Gametable WIP

My uncle, who is a carpenter, gave me a most excellent christmas present, a gaming table for 40k:

If you're wondering why there's a giant hole in the center, that's where my Realm of Battle gameboard tiles fit. An extra support in the middle of the length of the table was added after this picture was taken, so each tile is supported by all borders. And because you don't have a large tabletop, you can easily take it apart if you want to move it. Especially since it is placed my attic, which is on the 3rd floor.

A demo shot with my yet to be painted terrain, some of my 'Nids and my WIP Grey Knights army. And of course, the Fortress of Redemption; I had to get it as it literally had my name written all over it. As you can see, the Realm of Battle tiles fit in flush with the table, so they don't move around while you play but you don't need to use the clips the board comes with. If you want to change the board set up, you can easily push a tile out from the bottom. The edge of the table kan be used to place your rule books, dice, drinks, reserves, casualties, etc.

And two more random photo's to finish the post:

Now I need to decide which theme to paint my Realm of Battle board in. And most importantly, find the time to paint the board, paint the Fortress of Redemption, finish the Imperial Strongpoint, build and paint the Imperial Sector which is still in the box and finish my Grey Knight army... *sigh* I really need to learn to paint more before I buy more plastic crack. :)

My jaw hit the floor. There is SOOO much space to work with, its mind boggling and jealousy inducing. I'm looking a tad like a salamander here. Looks like you definitely had a good christmas though. :)

That's awesome. Further cut-in dice rolling boxes would be great. Hate it when they ricochet of the table and end up under the shelves...

I actually considered adding cut-in boxes in the side panels for dice rolling, but then I figured it's more general purpose like this. Plus the support frame would be in the way of the boxes, so those would have to be modified as well. I can add a couple of blank 24"x24" plates instead of the Realm of Battle plates and just use it as a regular table for games of Dreadfleet or Space Hulk or something. And when my regular Ork opponent comes by, it's easy enough to put something like an empty landraider box on one of the sides for the stupendous amount of dice he can throw.

I can add plates with cut-in features like lakes or trenches on the board itself with this setup though; as the plates are only suspended by their edges, the middle of a board section can be lower.

This is great. Would you mind sharing a basic rundown on the parts used and the assembly?

My uncle does interiors at a shipyard for luxury yachts and made most of the table from cut-offs and scraps he could get his hands on. I supplied him with some rough napkin 'blue prints' of what I wanted with the dimensions of the realm of battle board and he took it from there.

The table is made out of 13 sub assemblies, with the 8 being the main structure and 5 just being the lattice in the middle. If required, the entire table can be put together/taken apart with about 20 screws, which takes something like 10 minutes with a powered screwdriver.

The first 4 sub assemblies form the support frame. 2 are made out of the table legs and the side boards, while the other 2 consist of the sides of the long table edges. These are attached to each other by 'ledikant haken' (bed hooks?). Some removable screws are added for stability.

The table top is again created in 4 sections: 2 long table edges and 2 short table edges. Each section is made by attaching two strokes of mdf wood to each other, with the top one being smaller than the bottom one. The wider bottom plate forms the outer rim that supports the Realm of Battle board, while the smaller top plate (the white boards in the pictures) has the same height as the ream of battle board (about a centimeter), making the board nice and flush with the table.

You attach one long table edge to the top of the support frame. All 4 of the top sections have little blocks attached to them on the the bottom to guide them into their positions on the support frame. Then both short table edges are inserted into the side of the long table edges with a lamella connection. The other long table edge then locks the side edges in place.

The lattice in the middle is made out of 5 sections, which are simply two strokes of wood attached with glue and screws to each other in a T to add strenght and prevent drooping/sagging of the wood.

If you need more information or pictures of a specific joint or something I'm more than happy to provide. :tu:

  • 2 weeks later...
that is fully awesome, the house I'm moving into soon has a massive 'games room' (the others don't know that's what it is yet, but they'll find out!) in the lower ground floor... I may have to have a go at making something along these lines!

Well it's been long enough, time to get this project up and running again. A friend (Brother Nezulius) and myself have been asked to do some 40k demos at a Dutch scale modelling event held mid September, and we can't turn up with heaps of unpainted scenery now, can't we? :)

And I have lots of unpainted scenery to go:

- Realm of Battle Board

- Fortress of Redemption (awesome kit, and quite literally had my name written on it :P)

- Skyshield Landing Pad (duos as a display stand for flyer models)

- Imperial Strongpoint (two bastions and a load of Aegis Defence Lines, although 2 Quad-guns were already scavanged for my GK Dreads)

- Imperial Sector (to 'ruin' somebody's day ;))

- Blastscape and Citadel Woods (to get my area terrain on)

- Various objective markers (need something to fight over, don't we? ;))

Don't know if I can finish everything up before the event, but I'll give it my best shot. :P

So, starting from the ground up, first up: the Realm of Battle board. I went with a bit of an earthy desolate plains look, with a warm deep brown earth in contrast with cold grey rock. I picked this scheme because it goes well with the colours of most armies and doesn't draw too much attention to itself.

Basecoated the earth with burnt umber, then drybrushed my way through medium grey up to beige in various mixtures and patches to create a natural look. I intend to airbrush various patches of a dark maroon red to create more colour differentiation and to make the slopes of the hills pop out a bit more, once I pick up a new bottle of paint.

A close up of the rocks. Airbrushed them in a dark grey, then drybrushed them up to a light steely grey.

And to do: skulls, and lots of them. A few drybrush passes with various shades of grey and beige should work fine I reckon.

Away from home for work now, so I hope to continue on Wednesday. ;)

Thought about using static grass, but haven't seen anything I like. It's usually seems unnatural, not to mention the mess static grass usually gives. I think I'll just leave it barren earth and rock for now, decorating it mainly with terrain elements like buildings and area terrain. I can always add it later if I ever change my mind.

Very cool. Really like the barren earth table. I've been debating getting a table for years, as I quite like the idea of it folding away (the realm of battle table I mean). Will be keeping an eye on this.

A small update:

http://i45.tinypic.com/16bizyg.jpg

Drybrushed the skull pits from medium grey up to a beige to keep them somewhat muted. Wanted them to stand out a little bit, but not be too much of an eyesore.

Made the hills 'pop' a bit more by airbrushing a dark maroon red around the edges. And also, moar skulls.

A top view. I also airbrushed patches of the maroon red in various places, breaking up the monotone brown somewhat. Did I mention the skulls?

And my models feel right at home! I like how the brown turned out, I think it goes very well with the silver/white/red/blue of my Grey Knights and the beige/black/purple of my 'Nids. There's some skulls in the bottom right in case you didn't notice.

And I'm going to leave the board like this, at least for the moment. I'm quite happy with the result, but you never know when you get an idea to improve something. B)

Up next, the Fortress of Redemption. And, yep, you've seen that right, more skulls! Khorne would be so proud of me.
