During the time you have played/been interested in 40K and more specifically Chaos, what is the one single defining moment for you that made you want to play Chaos Space Marines?

And

Why do you still play/collect?

Defining moment? Hum... tough call. Probably the epic conversions I saw on the Web and the really cool artwork that GW has produced for Chaos :D

As for why is still play/collect, I don't. Not yet anyway. But I will soon (I hope)!

The defining moment?

Reading the Word Bearer page in the 3,5 Chaos 'dex, specifically the parts about Dark Apostles.

I have always been drawn to the mystical / supernatural, and being deeply in love with poetic irony it was a match made in heaven so to say.

And even though that was some 10 years ago, it's still that very moment that still keep me going. Even though there has been a few bumps and turn along the road. :D

Uh, what made me collect? In 2nd ed Codex Imperialius or whatever it was called, the picture of the World Eaters fighting the dark angels, loved my boys in red ever since. I collect World Eaters(obviously) and have branched out with a handful of plague marines, Emperors children and a bunch of Iron warriors, but WE are my true love and I keep aquiring more and more ugly plastic berzerkers every year.

I was pretty young when I discovered 40K and the Warhammer world, both of which I came into via the background. A relative who knew my tastes very well (even then, I was into dark, dense, horrific and disturbing material) gave me second hand (and much dog eared) copies of the RoC books (I believe I was seven or eight at the time). I instantly fell in love with the distressing imagery, the incredibly "forbidden" ethos of the books (another thing I was into at the time was occultism; ghosts, magic, spirits; loved it all, and the RoC books are pervaded by the same atmosphere and imagery). I was sold on Chaos completely, as a philosophical notion, in terms of its constituent entities (Slaanesh and Nurgle were and remain my faves), then when the second ed chaos codex came out, I started to collect and paint and game a little. Back then, I was pretty much Nurgle exclusive in terms of my collecting (though I favoured Slaanesh in terms of ethos and background, I simply saw no way with the then current miniature range to respectfully or accurately portray the God's aspects in miniature form), concocting a fairly expansive Death Guard force accompanied by Nurgle daemons, led by my own Daemon Prince. More fun than anything in my mind has always been creating unique characters and mythologies through one's forces, and playing games that have more a role-playing, narrative element, rather than the competitive quality which I can get in far purer and more balanced form through chess.

3.0 I fell away from 40K pretty much completely; that was the first instance of my feeling somewhat short changed by GW; the codex was bad; badly written, badly edited; terrible ruleset. I didn't start paying attention again until the "band-aid" of the Index Astartes articles came about. Suddenly, we had situation where the Great Legions and their primarchs were fleshed out as never before, plus a means of representing them on the battlefield. Wonderful!

3.5 and the Eye of Terror era remains the high point of Chaos and the game in general for me; it was a period of high enthusiasm, passion and invention, which, admittedly, got out of hand from time to time.

4.0 was 3.0 to the Nth degree; Chaos stripped bare of its traditions, its resonance, its flavour and history. Haven't actively collected since it came out, barring the Horus Heresy books. Hoping that the up and coming Legions and Warbands codicies will represent another "peak" in what seems to be my tidal interest in the game and its mythos.

Someone challenged me to find a good reason for Chaos Marines to fight alongside my Tau.

So I thought of a warband that was allergic to the Warp, and found their presence not as disturbing. They originally started out as tiny slug aliens that filled the Marine armor with robotics and piloted like Star Control 3 K'tan, but then I returned to a more realistic concept, and had them Cursed by a Lesser Chaos God.

My defining moment that turned me to the Ruinous Powers would be getting Realm of Chaos: Slaves to darkness for my birthday when I was a kid. I became fascinated by the big four even going so far as to get a daemon weapon tattooed on my arm at seventeen (the sword was subsequently reprinted in liber chaotica too). Been obsessed with them since then.

Why do I still play chaos? Well *cough* my Word Bearers are kinda on sabbatical until we get a new dex as I'm thoroughly bored of the current one though they shall be reemerging triumphantly when we get it and my new UM force will probably get shelved for a while.

In all honesty, there wasn't a "defining moment" that brought me into full-time Chaos, it was process of elimination. When I started out, I was playing Imperial Guard exclusively, getting my backside kicked in regularly by Gaeus Marius's Dark Angels (he was the one who got me into the hobby). During our Iraq deployment in 2006, we shipped our armies over and continued playing, and managed to rope in two more guys in the Company. One picked Tau, the other picked Eldar and Necrons. Finding myself woefully out-teched and even outgunned in some instances, I turned to the one faction no one else wanted anything to do with for my salvation, and it came in the form of the 3.5 Chaos Codex and a really rapid eBay purchase. After a while of playing strictly Chaos with the occasional foray into Lost & Damned lists, I sold my IG army and devoted myself fully to the Warp, and have been there ever since.

I also think I'm here to stay, as I've tried dalliances with a DiY Loyalist army that didn't pan out after their Codex change, a Lamenters army for the BoLS Badab campaign whose paint job defeated me soundly by virtue of its amazing annoyance, and seriously using the SW Codex to represent World Eaters that after painting my first World Eaters (for the B&C Painting Challenge this year) simply refused to allow me to play them with a Loyalist Codex and have kept my feet on the Road of Damnation.

My first box was a gift. That was some Raptors. As I hate to waste money, I chose them. The one Legions that suits me the best were NL and AL.

Why am I still collecting ? When I build figurines, I'm dreaming like a little boy. That's why I still build some.

Good topic old friend.

Oh wow, well I remember dabbling in chaos when I first heard of the Black Legion in the Slaves to Darkness book. Back then they were pre- Abbadon and barely more than a black on black paint scheme and a chant about The Warmaster. It intrigued me though and definitely opened the gates.

The one defining moment though really has to be finding the IA article on the Nightlords. Between the startling "terror markings" on the pre-heresy marine, the battle cry to The Haunter himself, it grabbed my attention. The main reason being that at the time (and in many ways even now) they represented something never seen anywhere else.

You have to keep in mind - the Index Astartes articles were the first real bit of fluff to truly detail the Heresy. Up until then it was less a military conflict and more a fable; an in-game metaphor for the "fall of the rebel angels/war in heaven". Besides a short story detailing the battle between Horus and the Emperor there was very little details. Even with the IA articles this feeling was held somewhat. 40k was based in faith and war. The Imperium worships the Emperor. The Traitor Legions worship Chaos and/or Horus. The Eldar have Khaine, Vaul, Isha, etc. It goes on and on.

The Nightlords of that time were radically different. Different from what most fluff shows them as even now - as worshipping either chaos or the Haunter (reverence is close enough to faith). The Nightlords of the time were truely nihilistic. The defining difference between them and everyone else was an abhorrance of faith in any form. They cared about nothing except material gains. One could argue the Long War meant little to them - they just did what came naturally. They were bred to terrorize and kill.

This faithlessness in a universe built on faith fascinated me and was truely my defining moment. And though I may have finished my time as "Lord Knightmare", I'll always remember and cherish it.

Never revere it though. :cuss

A defining moment? Well, I read Storm of Iron...and re-read it...and re-read it...and re-read it...and re-read it...and re-read it... :cuss Insanity set in shortly afterwards.

As for why I still play and collect Chaos, it's pretty simple. The Bad Guys get to have more fun, game and story-wise.

For me, I can blame the first Dawn of War game for getting me into 40k. Saw that opening cutscene of space marines fighting off the orks and I was hooked. I started with loyalists (like so many) but the static nature of the squads with heavy weapons and the fact that bolt pistol/chainsword guys looked much better than bolter forced me to look elsewhere. I toyed with the black templar codex, and they're still one of my favorite loyalist chapters but I found my home in chaos.

What keeps me interested in them is the combination of the look and the underdog status. As for actually playing them, I've had to sell off my armies at various times due to the real world but there is always that pull to get back into it. Truth be told, if the new codex is good enough, I might have to bite the bullet and go on a spending spree.

For me it was reading "Honour Among Fiends" by Dylan Owen from Heroes of the Space Marines. I'd been dabbling in collecting Chaos for a while, but that hooked me right in. I now collect Word Bearers, and I can safely say I'm here to stay!

The old PC game Chaos Gate is what first got me hooked into 40k. As I learned more and more I slowly fell in love with chaos and it's children. I first played Thousand Sons because I loved the way they looked and that they were forced into chaos. I even got 3 chaotic tattoos. Then I joined the military (for those of you vets out there, I'm sorry if the next part offends you but it's just how it is for me). From that point onward my views on everything changed. My Tsons were across the country so I figured it'd be easier to start a new army. I chose Night Lords. At the time it was mostly because I'd liked the BL fiction featuring them. As time went on though, my own views on certain "things" started to shift to a real life version of how the eighth legion viewed the Imperium and it's Emperor. Now my views are almost completely identical to most Night Lords (as close as you can come without being a pyschopathic homical killer).

Hi all.

Well, as a young teenager i got the very first RoC book (was that 1988?). I loved the baroque armour of the chaos warriors, and collected most of the models, but i was allergic to mutation. Also, it seemed to me pretty funny that chaos worshippers wanted immortality. How boring. I was already into warhammer, so i kept collecting orcs...and then i started the "space orks" too.

Almost a decade later, when 2nd edition codex came out (96 i guess), i appreciate the less random and freakish quality now permeating chaos marines. They simply oozed coolness. Among the lot, i chose the most self serving (and less mutated) of the lot: the Night Lords.

In a way i was a pioneer, as i used to attach metal undead wight helmet wings to my NL commanders, thus making bunny eared models long before they were produced!!!

Enjoyed the IA articles no end, and kept on collecting NL for most of 3rd ed.

Read the books featuring Talos and his lot recently, and, i have to admit, liked them.

I'll soon start enlarging my NL army, but, for the moment, i'm working on a small loyalist Knights of Blood (one of the few loyalist army i can stand) force. A truescale one at that...

Defining moment? The general look of them. Spitefully looking warriors with horned and top-knotted helmets, with cool backpacks... It can't be described. They simply look great and cool and that's all :)

And why collect and buy? 'Cause of the defining moment. It's a hobby first, so for me the most important is to have such great models looking as i want :P and to paint them, of course. And in future, when my friends will also have their own armies, we'll play. And my warriors will rampage across the battlefield, destroying everything in their path, whether it'll be orks, necrons or tyranids :) 'cause it's Chaos. The rest doesn't matter.

I'm not sure I could pinpoint a single moment. In fact I'm not even sure how I went from looking at the boxes of 40k models with a self-conscious curiosity to deciding to buy that first codex and squad of basic troops, but I do remember that when I was looking at the different codices and starter models on the day I decided to take the plunge it came down to regular Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines, and I suppose I'm just a cranky rebel when you get right down to it. Reign in Hell rather than serve in Heaven, and the Chaos Space Marines on the cover of the codex looked to be rocking pretty hard compared to the centuries of crushing self denial and thankless servitude that being a Loyalist promises.

Ha. I haven't thought about this moment in years. I had bought a basic squad of Khorne Berzerkers, a Chaos Lord, etc... and was borrowing a few of my friend's models so I could play 1000 points. He deep strikes his terminators into the center of the field, and manage to lay waste to a squad of somethingorother. I then charge him with my Khorne Berzerkers, complete with the Khornate Chainaxes upgrade. Because they're all armed with powerfists, they attack at initiative 1 to my initiative 4. And, because they only have 4+ saves, I lay waste to the entire squad. Wonderful memory, that.

Was about a month when I started the hobby (15 years ago). I was on holiday in Aberdeen with my family, when we where going to get our train. Stop in WHsmith & I saw White Dwarf 202, was my first White Dwarf & was due to seeing the free models.

Saw John Blanch art work. He shown some of the Chaos Legions (Iron Warriors, Black Legion, Night Lord, Word Bearer, Alpha Legion) & it basicly talk about conversion & all idea you can use on Chaos Marines.

Then it shown people in the HQ, there converted models for there own Chaos Marine armies.

So I started with Black Legion. Then on the 17th Nov 2001, I started Iron Warriors due to the Index Astarties & my friend conversion on Obliterators.

In fact here photos I took from GT down in Warhammer World back in 2007 when they display Chaos Space Marines (Wade - Khorne Bezerker force, Christain Bryne - Black Legion, then some of the art work though out the years)

As to why I been a Chaos player for 15 year. It pure & simple, I like to convert. I like my armies to stand out, I do not like out of the box armies. Chaos Marines offer a lot to convert.

Black Legion, I went due to again art work from 2nd ed codex chaos, other than at it lost in the mist of time. While Iron Warriors, as said was due to the Index Astarties, the art work from that & a friend who made some really nice Obliterators conversion out plastic before we had the current once or when we where able to get 6 in a unit but each one had to fire a diffrent weapon per turn.

This Thur I'll been collecting Iron Warriors for ten years & will be starting a new army (6th IW army collected, move from Inks to the wash). I am really hype to start my brand new Mk6 Iron Warriors force, Games Workshop brought a lot of cool kits over the years there & as said my main strength in the hobby is converting, it what I enjoy.

I would like to collect other Legions, but right now I think I will wait until the new codex Chaos (rumour permitting) to be release to see what on offer.

Storm of iron and angels of darkness I loved the fact that the iron warriors used chaos and where not slaves to it. Angels of darkness because it showed the flip side of the dark angel's. I played fallen for a bit but never really got into the whole idea. Sons of malice chaos marine that fight both sides in the long war sounded cool but i can't paint there scheme worth a damn so I think i'll give the IW a go this time.

The moment that I decided to play Chaos Space Marines was when the 3.5 dex came out and I was talking to my friends about it and I loved the customization with that, I built a 2000 point army of Black Legion and played with it for a little bit but ended up selling it. I then was re-reading the codex and the Word Bearer's description just caught me by the hook, I've been a fan of them ever since.
