Angels Palatine

O Emperor, in wrath, fierce and untamed,
whose mighty power doth shake the skies,
be pleased with this war's tumultuous roar.
Delight in swords red with blood
and the dire ruins of savage battle.
Rejoice in furious challenge and avenging strife,
For it is here that your servants shall prove their devotion!

- Excerpt from the Litanies of War

he Angels Palatine stand as a bulwark of civilization on the wild and forgotten northern perimeter of Segmentum Obscurus. Created to support those isolated Imperial domains along the Outer Arm of the galaxy, these proud Sons of Sanguinius have met and bested the foes of mankind eye-to-eye on countless worlds. But the Eye of Terror, a cesspool of heretics and traitors since time out of mind, demands constant attention by Imperial authorities. Over the years the responsibility for the defense of the Northern Periphery has shifted to the Angels, who are now left to prosecute their campaigns without the aid of the Navy or the Guard. Alone and without any significant Imperial support, this valiant brotherhood struggles to preserve the Pax Imperialis, with the malevolent light of the Eye at their backs and the cold void of the Halo Stars threatening to swallow them whole.

Origins
In the year 322 of the 37th millennium of the Imperium of Man, the High Lords of Terra decreed a 22nd Founding of the Adeptus Astartes. One of the Chapters selected to train the next generation of Astartes was the Angels Vermillion, a secretive Successor Chapter of the Blood Angels. They welcomed the honor, though for less than noble than most Chapters. Prior to their selection, the First Company Captain had challenged the leadership of the Chapter Master of the Angels Vermillion. The Chapter was quickly polarized, with each Captain declaring their support save for Captain Julianus of the 4th Company, who decided to remain neutral. The First Company Captain was killed in a duel with the Chapter Master before civil war could erupt, but the Chapter leadership could not decide what to do with Julianus. He was one of the Chapter's most respected officers, and certainly it's most widely traveled. He had served in the Deathwatch, his company was frequently assigned the most far-flung deployments. However, he clashed frequently with the Chapter's leadership over issues of strategic doctrine, organization, and diplomacy, and his lack of support for concerning. They simply could not execute Julianus when he had committed no overt crime, so he was given command of the training cadre.

Looks good, all I will say is that I don't like the bit that says that they were created to do guard duty as their purpose. They are a SM Chapter, not a founding of IG Regiments. The fleet can guard those domains and chuck a few Guard Regiments there as well.

What might be better is to nail a Founding that they were created in and that they have a Home World along the northern perimeter of Segmentum Obscurus (Possibly called Byzantium Prime :)) and that over the years, due to the lack of Imperial units the burden of defence for this sector has fallen almost soley onto the shoulders of the Astartes with the help of local Fleet assets that have been raised from the local planets.

Just a thought

An excellent point about the guard duty. I think your idea works better, although I would like to point out that the Astartes Praeses and the Maelstrom Warders were all created to guard a specific area of space. I also see you've picked up on the Byzantine theme I've thrown in! I was actually going to more of a Russian feel, since Tsarist Russia claimed to be the "Third Rome". Which do you think I should choose? Thank you for your comments, Brother-Sergeant!

I like the Byzantine feel of the Chapter, possibly as I love Roman history :)

As for created to guard, you could also say that they were created during the 8/9th Founding (like my Chapter in M33) in a response to the need to defend isolated areas after Abbadons Black Crusade (there was one around this time and 2 Foundings shortly after) as the Crusade pulled away vital Imperial units and over time the Chapter has become almost the solitary Imperial force in the region, by M41 they are all thats really left. And that the area they now guard is being eroded constantly while they suffer from infighting among Imperial forces and rebellion. So, not only fighting orks/raiders/eldar/pirates and Chaos Marines, but also traitor Guard and the like. Similar to the end of the Byzantine Empire, and there is a real loss of morale, especially as in recent years the Black Rage has taken hold big time in the chapter leading to more tragedies being under strength due to high combat losses and the black rage (around 700 Marines?). But then you have hope in the Komenos line of Chapter-masters who have won remarkable victories recently and are hoping to reverse their downfall.

Hope that makes sense, im just thinking of things here now :(

Excellent ideas! I don't want to overdo the Byzantine theme, but I do like this:

And that the area they now guard is being eroded constantly while they suffer from infighting among Imperial forces and rebellion. So, not only fighting orks/raiders/eldar/pirates and Chaos Marines, but also traitor Guard and the like.

Also, Happy Birthday to me and the Origins section has been started.

Government conspiracy?

I said it in other thread. The likehood of BA Chapter in later Foundings is minimal, given the curse of Sanquinius. *Presumably*, the 22nd Founding was during Age of Apostasy in M36.

It may seem counterintuitive but in ancient warfare, fleeing from battle was usually a good way to get oneself killed.

Really? I'm not trying to be rude, but where does it say that? I don't remember reading that in any material I've read about the Blood Angels. Also, whoops! No conspiracy, just an error. Fixed!

It is more that our great gene line is getting worse. So as the curse shows itself more, the higher ups learn about it more, and they are less willing to use us.

HOWEVER, I would think that the 22nd founding would be ok.

The only one I would really be worried about would be the most recent one.
IA Sanguinary Crusaders The Crusaders of Blood.
IA Primaris Legion The Survivors
IT Unholy Chosen The Chosen of the Unholy Imperium of Cane.
IT Star Saviors The Chapter for the Greater Good.

"The Blood Angels' Successor Chapters were created before discovery of the Blood Angels' flaw... doubtless there are many in dark and far-flung corners of the galaxy, each trying to battle the legacy that is the Red Thirst.'' - C:BA p 14 (not sure which edition, though.

They were trying to fix the Curse in the 21st Founding (with the Lamenters), so logically they wouldn't have used it after that.

I would go with a slightly earlier founding, myself. Maybe the 18th Founding?

Other than that, I like the origins so far, good work! Chapter civil war ay? Nice touch :(

Ah, well that does make sense. 19th Founding it is!

Why thank you! OP has been revised again, some minor changes. Also, I'm stumped as to what their battle cry will be. "Nobiscum Deus" doesn't quite fit.
