LPC 2012 - New oath! SCOUT ARMY WIP

The Shadow Guard

Recommended Posts

The LPC 2011 started with a big bang for me. After a hiatus of nearly seven years I was in to making models again and after a space of four years updating my website to show off my progress. I made some significant gain in terms of doing greenstuff sculpting and using washes both for the first time in my entire life. The LPC 2011 aim was very ambitious trying to complete a 1500 point Deathwing Army of 25 individually posed and sculpted DW terminators. Needless to say i didn't finish in time and in fact only struggled through for a month of so after the end date before it stalled. However i don't consider it a failure as it made me achieve things that I would not have if not for the almighty deadline.

So in 2012, at the eleventh hour, another vow is added to the dark Angels forum. This time a very humble single squad of five scouts. :(

"I, Shadowguard of the Dark Angels Forum, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least a single squad of fiveDark Angel Scouts on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done."

A personal goal would be to make further progress and possibly also complete the 2011 vow!

Hey Gilly, I'm a venerable dreadnought am I? ;) ;) I guess I have been hibernating from the hobby for a few years....

GMB: Great honour man, I seeing that model might just stimulate me to formally write up the backgorund story for my chapter.

As for progress, it will only be posisble during the weekends so i'm loking forward to Saturday! ;) I have to say that the level of activity for theis LPC in the DA Forum is looking extremely healthy, no doubt a lot is due to Captain Sempers sermons!! :P

So Shadow Guard, how are the new recruits coming along? Any progress you are keeping from us? (in true DA style :))

BTW do you think the standard marines' bare heads would look out of place/scale for the scouts or are they a valid alternative? I'm not particularly fond of the scout heads but I also dislike all the helmeted alternatives out there and I've seen quite a few - difficult customer, I know... For some reason scouts should be un-helmeted in my mind. So standard marine heads then? They might look a bit on the older side but hey, scouts can be as old as 50 before becoming Marines... Unless they look really funny, like wrong scale or something.

About the heads, I have a box of Cadians and catachans in pastic to support my "future" scout army project. The catachan's bare heads are great for scouts. Bare heads of Sm, especially the sergeants are in scale too.:P

Well chaps, in true venerable dread style, I have been hibernating. Actually more like procrastinating because Jan-Feb in real life is unfortunately the busiest time of the year for me and to add i am now doing a university course (master's) online etc... kills spare time.

Anyway, after six weeks of procrastination I manage to do 3-4 hours of work last night and this morning with my greenstuff. This is my second attempt at using Greenstuff, the first being my DW LPC 2011 project that remains stalled. <_<

I wanted the effect of scouts rising up out of cover firing, so kept the cloaks all the way down touching the ground. I will hopefully add some foliage to the foreground and then spary them and get on with the paitning.

Will appreciate any comments or criticisms..... :P

I haven't driled out the barrels as yet and also a little more filing of the flashing on the scout heads is needed.

Yeah, they look stealthy alright! What are you gonna do with the cloaks? Cammo or black (night infiltration kind of...)? The foliage you mention points to the former, but black look more ominous and stealthy imo.

Would you say you are 20% there?

Thanks for the scout heads thing. As it happens I have a box of Catachans stand by so I might use it! :cuss

I think the cloaks will be green with a camo pattern....

The IG plastics are a great boon to add to the scouts. In the hurry to get moving on the cloaks I completely forgot to use the catachan heads amongst these five scouts. Unfortunately the crouching pose is just too small for scout upper bodies. catachan lower torsoes are otherwise a good match as are some of the arms.

That's the advantage of modelling greenstuff cloaks, they cover a lot of the detail. The second scout actually has a cadian right arm from shoulder to forearm.. a bit udnersized but covered by the cloak... :)

I would call that 10% complete at max...considering that I haven't even base coated it and it is indeed a painting contest!! :P

Well I have made some progress, slowly but steadily, just 10-15mins early in the morning.... :) Given the fact that Captain Semper suggested that my unpainted green stuffed models might be considered to be 20% complete I thouhgt I'd start from there!!

Black Undercoat: 21% Complete

http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/Temp_LPC_Scout_Squad_Phase_02_01.jpg

Skull White for the Tunics: 22% complete

http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/Temp_LPC_Scout_Squad_Phase_03_01.jpg

Camouflage Patterns Commenced: 25% complete

I wanted to create a distinct camouflage pattern that worked for the models while highlighting their features, looked practical but also produced the effect on fitting in with the surroundings. I decided to go with a bleached bone tunic with spotty brown and green camouflage for the tunics. I didn't want to do the same for the camo cloaks as it would make the models too bright. So i started with a Scorched earth under coat on hich i will add streaky multi coloured camouflage which will be a lot darker than the tunic colours.

Well that's that for the moment.

The body armour, gloves and perhaps the boots will be Dark Angels Green as will the gun casing. I still need to drill out the barrels, add two tiny bits of GS extension to two of the scouts' left wrists, and then snakebite leather to the pouches and holsters. Once the camo patterns are done both the tunics and the camo cloaks will get a couple of washes to dull them down. faces will be last!

Well, snails pace but I think I will make it in time....

I would appreciate any insights in to any mistakes i've made and welcome criticisms... :)

I see the Aussie style of camo in full effect. A welcome change to the tiger stripe style. The washes should help as you said to tone them down. The question I have is are you planning to use a paint to wash them or an ink. Thin down paints end up flat where some inks tend to be glossy. And then matte varnish later. I only ask because of the time issue.

Thanks GMB. I was planning on using Devlan Mud wash rather than a ink. I agree the inks are likely to make it glossy... I might even use the Devlan Mud and a black wash...

The camo cloak camouflage i hope to try something different.... very short streaks.. not sur ehow it'll go but I should be able to do it either tonight or on the weekend.

As for the Aussie style.... I think my memory stretches back to WWII and the fallschirmjager tunics.... and later the Waffen SS camo schemes... and yes the Ausiie ones too!

Well the Ven Dread is really up to speed now - I can see the smoke coming out of your back exhausts! :D

Like the camo, I thought it was a WWII German reference (I'm unfamiliar with Aussie camo I'm afraid) although the background fabric color is of a considerably lighter shade... They certainly look unique and rightly an Elite's choice! ;)

Looks good SG! Now you are 25% there, and the weekend is just around the corner! I challenge you to go 75% there in this weekend alone! Will you take up this challenge? hahahahaha!!!

You never know!!! ;)

By the way, do we need to plop a second WIP photo in the PCA LPC thread as part of the progress report or is the final photo considered the the second? I'll wait till i crawl past 50%

Look, you have tons of pics in this thread - so you really don't need to post anything to the PCA LPC thread! All the evidence of progress is included here! So just remember to declare your vow finished (once it is finished of course ;)) and add the link to your WIP thread (i.e. this one) in a separate post in the PCA LPC thread and you're done! This way you'll alert the (other) mods, admins, cedos etc :D to the fact you're finished and they can check your progress easily!
