Nirachs Red Scorpions

I've been working on these for a while, at the detriment to my Black Templars, but they're for next years AoP board, so I feel the need to get them finished sooner than the Templars!

First up, army shot as they stand at the moment, give or take some paint:

At this moment in time, there's a third Terminus Ultra, and a second Ares under construction, but that's halted until at least 90% of the rest is painted.

Land Raider Redeemer:

Five of the twenty (Two ten man) Assault Marines:

Chaplain with Jump Pack:

Two of the three multi-melta's (One per squad, three tac squads):

Apothecary from one squad (All squads bar assault marines getting apothecaries):

And the current things on the painting table:

Custom sculpted (By me) Commander Culln based on the front cover of Badab War part 1:

Damocles Rhino:

Venerable Dreadnought:

Still to go I've got three tactical squads, give or take, 15 assault marines, four LR's to paint, two to build, another dread to paint, ten terminators to paint/finish painting, five dev marines to paint, nine sternguard vets to paint, two predators (One dakka one tri-las), and I think that's it..

I think they look pretty cool.

Personally I'm not a fan of the cotton smoke or flames.

Looking forward to the grey being highlighted.

Did a tyranid try and kiss that dreadnought?

Thanks man.

Yeah, they're pretty hit or miss - Some people love 'em, others hate 'em.

Yes, actually, my girlfriends Trygon Prime :nuke:

Can we have more pictures of Culln, please? I think just the one mid-distance photo of him is not doing justice to the conversion. Any close ups you can provide would be appreciated, brother. Anyway, great stuff all round. <_<

I've not got any more of him with paint on yet, I've been so busy trying to sell my dads (Well, mine now) RC30's I've not had time for painting the last few days, but I do have a few pictures from start of greenstuff to where he is now, give or take.

That's how it started, using Battle Brother Artemis power sword (Chopped down a little bit, and filed some), but I replaced that with a Grey Knight plastic force sword or whatever they call them.

I took that one for scale purposes, he is considerably taller than most terminators, but considering the badass nature of the character I thought some extra "beefcake" would add to the imposing nature.

That was the first effort of the etched brass on the shoulder, I was going to greenstuff the shoulder out to meet it, but ended up lopping it off and making cuts in the brass instead, to make it fit the curves of the shoulder better

That's a rear shot of the cloak I made (Incidentally, the GW palette tray thing makes for a great cloak making tool (Thin layer of vaseline, then spread the GS out, cut to size, and drape over model)

At this stage I was still pratting around with the sword. I made a mistake and cut it a bit too short, so at first I had the thought of making a rock around the base (What you see the start of here), but changed my mind and sculpted the tip back on. If I had another force sword, I'd re-cut the hilt end and use the plastic tip from GW, but dremel out the channel down the blade as I did with this one, after flattening it a little with a file, and marking the line to dremel with the tip of a file.

And that was before I started adding decor to the model

Other side of much the same stage as before.

  • 4 weeks later...

Tartaros terminators arrived, as did the contemptors, helios etcetera.

Decided the Kheres assault cannons needed something a bit.. Different to regular assault cannons. Enter large ammunition feeds!

I'll be adding some "bottoms" to the ammo belts for the Assault cannons. But last night I was desperate to build a Tartaros termie, so I didn't get around to it.

Really nice. That Cullen conversion is very good as well.

Thanks man.

He's my first outing with GS on that level, I'm hoping to get some more practice in before I use of the FW large scale marines to make an Emperors Champion (Assuming I can find enough source pictures, Sigismund ideally).

I should have done some work on the other contemptor, but my pack of assorted skulls arrived, and I just had to start on the Chaplain dread (Which, because I like the contemptors a lot, is a relic contemptor). It's somewhat inspired by Ghost Rider, with the forward leaning screamy pose. Yes, he is going in the scorpions. I made a mistake on the order and missed off the CCW, so now I get to decide between the claw and the fist for the CCW arm.

Now the new paints have arrived, I've started work painting the Scorpions again, new apothecary on the left (New paints, no oils or powders yet), completed one on the right (Old paints, oils and weathering powders).

The white covers so nicely, as does the yellow. I'm much happier with the coverage.

Your Culln conversion is awesome, can't wait to see it finished.

But this flamer doesn't look like it goes "swoooosh", more like "pffffffrrrrrrt"

Thank you - I should be back to work on it now, my weekends have calmed down.

Yeah, I do keep thinking about replacing that one, but I think I ought to get the rest of the base infantry done before I do - I want to enter them into AOP, so I need to get cracking!

I must know, where did you get that head? It looks familiar but I can't remember...

http://www.fenryll.com/product.php?id_product=210

If I remember rightly, it's the second or third one size down from that set of skulls. I did need to chop a little bit out of the back to get it in the gap without damaging the decoration, after using a dremel to cut out the cavity. I also used a bit of the sprue they came on to prop the skull up at the back (I dremelled out a bit much..)

for the contemptor dread you should try to find one of the old metal Chaos dread CCW the one with the crab claw. now that would be sweet for a scorpion chaplian to weld.

I hadn't even thought of that.

I quite like that idea, and there's one on ebay for a couple of quid...

Can't wait to see more paint slapped on these bad boys. I have to concur with the others though: the flames and smoke aren't doing it for me. Everything else looks stellar though!

The smoke/flame effects will likely be taken out when they've done their bit at AoP, the intention is to have Culln, the LR Redeemer, assault marines/Chaplain, and the three squads done for AoP, perhaps the Chaplain dread, if time permits. Once I've done that I'll take the flame effects out at least, and probably the smoke effect - The LRR is taking up waaay too much space as it is. On the one side of the case there's that LR and the standard LR, and on the other there's three Terminus Ultra's, two Ares, two dreads, one damocles.. and so on.

I should be getting back at them now, had a hectic few weeks, and then wanted to wait for the new paints to arrive (And, by the way, I love how much better they are at covering).

Managed to spend a couple of hours finishing off a second apothecary (Two thirds the way there!), and doing the helmet stripes, should pad rims, and the first attack of the black oil paint mixed with weathering powder on the other eight members of that squad. Hoping to get them virtually complete tomorrow, since I'll have a six hour window to paint in!

I'll chuck some photos up tomorrow afternoon, hopefully.

Getting some serious paint down now that I'm doing doing umpteen :cussing layers per colour, got five assault marines nearly completed tonight (Some little details and drybrushing left to do, and the weathering powder will be massively subdued when the matt lacquer goes over the top - Almost to the level of the five in the background):

Now that is some quick scorpion painting!

Really interesting use of the 2nd edition chaos dread claw, looking forward to seeing the final version of that!

The new paints are absolutely worth it - I love doing two layers maximum, and getting really good coverage.

Im obviously part way through green stuffing that, but I'm on the verge of taking the claw parts off and sculpting my own that look more like scorpion pincers - I need to see how plausible it is to build the existing ones out to that style.

All credit to deathknight, though, for the idea. I'd never have thought of it otherwise.
