Who is your favourite Chaos Primarch and why?

i.e. contrary to what you guys might think, my favourite Primarch is not Konrad but Horus.

From the aesthetics of his armour (the RT Era illustration) to his accomplishments, background and eventual downfall. I find him absolutely fascinating.

Also,

Have you ever made (or wanted to make) a model of said Primarch?

Feel free to post pictures if you have.

My favourite must be Magnus the Red.

In many ways to me he is the most human of all the primarchs despite the way he looks.

In the end he faces a terrible choice and as it turns out he is damned what ever he does.

It seems like he gets betrayed by just about everyone he comes into contact with.

Tricky one this. I identify with a number of the primarchs, especially in recent years, given the elaboration of character they've been granted in the HH books. Philosophically and aesthetically, I'd have to say Fulgrim wins out over the others; his original appreciation of art, culture and creative expression, not to mention the value he placed on aesthetics and beauty mark him out amongst the primarchs as one who could have potentially had some genuine service to provide mankind after all the fighting was done. In point of fact, he'd likely have made a good surrogate Emperor, given his appreciation of society and culture. Following his fall to Slaanesh, I like the daemonic form his body is twisted into, and also the duality of his being; the fact that part of him is still the same cultured and urbane figure, trapped, twisted and tormented in the Hell of his own transmuted body. Poor Fulgrim.

However, I also find myself (against all expectation) liking Lorgar a great deal following the events of The First Heretic. Ideologically, I despise extremism in all its forms; I particularly despise ideologies that seek to establish and impose some universal standard of"truth" to all and sundry, which is precisely what Lorgar and his legion have traditionally been about. However, The First Heretic reveals a figure of remarkable complexity and nuance; not some frothing fundamentalist, but a cultured, considered philosopher, genuinely seeking after some truth by which humanity might define its existence. The fact that his fall from grace is far more considered and less neurotic than it has been traditionally portrayed makes him all the more identifiable.

Magnus the Red: Again, a student of culture and philosophy; one of the primarchs who has more to his character than: "Kill, kill, kill; war, war, war." Again, one who would probably have been of great service to the Imperium following the Great Crusade not only a cultural level, but in terms of advancing humanity's general state; urging and directing its psychic, maybe even physical evolution, to a condition beyond anything known to the 30K/40K universe. I appreciate Magnus's breadth and depth of consideration; his seeking after knowledge above all other concerns. Even given his remarkable arrogance -that eventually leads to his fall from grace-, I think he above all the other primarchs has the most viable outlook; not to exclusively conquer and control, but to learn, to advance, to evolve. The fact that the Emperor didn't take full advantage of this boy's potential whilst he had the chance is perhapsd the most damning indictment of the man I've come across in the established lore.

It's difficult to say which I identify with more closely; they all seem to reflect aspects of my own character, as they do most people's. On balance, I'd have to say Fulgrim is my favourite, simply because he seems to have all the best of the other two, along with his own refinement, aesthetic considerations, cultural refinement etc.

I like Magnus... his tale is a tragic one and he isn't a primarch who swore himself to Horus on a whim or even embraced Chaos willingly. Many people say he was arrogant but I disagree! I think the Emperor was arrogant and Magnus was naive. In fact Magnus for all his intelligence and power is very much like a child.

This is actually really difficult for me. Part of the reason being that many of the primarchs haven't been fleshed out in the HH series yet and so often I find my views on them changing after reading these portrayals.

Perturabo is a possibility but I've seen so little of him in the background. I do love the line (can't remember where I saw it) of him being able to go head to head with a high magos in terms of technical ingenuity.

In the end, I think I'd have to say Lorgar for being the first to be corrupted/embrace Chaos (depending on your view).

Haunter obviously.

In him we see a fraction of ourselves that we don't want to admit is there - Whether it be a taste for oblivion or what horrors we are capable of in the darkest days. Like Colonel Kurtz on who he is based we have a right to act, as he has ultimately acted, but no right to judge him or his actions.

As for the model thing... ehh. I think how the Haunter looks is a deeply personal thing, like fear. You can't put a face on it.

I'd like to say Perturabo, but he's not defined well enough in the fluff really for me to say one way or the other. Good love the bitter, angry one.

I;d say if I had to chose now, I'd say Magnus. Poor bastard, had to make tough decisions on numerous occasions, and every time he was loyal in why he did what he did, though not necessarily the action taken.

Horus. He is the only one who deserved to be a Warmaster, and the only one whose presence can make you stand in awe. Haunter was the one who did everything right, who saw the world as it was, but he was no God and no leader. Horus was.

And as for me - no single model can ever reflect any Primarch. Your imagination will always portrait them far superior from any miniature.

Ooh, this one's a toss-up. I'd either have to go with Lorgar Aurelian or Perturabo...

Lorgar for a couple of reasons. First, because he was the one that brought Chaos to humanity in the first place, and essentially ignited the entire Horus Heresy.

However, I also love the bitter-sweet irony that in doing so, he was only (originally) looking out for the best interests of humanity...and actually thought Chaos was the right path.

Perturabo, because he's a bad@ss. The decision to put his entire home planet to the sword (bullet)? Just...wow. I agree with minigun762 that there isn't much on him to go on in the background, but I've always loved the determination of the IW. The fact they are masters in siege warfare is just a bonus.

Perturabo, because I can appreciate his cold, mathmatical approach to war; his love of siege and trench warfare (I've always loved studying WWI history, lol); His appreciation of massed artillery fire, and Titans; and the way he ended the rebellion on his own planet...Damn. The Haunter just burned his planet from a distance. Perturabo and his entire Legion bathed themselves in the blood of their own people for their foolishness. Plus, Perturabo shattered the Imperial Fists during the Iron Cage. You have to love that, heh heh heh.

It's gotta be Lorgar. He's such an interesting and tragic character (though Magnus and Fulgrim also vie for the Most Tragic Primarch Award). I have no religious belief in real life yet I know many people who are devout within their faith and I always feel slightly jealous that they have something in their lives that I'll never have, regardless of the fact that I couldn't/wouldn't be able to accept it for myself.

I think this has a lot to do with my fascination with Lorgar as he desperately needs to believe in a 'higher power' and when the Emperor rebukes him, he goes off and vindicates his stance of religiosity. Albeit from a pretty skewed view point.

So yeah......Lorgar

I think one of the things that makes Lorgar so interesting in his more recent incarnations is that he has sidestepped the stereotype; he is not some frothing demagogue or intolerant bigot; like Magnus, he is a genuine metaphysician, but whereas Magnus approaches the search for truth from a skeptical standpoint; assessing, rationalising, controlling, Lorgar is more poetic; akin to romantics such as Blake or Byron, who broke away from the impositions of church and priestly authority to explore their own peculiar metaphysics. There's also the nasty suggestion that he may be right, in his own skewed way; if there are entities in the 40K universe that warrant worship as Gods, will appreciate it and demonstrate their generosity, it's the Four Great Powers.

Have to agree to this 100%! Now if they'd finally release some more personal information on him in the Horus heresy series...

I couldn't agree more, this has been my interpretation of Lorgar for some time with my opinion ratified by Mr Dembski-Bowden in The First Heretic.

Fluff writers at GW must also feel the same way, as Lorgar has the moniker 'The Urizen', quite clearly taken from William Blakes Book of Urizen. Though given the content of the story I'm very surprised that it's only Russ in 1k sons that disapproves of the nickname.

Hi all,

well, i know he barely qualifies as a chaos primarch, but it's Curze.

I like his ghoulish looks, love that he is not bald (!!!!), and that he is a nihilistic, self destructive bastard.

I also like the fact he scorns all forms of faith and, unlike the weak and fearful herd of chaos, des not really pursue immortaity.

The only other i can (barely) tolerate is perturabo. True,he is now a freakish demon prince (though i imagine him more like a giant dreadnought than a winged minotaur), but i like his methodical approach to warfare. I also like the concept of cyborg, so his legion is one of my favoued.

The other vary from "meh" to "utter crap".

-Horus is terrible: Lex Luthor on steroids. His only dream is killing superman/the emperor, because he is so much better than him. He has a magalomaniac ego, is weak, vain and arrogant, and his fall to chaos is simply patethic. No no, this one is just crap. Oh, and he is bald on top of that...

-Alpharius we dont know much about, i'll suspend judjement on this one, for now.

-Angron is boring, an hyperactive scallywag with problems. Also, now, he is an ugly demon prince. Meh.

-Mortarion started off pretty well: he was raised in a planet ruled by undeadish overlords (way cool!), and had his death guard wear bone coloured plate, not bad. Then he became corrupted by nurgle, and his legion started to dvelope swollen bellies and pus boils. nd, again, he became an ugly demon prince. No no, not my cup of tea.

-Magnus...well, you may sometimes feel sympathy for old one eye, after all he was rather faultless. I also appreciate that, from the HH art, as an ugly demon he is the last changed of the primarchs (basically he has wings, and that's it). This is quite remarkable for a servant of the lord of change. However, his legion is broken, and he seems to be too obsessed with peering into the futre/unknown to be really interesting. Not the worst of the lot, but still kind of meh.

-Lorgar i never liked, not even one bit. A demonic fanatic who thinks religion is the ultimate salvation of mankind. Oh, c'mon.

-Fulgrim is, perhaps, the worst. Well no, horus is worse, but he comes second (saved only by non being bald). We can, however, pity him a bit: he ended up being a four armed snake, that's bad enough per se. When reading the novel, i really found him a disgustngly puny and despicable figure, sad and bitter for no particular reason. His marines were no better, a group of deluded fools with bad taste for clothing\amour. Kind of rocky horror picture show freaks in lipsticks and leather. Just 8 feet tall and clad in armour.

Bleach.

Must ....contain....rage...against...clearly a loyalist.....fanboi........

ok.......to start

Right here....this is where you lost any credibility.....regardless of the rest this was point one. Lex Luthor on steroids? No...just no. Horus was the greatest Primarch.....hands down (caveat this topic requested favourites not 'the best')

To call out Horus as 'terrible' or pathetic' is the denouncement by one that hasn't understood the Horus exposition so far............Fin.....nothing more to say.

-Angron is boring, an hyperactive scallywag with problems. Also, now, he is an ugly demon prince. Meh.

You know....I'm not even gonna write any criticism against this statement. To call out the most active Chaos Primarch as 'boring' or as one of those 'hyperactive scallywags' screams ignorance regarding ALL GW fluff regarding Chaos activity in it's very limited progress of plot...........jeez....the most active Chaos Primarch is 'boring' huh?!?!??!?!

-Magnus...well, you may sometimes feel sympathy for old one eye, after all he was rather faultless. I also appreciate that, from the HH art, as an ugly demon he is the last changed of the primarchs (basically he has wings, and that's it). This was the final nail in the coffin of 'this guy doesn't have a clue'....Magnus isn't interesting?? I guess that's just subjective between people that like depth to character and people that like dakka dakka pewpew I smash RAAAAAAAWWWW!!!! Can I recommend a Mr C.S. Goto as an author you should invest in. I think you'll be very satisfied........do you like multi-lasers? :o

-Lorgar i never liked, not even one bit. A demonic fanatic who thinks religion is the ultimate salvation of mankind. Oh, c'mon.

Even as a Word Bearer fanboi......it wasn't even this ill informed opinion that irritated me the most. I once had a PM conversation with Legatus regarding his capacity to ignore idiots posting stuff......unfortunatley he's a better guy than I am.....i've bitten on this bait and ranted........

GRRRAWWW you make me butt hurt and angry
