LPC Vow Tactical Squad-Complete

So I was a bit hasty in making my erm, to borrow a term from the luna wolves HH novel, Oath of Moment.

I had added a full squad of marines in Iron Armor, complete with Phobus pattern boltguns, to my FLGSs "imminent" FW order, and vowed to paint them for the LPC...and then they put off the order indefinitely. My plea to the LPC organizers to change my vow to the pair of Ravenwing typhoons that have been gracing my painting table in their "naked but for primer, and assembled just far enough to be legal for Ard Boyz because I want to do them up proper afterwards" glory went unanswered. And of course I already have five tacticals squads and no use for a seventh...so I'm scrambling here. I do need another Dev squad to complete the 5th company...and extra special weapon options for my existing tactical squads are always welcome...so I dug through my piles of sprue. And I came up with a special edition sergeant still in the blister, who will make a nice addition to my lineup, as well as a variety of bits and bobs enough to piece together seven marines in PA and six in robes...so I guess this is going to be a mixed "squad" for the purposes of LPC, and afterwards, the seven non-robed marines can form the basis of the needed dev squad, while the special sergeant goes into the bullpen and the one robed marine who has a boltgun gets that replaced with a melta so that he and his twin can be alternates for the plasma gun toting marines in my two robed tac squads...confusing, maybe, but none of them will go to waste, and the only odd thing about it is that the "tactical squad" will have two robed members...

Anyway, first round of pics soon!

So I've been busy with the brush more so than the camera. I have a few shots from my piles of sprue and such, but how boring is that? I'll get some "work actually in progress" shots taken sometime soon, that's better than "work ahead of me" pics. I got pretty motivated today, the sergeant is almost done, actually, just needs a bit of work on the base and some highlighting. There was this icon on his chest between a pair of wings, I cut it away and greenstuffed in a sword instead, I'm pretty happy with the result there. It almost looks like it was cast that way in the first place. Other than that, not much is done...some basecoating on the non-robed legs and gravel glued onto the corresponding bases. I'll get busy tomorrow while my kids are napping and see if I can power through the legs and torsoes, at least, on those non-robed guys....the robed ones aren't even primed, LOL. I should have started weeks ago, but I guess we still have like six weeks... Anyway, with one model almost done and six more primed and with their basecoating started, color me 10% finished.

Bravo March! Good to see you on the painiting path (if that sounded a bit Eldar-ish, I apologise ;)) Once you start going this will be motivation enough to see the whole thing through!

Sorry to hear about the delay of your FW order - this is odd... Have they shipped it eventually? It is also not cool that the mods did not let you alter your vow given the situation with your order... So let me get this straight: You are still doing a 10-strong Tact. Squad (just not in Iron armour which will comprise of the special edition sergeant, 7 marines in PA and 2 marines in robes?) which will be broken up after the LPC to form the basis of the Dev squad - correct?

Worry not about the robes - there is nothing odd about having two of them in a squad, my tactical squads have three robed marines on average ;)

Look fwd for pics - given the circumstances you're doing a heroic effort!

I have updated your status in the LPC- Phase II thread!

Good luck mate!

~shrug~ It's possible that my request to alter the oath was just lost in the blizzard of email traffic that I'm sure that the mods receive every day. As for the FW order, being loth to pay shipping charges, I've added it to the "to be submitted when they assemble enough requests from their customers" list at my FLGS. Thing is, they were about to send it off when they got an unexpected tax bill, so it's delayed until they can once again front the money (I could pay in advance, but apparently not every interested party was willing!). So that's the story there. First round of pics up later today, I'm nearly done with a second model, the missileer...the squad shoulder pads in any finished models will be rotated away, of course, to keep up the sham that they're all going to be sticking together after this party, LOL...

Okay, here's the "before" pics...not much to look at, which is why I saved them to submit with the first WIP pics:

MKIII will look sweet, especially with Phobus pattern boltguns! It'll just not happen as soon as I'd like...if I pull my order now, it'll take the shop even longer to get enough together, so it hurts me (paying shipping!) and the other customers (longer wait) and the store (no profit on stuff I buy direct!), so I'll just be patient.

Meantime, more pics:

So with two complete, three more about half done, three beyond that a quarter done, and the last three primed, call me 35% complete...but things will slow down, since I'm going back to work tomorrow...

~shrug~ In my family/work situation, I can get in maybe 3-4 hours of painting during the work week, and maybe six on the weekend, so I'll be stunned if I have 6-7 minis done by this time next week. Anyway, I'm now two shoulder pads and a backpack away from having four models complete, but after that, the other six are basically nothing more than basecoated legs and torsoes ATM!

Ugh,

As expected, little progress...it took me through last night to make time to finish the two shoulder pads and backpack referenced above...and of course this morning I remembered that they also need their knee pads done. ~sigh~ Oh, well, I should make some reasonable progress this weekend.

Okay, kneepads are done, and some minor progress on the remaining six models, most notably the gravel on the last three bases and the chest emblems and below-the-knees highlighting on the three remaining non-robed models, who are also glued onto their bases...the half-kneeling one is going to need some greenstuff, though, since the stupid rock he's kneeling on looks like it's floating over the base's gravel. ~sigh~ I know there's plenty of time, but little inconveniences like that....blech!

The pic of the four finished models is horribly yellow, but I promise to set up the light tent when the whole squad is finished, and submit a proper pic!

Okay, two more are done but for the shoulder pads. All four need freehand work (squad marking one one side and chapter badge on the other), as well as highlighting, so it's probably a good hour's work to get them both done, and I'm done for the night....but I should have six finished models sometime tomorrow, leaving four to go...and those four are at least started...the three robed models are mostly basecoated from their feet to their shoulders, and their bases are ready for mounting, but nothing else is done, and the remaining non-robed marine is mounted on the base (he's the kneeling one), including greenstuffing, and his torso and legs are done...so he's probably 40% complete....call the vow 67% complete.

LOL...having painted at least 50 marines with basic boltguns over the last 12 years, one would hope that there'd be a method to my madness by now... fousing on 2-3 models at a time while filling in the "wait for the paint to dry so I can proceed to the next step" inevitably leads to laddering them...which is nice. When I find myself facing a marine who consists of nothing but primed sprue, it's daunting...this way, when I finish "the ones I'm working on," the next set I'm going to focus on is half done already!

/edit/

Ugh! I was on automatic pilot and put tactical squad arrows (yeah, funny that should be a mistake when my vow is to paint a tactical squad!) on the squad shoulder pads for the two "nearly done" marines...and I once again forgot to do their kneepads...well, the kneepads and chapter badge shoulders are done, just working on redoing the other two shoulder pads...

On the bright side, since the three robed marines will serve as alternate special weapon marines for my two robed tactical squads (both of which are equipped with plasma guns, so two of my alternates will have meltas and one a flamer...after I take pictures of them holding bolters, of course! Then those bolters will be set aside for marines yet to be painted...) the "messed up" shoulder pads will just get passed on to two of them...and I'm thinking of throwing an ordo xenos pad on the other guy just for kicks.

Okay, six down...two are almost ready for me to start on the heads, arms, and backpack, one of them needing just highlighting of the torso and upper legs, while the other needs the cincture on his robe painted. The last two are barely begun, with the torso and legs maybe 80% complete with basecoating. Call it 70%.

In a fanatical burst of effort, I've finished a seventh model, and one worthy of a name, at that...he's wearing robes, brandishing both a flamer and a chainsword, and has an ordo xenos shoulder pad on one side and one of my rare deathwing PA pads on the other... Brother Mendo is his name:

Oh, and I made some progress on number eight. The torso/legs are highlighted, the backpack is complete, and the arms, pads, and head are started...and of course he needs the company badge on his knee...

Hmmm...87.349% complete, I think... :P

March, send me the email. We've received other requests to alter a vow. Provided it's equivalent we don't usually have a problem with it. So PM me with details and I will take it further for you.

Hehe...I have three times as many sergeants as squads, hence the "bullpen." Gives me tons of options for how to equip a sergeant for a given squad in any list I write...trust me, I like this guy so much that he's the first in line to deploy with a squad that calls for a fisted sergeant... (for that reason, most of my sergeants don't have squad badges on their shoulder pads...it would look funny for the leader of 5th squad to deploy with first...)

Great progress M'10k, I'm loving Brother Mendo. He is a bit of a psyco in CC I'll bet -_-

Hehe...thanks...former service with the OX and a member of the deathwing? Yeah, he probably kills more with his chainsword than the average veteran sergeant could with lightning claws, LOL...too bad he's got a fetish for flamers, or he'd probably lead an assault squad...

No new pics, but here's what's left:

1. chest aquilla, cincture, and armor highlighting on one model, which also needs to be mounted on the base

2. One shoulder pad

3. One arm

4. Two backpacks

5. Two heads.

6. vegetation hummocks on two bases

Out of ten models, call that 95% complete.

一所懸命, I will be done by the weekend.

I'm now soooo close:

http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff471/headhuntersix/WIP/PICT0376.jpg

Remaining is:

/edit/

The backpack

The head

And the aforementioned hummocks.

Maybe in the next 24 hours? すぐわかります!

/edit/

By the way, pretend not to see the devastator shoulder pads on most of the models, they're tacticals for now, LOL! Oh, and if you look closely, you can see that the highlighting of the chapter badge shoulder pad on the incomplete model doesn't match the rest of the squad. They have outlined rims, this one is a solid light green...to match the circa 2001 squad for whom he will serve as an alternate special weapon bearer after this vow is complete and he has his boltgun...surgically removed.
