I, Uhr of the Dark Angels, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least one Dreadnought on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

Back to the vow...

I don't have photos before I primed the Dreadnought; but I have one photo when I made a modification on the sarcophagus; and it was "partially" primed.
I had removed the original sarcophagus by cutting it out, and I put the Dark Angels one (from the Ravenwing upgrade sprue); since it was an AoBR Dreadnought.
I magnetised its weapons/arms, and also added few bits here and there to make it more to my liking.

Little update...
Finished "first hand" on main metallic parts with Boltgun Metal; now I'll do other metallic parts, like decorations and such, with Shining Gold and Mithril Silver...

Excellent stuff Uhr! Looks really good!

Keep up this pace and you'll be done in no time - and have a brand new dread in the end of the day too! Scary thought, no?

We are keeping track of the progress in the LPC Phase II thread - so feel free to check it out to se the overall progress of the DAs and inform people on your completion rate! ;)

Another small update...
I finished with metallic parts, though I will get back on 'em later to make corrections, touch-ups, etc.
Next step will be painting Dreadnought main casing, and armour platings into Dark Angels Green (although I already tried a bit on the arms)...

Update...

I added first "rough" coat of Dark Angels Green on the Dreadnought, and touched up red bits (like sensor lenses, purity seals, etc.) with Blood Red...

I made a base, this morning, but since my cellphone (now You know why the quality of pictures is not better) was recharging I forgot to take WIP pictures.

I really like what you've done there Uhr! Very clean. I'd use some Badab Black on the white metal areas to make the recesses more pronounced. The base is excellent! Keep up!

Thanks! Yes, Dreadnoughts are among my favourites too.

Thank You! I usually apply washes in later stages; so it wont be this clean, and "two-dimensional". For the vow I'll probably stop after the first wash phase; it will be table-top quality, and will satisfy all criteria of being finished.
But after I will apply gloss varnish so I can use transfers, and then I'll do some weathering and use some pigments, and after that I'll gloss varnish it again, and finish it with matte varnish to remove the shine... I am in dilemma of doing weathering to the point of damage, and/or making some battle damage on the Dreadnought. I guess it would look more realistic, but usually I chose rather well-maintained machines for my Dark Angels, since Imperium consider Adeptus Mechanicus machines as relics; and I am sure that Techmarines and Servitors of the Chapter take good care of "our" Armoury, especially of our ancient heroes encased in adamatum sarcophagi of Dreadnoughts.

OK, great strategy there! ;) you kind of lost me there with the gloss and some more gloss and then matte... You obviously have a level of painting way ahead of mine! :)

Regarding your theory on weathering, I fully agree! Unless your model represents the minute the battle finished then I'd say keep weathering at a minimum. The DAs take good care of their brothers clad in dreadnought armor! (tactical or otherwise ).

Putting gloss varnish before and after applying decals prevents "silvering" of the decal. Matte is used just to remove the shine; unless You wish that model looks like a porcelain figurine; heh...
My level of PAINting is ahead of Yours only in matter of slowness; for that matter I think I have the highest level in the world. :tu:

Update:

I am more or less done with the first part of the Dreadnought; Dark Angels Green was applied in few layers; metallics also. Now I will glue parts together, put it on the base, and make corrections, touch-ups, and "last-moment" changes (if any). Then I'll add "shades" and maybe some weathering... I guess it will be then "tabletop quality" and enough for the vow completion. But I'll continue with the Dreadnought later by giving it a coat of gloss varnish, decals, weathering (depends on weathering in previous stages), another gloss varnish layer to protect decals and seal the Dreadnought; and finally matte varnish to remove the shine.

I will be on a trip for the weekend, so I won't be able to work on the vow (shame, cause I am really in the mood); but I'll get back to it on Monday...

Take care Brothers, and have a nice (and productive) weekend!

That's a very nicely cleanly painted dread - well above 'tabletop quality' I'd say :tu:.

I apologize Brothers for not updating vow progress sooner, but I was really busy...

Update:

I had a problem with a base, since in the moment of inspiration I finished it without thinking of the Dreadnought that will come on it; so it was standing a bit weird being on uneven ground, parts of the Dreadnought "foot" would not stand fully on the ground. Dreadnought should be heavy, and I imagine it would sink a bit into most of the ground types; so I had to do something about it. I added more sand and rubble, so Dreadnought "feet" would have more firm contact, and I had to repaint new parts to match the old.

Base:

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Then I glued Dreadnought on the base, and retouched some parts with paint and corrected some mistakes...

Posted Image

Finally, I glued remaining parts on the "body" that I finished today (arms/weapons still need some details). After that I'll give it a black wash to add the needed depth...

Looks great! in fact you did an excellent job with the legs - it looks as it should. It's a very tidy job overall and I like the use of gold - very effective! And you've done the arms too (+/- some details)? Great progress mate! when the time for washing comes, maybe you'll consider doing the gold areas with Ogryn Flesh? I find it works well to give a warm glow reminiscent of real gold...

How much would you say is done? If most of the hands are done I'd say 80%? Dunno -you tell me... :)

Thank You Captain Semper!

Yes, Arms/Weapons are almost done...

Regarding Ogryn Flesh wash for gold, it is a great idea, but since I didn't used it on other models, I might skip it, so not to break "uniform" scheme, though I'll keep this tip in mind for future; thanks. On my Dark Angels I use gold detailing on Sergeants, Veterans in general (Dreadnoughts are in this group also), and high ranking positions (Grand Masters, Librarians, Chaplains)...

Overall vow progress; I'd say cca 75%... I told You I am slow... :)

Bests!
