Of Rubrics and Wolves

Recommended Posts

I am, after several years of admiring other peoples logs, doing one of my own, sadly I am not that brilliant, but I do enjoy painting and converting, the main problem recently has been getting round to actually finishing things, so I have signed up for the http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...44493&st=50 Librarium painting challenge, having vowed two Alpha legionaries, a chaos dreadnought plasma cannon, five Rubric terminators, a daemon prince and a Wolf lord.

First up, pics of the bits I've got for the alpha legionaires, after rumaging in my bits box, it turns out I have enough for 2 and a champion, who if I make would in all probability just have a personal icon, combi plasma and melta bombs unless anyone thinks a combat weapon of some kind would be good.

Ah, This is a problem, I have the photo's saved on my computer, but can't paste it onto the log and insert image just comes up with a request for a URL, what do I do to get upload the pictures from my computer to the log?

at the top of the screen on the B&C there's a link 'My Albums', click on that one and create an Album. As soon as you've done that you can start uploading images. I prefer to use the Bulk Upload function, even if I'm only doing 1 image, it's just quicker.

Once you've got the images uploaded, view them in your gallery and on the far right hand side there'll be 4 boxes with text in, to display the images in a thread/post you need to copy and paste everything in the BBCode box.

Thank you very much, so now that I know how to work the images, here are what I have got at the moment

The first is of what will be Alpha legionaries (turned out I had the parts for way more then 2!) including an aspiring champion who I have assembled between when I made the first post

gallery_49955_6811_49220.jpg

His base is drying (I managed to get a sheet of plastic that looks like flagstones That I am sticking to the bases of all my new Thousand Sons/Alpha legion.) The second is some of the bits I've got to use on the alpha legionaires and champion, whilst the third is the plasma cannon for the dreadnought.

The Wolf lord for the oath is here

gallery_49955_6811_16630.jpg

as you see, I have a lot of work on him to do though not nearly as much as I have on the terminators and Daemon Prince.

I say it should be easy to get done in time, but knowing me I will finish the alpha legionaires, start the terminators, and then get cought up in uni work/life and only remember with a week to go :( To try and prevent this, I shall aim to do at least one update a week to make sure I keep progress up, especially when I get onto the daemon prince..

With the champ I tried to make it look like he was resting his chainsword on his shoulder as he was directing the squads fire, as it is he looks like he is about to swing :eek

This is the backpack he will have gallery_49955_6811_2713.jpg

I do apologies about the quality of the pictures. I have realised a problem however, my newly made maximini account has my uni address for details, which means I cannot order the maximini bits I will use for the terminators till next week as I am only going back on Friday.

My Second problem, which is why you see them like this and not basecoated, is that I left my spray paint at uni.

Yes, not the most intelligent choice I know, considering I got a FW Warphunter as well for christmas... yeah, I am really kicking myself over that.

So expect more pictures around next friday evening!

I am back at uni! and have now basecoated my stuff

gallery_49955_6811_33540.jpg

His arm fell off, so I am going o paint it before gluing it back on.

gallery_49955_6811_20365.jpg

Have no idea why this one is so blurry

gallery_49955_6811_59772.jpg

I left one of my paints at home, hormagaunt purple which I use for my Alpha legion colors, though will be visiting home on thursday as I forgot a lot of other stuff, so the only stuff I will be able to work on is the plasma cannon and the champion's robes, though I am not sure what color to do them, was thinking a deep green possibly or a dark blue with orange fire trim (or perhaps some kind of greek style trim?) Any suggestions?

Well here is the latest.

gallery_49955_6811_107723.jpg

The metal I have used the recipe/technique used by Kizzdog on his nightlords, I still have to do a wash and highlight the whole dread though.

gallery_49955_6811_73230.jpg

Not the best Picture I know, this guys bolter is all ready and once he is finished it will be put on.

gallery_49955_6811_75601.jpg

The champ is coming along, Though I am not sure which colors to use on the robes, so all suggestions would be welcome, I was thinking perhaps a very dark blue green with orange flames?

The last guy, coming along nicely.

All suggestions and comments welcome.

Good stuff so far!

Love to see some Alphas.

I think your camera is focusing on the wood table rather than your minis. Try putting a sheet of plain white paper under (and behind) then when you take photos, then it should target the mini. I often have the same problem: the camera focuses on the table, they keyboard in the background or the texture of the base!

Just did the wash and highlighting on the plasma cannon, though I am not happy on it

gallery_49955_6811_35567.jpg

Any advice? Am going to try and touch it up, the silver just becomes so hard to actually use finely once you water it though it is a nightmare trying to highlight with it, perhaps a non metallic paint would have been a better highlight for the metal?

Have ordered the grey knight torsos, will try to use green stuff to chaosify them. Have done some more painting though:

The champ is coming along, any advice/opinions on the flames?

gallery_49955_6811_2793.jpg

gallery_49955_6811_2144.jpg

Next this guy, I tried to do some markings on his shoulder pad.

gallery_49955_6811_42288.jpg

Not that happy with this guy, his shoulder marking went bad and I now need to redo it.

and just to prove their is more the terminators then just words...

On the flames for your champion; I'd make them more "flamey". Honestly, I had no idea they were flames when I looked at the picture. I thought his robe was just dirty. It very well be the quality of the photo, though.

The bodies and arms for my terminators have arrived! Just waiting for the legs and bases to arrive (my lgs spent all of it's money getting the new magic stuff in)

There is a problem, when I ordered them I thought the artifice bits were like on the old metal ones, in fake latin and not really translatable but looked cool, whereas the new ones are in english (and quite large considering the size of the model) with things like "daemon bane" "Shield Faith" "Grey Knight" and "Banish Daemon" which all come across as incredably corny and cartoony, (I know GW is aiming at kids now, even if it means taking a flamethrower to the fluff, depth and other reasons they got so big.) plus they arn't really sutible for Thousand sons, so has anyone got any ideas/advice on how to convert this?

I was thinking of carefully carving out the english charecters, and then green stuffing various symbols, heiroglypths and mandarin charecters (I do a module of it at uni.) would this work?

I think that you could "fill in" the english words with green stuff to make those areas smooth, and then put new symbols (either painted or green stuff) on top so they sit proud of the armour as opposed to the bas-relief of the original. It would probably be alot easier than trying to carve out the old words and then putting new ones in.

Take a look at the old metal Rune Priest in Terminator Armour on GW's site to see what I mean.

Hope it helps. Good luck, whichever way you go! :)

sorry about the deley, but here is pictures of what has happened, the dreadnought is basically finished now I think apart form some symbols and heiroglyphs/charecters I need to paint on, think his missile launcher may be a bit plain :

gallery_49955_6811_7950.jpg

see any glaring mistakes I've missed? I'm not sure on giving him a base as i have seen pictures form 2nd edition where dreads had no bases.

Now it's what you guys have been waiting for the start of the terminators!

gallery_49955_6811_53291.jpg

sorry about the blurry pic, my camera seems to hate those two.

the asp.champ/sorcerer with heavy flamer and chainfist in progress.

What do you think and any advice for using milliput as you can see I am trying it out.

Try taking your photos from a bit further away (you can always crop it afterwards on your PC), that way you should be able to get them in focus. I'd be interested to see what you've done with the terminators.

As for the dreadnought, I think you could touch up where colours meet a bit. For example on the first pic there seem to be bits of yellow on the blue pannel (his left `chest`) and some white between the blue and the bronze on his right arm. A fine brush and a few minutes and it'll look much better.

How about giving it a blue wash, a black or brown one on the exhausts and...say a Gryphonne Sepia one on the yellow areas? You could then highlight the edges with a slightly lighter tone of each colour.

The bits still have not arrived, and as they are the legs and bases... yeah, I'm hoping they arrive in time..

Found an old metal grey knight in my bits box at home, so I present Thutmosis Ptah, adept of the Corvidae

I know the pics arn't that good (ho I have no spare paper or anything white to use as a background at the moment is surprising..

What do you think?

What sort of camera are you using?

Try putting it into macro mode if you can - it will allow you to take beautifully clear shots from as little as 4cm away (Or possibly closer depending on Super Macro/the camera)

This picture for example **OFFSITE LINK** was taken with a normal, every day ultra zoom digital camera. (Fujifilm S5800 if I recall)

Either way, your models are coming along nicely. I'll be stalking this one.

Ooo pretty! :P my camera is a Canon Digital IXUS 95IS, should hopefully have him basecoated in a few days, have an essay and a test at the end of the week so am spending most of my time working this week :(

I haven't sold one of them in a few years... takes me back.

Fantastic camera in the day!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they have macro mode, with a minimum focus range of 5cm. Just direct a couple of lights towards your model, stick the camera on a stable surface, and Cleeeek!

I rarely use a photobooth. Sure they make pictures easier because the camera knows what to focus on, but I find them too time consuming to set up.

A simplified version is just to position the model against a wall on a counter - just make sure you have enough light!

With a point and click like the canon you have, light is extremely important.

Hope that helps a bit.
