LPC WIP thread, 1 DW terminator (only).

All right, here we go.

After some hard thinking I've decided to help my brothers out. I've red and enjoyed (more than) enough here, and used some articles and tactics too (although I havent played a game this edition  ).

So, it's time to do something back. I hope we win this, and I'd be glad if I can make that difference. Shoulder the burden, do your part, bla bla...

I have ordered some bases some time ago and the idea was to get a decent DW squad going. Times change, ideas too. I have painted some (old, plastic) terminators in the mean time, coloured like the Angels of Redemption.

When they came out I bought a few boxes of veterans, wanting to make a small army of Guardians of the Covenant. I still want that, though. 1 squad is in 'basic' colours, the other is primed black.

*sigh*

They are all shelved, packed, boxed, etc. Real life happend, and is still.

I have not lost my desire to paint though, and I do like to read these forums (well, DA, Liber, and Amicus to be exact). I do paint the occasional mini though, mainly Bloodbowl related.

Time is looking better though, and I should be able to finish 'stuff' soon (thesis). Painting a mini now and then IS relaxing, so why not use that as an excuse to paint a Death Wing Terminator for the LPC? :)

So, there you have it. Resin street-cobble base, and an old, multipart plastic terminator. All painted in glorious Deathwing colours in table top quality.

Paint/build plan:

Assemble, get rid of moldlines.

Undercoat white.

Generous applying of wonderwash ehm... Devlan mud.

Drybrush with Vallejo Model Colour (VMC) pale sand (broken white, more yellowish then bleached bone).

Pick out highlights with the same colour.

Blend white/pale sand for final highlights.

Paint gun 'undercoat' red (forgot the name).

Repaint that with a better red.

Everything that needs to be metal, paint it black.

Lightly paint those areas boltgu metal.

Apply wash (smoke or devlan mud) to the metal, if needed.

Finish base.

Cheers & thanks for reading,

F&S.

p.s. I will take some pictures now and then and post them.

I might even speed up the proces IF I paint another terminator. Shortcuts ahoy! :(

Allright, undercoated 5 termies and a belial I had laying around in white, and slapped a good dose of brown ink on them.

I am aiming/trying to follow this codex unforgiven method, but will change it to my taste and paints available.

1st termie has a decent drybrush of Pale Sand, but: should I paint the eagle on it's chest red, or green? And the gun, red, green or black?

I am aiming for a classic look, but cant really find _the_ classic example.

Anyone out here with an older codex?

I don't have it in front of me but, if memory serves, the chest eagles and the strom bolter casings were green... However I've seen DW with red detail and they look awesome too! Black is a bit more sombre but it can project a no-nonsense, business-like attitude... And it would be less common too. Go for black!

Look forward to see pics :P *after work hours because they are blocked*

And a picture:

Needs another laye of paint, and then I can start filling in the blocks (i.e. gun, cheast eagle, crux, etc.).

edit in RL it's a bit lighter...well, quite some bit. Between beige and white, actually.

Looking good. Between beige and white is about right in my opinion.

Anyone out here with an older codex?

The original Deathwing on the cover of the Space Hulk expansion had bare metal weapons and gold chest eagles. The models in Codex: Angels of Death had hideous green wings and red swords on their chests and green weapon casings. I can take some lo-fi photos with my phone if you like.

Personally I favour gold ornamentation - they are the 1st company of the 1st chapter of the 1st legion, the elite of the elite - and dark red weapon casings that match the rest of my army. I'd be wary of red on the chest. My first Deathwing models were a stark white with bright red trim and too much red and white makes them look like medics!

Nice progress.

And er.... just to say that everyone knows that 'classic' Deathwing were white :P.

Hmm, yeah,... was ore thinking about the one in the previous dex though. And, werent they black to begin with..? ;)

More progress:

White is done, as far as I am concerned. Should have done the chest eagle sooner, too; it's easier to get it right or cover up mistakes...

Chest eagle needs a lighter shade of green, bolter eeds black and boltung metal. Eyes need another layer of red.

Base needs to be done, too (painted that is).

I even tried some freehand; look, a broken sword!

I aim for tabletop 'quality', so I am more or less satisfied so far.

edit: also noticed that my old 2 MP camera isnt the best anymore for this. It looks better IRL, honest..!

Ah, yes black, that's 'classic' classic .

Nice model Flint&Steel, and cool resin bases too.

I'm in luck. My youngest is having a small fever. Not too serious, but enough to keep him home. Gallantly, I decided I should stay also (it's easier for me to call in 'sick' than my wife).

It gives me the opportunity to do some typing, some 'home'work and also to make some progress with the mini. Dont tell the wife though :D !!

Anyway:

I'm reluctant to finish the deathwing emblem on his shoulder.

First I thought the sword was too big, but I've seen the other terminators and shoulderpads... It should work.

There IS some highlighting on the base. It's too sublte though. Maybe it will get a bigger highlight, but I think I'd rather see how it will look on a whole squad before I will do that.

The green is a tad lighter than DA green, I like it. I've put orkhide shade as a first layer, after that I painted it Vallejo Model Colour *looks frantically for his small black book* german green,... something.

When the whole mini is done I will put up a list of paints, and steps.

Enjoy!

edit: it's always nice to see the model bigger, on a screen, than it is in real life. from a normal gaming distance it looks decent enough. Here, on my screen on the B&C, it looks kinda sloppy... Ah well.

And I tried to use natural light here, but the model looks different IRL. Another 'ah well'. ^_^

Completed! :)

Granted, one side of the deathwing sign is a tad 'thick', but it was easier then I thought. Will try it again for sure!

The base got a better highlight too, mixed some basalt grey with some foundation white (both VMColours) I had. Not too sure if it shows up in the picture.

Anyway:

Tried to make some photos from a bit further away. I dont see the joy of showing THIS model with 1.5 times it's normal size... :D.

edit: didnt work. Still, it's tabletop-quality, more or less.

Hope you enjoy, and take care all!

I will of course stick around and 'help' others finish their vows too.

They are sold at the local model/train shop.

I like them a lot. There a huuuge range of greens and greys... who needs mixing anyway? Just buy the main colour and 1 'shadow' and 1 highlight and you are set!
