Imperial Fists *Archamus wip and Land Raider complete*

First off, I'm really enjoying this thread and I am also on a Pre-Heresy/Heresy jaunt (though with Custodes), so I'm looking forward to you getting your army built so you can come defend my palace.

I think you are on the right track with the Landraider (though I'm a bigger fan of the newer version). My mold line buzzer went off when I looked at the tracks, so you might consider filing them down before you get to serious painting.

I do have a question about painting Sigismund. We're all aware that the BT adopted his heraldry upon their creation, but that made me wonder if Sigismund wore black armor? Is it possible? I don't know a whole lot about him other than what is in the BT codex and his appearances in "Mechanicum". I'd be curious to know what others think on this as it could influence a future project.

Also, where did his shield come from? I'm guessing WFB, but what bit is it?

Anyway, you're off to a smashing start. I'm looking forward to seeing your legion grow.

Cheers,

Thanks Honda. :tu:

In regards to the tracks, your absolutely right. I'll be attacking them with a file before I spray and paint.

For Sigismund, he is described in Flight of the Eisenstein as wearing the golden yellow of his legion. He adopted the black armour at the siege of Terra, in order to challenge the traitor hero's. His personal heraldry is the Maltese cross which is the Black Templar iconography. When given command of his own chapter, they adopted his new armour colour and his personal heraldry as their own (or his own).

As this will be pre-siege, I'll be doing his armour the same as the marines.

The shield on his back is from WRB, the standard Empire state troops set. It came with a bunch of iconographies to put on the shield, but I stuck with the cross.

However I'm not starting Sigismund till I get his potential sword from the mail. Will probably do the land raider before that turns up, though just finishing the last of my old school 2nd ed land speeders for my squadron depending if my son will sleep tonight!

Thanks for watching!

Ah, excellent. I had missed that detail in FotE (loved that story).

The IF unit I will be adding to my Custodes is circa the siege. Since I am using the GK codex to play them, it seems entirely appropriate to make him a Paladin.

Many thanx for this information!

Well I've been working on my first Heresy era Imperial Fist, though I haven't finished it yet. This model is the Games Day Forge World model. Loved it since I saw it, though I couldn't bring myself to dremel off the aquilas from his fantastic model. I know that only primarch's and the Emperor's Children could wear the aquila at this stage, but since this guy is either going to be a commander model or a veteran sgt for some baording marines, I figure his done some epic deed to impress his primarch, so he has been honoured thus with the aquila. A long shot, but not going to change it now.

I do plan on accompanying this guy with a set of 10 marines in MK III armour, and with boarding shields and just counting them as Veterans in Age of the Emperor or vanguard vets with storm shields in 40k. Costly unit, but hopefully they will look cool.

Sill haven't started Sigismund, as I'm still awaiting his sword, though I must say that I was wrong to put him in golden armour, as I just recently discovered his descriptive entrance in Horus Rising, stating he was resplendent in his black and white heraldry. So that means I'll be painting him Black Templar style.

This guy is still being finished, so any comments welcome.

Made a little progress. Applied some battle damage and I had a go at some glowing lenses. First time I've tried this. Let me know what you think.

I wouldn't have messed with the eagle on the shield either...question as I'm still a "learnin" the PH stuff, isn't the single headed eagle representitive of the Emperor as his device? Isn't that different than the two headed eagle (i.e. aquila)?

I think he looks most excellent. My only comment would be for the OSL glow on the eyes. I did a ton of these a while back and I used this basic technique:

1. Paint lenses and general area "South" of the lens with your chose color. Consider fading the edges of the light into the base armor color using blending.

2. Pick a lighter color in the same range and highlight the upper cheek bone and draw a line across the lens.

3. Mix some Skull White with the color in #2, and highlight again. Make sure to use thin layers.

4. Last highlight with thinned Skull White.

In the case of my army, I used, Scorpion Green and Bilious Green for my highlights.

The picture is only intended to provide a guide for how the eyes should be highlighted.

Anyway, he looks awesome and I look forward to seeing more!

Thanks a bunch Honda!

Didn't know about the Emperor's agent thing, but that sounds good to me.

Really liked your tutorial on the lenses, so I gave mine another go, trying to blend it into the armour a bit better. Let me know what you think.

As I understand it, Sigismund's heraldry is unique only to him - he may have black and white devices on his shoulderpads and other armour segments, but he will still be in the Legion colours. Also, when Sigismund enters in Horus Rising it says "The first two were Astartes, gleaming in their yellow plate.", and since Sigismund's one of these two, he must stick to the Legion colours. So, actually, you were right to put him in yellow armour, and Black templar armour would be wrong in this case.

That aside, I do love this log, yellow's an extremely hard colour to paint and you've pulled it off with style (and your white is excellent too).

Yes, that turned out much nicer, now the green isn't as harsh against the red helm. ;)

Now, where's Sigismund? lol

Looking forward to seeing more.

@Emperor's Instrument Thanks, I think it looks much better now.

@Dark Link Thanks for that info Dark Link. Looked at the novel again, and a few pages before where I was looking is exactly as you describe. Made me so happy you have no idea! Now Sigismund is on my painting table, hoping to get him done soon.

@Honda Cheers for the help Honda, Sigismund is on the way.

@Talthus Thanks Talthus, was planning on having a squad of MK III armour with boarding shields be this guys buddies. Think it might look cool and I blame the new anthology Shadows of Treachery for this, damn cover art!

Well I've completed the boarding marine, just completed the base. Enjoy!

I can imagine how annoyed you must have felt when you thought to do him in black and white, the Heresy era can be one of the most infuriating eras to work with because of that - a lot of the information is contradictory and it's bound to start a few discussions here and there, but it can be one of the most rewarding periods to work in. Now just get Sigismund finished and up on here for us to gawk at :(

Well I've made a start with Sigismund. His coming along quite well. The yellow armour combined with the white shoulder pads and red cloak seem to work well. However I'm wandering what kind of freehand to try for the cloak? Was thinking perhaps the black and white crenelations, same as on the commander for my avatar. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also still waiting for that sword, to see if it would look better, so I've left the original one on their for now.

@Talthus Thanks man!

Here I have Sigismund, nearly complete. Added the OSL for the lenses but haven't started the free hand on the cloak yet. Still unsure what to do tbh. Anyways, let me know what you think.

Only thing left basically is the cloak, sword and battle damage. Oh and the base of course!

Looking great. Maybe for the freehand you could go with a sort of half-templar cross thing as an edging? I'll try and find a picture for reference.

Here are a couple of ideas, haven't been able to find what I suggested though:

and

I think the second one would surely look good, I don't know how hard it would be to pull off...

As ever Talthus comes to the rescue :)

Really good ideas there, quite like both of them! Certainly some good inspiration for me to try out.

EDIT: Went ahead and tried out a combination of those patterns on the inside of his cloak. Let me know what you think. Still need something for the back though.
