I know exactly how you feel! :(

This project has opened a real can of worms.

The conversion looks ace! how did you do the "4"? is it green stuff or something more esoteric?

Actually, its just grey stuff (ProCreate). I quite enjoy sculpting, it helps me maintain my dexterity.

MadDoc, that Master is incredible.

I particularily love the attention to detail in your honour marking and the pattern around the hood, as well as the skin tones.

Great job and look forward to seeing more.

High praise indeed, given the source. Thank you.

I've been extremely impressed by your work in your No Weapon So Savage thread.

Edit - A question, where did you get the sword you've used on your excellent Brother Atropos conversion? I need to source some swords for addition to command models (I'm considering converting the larger sheathed swords from the Catachan Command Squad for use on my Deathwing) and that looks like a good start.

Would you mind if I shamelessly 'borrowed' your Terror-marking/Deathmask idea? I'll probably scratch build/sculpt the skull, but your Atropos is quite an inspiring model.

I'm thinking I might start on my Champion/Paladin model and give him a Champion's Mantle (big Chaotic beasty hide draped over his power plant, an honour taken from the reliquaries of the Reclusiam), older style (maybe Mk IV) armour, a mail tabard, a big hand and half blade and a bespoke combat shield. I'm thinking a classical dueling stance, maybe a withheld en garde position... Now look what you've gone and done Candleshoes, inspired me. :D

Your thread is making me want to go back and 'Grim Darken' some of my old models (my models are generally pretty Grim Dark already, but I can always make some of them even more so).

And here's me thinking the "mantle" was either metaphorical or ceremonial... Look fwd to see said beasty  not to mention the Champion in his shiny Mk4!

@Candleshoes - Thank you. So, the BA Death Company boxset? Now I know. ;)

@Candleshoes & @Captain Semper - For the Mantle I'm thinking scaled underskin with a furred crest/top layer punctured by horns/spines (Sorry, not a very good description).

Thats a really great company master, congrats on finishing your LPC, the banner is looking really great, is this an add on to the LPC or just something to make your company master look all the better.

Great Stuff!

Thank you. The banner is just a start to giving the Master a suitable Command Squad, its too late to add it to my Challenge, which is probably just as well since this Command Squad will entail a fair bit of sculpted detailing.

I really shouldn't keep you waiting too long then... ;)

Heres the initial work on the Paladin Champion's Mk IV plate...

Note the sculpted Mk IV detailing...

Note the hardedged Mk IV style cod piece (A in the pic) which will be completely hidden behind the mail tabard I plan on adding, all of which I only realised after I'd finished sculpting it. :o Whoops... :(

First-off you have excellent sculpting skills (not to mention a (un)healthy attention to detail). Now that this is out of the way :D I'm eager to see this guy done! Are you going to sculpt robes on the torso too? and then add the mantle? Or the mantle will cover enough of the torso to not require top robes? Also the mail tabard is a cool idea so don't be too sad for covering your work. I'll tell you what, leave the mini without the mail tabard until you fully put it together, then look if you really want to cover his front. Let it be a last minute choice - and maybe "murder your darlings" might come into play?

In any case I bet the focus would be the mantle on this guy so... yeah. Look fwd for more!

Isn't that always the way? At least we know it's there, even if we can't see it!

I went to such great pains making sure the edges were even and perfectly smooth too... *sigh*

Love the work on your MKIV, great results with the line edges.

Thank you.

:D Who me...? ;)

Yes.

and then add the mantle?

Yes. Although, the bulk of the mantle will be over the power plant (another scratchbuilt piece which will be largely obscured -_- ) with only a single leg/arm/limb draping over the right shoulder (at least thats the current plan).

Or the mantle will cover enough of the torso to not require top robes?

It will cover part of the front but not enough for me to avoid adding robes to the front.

I suspect you may well be right. Cheers.

So another little update. Heres the progress on Brother Amael, Paladin Champion of the 4th...

First, some more WIP shots of his Mk IV plate as it developed...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000757_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000761_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000762_close.jpg

...and the start of the upper robes...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000767_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000768_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000769_close.jpg

On a side note, I was looking through one of my bitsboxes and I came across a sword I'd made out of sprue for an earlier (now abandoned) project. My thinking is perhaps it could be repurposed for Amael.

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000764_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000766_close.jpg

What do you guys think? Should I use it or make something new from scratch?

Note - whatever sword I end up using, the blade will be painted to look like highly polished steel.

Remember what I said about your sculpting? It still stands! :D

Seriously, this is excellent stuff! This mini is coming to life step-by-step!

Now regarding the sword. [personal taste mode] This looks very nice but also something a BT Champion would wield. In other words, it's kind of generic. Nice, mind you but it doesn't say Dark Angels. The "signature" sword has an angular tip (like the Termie sword in the Veterans upgrade box or the Sergeant's swords in the RW upgrade box). The metal Master mini (the one with the elaborate helmet and same pose to yours) also has a similar sword design. Obviously the old Special Character metals do not share this design but still, I find it kind of unique to the DAs. So my suggestion would be go for the angular sword - and (big departure here) keep it dark. Like obsidian black with some sharp edge highlight of jade or such...[/personal taste mode]

Having said that, I need to stress this is an idea in my head and the execution is all that matters. Go with what you feel more confident about. I just like my DAs, well, dark and not too shiny... :P

Yes MadDoc, that is fantastic sculpting... now cast the thing and send me a copy.

The sword works for me, however if it could be given some DA flair, that would be a nice touch. I could see replacing the cross guard with wings or something along those lines.

EDIT: Eeek double post...

Anywho, it could be as simple as adding wings, like so. I think small wings can be clipped form somehing from the DA or RW sprue.

And for further inspiration, there is this. The scale is probably off, so that DA icon will be too big (considering this is supposed to represent the massive Lion's sword) but it might give you an idea for the pommel?

That sword, the cabling and the right side work on the robe are pro, I literally smiled at work when I saw it. Amazing stuff.

On the sword, I agree with what Captain Semper said, on its own, it looks very Black Templarish. If you were going to use it, deffinetly think about adding some DA bits to replace the crossguard or the pommel.

What were you thinking in terms of pose for him? Will he hold the sword, or will it be upside down, with his hand on it at rest? I know the body is walking forward, I am very curious with what you have planned.

Awesome job on the Company Master and the sculpting on your champion, Maddoc! I've wanted some robed Mk4 armor for a while and bought some plasticard and wire to try and make some because I seriously doubt I could get the great results you have with Green Stuff.

As far as the sword, it does definitely appear more Templarish in styling, but then again, knight vs knight, I think you could definitely use it for the champion because it seems more "old school". That said, I agree with CPT Semper that if you were inclined, a more DA-styled sword (I'd actually put a vote in for the one the robed DA with the bolt pistol has in the pic on one of the last two or three pages of the 3rd Ed DA Codex) might make him more visually similar to our current weapon stylings with the flared blade tip.

Thank you all for the kind words. I try my best.

Sorry, perhaps I was abit unclear when I said repurposed, I didn't mean used 'as is' I meant repurposed and modified (funny you guys should say its BT like as its a 1:1 plastic reproduction of the Ltd Edition BT EC's sword :ermm:).

Heres a very rough digital mock up of how I'm planning to pose his arms (somewhat reminiscent of Ezekiel's pose), plus a rough idea of some of the possible modifications I have in mind for the sword...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/ArmsRough.jpg

Sword held in a withheld/rearguard en garde (I'm sure I mentioned this earlier <_<), from where he can perform either a lateral slash or (more likely) a raising bisecting slice (the body I've based him on conveniently has the stepping foot placed so that he looks poised to be about to do just that  ).

@Captain Semper - I reserve obsidian (looking) blades for proper IC members, as a blade with any descernable obsidian content is likely one of the Heavenfall blades and as such incredibly rare and reserved for members of the Chapter command.

As an aside I have an idea for the squad Sergeant (not that CS have a specific Sergeant), he'll be called Gazardiel (Angel of New Beginnings) and be wielding twin power swords... remind you guys of anyone?

That's certainly the way to go! Excellent pose too!

I agree with your point on obsidian blades. Reserve them for the elite -it makes a clear reference to Heavenfall blades and thus avoiding confusion. However I'd still go for dark metals rather than the shiny ones! As I said it's personal taste!

Can't wait to see your final take - whatever it is

I puck of the Dark Angels hereby give my blessing for this project to proceed with one expectation:

Dude you've seriously gotta make a tutorial for sculpting those swords. I'm trying to set my whole army up with those types of swords but obviously I can't afford to buy all of them and I've been looking for a tutorial to sculpt them.

Actually, its just carved from sprue.

I like the sword's tip. It screams 'DA' <_< But the pointed extrusions near the hilt make it look a bit chaosy possibly??.

The DA sprues have 2 swords that already have that form (the Deathwing/Terminator power sword arm and one of the power sword arms on the RW/Vehicle sprue (the one thats supposed to be used as the Ravensword for the plastic MotRW LS)).

Another small update. The arms are posed and awaiting the hands & sword, shoulder pads are started. I should probably bite the bullet and start on the power plant as well...

So here he is...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000770_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000771_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000772_close.jpg

Hopefully you can make out the extended couters, added protection for the vulnerable elbow joints, a nice knightly touch I thought.

And here is the initial work on his pads...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000773_close.jpg

Still need to add the wings on the Chapter Icon and detailing on both pads (braiding, icons and other assorted gewgaws).

I intend to add a collection of skulls hung at his belt (marked with carved IV in their foreheads) and then theres the mantle (power plant first though *slaps self on wrist*).

So thats the current state of play, not sure how I feel about how he's turning out... ;)
