LPC WIP - Deathwing Command Squad

CAM77

Recommended Posts

Well, I've been meaning to make something more impressive to use as my deathwing command squad other than standard terminator models, and I started on this project over six months ago. Unfortunately due to getting busy, (and being an extremely slow painter :) ), I have only completed two of the five models for the command squad. I figured the LPC would be good motivation to finally get these guys finished, and give Belial the bodyguard he deserves! The inspiration for these guys comes from a few places, obviously the lion theme is from our primarch, but I also wanted to capture a bit of the look of the WFB White Lions models, and used some bits from them as well.

The bits come from the following sources: Assault Terminators, Tactical Terminators, Chaos Terminators, Chaos Lord, High Elf Chariot, Grey Knights Terminators, Forgeworld Astral Claws shoulder pads, Sanguinary Guard, Space Wolves Terminators, Dark Angel Upgrade Sprues.... and probably a couple other places I'm forgetting.

Here is a sample of the color scheme they are using, I apologize for the poor camera, and my rudimentary painting skills.

LION GUARD:

You can get a glimpse of some of the diverse bits I used here

and the back

So that is the basic scheme. I spent the weekend mashing together the apothecary and sergeant, and have begun work on the standard bearer. I decided mid way through that I would give these guys axe type weapons instead of thunder hammers since it fits the theme better, and to me, looks much more menacing. I'll still end up playing them as TH/SS, but once I tried out the axe on one of them, it just looked so cool that I decided to go with them. So the apothecary and sergeant get axes, and I now have more on the way from ebay to replace the hammers on the two original squad members above.

Sergeant

Together with their brethren.

Standard bearer will be the next to get put together, the I will begin painting using the same basic scheme as the two at the top. So that is my project for the LPC, I hope you all enjoy the pics, I'll keep them updated as I go, and please leave tips and comments (I can use them, I'm still a bit of a novice painter / modeler).

Well CAM77, suffice to say they look awesome! The whole squad once finished would be truly unique! I see you are using bits from the BAs, GKs and SWs sprue but what'd you use for the Lion bitz? Is it High Elvish stuff I am detecting there - or not?

It's great you joined the LPC! The DAs wil pull this through!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Semper, yes that is High Elvish you detect. :D The lion head on the sergeant's back banner as well as the small lion pelts on the others all come from the High Elf Chariot kit. The shoulder pads with the lion head on them are the forge world Astral Claws terminator pads (but only the sergeant pad has the lion... so it took me quite a while to assemble the pads I needed, and I finally ended up ordering 2 sets of the pads from FW just for that one! So if anyone needs regular Astral Claws terminator pads... well I have a few spares lol!) The axes are the Glaive Encarmine ones from the Sanguinary Guard, but I thought that they kind of completed the white lion vibe.

Mercy, not sure what a "dip" is heh... as I admitted I'm still a bit of a novice :P . But what I did do on these was pretty simple:

-put down the basic color -scab red for the cloth, bleached bone on the fur and skulls, and boltgun metal for the gold areas

-heavy washes of badab black over the red, and gryphone sepia over the gold and fur parts

-light dry brushes of the original colors back over the wash (except the gold which got a very light brush of burnished gold on the high areas)

-slight highlighting on some areas with even lighter colors, though not much

-used a sponge with boltgun metal to do the weathering on the armor / shield edges, etc.

A pretty simple method, but it is simple enough for my skill level, although even with such a simple technique it still takes me quite a while to get stuff painted. I will hopefully have time today and tomorrow to get the standard bearer together and will update when I do.

These look great brother, I'm loving the conversions and the colour scheme is really striking!

Well done on joining the LPC, taking up the plight of the Dark Angels, is the purest act a brother can commit!

Wonderful kitbashing CAM77. Your gold looks great. Boltgun metal as a base you say? I can see myself doing some re-painting...

Thanks for comments, it really helps motivate me to get these guys done! As for the gold, yep, base is boltgun metal. After that it is quite easy, just keep washing it with gryphone sepia until it is the desired darkness (I let mine get almost bronze looking for a nice subdued look), then a very, very light drybrush of burnished gold on the raised areas. Quickest and easiest way to get a nice subdued gold that I've found.

Got the deathwing company standard bearer put together today. The hammer is there temporarily until my axes arrive from ebay. I'll let the greenstuff set overnight and get primer on these guys tomorrow, and who knows, maybe a little actual paint :D

Isiah, I haven't really decided on bases yet, and to tell the truth I don't have a lot of basing experience, I mainly just put down some sand and do some drybrushing. For these guys though, I think I want something a little more detailed. The general terrain that the rest of my army is on is desert-like, so I'll probably continue with that theme but I could use anyone's advice on creating good looking desert bases.

Looks excellent! I escpecially like the 1st Legion brass bit! On creating desert bases I'd suggest keep it simple: just brown flock, a couple of washes and and earth-like color on top. Patches of dry greens would also look nice (like gretchin green)... If you want to go for the cracked earth effect then you might consider using green stuff for this. Of course you can buy desert bases but it is somewhat a more expensive option...

Wasn't quite happy with the standard bearer. Aside from the standard he didn't really stand out too much from the regular members of the squad, so I made some small changes that hopefully are improvements. I re-positioned his arm to make him look a bit more active, and added a pair of decorative combat blades.

Now its time for some primer.

A small progress update:

Axes arrived from ebay and are ready to replace the hammers. I have most of the base colors on the models now and will soon move on to washing, drybrushing and highlighting.

It might seem like I'm painting slowly, but for me this is really fast! :)

Very impressive stuff there! There is something very threatening, very ominous about your termies. It's probably the the hooded marine helmets with the Sang Guard chest plates... dunno. If you are to produce such great minis then, by all means, take your time! Just make sure you are done by end of March! :)

Thanks for the comments guys, they are great motivation! Grim, glad you like the empire general standard, I think it is a great model for DA players to own, because as we know, the standard fits nicely for a DW standard, but there is also a cool raven that I'll probably end up using on a ravenwing sergeant or something.

Finished! I'm pretty happy with how these guys turned out, it was the first time I had tried doing bases like this, I think they ended up ok, thanks for the advice! Thanks everyone for the encouragement, it really helped me get these guys done quickly (for me)! I apologize in advance for the poor quality of the pics, I just was using my phone camera and I just couldn't get the lighting right. Here they are:

Sergeant - I added a bit of damage to his shield, I was trying to make it look like he blocked a power claw or something...

Apothecary

Full Squad

Again, thanks everyone for the great feedback and encouragement, I'm happy I was able to contribute at least a small bit to the LPC on behalf of the 1st Legion! Hope you guys enjoy the pics, I certainly enjoyed painting these guys!

The segeant's shield speaks tons for your skill mate! It tells a story in itself! And the free-hand letterring on the Standard... OMG!

Congrats on completing your vow so early - they look amazing! well done!
