Vanquishers DIY Chapter

Recommended Posts

Greetings all B+Cers! The new year has come and the Librarium Painting Challenge has returned for us all to challenge our painting and modelling skills to get a shiny banner and quite possibly more if we succeed and absolute shame if we don't with the cost of writing a new article as atonement for our failures.

Thus I decree:

I, Brother Cambrius of the Liber Astartes, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least 2 Tactical Squads, a Vehicle and a Commander of my new army, the Vanquishers on or before the 31st of March, 2011. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

Having failed last year's challenge spectacularly, I still carry the sig of shame and I patiently await for the Librarium's revamp when I'll post up my article on making my Cambrius Pattern Helms. I have also decreed that should I fail again, I will also work to add two further articles for failing twice in a row, thus I would have to submit three articles overall, one of them being my article for last year's.

But onto the actual challenge I have set myself. I've decided to start a fresh army to build and paint for this year's gaming, which will hopefully include me participating in a Doubles Tournament and also an inter-Uni competition in April. After painting numerous miniatures as part of my ongoing Operation Reclamation project, I decided to go with making a purple Chapter, as painting with purple was so easy and satisfying. :) You don't see many purple armies either, unless they're Hawk Lords or Pre-Heresy Emperor's Children, so it'll stand out nicely.

After consulting the many, many chapters I had created using the SMP, I decided to choose and work on a Chapter I called the Vanquishers:

smbeta2.php?bpe=BFCDE0&bpj=821B94&bp=821B94&bpc=821B94&hdt=BFCDE0&hdm=BFCDE0&hdl=BFCDE0&ey=24D6D6&er=BFCDE0&pi=333333&nk=821B94&ch=821B94&eg=EFB736&sk=EFB736&abs=821B94&bt=821B94&cod=821B94&ull=821B94&lk=BFCDE0&lll=821B94&lft=821B94&url=821B94&rk=BFCDE0&lrl=821B94&rft=821B94&slt=BFCDE0&sli=821B94&srt=BFCDE0&sri=821B94&ula=BFCDE0&lel=BFCDE0&lla=BFCDE0&lw=BFCDE0&lh=BFCDE0&ura=BFCDE0&rel=BFCDE0&rla=BFCDE0&rw=BFCDE0&rh=BFCDE0&bg=FFFFFF&rb=333333&gr=333333&wg=true&laurel=true&mk8=true&imperialfistpad=true&ti=FFFFFF&lkg4=2E853A&blt=001522

They are a Crimson Fists descendant, who specialise in City fighting. I intend to portray that with the modelling, giving a close quarters firefight aspect to the models. I'll also be adding random bits and pieces to the bases to hep emphasize this, however much of it will probably be sprues cut up in various ways to represent this as I have no City bitz to use. :D I also intend to use the moulded Crimson Fist shoulderpad bitz and other iconography available from GW's online store, to help make the models stand out a little bit more.

Onwards with the challenge! ;)

Good luck with this years challenge, brother!

Thank you Olisredan. It's going to be a fun one to do!

Cool looking chapter good luck with the challenge.

Thanks Grimdarkness, I may make the actual purple just a tad bit darker so it's not too garish, but I'll decide that when I've done a test paint or two.

Onwards with some early pictures! I've assembled ~ 18 marines thus far for the chapter, you'll notice that some do not have right or left shoulder pads attached, that's because I will be adding the GW Sculpted Fist shoulder pads in due course. ;) I'll probably remove some of the shoulder pads added on some of my other marines too.

Thus I present my first sub-squad, under the command of Veteran Sergeant Torros:

gallery_26154_4148_303387.jpg

And with some close ups of individuals, I've tried to give them the look of a close combating unit with blades and some minor aggressive poses in places. First of all is Veteran Sergeant Torros himself, wielding a plasma pistol and power fist (since every Son of Dorn chapter must have fists in at least 1 in 2 of their sergeants :P). I've used some Chaos Marine shoulder pad on his left arm after cleansing it of any taint as I like the raised outer trim, which makes sense to protect the sergeant from incoming fire and debris when he's smashing through a wall. The blade's also been added as Chaos Marine blades just look so much cooler and ornate. :P

gallery_26154_4148_228745.jpg

Next is Brother Didor, throwing a grenade into an area filled with some soon to be shredded enemies. :) A combat blade's also added onto his back, ready to be easily pulled out so he can chop and slice up anyone who dares to charge him.

gallery_26154_4148_248326.jpg

And here is Brother Tanis, wielding a custom flamer which I shortened the barrel of, so it's more compact and easier to wield in the confined spaces of a built up area. I really like how it came out so I may do that in future with any other flamers I might include.

gallery_26154_4148_183635.jpg

Fourthly we have Brother Dapar, who currently has both his bolter and pistol out ready to deal with any nasty surprises if the squad is ambushed. He also has his trusty combat blade mag-clamped to his back should things get a bit too dicey.

gallery_26154_4148_242222.jpg

And finally it's the Missile Launcher wielding marine of Sub-squad Torros, Brother Caletra. I've got way too many missile launcher marines who look like clones of each other with the arm you normally use to show the marine holding his ML steady, so I instead went with a pose of him reloading his ML with a frag missile to deal with some sneaky hiding xenos or heretics...

gallery_26154_4148_122366.jpg

And that is all for now! I may update my LPC to include a chaplain in the future since I've managed to finally strip off the close to 3mm of enamel paint covering him. I'll ensure his tarnished soul is healed by giving him a badass colour scheme and jump pack too. I'll post up pictures of my other marines for this LPC soon too so stay tuned!

not the best place in the pic for a rocket... It kinda looks a little naughty

Not the mind it comes from, it's the mind it goes into DeathKnight2000. ;) Shame on you for such thoughts! The Chaplain's waiting in the Reclusiam. :P

It looks a lot better from any other angle, it's just that angle that look wrong.

UPDATE TIME! :D

Well a few more days have passed and I have slowly continued in my building of my shiny new Vanquishers! These marines will now not just be fighting in the University Competition in April of this year, but the Vanquishers will also combine forces with the Tau of my friend to participate in the Warhammer 40000 Doubles tournament at the turnover of June to July! So I will be working hard to ensure that my models' basing will coincide with my friend's Tau in it being cityscape themed bases.

Thus here we have the two Tactical Squads, both nearly completed in terms of modelling. All I must do to finish them off is to obtain the moulded shoulderpads from GW when my Student Loan is in and also to build one more heavy weapon specialist and some other details on some specific models before basing them all.

Tactical Squad Raelan:

gallery_26154_4148_1310948.jpg

Tactical Squad Torros:

gallery_26154_4148_2193396.jpg

And also here are five Veteran Sergeant whom I've previously built and based and will be used possibly as Vanguard and to interchange with the other sergeants in my army.

gallery_26154_4148_3498092.jpg

I will add single shots of those sergeants above later on. :)

Next, some specific shots of individual marines, the first being a model that was shown no love by his previous owner, who must have been a ham fisted child using a tank brush covered in enamel paint on this poor Astartes warrior.

After stripping the heavy paint off of him using Fairy's Power Spray (excellent for any models you need to strip. Strongly recommend it!) and giving him a new firearm, I give you all the Chaplain of my Vanquishers' force.

Honoured Reclusiarch Seros Volan:

gallery_26154_4148_261986.jpg

I will be giving the Chaplain a jump pack as well so he can lead a squad of assault marines or vanguard, but will be keeping it separate form the model for the time being so I can paint him properly.

Next up is Brother Gald, who is inspecting his Auspex to try and detect if any enemies are attempting to ambush the squad he's in as they advance through the streets of a ruined. I tried to angle his bolter to make it look like he's shielding the Auspex's screen from a glare of light with his bolter:

gallery_26154_4148_26491.jpg

Wielding a revered relic bolter, gifted to him after his exemplary marksmanship against the Dark Eldar on Gallus by Captain Trechor. He also carries a special hunting knife, originating from the tribesmen of the Vanquishers' homeworld. (the knife originates from the RTB101 set I managed to plunder on eBay.)

And that ladies and gentlemen is all for now! Further pictures will be posted soon so stay tuned!

Comments and advice/critique is greatly welcomed. :)

Another day, another picture update!

Further pictures of individuals in the Tactical Squads, I'm still trying to give each a uniqueness from one Astartes to the other, which is getting a little tricky, but a decent bitz box is helping to give each Astartes a little bit of character.

So firstly, we have Brother Co'lez, who carries a litany of devotion to Dorn and the Emperor upon his right pauldron and has his bayonet affixed to his bolter to deal with any close quarter combats in the city ruins. He is has been tipped to join the Reclusiaam at some point due to his faith in the Emperor's judgement and his ability to boost the morale of Squad Torros:

gallery_26154_4148_42208.jpg

Next is Brother Antonus, who wields an older mark of bolter to his brethren that is belt fed instead of using magazines. I plundered the Chaos Space Marine bolter from my bitz box and got rid of any filthy chaos markings [:)] so it now looks like a unqiue, ornate bolter. I'll also be painting it a bronzed gold to help emphasize Antonus' older mark of bolter compared to his squad:

gallery_26154_4148_38468.jpg

Finally we have Brother Septon. Septon is the specialised sniper of Squad Raelan, using his customised bolter with added silencer (and will soon have a scope on top to help). He has often dealt with hidden enemies in cover when the squad are pinned down by fire. The barrel of the bolter comes from cotton buds/q-tips as they are the perfect size for silencers on bolters.

gallery_26154_4148_159031.jpg

That's all for now. I'll be sanding and spraying these models in due course, I will also upload the vehicle that will be part of my LPC, which is a Vindicator as what else could possibly befit a chapter that specialises in city fighting?

Comments are as always appreciated! :)

Antonus looks like he's sporting a massive pharaoh-level goatie:)

:) That's because it's the comm system microphone on his head as I used the one form the Rhino set. Once it's painted up I'm sure it won't look so evil. *strokes my own goatee in contemplation*

Goatees ftw! I'd suggest a goatee high five, but i can't so far devise an acceptable way to do so. Maybe the goatee on the model isn't a bad idea. I have a spare comm-head lying around somewhere from the land raider sprue and i had no constructive ideas on it's application so far. Now i do :) Also where does the helmet on the central sergeant come from (the one with a flat muzzle structure)? It would fit the mk8 armors great!

Goatees...such a fine taste in facial wear...:tu: I might consider doing the same at some point when I build some more models for this LPC...

Ah now that helmet is my own Cambrius Pattern© helm which is made from a Mk.VI (Beaky) helm. Here's a better pic of one:

gallery_26154_4383_3663023.jpg

The Librarium article I intend to submit should I fail is a tutorial on how to create htis pattern of helm. It's so simple it's unbelievable!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look. :)

My pleasure Ch@oZ. I'll post up a pic of the helmeted marine once I've got a base coat on him. :whistling:

Now that I'm back in Uni, I have pulled out the box of miniatures I acquired off of a friend, which contained a number of ancient metal models from the early 90s and after. now that I've done my trial run using Power Spray, I decided that today I'll start stripping the metal models down so I can continue in the building of my Vanquishers. I have also increased my Vow ever so slightly, by pledging to complete two Commanders instead of one and I will also be working on building an objective for the Vanquishers alongside one of my previous ones I had made for the Vanquishers.

Onto the pictures, unfortunately my friend was an impressive converter at the age he owned his Space Marines, but his painting skills were not as great (mind you who can blame a 10 year old for thick paints now? You? Really? How cruel...).

gallery_26154_4148_3758964.jpg

And some of these will be the Astartes I will intend on using in the Vanquishers force, including the Librarian, Techmarine and the 1990 Captain with the power fist (in DA colours):

gallery_26154_4148_3363441.jpg

Next as a preview of a vehicle I intend do as part of my vow:

gallery_26154_4148_3759992.jpg

Yes that is a classic Whirlwind turret. I'm going to attempt to add this onto a modern Rhino Chassis (I'm mad I tell you...mad!) to add a unique look and flavour to my Vanquishers.

I will now also be hopefully fielding these boys in a GW Doubles tournament in June/July alongside my friend's Tau army. Further updates will be coming soon, stay tuned!

for your guy with the stalker class bolter instead of Q-tip tubes try using the older smoke launcher glue together then cut the "launcher tube" off to make three silencer- looking fronts for your bolters. they look awesomely-like the telion/ scout ones but longer.

Genius DeathKnight2000! I might just do that in future with some of my Vanquishers. Thanks for the suggestion! :D

Looking good Cambrius, that whirlwind turret looks like it could fit nicely into a modern Rhino hatch. As I was looking at your thread earlier I spotted a cotton bud and and out came something sharp ;) I'll link you my LPC thread when I make it tomorrow.

I have that 90s Captain as an Ultra! Still an ace mini (just a bit short >_<) good luck with the vow and I will be watching :D

I'll be finding out if it does once I've built my new Rhino tomorrow Reyner. :)

Glad to hear the cotton bud method;s worked, but I cannot take the credit for the idea, the great Tiny Sam first showed it here in tutorials. :)

Looking forward to seeing it!

Well, after 24 hours of bathing in Fairy Power Spray, here's the end result after cleaning them down (I generally only had to rub the model between my fingers and thumb and it peeled away!):

gallery_26154_4148_2264287.jpg

And the two Commanders whom I'll be working on alongside a Techmarine:

gallery_26154_4148_415808.jpg

The Whirlwind bits are being treated to another bath along with some other minor bits and pieces as the whirlwind had at least 4 layers of paint in an array of colours beneath! :eek I managed to get a huge amount off as shown and a Xacto blade helped to ease clumps off, but the detailed cockpit needs more spraying as to the missiles themselves. I'll sort them out tomorrow and I may have a newly built rhino to test to see if the old bits fit onto the new one with ease.

Further updates will be coming soon including some painting! :D

Nice collection of classics there (Wish I'd kept some of mine) :P

Cant wait to see some paint on these as I want to see how that scheme works out.

Cheers Razblood! The classics are well before my time, but I find they have a lot more unique character to them so they're a lot more fun to build and paint with this army. :)

After taking out the recent batch form their bath, I managed to clean up the Whirlwind bitz properly and have discovered that the 2 important parts fit onto a modern Rhino chassis easily! :cuss I'm debating over adding some pasticard covering onto the missiles themselves, or keep them as they are. What do you guys think?

gallery_26154_4148_80109.jpg

And next I've put my Librarian onto a base and have used the classic bolter holding arm to make it look like he's using his psyker abilities to raise the ground before him or to unleash a torrent of flame at the enemies before him. I'll be painting his eyes to be a glowing green to emphasize that he's using his psyker abilities.

gallery_26154_4148_118836.jpg

I'm cracking open the painting pots shortly to see how the scheme will look with the method I intend on using, being a Midnight blue basecoat, with Liche Purple mixed with Warlock Purple as the armour colour alongside Chainmail and Mithril Silver, given a wash of Badab black and Leviathan Purple.

Until then!

Test paint has finally been done! I ended up doing this painting method below on one of my "reclaimed" models that had been rather abused by its previous owner:

Basecoat:

1x Layer of Midnight Blue

1x Thinned layer of Liche Purple

1x Layer Boltgun Metal

1x Layer Dark Angels Green

Upper Coat:

1x Thinned layer of Liche Purple

1x Layer Mithril Silver

1x Layer Goblin Green

Washes:

Leviathan Purple

Badab Black

And here's the result, Brother Volan of the 4th Company, 2nd Squad. Volan's served within the 2nd squad of the Fourth Company for nearly 100 Terran years and has been a dependable warrior to do any task he's been ordered too. On his left kneepad he beard a golden vertical stripe, indicating his service in the boarding assaults of the Fire Wraiths' Chaos fleet, the 3 representing he participated in 3 successful assaults.

More painting will hopefully be upcoming over the weekend. :D
