Well the razorback is 99.9% done just need to touch up a few spots. Finally took everyone's advice and started playing with washes. I picked badab black and washed the skulls, wings, and inside of the turret. Still working on washing the body of the tank. Pics coming soon.

Well the Razorback is complete. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Decals properly placed. A little bit of wash used on areas of the tank.

Large decals from Forge World (needed a little trimming to fit on the circular doors)

I'm particularly happy with this work. As anyone who has owned a 2nd edition Razorback knows the gunner doesn't have a Adeptus Mechanicus shoulder pad. I'm not sure on the correct insignia normally reserved for tank crew (I've read a lot of threads debating their affiliation) I decided I wasn't a fan of tank crew sticking out like a big red "shoot me" target on the top of a rhino so they all wear the blue armor. I free handed the sprocket (the skull is a decal). It was actually a lot easier then I thought it would be.

Starting playing with washes. The pic below illustrates what I've gotten done so far. I really like the way it turned out. The Marine in the middle is prewash and the two on either side have been washed. Very impressed with the ease of use.

Finished up the Sgt. for the all cyclone terminator squad. I also figured out the squad numbering I'm gonna use for the the 1st Company. 1-5 will all be ranged weapons, 6-10 will be close combat. The robed veteran is going to be a member of 1st Company 1st Squad, made up of ten robed veterans. The 6th Squad will be robed veterans equipped with jump packs. Here is the Sgt. with his two completed squad members. The one on the right is still awaiting a wash.

  • 2 weeks later...
A present came from the UPS guy today. The IWATA Eclipse HP-CS with Smart Jet compressor. I quickly unpacked everything, skimmed the directions and manuals, ran down stairs and plugged that bad boy in. Mixed up some ultramarine blue and water mix (50:50) with three drops of 70% rubbing alcohol (someone mentioned using it at some point) and started spraying. I didn't mix that much because I didn't want to waste paint. I played around with it getting a feel for circles and of course writing your name on a sheet of paper. Once I thought I had it figured out I grabbed figure and went at it. About an hour later I had base coated three terminators and an 2nd edition whirlwind I picked up on eBay. I looked in the paint bowl on the airbrush and the paint level was nearing empty. This thing is incredible!!!! Base coating those four models would have taken about 45 minutes per terminator and probably at least two hours for the whirlwind by hand. The base coat is nice and even, no splotching or collecting around edging. Look out bank account 'cause I'm gonna be cruising through painting. :woot:

You can see the whirlwind in the background that is waiting to get painted. It will be the last in the line of 2nd Edition rhino chassis to complete.

Had to freehand the adeptus mechanicus symbol again because I didn't have any of the tank crew shoulder pads.

A new tactical marine that doesn't have a squad yet so he is unnumbered.

Anyone have any ideas for a good wash for the white? I'm thinking perhaps a really watered down Codex Grey.

I'd probably try Gryphonne Sepia, but you could probably get great advice on shading white from the Death Wing boys over in the Dark Angels forum.

Your painting is improving nicely, and I love the old 2nd Ed. vehicles.

How about some more interesting basing? Sand, rubble (cork boards broke up are great for this), spare parts from kits..?

When I got back into 40k and starting lurking around B&C I seriously thought about changing the bases to something more interesting. After looking at countless posts and pictures I found that unless I did some serious conversions (ie. repositioning legs into different stances) it seemed that some of the time the nice brush work was lost because your eyes were no longer drawn to the marine but the base he stands on. A further thing is at this point rebasing the figures would be an incredible task given the number of marines at this point. Thanks for the comment but I like the way the bases tend to disappear when looking at the figures.

I'm finally finished every rhino chassis variant for the Ultramarines. So tired of trolling eBay looking for old tanks to refurbish. Most of the ones I found were in pretty good condition. Naturally I had to strip them down and start over. Today I finished up the whirlwind. I'm really happy with it considering how much of a pain the missile turret was to paint.

I used the airbrush on the main body of the tank. Once that was dry I taped off everything but the treads and wheels and airbrushed those. Of all the sections of the rhino chassis the wheels and treads were my least favorite so this airbrush definitely helped.

I had to freehand the Ultramarines symbol as well as the Adeptus Mechanicus symbol.

I just forgot I never posted pictures of the rhino. This tank was the first vehicle I ever painted back in the mid-nineties. The razorback was the only other vehicle in my collection when I took a break from 40k. I decided pretty early on I didn't want to completely repaint the thing, I would rather keep it close to its original paint scheme. Back when I first painted it GW didn't have a collection of vehicle decals that included large Tactical symbols for the doors and top hatch so those had to be hand painted. Overall they weren't that bad but they needed a little touching up. Its decals were exactly as was shown on the box, so its company and squad markings were all wrong. That was also fixed. I decided to leave the metalics shiny as they were originally.

Thanks for the comment. It's nice to be done this little part of the army, I'm lookin forward to tackling "NEW tanks" not "new to me tanks.". I've never tried highlighting. Any recommendations? Is this something thats possible with the airbrush?

I really like the style and color of your army! Great work! Maybe try a little wash on the marines (i.e. the librarian face) to make some details pop out?

ANd just a question: why do you have those green bases? The color clashes terribly with the blue in my opinion

When I first picked up a space marine during 2nd edition green bases were the only thing I ever saw (in store and catalog). At the time I returned to painting I just kept at the green bases. I didn't feel the need to spend additional money on bases that could be spent on figures. As for color choice, just seemed natural to have a very basic green base. I didn't want to draw my eye away from the figure itself with a really complex base. It's never really crossed my mind to do a different scheme.

Allright :D Maybe it would look nice to but some grass on the bases so that they are not as naked as they are right now. If your marines do not stand on such a flat and boring surface they might look even better! It is a bit of work though :)

Perhaps some grey sand or pebbles? Now that you've brought it up, I'm kind of intrigued by the idea. What's the best way to get sand or pebbles to attach? Slather on a layer of the thicker glue and sprinkle it on?

I just put some white glue on the base (not sure what it is called in english) and then drag the base through the sand box I have :) When it is dry I wash the base with Badab Black. Then I put a few very small points of white glue on the sand and flock grass on those. The end result then looks like these: Bases
