bleached bone on top. I'd be quite reluctant to wash any of my white bits because I like them as vibrant as they are (plus it takes an age to do get them there and I dont want to ruin all my hard work!!!)

I REALLY like the varied helmets, it adds variety while not breaking the 'we are the same force' bubble.

Cheers, mate. To be honest I only started doing that because I was getting bored of making them all the black and white version of Harvey Dent , but I've become quite fond of it so it's definitely going to be repeated throughout the force. I'm looking for more ideas on what to do with the patterns because so far I generally have variations on quartering and halving. I recently aquired some mk.4 heads for Vanguard Vets and I experimented with giving those a fairly wide white stripe down the middle of the face. Could extend the idea to regular marine helmets.

Anyway, I've got a slight update. My ebay devastators arrived today so I've spent a fair whack of time cutting, trimming and filing all the guns. Annoyingly, the only piece missing from the entire box was the top part of the multimelta backpack so I've re-evaluated what I'll give No Arms. I decided I'll give him a missile launcher and possible stick him in the dev. squad. Anyway I was mucking about with ideas for his pose and have two to choose from. Which do you guys think is best?

His head isn't really facing the right way for this one so I may save it and use it on a different model.

Also, I forgot to include this chap last time round. He's going to be a Vanguard Sergeant.

Still very WIP. I tried some different techniques on his details. With the laurel on his claw I used a snot green base then mixed it with skull white (no idea of the ratio) to try and highlight the edges of the leaves. Can you tell? How does it look? With the rope I started with a scorched brown base, went over each individual bit of it with vermin brown, washed with badab black and then went over it again with some vermin brown. It looks far better than what I attempted on the Tac squad veteran sergeant I think. I gave the leg parchment a wash with the sepia and again, I think it looks pretty good. Are there any wash tutorials about? I ask because I think I can get the hang of the washes on a small detail but on something larger like the sergeant's robes or the combat knives I can't help but feel it looks streaky.

Finally, I want to use the Commander lightning claw with this model because I feel it finished the pose well but it doesn't have the laurel on the claw and that's going to bother me.

Thanks for looking, please add your C &C.

Well today I decided to attack the Tac. Sergeant with my washes after going over a couple of online tutorials. His robe and rope belt were given a fair bit of attention and I think the improvement is plain to see.
Posted Image

Most of today's painting was spent doing the endless layers of white required for the squad's second shoulder pad. I got a couple done, though, and to break up the monotony decided to do the squad and campaign markings on them. I got some backpacks out their bag (I spent a few hours one night doing every pack in the army so that until I buy new models I won't have to do one again, ditto with the bases) and chucked those on all marines and fitted the finished pads to a couple of marines.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

In my army there are 4 main campaign badges: +, v, o and c. Being a young chapter (which is about as far as my fluff goes) I think it makes sense that they only have a few campaigns in which members could have distinguished themselves.

The little blast symbol on the Assault Weapon Specialist is something I've just thought about adding to each one. I quite like how it came out and along with the armour style, backpack and right shoulderpad it's another way of distinguishing these marines from their brothers in arms. In this chapter, carrying a meltagun/plasmagun/flamer is an hinour and a privilege that has to be earned through deeds and is marked with an elevation of status shown in their bearer's distinctness.

By the way, I've been looking into greys for highlighting the armour, would charadon granite do the trick? I'd like fairly dark highlights.

My Tac. squad (prior to learning how to highlight) is more or less done now. Just a little freehand and shoulder pad rim work to do. So I thought I'd start something else to break it up a little: Kitbash Techmarine! I've had a lot of these parts sitting around for a little while and it'll be a very different scheme to anything else I've done so far, a lot more metal and red.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

The behemoth on his arm is supposed to represent both the plasma-cutter and flamer as an all in one cutting/welding device

Posted Image

Pads and one last servo arm I'm looking to fit somewhere. Was thinking about getting these for him and his friend (got the parts for another techmarine too).

I'll be temping for at least two months now so I won't have as much time on my hands as I have lately for painting. I'll still try and get enough done for some updates.

So, despite working 55 hours over the last seven days with only one day off, I've finished all the pad work on the Tac. squad. Their heavy weapon guy will have to wait a while before he can join the squad as I ran out of black spray paint and I don't have the cash to spare on more just yet.

A little more progress on the Techmarine with his pads finished and fitted. His scheme is deliberately 'normal' as, amongst the Crimson Tears, it's usually equipment and insignia that differentiate them rather than armour colours.:

Inspired by the effect I achieved on the Tac. Sergeant's robes I've added a bit of shading work to the Chaplain's tabard

I've also begun work on some other bits and pieces:

Your robes and scrolls are really nice! It took me such a long time (until very recently) to be able to do them to a way that I was pleased with!

The kitbash techmarine is stellar. Can't wait to see it when it's finished!

Thanks! I actually found it amazingly easy to do once I had a little play with my Gryphonne Sepia wash. Literally all I've used to do any robes/parchment is bleached bone and that wash, it's a remarkably effective recipe considering its simplicity. I've started work on the huge banner adorned with trinkets you get on the Ravenwing sprue now, just because I feel like I've got this particular technique down.

I'm glad you like the Techmarine, he started mainly because GW ones are too expensive for me and I dislike dealing with metal models but I'm really warming to him. Progress might slow down as I've pulled some truly horrific shifts at my new job this week. Ugh.

You're making good progress and I like the color scheme. Even though black, red and white are often used colors, you put them together quite nicely. I also like that you painted all the markings freehand-style. Are you possibly a fellow decal-hater?

Modelling-wise, there are still some mold lines on parts that should be removed, I'm guessing that's a result of painting things on the sprue. Have you tried assembling a model more completely before you start painting? It usually makes the painting process a lot faster and you don't paint things you'll cover up with bits later.

And what is that helmet on the Vanguard Sergeant?

You know you've been modeling too much...

Update time. Despite only being contracted for 25 hours a week my boss is getting me to do at least 45 at the moment. Such is the life of the temp hoping for a permanent position. Anyway, enough whining about my real life (after all, I need the money for some nice new paints and brushes to play with) it's update time!

The Techmarine has had his welding/cutting counts-as flamer and plasma-cutter monstrosity painted and attached:
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

I've started work on one of his Servo skulls too:
Posted Image
Posted Image

I'm planning on doing three or four and placing them on/around a ruined wall section on a 40 mm base to count as servitors

The assault marine's lower leg got finished up and one of the servo arms got some metal work done on the joints and end :
Posted Image

In keeping with my new passion for cloth and parchment I finished the rear of the Chaplain's tabbard and the front half of the big Ravenwing piece:
Posted Image
Posted Image

I also did one of the Death Company shoulder pads as a test piece (it needs a little tidying up at the pad rims):
Posted Image

As these have a solitary blood drop on them they potentially make very good pads for the Crimson Tears, however the Sanguinius in the raised guard bothers me. I'm not sure whether (despite the obvious imagery of the tear) I want them to be associated with the Blood Angels.

I also started working on a few of the myriad icons you end up with having bought both the Ravenwing and Dark Angels Veterans sprues:

cathar the great - thanks very much for your kind words! I am indeed a decal hater, I have horrible memories of trying to deal with them when starting my first space marine army aged 14 (Blood Angels if anyone was wondering). I used to hate painting and so when I was applying decals as a finishing touch it was a quite a big deal. When they invariably tore/went on at odd angles/gradually flaked off it was infuriating and dispiriting. Thus I refuse to use them and have only my barely adequate freehand to use for squad and chapter markings.

That tactical squad has been sitting around undercoated for quite some time, it's only really in the last couple of months that I've become aware of mold lines. Anything new that I purchase tends to get smoothed down pretty well so I am learning from my mistakes. Now that they're done I can't face defacing them to remove the lines...
I don't really know why, but I don't like constructing models before painting them, I feel it hinders my efforts and I'm not really bothered about painting stuff that then gets a bit covered up. I've already painted all the heads for my future kitbash Chaplain's Vanguard squad and I'll certainly paint up the torso's and weapons separately before building them. On models which will have lots of kit or bits my limited palette can often lead to colours merging or clashing and having everything ready before assembly can help negate that.

The Vanguard Sergeant's head is one of the Venerable Dreadnought options; I love it, it looks really quite menacing and is very suitable for someone who is about to slash his enemies to death with giant claws.

Update! This week I felt a bit sick of the stuff on my desk so I pulled out some other things to play with. I have done some work on the techmarine, assault marine, pads, servo skulls etc. but not enough to be update worthy.

I went looking through the 40 or so marines from previous years and happened upon my command squad. Redoing the whole thing was too much work to think about right now so I selected the simplest member to rejuvenate. I thickened up his white somewhat, went over the angel on his pack (wings still need doing) and re-did the laurel on his should pad (that still needs some highlights). The most complete part of his makeover is the parchment on his left shoulder. I'm not sure if the pose comes out in the photos but he looks like he's about to swipe at an enemy with his power sword, I'm actually quite pleased with the dynamism.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Mr. Angry, the Chaplain, finally found time to stop hitting enemies with his magic stick and ask the Techmarine for some paint so some details have been filled in. 'Belt buckle', skeletal toes, skull on right knee and the skulls on the plasma pistol. I tried to make sure the bone tone of his face toes and skeletal decorations was significantly lighter than the parchment.

The last thing I've made progress on is the Chaplain and Vanguard squad. I painted pretty much all the heads and started on the Sergeant's torso.

Great progress, keep it up! It's really enjoyable to watch you progress. Your technique is getting noticeably better-and-better. This thread is proof positive that you can start simple, and once you've got some practice and more confidence, go back and bring things up several notches.

Dark Apostle Thirst - thanks very much. I know I'm not as skilled as many on here, but it's nice to hear such things.

Subtle Discord - ditto to you, sir! It's cool to see you come back and great to hear you think I'm improving, it definitely feels that way.

Sad news though, from sunday I will be working nights for at least a week and a half. I have no idea what that's going to be like, but it will potentially knock out my painting. I don't want to attempt stuff if I'm too tired/out of sorts only to have to redo it later. We'll see though, I'd like to keep making more or less weekly updates as I feel it's good for me to paint consistently and it sure helps relieve the stress of being a Christmas temp!

75% of the studs on his shoulder pad are now done and there's a base of green on the Plasma pistol. I've not done much with a plasma pistol before beyond a couple of layers of snot green so I might try out a test one before doing any more with it. Oh, and his krak grenade is done. At my current rate of progress with him he might be finished by the end of the next decade...

First pay slip came through this week and made the long hours worthwhile, set it to good use with some Army Painter brushes (including the awesome Insane Detail brush).

Also chopped up some bits to make some Crozius... (what's the plural? Croziuses/Crozii?). On reflection, the third one might need some more work.

After six soul-crushing days of night shifts my boss decided to give me a couple of days off, I spent yesterday sleeping and today, among a million other things that I needed time to get done, I finished some legs and started work on the Sergeant for the squad I'm going to start working on. He's a fair way away from being done but I was trying out some poses and couldn't decide which one I wanted.

To me pose #1 looks like he's singled out someone to kill and he's not even thinking about raising a weapon until he gets there. Pose #2 is very neutral, like he might just have finished killing something. Pose #3 is 'I'm going for a walk, try and stop me.'

So which one do you all think looks best? I'm leaning towards 1, but 3 obviously has appeal. 2 is just kind of there for another view.

I'm back! My run of back to back 12 hour shifts is up and I've had some time to sleep and recharge before starting normal night shifts again. There was also some time to paint, which I've not been able to do for a while. As a result the new squad has a sergeant and a few rookie members in various states of completion.

With regular shift lengths looming and a couple more days off in the near future I'd like to think I could get this squad fully assembled and more or less fully painted by the first week of 2012.

Anyway, I know this isn't the biggest update ever, but after the last few weeks I'm just glad to get anything done at all.

I noticed you had gore on some blades and it reminded me of a very good tutorial by Lonewolf that you might want to check HERE.

I'd second the earlier comment about being careful about mould lines, particularly across the tops of helmets and down the outside of thigh armour.

How about highlighting the black armour? That would really take your painting up a level.

Thank you very much, both for your praise and for the link. The gored blades are leftover parts from my previous space marines (started aged 12) and I've just been too lazy to paint over them! I've not made a decision yet about whether to gore blades, but should I elect to do so that tutorial looks incredibly useful.

I will get around to highlighting the armour, I bought some Vallejo Heavy Charcoal for that purpose, but for the moment I just want to get more marines done. Highlighting seems like something I can go back and do in batches.
