Iron Warriors 5th Grand Company re-born - Army log

Recommended Posts

Small update on the Bike.

Just spent today getting the unit of Biker base & they'll be ready first thing tomorrow for undercaoting. While getting the unit ready, kept thinking for there theme useing Game of Thrones - Locke & his unit of hunter that we see in the TV show (part of Bolten army). Just I really enjoy the Game of Thrones TV show & use parts of this in the past for idea toward conversion - my Space Wolves has one of the models theme on the Mountain. While for my Iron Warriors I have a Champion - Bronn Tal.

Still working out what name to give to my unit of Biker. Need to try get around & writen down all the units I current have in my Iron Warriors force along with name for the units & there Champion :D

Aim to get the metal paint all done tomorrow as there taken part in a 2000pt game on Thursday & I hate useing unpainted models if I can help it.

Champion Azog Vannuk - Useing the Nid trophie which Dave give me during Throne of Skulls March, base on his brillaint Nid army which won overall best army award. You can see more of Dave army here as well as a great write up on Throne of Skulls March

http://40kaddict.blogspot.co.uk/

I also use the spare FW Khârn head, as said in the last post I like to have my units have a sub theme to help with there history & find this is a good way to make the model stand out as the Champion of the unit.

I've found the Ravenwing knight bike to be really great to convert for the Iron Warriors biker but a lot of work to remove the Dark Angels icons. I went with these due to the way they look overall & how much I can paint on the Bikes as seen with the first model posted up a while back.

Sweet rides there man, our Champions look like they could be cousins lol

Brothers from another Primarch

Sorry about that Brother Heinrich, never notice until I saw the link there hope you don't mind?.  I knew from seen your Bike unit, the Ravenwing bike just suit the look compaire to the Chaos Biker kit.  I've always found the chain-glave to be great weapon to convert up & great seen Forge World are adding the weapon to there Heresy range :biggrin.:

On that note - Have you pick up the new Forge World Night Lord terror squad helmet?  There really great kit & I'm currently thinking useing them for a Nurgle IW squad which will rep the Heresy era Destroyer Units, still working out idea for the unit right now.

IP - very nice conversions as always, man. I've lurked on forums long enough (in addition to the WD articles) to have seen various versions/updates of this IW force. I'm consistenly impressed by how you've kept the whole army fresh, and consistently improved in all the aspects of the painting/conversion. Bravo, sir.

The bikes are spot on - good use of the Ravenwing bits to update and replace the now, very dated, chaos bikes.

No worries man, great minds think alike :) The Ravenwing bikes make a solid base for chaos bikers (with a little bit of scraping). I haven't picked up the Terror squad helmets though, call me old school but I prefer to paint on my terror markings and all that. They are a fine bit of sculpting though for sure.

Update

I've just spent today & Wed getting the new Iron Warriors Biker unit painted up, led by Azog Vannuk.  I did have a name sorted out for the unit only to forget it a few moment ago, it worth getting a note book kept to one side for the hobby to note done names for units, painting you use for a unit & just general stuff for the hobby.

The photos where just taken after adding a third layer of Forge World weather powder & waiting on the MIG pigmint fixer to dry.  So there might be another layer of weather powder that need to be added but I have to wait until tomorrow & see.

Dave trophie base on his Nid army from Throne of Skulls March.  Tie in really well & was really cool of Dave painting up the spare Genestealer head for my Iron Warriors.

I just need to get ride of the weather powder that spill onto the base & other parts of the biker models.  Like wise I'm going to go back & sort out some of the blood effect.

They took part in the 1999pts game on Thursday.  It wwas a really hard fought game & nether me or my friend knew who won until the end of the game & those watching commented it was hard to keep track + with very little left with ether of our armies.

However the Biker suffer the curse of new units + first game, which saw them wipe out on turn 2 :(  However they did allow two of my Iron Warriors squads time to counter attack against a Thunder Hammer terminator squad led by there Chapter Master.

I've been given one of the Honour Guard helmet from the FW Red Scorpian kit that has the Librarian model, as a trophie to add onto a new Iron Warrior.  A few people over the past few months have ask when they will see trophies base on there armies on my Iron Warriors army.

Also on another note - Forgot to add this

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08007_zps94734eba.jpg

Less than a week until I get the Third FW Heresy book.  Right now I'm thinking about converting up a squad of Heresy era Destroyer Units into current Chaos Space Marine era.
Just I'm working out a list for Throne of Skulls event later this year which will see a brand new Warpsmith model converted up & working on some idea to try make a Dreadnought stand out a little bit more.
Bit gutted that my green stuff skill lack as I'd not mind trying to get some cool battle scene sculpted like Malcharion from the Night Lords novels by Aaron

Thanks for the comment

Seem my other photobucket account is down :sad.:  So have to wait a few weeks for that bandwigth to be sorted, also saw yesterday that they've stop allow multi accounts now.  I'll get around to getting a folder sorted on these fourms

Dude you are the embodiment of 40k iron warriors.

When will you join us in the heresy forum

I do look that the Heresy fourm from time to time as I enjoy the background :biggrin.:  Just to see any topics on current/future novels or right now the third FW Heresy book.  Already looking forward to the third books from Forge World which I should be getting during this week.  Like wise I am really looking forward to getting the new Black Library novel that is release next weekend :biggrin.:  Really can not wait to get my copy of the third Forge World Heresy novel.  All my friends know as soon as my Primarch is release, everthing else is being put to one side until he been built & painted.

If you mean a army.  I do have a small Heresy era army that was done as part of a hobby challenge & there a second part of the challenge that need to be done during May.  But it not somthing I will add to right away/each months/week, part this is due to lot of time toward my Chaos era Iron Warriors & to try get some other armies like Ravenwing, Iron Hands (still to make a army list) & Chaos Guards on the go & down to time, also possible a World Eater army which will use a mix of the FW Khorne armour & Heresy armour as I like the corrupted Heresy look to my Chaos Marines :biggrin.:
I will buy Heresy era specil unit for Iron Warriors to convert into Chaos era unit - like right now wanting to convert the Destroyer units into a current Chaos era :biggrin.:

Models for the hobby challenge - 2x 10 Marines squads & 1x 5 Terminator squad

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/IW1003941_671578916197585_8890971_n_zpsef7564e0.jpg

Jasp, please stop asking everyone to join 30k.

Awesome bikers, Psychopath. Truly a brother of Chaos to be admired.

Thanks.  Been collecting Chaos Space Marines since starting the hobby.  Second army after I saw John Blanche art work in WD 202, I think I posted art work on one of my updates :biggrin.:

A fitting mug! Lovely job on those Bikers. I really like how caked on the mud is, and those Chainswords seem to be the best bits of the newer chaos kits.

-Tarvik

I loss count of how many Raptor boxies I pick up & how I ended up adding a unit of Raptors because the new plastic kit is brillaint, as said during there update I was never keen on the metal once release in the past.  The chainsword are great & with units like the Breacher & Biker though it fitted in really well with all the extra blades attach to the chainsword & how those units would fight in close combat.

I spent today getting the second unit of Veterans ready for my Chaos Guard force

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08025_zpsdd7e53e9.jpg

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08026_zps90c6043b.jpg

I will be going tank heavy with this army, with three squad of Veterans, fair few Leman Russ led by a Tank Commander to get my army to 1500pts, like my Iron Warriors keep adding diffrent units for models I like & give me more chose when it come to gaming both as a stand alone army & ally for my Iron Warriors.

I also got the Metal Chaos Dreadnought finish after my last update

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08011_zps93f99e58.jpg

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08030_zpsbf8f83c9.jpg

As said in past update - I had the Metal Chaos Dreadnought in my Iron Warriors army since I started them back in 2001.  After that time he was paint strip & waiting to be re-painted though out those years.
It was only Nov 2012 when I was search though the garage & sort out some stuff before moving house that I found the Dreadnought hidden in one of the boxies along with Predators, Land Raider & Ravenwing battle force.

It been great getting the Dreadnought painted & add to my Iron Warriors collection.

As said there I was that a local wargaming show/event yesterday & mange to pick up few things

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08028_zps46f81647.jpg

- Necromunda Pit Slaves:  Going to use some of the bionic part to help convert some of the plastic storm trooper for my Chaos Guards.

- Iron Hands spure:  Friend had given me these bitz, part of this was to help toward my Iron Hands army & other part to use Bionic bitz on future Iron Warriors models.

- 2 Chaplains:  It just a great model & as seen in this topic I've use the box game Chaplain in many conversion from Dark Apostle to trophies.

Then not in the photos - Necron spure my friends give me, just mean I got new trophies.  Heldrake - I'll be make this into a Autocannon version so I got the chose.

I also got to talk to my friend that we both been mean to get a 7000pt+ game on the go since last year.  Hopeful this will go forward on the 7th June, next month as my wargaming club holding a Saturday season to mark ten year that the Stirling wargaming club been around.  It will be Tau & Dark Angels against my Iron Warriors with Cypher & a unit of Fallen Angels if this all goes to plan.  Just think it be great to see how the whole Iron Warrior army current look & be able to use everthing in game.

Also during the week this arrive from Forge World :biggrin.:

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08027_zpsea71505f.jpg

I still need to get time to properly read though the Heresy book.  But from what I've read so far & seen the art work on the Iron Warriors.  It been brilliant & also give me a lot of idea for future models & conversion.

Also yesterday saw the White Dwarf annouce that there going to be a update on Warhammer 40,000.  One of the part I'm looking forward to is Unbound army list.  While we don't know 100% what going to happen until the rule book release in a few week time.  I would not mind getting around to collecting the Terminators force I spoke about last year.  I've already made up a quick 1500pts army list & with unbound give me that army list I want for this force.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Iron%20Warriors/chaosterminator_zps83717ad5.png

Just this art work always been a big part along with John Blanche art work fro WD 202 & Bloodquest novel.  Reason why I want to get the terminator force, also from reading the Forge World Heresy book where one of the Iron Warriors specil ch allow Terminator to become troop & like wise Forrix company from Storm of Iron.

Right now I'll be working on the Chaos Guard army & getting them to 1500pts.

A nice up-date.Your guard looks great as does the Old one.

Thanks.  I'm aim on useing the classic metal Chaos Dreadnought along with my Forge World Iron Warriors dreadnought this Thursday in a 2000pt game & a send off to 6th ed of Warhammer 40,000 before a new era start with 7th ed.

I've been really impress when I've use the FW Iron Warriors Dreadnought in games recently - slaughter a unit of Mega Armour Orks after win combat & over running, slaughter them all.  Caught up to Tau specil ch in the stelth suit & her unit of Stelth suit thank to a single glance hit & rolling the result for close combat.  Then Thursday just there, help out a lot in what has been one of my most difficult games tactical wise - Was just him & a Obliterators left in Big Guns never tire vs Ork Warboss & a few Ork Biker by turn 7/end of the game.

Let see how the classic Dreadnought can do.  If I rememeber rightly my first game with the Iron Warriors back in 2001, he wipe out one of my own unit of Iron Warriors.

Update

I've been spend time getting the second squad of Guard Veterans (useing Storm Trooper models) painted.  I just need to add some blood effect here & there & also the paint the cable on the Melta guns & that should be them ready.

Photos take that the painting stastion due to work being done in the house

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08035_zpsa27fa9f5.jpg

First squad, I just finish painting the second melta arm Veteran for the unit along with the last few memebers for the second unit.

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08036_zps38eaba64.jpg

Both units

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08037_zps348c550b.jpg

Leman Russ

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08038_zpsd9d71839.jpg

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08039_zpsf096380b.jpg

I shown this Leman Russ a while back which was painted back 2012.  But recently I been getting the detail finish & adding the Forge World weather powder.  I'll need to try get the weather powder a bit darker & add Typhus Corrosion to help break up area of the tanks a bit more.  To show they've been in the trench & general Iron Warriors warfare.

I've also pick up Sentinal for my Chaos Guard army which should be getting built next weekend if I don't get time tomorrow.  Pretty much just need a few more Leman Russ & I'll add Iron Warriors ally to get a few games in with the Guard codex.  Right now I want to get my Chaos Guard army to 1500pts, then add on from there, like my Iron Warriors just to help give me chose when it come to gaming & if I want to add ally to the Iron Warriors.

Also been looking onto what to add to the Iron Warriors.  As said last update, I am looking to add more Terminators as 7th ed allow us Unbound armies & I'm looking to get some Daemonic tanks, like GuitaRasmus has done over on his brillaint army log with brillaint conversion work :biggrin.:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/275772-dark-mechanicus-project-something-binary-this-way-comes/

I'm also going to look into converting a Chaos Lord in Power Armour.  Just from recent re-reading the Bloodquest Comic with a lot of the Chaos Marines art work & just to have that chose - mainly for smaller games, also aim for the conversion to be my Legand painting comp entry for future Throne of Skulls events I attend as they hold a legand painting comp on Saturday launch time for single models, mosnter & tanks.

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08040_zps41ec9520.jpg

It'll also allow me to theme him on another old Champion in Warsmith Abhorred Riddick unit of Chosen Bodyguards along with Narach Delau.

I found the Champion model recently while still unpacking boxies since moving house last year.

Also after reading the third Heresy book by Forge World, it given me a few idea.  One of them is to try convert up the Elite heavy support Havoc unit that Iron Warriors get, know as the best markmen in the Legion join this unit.

Want them to be sort of like this Space Marine concept drawing shown back years ago when 4th ed era Space Marine codex was due for release & few concept drawing like this one where shown on Warseer.

http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/Insane-Psychopath/Iron%20Warriors/62813492.jpg

Just this drawing played a big part in term of idea toward my Iron Warriors.  I'll be aim to have this unit to be arm with Heavy Bolter, just like the Heresy era elite havoc units.

I mange to get some time on Sunday start up on my version of the Iron Havocs from the Heresy book Extermination, but for the current Chaos era.  Also inspired by the concept art work on the Space Marines devastators back 2004 that was posted on warseer?
Spent yesterday painting up the first memeber for my new Havoc squad

I'm not going to add the servo skull, I think it would be a bit to fragile for carry the model to game from game.  But I'll keep it aside for one of the other memebers of the units.

Just added some more Battle Brother toward - Iron Havoc squad - Olympia Vengeance

Just getting both models ready for painting on Wednsday.  The battle brother on the left will be the Apothercary theme model for the unit, while the model to the right useing the auspex to scan for near by units after already clear out a building/trench.  While the base came from a badly broken model & why that all finish with turft grass.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee412/JFmodel/Iron%20Warriors/DSC08074_zps9cd9385d.jpg

I'm hope to get the other Iron Havoc w/Autocannon built during the weekend.  While for the Champion I'm still working out some conversion idea, part this is to use bionic bits from the Iron Hands set from Games Workshop mail order.

Also my Iron Warriors saw there finisl 6th ed game last Thursday.  Great game but got to be one of the most gutting moment for me.  Lord Narach - Chaos lord with Terminators armour, was in close combat with a Writhknight for three round.  Round 1 saw the Knight fail to cause a single wound, while it already loss two wound thank to the Daemonic Axe.  Round 2, Narach past both his Inv save.  By this stage the Writhknight is down to two wounds.

Round 3, I rolled to see how many attack the Daemonic Axe would allow me, it was going to land on a 5, meaning 8 attack in close combat.  But ended up landing funny on a bit of terrain.  So re-rolled the dice, only to get a 1! mean I loss a wound & I'm Ws1 in combat, all went down hill from there.

In the end all you could do is laught & how the Chaos Gods can be fickle.  Still a great game & a great way to see end of a ed of the rules & ready for new 7th ed.  It remind me of Angels Exterminatius, the Iron Warriors Heresy novel by Black Library which see the IV & III Legion battle Eldar writh army.

I've already had my first game of 7th ed & really enjoy all the new rules & look forward to more games.  I'd like to try out the new mission as well that have been added.

I just need to get time & write up a new army list for my Iron Warriors for Throne of Skulls later this year.  Not really sure what I want to take.  But so in my games I been really impress useing my Forge World IW Dreadnought & now he get Hammer of Wrath!!

Apothercary memeber since I've been adding them to my other units, inspired by the Night Lord Novels by Aaron with Talos.

Champion for the unit.  Went for the Power Fist because I've not painted a PF in a while & there cool, no other reason.  I'll also be converting up another memeber for the unit with Chainsword & Bolt Pistol to swap over depend the game & points.

I should be useing this unit in there first game next week.

Also the bitz arrive today for the last Autocannon memeber for the unit.  So he should be getting built during the day & painted during the weekend, also get the three new memeber of the Iron Havoc squad tidy up & ready for the game next week - 2000pts.

Just fought the new Malestorm mission today in my second game of 7th ed.  Really impress with the new set of mission, ended in a draw 7v7pts, was really hard call both in points & when you'd seen the models left on the gaming table with both my IW & my Tau oppent taken heavy loss.  Just the mission card kept you on your feet, that way you had a lot of hard chose which made the game fun.

Great work mate, very inspiring.

This is probably my all time favourite army thread. Which is a big call for me.

I was wondering about your bases. Earlier in the thread we could see the bare bases in W.I.P shots, and these have been very helpful to me. I was wondering if there was some kind of method you follow when building them?

Also what are the bits of building/rubble you are using?

Do you plan the base around the pose?

Any tips or advice you could share would be great, as I haven't do e any serious basing before.

Cheers!

Outstanding. I think I've seen this thread before, Emperor only knows why I didn't follow it back then... Definitely subbed now.

The Champion of the Havocs is everything an Iron Warrior should be in one model. Congrats, you've nailed it.

For the base - I've use bits from the old 40k 3rd ed Ruin that came with the box game & later sold seprate.  There no longer on sale & I see them now & then on ebay.  But I'm slow adding in parts from the current building Games Workshop sell which are on the - Forge Fiend w/Autocannons, Warpsmith Dreadnought, Biker unit & the first memeber of the Iron Havoc unit.

Then it just plastic rods & H beam which I get from local model store - Right now that wounderland in Edinbrugh, where I also get the MIG pigmint fixer for seal Forge World weather power.

It worth checking local model & art store just to see what they have.  It also where I get the clear plastic rod's for the Servo skulls.  There plasticard sheet with brick detail & wire mesh sort of effect.

If you don't have a local model store near by, then there 4d Models (UK Londo)
http://modelshop.co.uk/

Just this is one of the place my NQ-HND model making college course bought material from.

Then green stuff to give it that high & blend everthing in, you could use filler or miliput?.  I use off cut from spure just help the model out a bit.

I build the base first & then add model/pose, then the plastic tube/H beams, then green stuff.  Once that done just base the models with sand, usely do that near end of the day & let the pva glue dry during the night so the models are ready to undercaot the following day.

Only time it been models first where the Fallen Angels as I wanted to paint them right away & was still gather parts for the base, also the main body part all one bit really so don't need to worry about pose other than the head or arm's.

I think the base as just as important as the overall model them selfs.  It can make or break a army.  You could have a Golden Daemon winning painted model but it could have a plain old green base that all us Veteran hobbiest will rememeber from year & years ago :biggrin.:

Also I find the base help add to the story & theme of the models, that just my view.

A lot of us around here/local gaming commuinty have been getting base done up.  One my friends Son's of Horus have there base theme around the planet in the first Heresy novel with it being all swampy useing that nurgle paint Games Workshop release last year & zombies, useing foam & treen parts from the GW tree kit.  I've got a photo of the model on my mobile & see if I can get this posted here.  Still getting use to my new mobile phone.
While a friend with Warhammer Daemons have them over running a Tomb King army & has portal/warp rift.  Then another friend got a Nid army useing foam, some planet material & bit of tree from the GW range & how the Nids are slow destroying the planet.

Best thing to do is research.  From history, movie/TV show (Band of Brother, Game of Thrones, etc...), Computer games & just look around the fourms for idea & how you want the base to be.  My Ravenwing use bit of Necrons on the base - from the short story where Cypher battle a Necron c'tan & vanish in a few min of the battle along with the Necron Warriors & Fallen Angels that are there, so want my Ravenwing search this Necron planet.

Also if people are useing turft grass, it best useing super glue & then useing matt varnish, give it sort of a static electricity when both super glue & matt varnish is drying.

Edit:  I've got photos of the fourth Battle Brother arm with Autocannon which I'll post up later today, since when I'm on B&C, my PC does not allow me to copy & paste onto these fourm.  As he was just built a few moment ago & photos taken just because sadn was added to the base.

Cheers mate very helpful indeed.

I actually have those pieces left from the 2nd edition box I owned when I was 9! The only bits I have left sadly.

Thanks again for the advice, I realise it's largely just common sense, but I like to get advice before starting something new

It always great to ask.  There been a lot of great people I know in the almost 18 year I been in the Games Workshop hobby who help me though out those years that gotten me where I am today with the GW Hobby.

Here the fourth Autocannon arm - Battle brother for the Havoc unit.  Just taken the photo before adding sand to the base.  Once I can work my new mobile phone try get the photo of my friend Son's of Horus models.

Update

I spent today getting the last Autocannon arm Battle Brother painted for Iron Havoc squad: Olympia Vengeance, after getting the model converted yesterday

I like the art work seen in the Heresy Book Three – Extermination, which shown a Iron Warriors carry a Autocannon on the army list page for the Iron Warriors.  Since starting the new unit of Havocs, I wanted to try included a model roughly base on him.

Next - I'm going to add a standard Iron Warrior to this unit.  Just so I can swap him to be a Champion if I don't have the pts & just it always great to add some new models.  I added a Power Fist Champion to the unit more because it look cool more than anything else.

I'm also going thinking of adding a Rhino transport for this unit.  Just I've really enjoy converting & painting the new unit of Havocs & possible thinking of taken them down to the Throne of Skulls event later this year.  I just need to work out my army list, which I also want to included a Warpsmith & a Helbrute as I've really enjoy useing my FW IW Dreadnought in games & found him to always be brillaint.

So want to add a Rhino & point permitting, possible get a Havoc launcher like the Rhino conversion I done back for the Rapid Fire event in October by my local wargaming club.

The Iron Havocs - Squad: Olympia Vengeance, will have there first game on Thursday against my friends Orks that 2000pts.  Which will included my standard 1500pts Throne of Skulls list, FW IW Helbrute, I think I've added my Biker in this list & then the Iron Havocs who will be borrow the Havoc Launcher Rhino until I get around to convert there own transport.

I've also pick up another Land Raider today.  I've always like the model & rememeber when the current Land Raider model was release, just it been a great model to build & paint no matter which power armour army I've collected.
Part of this is, I want to try make it Lord Narach - second in command of my Grand Company, personal transport.  Just need time to plan this out & just try get some idea to make the model stand out.
