Innocence proves nothing...

I've ended up both being the Games Master for a Dark Heresy campaign and making most of the models for it too.

The campaign is set after the events of the 'Purge the Unclean' add-on books. The investigation for the Serrated Query continues. There will also be a tie-in with the Deathwatch. Before anyone yells "Emperor's holy undergarments! You can't have astartes in Dark Heresy!" - these are non-player characters, and are there for valid reasons (and there's going to be 3 at maximum).

As our campaign isn't going to happen until July at the earliest, this gives me plenty of time to build up characters.

So, allow me to introduce the first few - varying levels of WIP. Please note, all bases are just temporary, until my gaming group can finally agree on something...

The gun-slinger - Carmichael. This is an NPC (hence the hideously expensive loadout of 2 plasma pistols and sword...)

"Careful kid - those pistols have been shooting things since before you granddad was born..."

Whilst some members of the Ordo hereticus like to go about their business in secrecy, taking to the shadows - Carmichael prefers to go about things like a grox in a crockery-emporium. A former rogue-trader, specialising in electronics, Carmichael entered the service of the Ordo entirely by accident.

I'm thinking of giving him a blue or black jacket - not entirely sure. I'm well are that his eyes look ridiculous, but this is a WIP afterall :)

The witch - Carina (Player character)

"Something ain't right with that girl... No, no, don't look at her! They say that's how it starts..."

A pyromancer. Taken into service of the imperium at a young age due to her abilities. Pyromancy is hard to hide - especially when things (and people...) in the general area of Carina bust into flames - seemingly at random.

Personally, I want to convert this model - I don't like the fact it's stock. However, the player doesn't want me to, she likes the model as it is. Considering painting the sword in her left hand in flames. Still got a lot of painting to do on this one.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/witch.jpg

The Dishonoured and The Healer (far left, far right respectively) Both are (for the time being) player characters.

'Uncle' Thadus (left) - a former Naval hero, now in disgrace. Bionic left arm (not shown).

'Doc' (right) - imperial guard medic. Rescultped the torso to have webbing rather than body-armour. Don't really have much fluff for either of them yet.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011778-3.jpg

And finally for this WIP...

The 'magos'. NPC. ('Uncle' Thadus is on the left)

"Who, that? Nah, that's just 'magos' Corban. I know he's big. Yes, I know he looks like an astartes, but he isn't. I know he has an Iron Hand symbol on his right shoulder, but that's just his family crest. Look, honestly, he's just a cogboy. Albeit on the large side..."

A side character for halfway through the campaign, the 'magos' will be introducing Deathwatch to the game. He's going to be a guide and assistant. He's based on the techmarine art from the new Blood Angels codex by Adrian Smith (but I've yet to find a suitable head for him). Iron Hands techmarine from the Deathwatch, 'magos' is his nickname/poor covername whenever he's brought into non-DW missions.

Right, well that's all for now. Any suggestions/criticisms? (Both appreciated)

Cheers for looking!

Thanks for the comments guys!

I've had a major technical hiccup, in the sense that my laptop (my only connection with the outside world) died. So that would be why I didn't reply (I wasn't being rude!)

The upsight of this (ever the optimist) is that I've had more time to work on both player and non-player controlled characters.

Ok, the next 2 characters are seen in the same photograph below - both are still fairly WIP.

The Law Bringer - arbiter (player character) (Left)

"Violating imperial speed limits! How dare you! Taste las-bolt, you vile fiend! - Enforcer X (currently nameless, as I refuse to allow my players to call their character Sergeant "There's no kill like" Ovah-kill...)

The Noisy Killer - Assassin (allegedly...) (right)

"Well sir, looking at the murder scene, it looks like Lord Movern was killed by a sniper's bullet. But not before the sniper fired 7 rounds into the room, destroying several light fittings and 3 priceless bottles of amesec which started a small fire... - Crime scene investigator, reporting into the assassination of Hive Sibellus noble, Lord Movern by the individual known only as Dead Eye.

This is based on the character stats and a brief test play, where our 'assassin' couldn't hit anything. At all.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011783-2.jpg

The Heretek (thats a renegade mechanicus person)

Very WIP. Based (sort of) on the image of a heretek from the main DH rule book. There will eventually be a whole group of hereteks, but these aren't the 'main' enemy of the campaign.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011782-3.jpg

This is a Huberr of Londinium ( ;) ) pattern heavy stubber, which will be re-appearing (fitted to it's owner) very shortly.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/ugegun.jpg

So, the Brother techmarine Ullen - aka 'The Magos'.

The base is temporary, I just needed something to balance him on.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011785-1.jpg

Again, comments and criticisms will be welcomed

Cheers for looking!

Not a problem, brother. ^_^

Sounds a heck of alot like our 'assassin'. He was so hopeless I'm sorta letting him be tutored a little by a freaking Vindicare DMPC. ;)

This guy, I like. I'll be interested in seeing him completed.

Nice weapon. I wonder who owns it...?

Good stuff, brother. :)

Thanks for the kind words Olisredan.

I'm not entirely sure how to approach the heretek to be honest, I'm at a loss as to what head I should give him.

I'm tempted to try and give him a robe, but I'm not sure I can pull that off properly.

It's also nice to know that it isn't just my gaming group who have utterly useless characters. You know you've got a serious problem when your librarian-adept (that's literal book keeping librarian) can barely read but has brilliant fighting skills, whilst our babarian fighter from a feral world has such intelligence he read and write fluently in several languages... but has all the fighting skills of a kitten.

Ok, now back to business. 'Doc' has had a bit of a remake since I first posted him, care of some catachan arms, and has started to receive paint.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011780-Copy.jpg

I've added more detail to the back and harness of Brother Ullen. This is still drying and needs cleaning up (even though most of it will be hidden...)

The arms are not my work, they're from Kromtech (I think that's the name). I'm not sure if they're too 'orky' to use. However - I like them due to a passing description of techmarine Drumon in the last Ciaphas Cain book, which states his servo arms looked like they would be more suited bolted to a sentinel power-lifter than bolted to the back of a techmarine.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011777-Copy.jpg

And finally - something also from Kromtech. A pair of bionic legs (roughly terminator sized)

I'm not sure what to use them for. As bionics come under 3 classes (rubbish to brilliant), I was considering using them as a "poor man's new legs". Any suggestions?

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011783-Copy.jpg

Cheers again folks!

*edit - this is annoying. I had edited the photo of Ullen cropping it, so you couldn't see just how poor the back of his legs are. Yet, the photo I'm seeing here shows the poor GS-work, in all it's eye-bleeding glory...

It's Kromlech, brother, those bionic arms will be fine and the poor man's legs would be great on a Servitor-type of character or a chrono-gladiator. Hell, just calling them poor man's legs has already given them character - some poor schmuck who lost his legs now has to make do with these clumsy things. Mayba he's a shift boss at a mine or something? He needs something cheap and sturdy. :)

Once again, thank you brother!

I like the idea of a pit/factory worker based character, quite a lot. The campaign has a lot of potential trips through industrial areas, so I could create a character (enemy, ally, neutral, I'm not sure) based on that.

Failing that, my group have yet to actually finish making their characters, so I could always 'push' a character into this area (feral world techpriest anyone?)

I forgot to add some photos to my last update, so here they are (including a bit of experimenting with the legs)

So, the legs -

I can't help but think of a mechanical chicken when I see this. I might have to use a plastic astartes torso just for bulk, as currently, I think a normal human torso is a little on the small side...

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011782-4.jpg

Carmichael - I've started work on the jacket, and I'm happy I went with blue in the end.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011781-3.jpg

Uncle Thaddus test model. Honestly, I'm not overly happy with it, I like the bionic arm, but not the right (pointing) arm.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/Huberticus66/P1011779-3.jpg

And finally - Ullen. I've finished his left shoulder pad (the white at the bottom is blue-tac, holding it in place) - but, I don't know which head to select, as to be honest, I like all of them... Also, servo-arms. He'll only have 2, but I'm having difficulty selecting which 'claw' to put on the end of the arms. As I'm basing him on the techmarine from the BA codex, I like middle and right arm.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

Once more, any suggestions, comments, questions and criticisms are more than welcome.

I'd suggest sticking an Ork torso on the legs rather than a Catachan, as that's what they're designed for (Kromlech loves orks). From there you can modify the neck joint and such so that he seems more human. I would recommend a fair bit of tinkering to unorkify the look, though. (I'm not even sure this'd work, mind.) :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Not much work on this since my last update- it was my 19th on the 27th, and my flatmates took me out. They got me a massive 1/76 scale airfix boxset of the Somme offensive, so I've been busy building and painting MK I tanks. Boy, haven't done airfix since I was 13!

Anyway, I do have a small update.

I've been tinkering with Ullen, fixing up the greenstuff work (I'm a little hesitant to try and build the harness at the moment)

I'm quite happy with the death watch =I= symbol, took me a long to time sculpt it - it isn't the tidiest thing, but at least I can claim it as my own work ^_^

The right arm isn't finished, but I thought I'd tac it in place just to give an impression of what he should look like when finished.

That's all for now folks.

Cheers for visiting - any criticism or suggestions?

The plasma pistol needs removing and realigning, I think. At the moment it's resting at an angle lower down than it naturally should. Is the fist uneven? If it is you might need to even it out some.

Cheers Oli, I noticed that after I posted the photo - but, it was only held in place by blu-tac.

Well, progress.

You may have noticed the change in sub-title.

Ullen is about 60% done, and has changed. He's now a member of the Reclaimers chapter, rather than the Iron Hands (however, if you've read about them in The Emperor's Finest, you may have noticed that they sound like a potential, fleet-based Iron Hands successor...)

For those of you who don't know, Sandy Mitchell has a brilliant sense of humour. Mainly, having a space marine chapter based on cult 70's British children's TV show the Wombles.

AFAIK, no-one has painted a reclaimer yet, so this is possibly a first (google showed nothing). The left shoulder is a Deathwatch pad. The right is currently blank

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/ullen.jpg

I'm working on the harness - at the moment, it only has 1 servo arm. I'm not sure whether to leave it as is, or add a flamer and plasma-cutter. I'd like to add the other two, but I'm not entirely sure as to whether it would work or not. I am also considering shifting this arm to the right hand side of the harness, leaving the middle of the pack blank.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/techmarine.jpg

And here, we have a scale shot, with our blind marksman.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/scale.jpg

And just so this isn't all about our heroes, I've gotten some work on the villains.

Posted here are 3 of the enemies the group will be fighting - to the left, a pyromancer, minus legs. The heretek will have a servo-skull as his head, when I find an appropriate skull.

http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz286/huberticus/P1011801.jpg

How is everything looking? Do my ideas make sense?

Criticism, questions and comments wanted.

Cheers!

Actually all the FF 40k RPG series are designed to allow you to bring characters between the various games, so long as you make the appropriate conversions for expierence and such. I mean my group has a Rogue Trader team working along side Rogue Astartes. So... yeah it can be done.

Nice job on the models btw. What model did you use for Carmichael? I like it and think the Rogue trader of our group would absolutely cream himself if I show up with that figure as a base for his character.

What model did you use for Carmichael?

It's Kal Jericho. You can get him from the GW website at, what, twelve quid or so? (Plus his sidekick Scabbs, of course. :P)

Edit - Whoops, you're not from Blighty! It's twenty two bucks from the American version of the site. :)
