How do I create Special Characters for my chapter, such as CHapter Master, some specific captains, etc.? What are the rules pertaining to this? Thanks.

Unfortunately there aren't really any official rules/guidelines regarding this as far as I know :/

However, if you check the homegrown rules sub-forum you may find some examples/guides.

But you would only be able to use such a created character in a house game with your opponents permission.

Probably the easiest way would be to use a standard HQ statline with select wargear options and just give him a little background story.

Hope this is helpful :)

Taunt Marine found that thing you were looking for and cordially invites you to come and retrieve it. It is a can. He may even open it for you.

Basically what Razblood said, choose a character from whichever codex your using and use their stat line. Then choose a name and backstory and it's all good.

This is a good place to start: Special Characters, based off a 2nd ed formula but i'm sure that there are others through out the forum that can help.

Pay the points for a chapter master. Does your character have a power sword? pay the points for a power sword. Paint a model.

You did it!

two words, "count- as"
special charector with power fist? "count-as" Pedro kantor
special charector with power sword? "count as" Cato Sicarius"
ect...
also if you want to go by the fluff, check lexicanum for the names and articles of previous CMs or Captains, stuff like that.

This is a good place to start: Special Characters, based off a 2nd ed formula but i'm sure that there are others through out the forum that can help.

Formulae are useful, but a lot of them don't quite match up to the way SCs work in 5th edition; (Chaplain Cassius, for example, comes out at 200 points using those rules)

If you want to homebrew a Special Character, it really boils down to guesstimating/tweaking until you hit a point where most folks agree it's reasonably balanced.

Be creative, eg dont do what most do and give the homebrewn character 1 more wound& attack, ridiculous high WS, eternal warrior and feel no pain. 75% think it makes their character unique and 75% of these homebrewn characters are the same.

Have to agree with Spacefrisian. You want a homebrewed SC to bring something unique and thematic to your army. Focus on what makes your army/commander unique enough to merit it's own leader. Adding in Chapter Tactics is an obvious starting point, but from there add in a few more bits of flavor.

Not to toot my own horn, but I do have an SC I just came up with on the front page of this section (Cenric the Unerring) who seems to have been fairly well received if you want an example.

Forgot to add in the standard - Relic Blade + Storm-Shield + Artificer Armour equipping. :)

...And now time for your hourly dose of Imperial propaganda:

the main thing is not to do it this way around (exactly like tattoos)... you dont sit down and say "damn, i really want me some of that special character... yeah, what my army need is a great dose of generic specialty"...
to get it 'right' you have to be in the situation where you sit down and say "damn, i wish there were rules for flargenblargh, the first captain of my chapter The Flying Hippos, but his special expertice and skills of fighting with combat knives cannot possibly be justified with the rules of any current HQ choises"...

it is at THAT point, and only THAT, you must start making rules. so take this Flargenblargh bloke... he is supossed to be a legend with combat knives, and so is his training drills with such, so obviously he must have an interesting take on this weapon in CC (maybe he have rending?), and must give some sort of bonus to CCW-wielding marines in the army (maybe in exchange for chapter tactics all CCW's gain rending?). other than that, he is pretty much just your everyday captain, maybe with +1 WS and +1A to justify his supposedly exeptional CC skills
The notion that nature can be calculated inevitably leads to the conclution that humans too can be reduced to basic mechanical parts... basic mechanical parts...

Got me in the mood to put up some SoB characters with a rather unique touch.

There's an older Special Character generator for 5th on the B&C that, in my opinion, works a bit better. It has pretty much everything you could need in it. Sadly, it's not bookmarked on this, but I should be able to get you the link when I get back to the internet access device which has it.

QUOTE (shortysl @ Jul 2 2012, 03:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It makes sense to me that if the Tactical Marine intercepts the bullet with his face then the Captain really shouldn't lose his Iron Halo. Not unless Captain and Battle Brother were hugging at the time, in which case it's: bullet shorts out shield and then kills Marine. Captain looks on shocked as Marine slides down his body, then sinks to his knees shouting "nooooooooooo" with his hands in the air.

On vacation.
