Silver Phoenix’s Deathwatch Challenge

Okay so it took me a while but here we go. This is the start of what I shall here by refer to as SP’s Deathwatch Challenge. Basically I am writing a series of short stories based around the actions of the Deathwatch, or more importantly, one team of the Deathwatch. This team shall consist entirely of members from DIY Chapters, unless I decide to throw in a few canon Chapters at some stage. The reason this is a challenge as I shall, every fortnight or so, announce a position within the team and ask for submissions based on the criteria I set forward with each challenge. At the end of each fortnight I shall judge what entry I like the most/can most work with in the story. Note that as this is my writing I shall, if needs be, make small changes on the character, although I will try to stick with the profiles provided and consult the characters owner about any major changes.

Also note that any character submitted needs to have an IA in a fairly advanced state of completion. This story is as much about advertising DIY Chapters as it is an excuse for me to write. So, onto the basic fluff on the first story:

The Deathwatch of the Ordo Xenos, an elite brotherhood of superhuman warriors drawn from all across the Imperium for a single purpose. Each of these warriors a hero in his own right, a veteran of a thousand battles against the great myriad of foes of mankind. Each sworn to secrecy upon his return to his chapter after having been at the forefront of mankind’s eternal war against the constant xeno threat that lurks at the corners of civilised space. Led in this eternal crusade by the shadowy figures of the Inquisition it takes an extraordinary marine to answer the call when it comes. This marine, a first among equals, leaves all bonds of brotherhood and the camaraderie of his chapter behind as he enters the Black Ship of the Inquisition. And yet many answer the call, for it is an honour not lightly refused. The enemies of mankind are ever persistent and the battle never ending.

The agri world of Feronn had long been regarded as a world apart from the turmoils of the Imperium. Known for its great verdant farmlands and its proud towering cities it was also home to the Basilica of St Kia and the burial place of her earthly remains. Thousands of pilgrims flocked to the great Basilica to give thanks to this warrior saint whom had given her life hundreds of years earlier during the Scythia Insurrection. The Basilica was protected by an Order Minoris of the Sisters of Battle, the Order of the Martyr’s Tears.

The peace on Feronn was not to last however. In the early part of 989.M41 a vast orkish fleet emerged on the outskirts of the system. How such a fleet managed to evade detection this far into Imperial space was unsure but the results of their arrival were not. Within days the small fleet guarding Feronn had been smashed aside and orks and Guardsmen fought through the streets.

Knowing how critical the food stocks of Feronn were the Segmentum Command mobilised vast numbers of Guardsmen and even a Titan legion. This merely slowed the orkish advance and soon the invasion reached a stalemate. With the war dragging on with both sides engaged in bloody combat no one detected that a far greater doom was coming before it was too late. The first warning the Imperial forces had of the encroaching enemy was the sudden loss of contact with several outposts on the edge of the system. Soldiers on the ground began to make reports of a constant feeling on unease and soon psykers reported a feeling of a great Shadow in the Warp. The Tyranids had come to Feronn. It was shortly after this that contact was lost with the planet. The final message, a plea for help was sent via the last struggling astropathic relay. Its destination, Ínquisitor Saeros of the Ordo Xenos.

Although the exact contents of the message were kept secret Inquisitor Saeros petitioned to be grants a team from the Deathwatch. With his request granted he gathered his team and set out for the Feronn system.

Deathwatch Team:

1. Watch Captain Validus Flamma of the Iron Flames

2. Brother Sergeant Liborius Sedullon of the Ghost Dragons

3. Veteran Brother Maxillius Procella of the White Hand Chapter

4. Brother Li Jon Okipiet of the Astral Reavers

5.

6.

7. Brother Titus of the Stormbringers

8. Brother Ruval Skaron of the War Axes

9. Brother Russi of the Blazing Sons

10. Brother Pallas Lucii of the Revelators

11.

So there you have it, folks. The basic run down on the background behind the story. First Challenge will be coming up soon. Note that as I do more challenges, more information will be revealed. This it to represent the level of knowledge each initiate has so that people create characters with no insider knowledge or ideas that there character shouldn't know.

Stay tuned for the first challenge...

EDIT: No more staying tuned, here is the first challenge:

The First post to be filled is that of the: NEWBIE

Basically for this first challenge I want submissions for a new guy to the Deathwatch. This is his first assignment after being seconded to the Deathwatch He is knew blood, possibly even a red shirt (did I mention some characters are likely gonna die?)

So for your submissions I was a minimun of:

Name

Chapter: (with a link to the IA)

What sort of Wargear he prefers (bearing in mind there will be Specialist roles later on)

A bit of his History:

A Description:

Anything else you think I should know:

And for this challenge the extra requirement of:

How he feels in relation to this whole suddenly Deathwatch thing. Was his secondment voluntary, how does his chapter view it... That sort of thing.

I am not posting a max or minimum amount of words for these but I expect people to use common sense. I will decide who fills the post on the 24th-25th.

Oh and dont hesitate to ask if you have any questions. I dont bite... much...

Name: Russi (Roo-saie, try to say it with a south african afrikaner accent.)

Chapter: Blazing Sons (Link in sig to old IA)

Prefered Wargear: Flamer (Some kind of special fuel I guess, given the deathwatch), his whole body.

A bit of his History: Only survivor of twenty marines killed by Greater Daemon storming traitor governor's throne room, only survived by activating teleport beacon for elite reserves to be deployed. Russi was part of a tactical squad, just one of many among the ranks of the Blazing Sons until fate saw them facing down a greater daemon

A Description: Scarred more inwardly than out. Being sole survivor when all his brothers died has weighed heavily upon Russi. Average height and build, appearing in many ways the same as many of his brothers. Russi was a campaign veteran even before the destructive loss of his brothers, though the elevation to the housecarls of his company has brought him some respite, he strives for every mission and assignment he can that will prove he is as worthy of an honourable death as his lost brothers.

Russi needed space, he needed to leave if he had any hope of ever fully returning to his brothers. Self imposed exile had been his only recourse until the call to join the Deathwatch was heard. Leaping at the chance Russi appealed to his captain over and over until, finally, he reluctantly agreed to approve the transfer.

Now Russi stands among brethren from some of the Emperor's most famous sons, from many chapters across the Imperium. Each man a member of his own elite brotherhood, Russi now stands more alone than ever before, his armour being repainted the black of the Deathwatch. Only the emblem of the Blazing Sons, his memories and promise to his captain to carry the Chapters honour with him keep him grounded in his new reality.

Anything else you think I should know:

No he didn't fight the daemon, or banter with it, or any other kind of macho brainless, depthless action. He crawled, battered and bleeding over to the beacon while the last two members of his squad were slaughtered by the beast. His was an act of pure efficient, if desperate, defiance to what he thought was certain death and worse, failure.

How he feels in relation to this whole suddenly Deathwatch thing: He feels he has seen the worst of the galaxy, but the solitary seperation from his chapter is a direct response to his sole survivor syndrome.

The Blazing Sons as a whole honour the Deathwatch and value it's members experience, other than that they do not feel strongly one way or another, it simply is a part of their duty. (Dour bunch I know).

That alright SP?

Name: Laros Inthium

Chapter: Masks of Death

Prefered wargear: Combimelta

A bit of his history: Considered one of the best diplomats the chapter has produced in the millenium, Laros has smoothed relations for the Imperials forces of many campaigns, often resulting in victory when it seemed impossible. The last campaign he participated in was one such triumph and considered his greatest thus far - no less than seventeen different regiments were involved, many of them already broken and brought in to support a similar regiment, facing a large of Using his power as an astarte leader, Laros brought all of their commanders into a single room, and told them to kneel before an image of the God-Emperor. When they all complied, he told them to stand as servants of the Emperor. While they were not instantly united, most saw they had both something in common with the other commanders and that they had a duty to the Emperor. Laros then relayed the commands given to him by the captain, and prepared to speak to the commanders who would have to directly collaborate with each other.

A description: Brilliant and trained by the best, and feels entitled to respect. Is incredibly forceful and decisive as a result of that, and is considered charismatic at best and tyranical at worst.

Anything else I think you should know - The Masks have seconded many marines to the Deathwatch because of their focus on diplomacy, and are proud of that. Laros is no exception to that, and has a deep pride in his chapter, but also recognises the strengths of those he works with, having been shown it through countless campaigns both abroad and in the Deathwatch.

How he feels towards being in the Deathwatch: Looks like I answered that already :)

Maybe a little bit more info if you got it but thats good for now.

What kind? Personality or appearance or history? I've written a draft of a short story about this guy and that particularly messed up event he survived which is what made me pick him for this challenge.

I don't suppose it matters really, I can give more of anything, it's just I hadn't thought about his actual appearance till now to be honest, nor his actual personality, just the event itself. But let's see what I can come up with.

I do hope to have a Blazing Son in the team (as I've always loved those guys).

Made my day.

*Cracks knuckles*

Right then. Why not?

Following GHY's example:

Name: Lios Nasir

Chapter: Infinity Knights (link in the list in my signature)

Prefered Wargear: Mayneson-pattern Chainsword

A bit of his History: A veteran of the Infinity Knights' Wandering Companies, Nasir has always proven willing to take the hits for his team-mates in the fray. Over the course of his service Nasir has lost his right arm from the shoulder and his left arm from the elbow. These were replaced by the salvaged arms of his dead squad-brothers, earning him the nickname 'Nasir Three-handed'.

A Description: Nasir is a close-quarters fighter first and foremost. His custom-made curved Chainsword is a relic almost unique to his home Chapter, and he is scrupulous about it's maintenance, carefully cleaning it and making any required repairs himself after every battle. Personality-wise, Nasir is humble to the point of selflessness, can be relied on to hold ground against even the most overwhelming foes, and is as willing to take the hits for his new squad-brothers in the Deathwatch as he was in the Infinity Knights.

How he feels towards being in the Deathwatch: New brothers to work with, new worlds to see, new battles to fight and new glories to be won in the Emperor's name. Who wouldn't want to join the Deathwatch?

Name: Izak Bereon

Chapter: Storm Stalkers

Wargear: As one of Scout Sergeant Cennedig's favored pupils, Bereon carries a falcata, his mentor's signature weapon, in addition to his bolter.

History: Bred in the prison-mines of Grommire, Izak Bereon is more animal than man. At the age of 11, he fought his way out of the mines, killing four of the guards on the way. He was fighting to the planet's deadly surface, broken and wounded from his efforts, when the Heralds brought him before the Chapter. He fought as one of the most promising Scouts the Chapter had known in centuries. He continued to fight as one of the Emperor's Space Marines for the next forty-three years. He was still fighting when Brother Aryn fell. The autopsy revealed that a poisoned blade had caused Aryn's demise, but Bereon saw Aryn fall. He was unharmed, unwounded. In bewildered anger, he questioned the findings of the Apothecarion and was met with violent contempt and charges of insubordination. Facing death or the lifeless existence of a servitor, Izak Bereon thought he had finally picked the wrong fight. The following morning, however, he was summoned before the Chapter's leadership. In a startling change of heart, he was formally rebuked and subsequently commended for his performance in the battle. The prior day's insolence was relegated to simple grief and adrenaline. Only Sergeant Cennedig stood silent, bearing a countenance hard as stone as if he had just stepped from the fray himself. In the following weeks, Bereon found himself selected for a rare and coveted...and indefinite...secondment to the Deathwatch.

Description: Izak Bereon is of average size for a Space Marine and wears Corvus pattern armor. The suit's breastplate has been replaced with a modified Mk VIII chestpiece and gorget after the previous one was torn asunder in close combat with an Eldar Incubus. Also, he bears a Mk III helm of long heritage, gifted to him upon his ascension to Battle Brother for his valor as a Scout in the Mela'baran Ork campaigns.

Personality: Bereon is quick to anger, but a born predator. Though easily goaded into fighting, he is in complete control of his killer instincts, making him all the more dangerous. Otherwise, he tends to be intensely introverted. Rarely, he will bond with an individual and will protect that person with intense ferocity.

Views: While honored to be serving the Deathwatch, Bereon cannot help but wonder as to the mysterious and extremely suspicious circumstances of his appointment. Though he would not dare dishonor his Chapter publicly, he dwells upon the thought constantly.

Just re-reading my ramblings, and then over Ace's much more concise entry, I'm going to have to actually do something structured when I get back aren't I?

Gee thanks Ace.

:D

Any time.

Name: Brother Pelagios

Chapter: Aurochs

Wargear: An assault marine of the Aurochs carries two swords eschewing ranged weapons for the ability to strike with twice the ferocity in close combat

History: Growing up on Achaea yielded a warrior of considerable skill and purity having been raised in a culture of constant warfare and reverance of the chapter. He is a young battle brother with incredible promise. He has risen quickly in the ranks of his assault squad becoming the combat squad leader after only 3 years. He has proven his martial skill among his brothers in battle against the orks and insipid Eldar. In recognition of such achievement the chapter has seconded him to the deathwatch to further rid the galaxy of xenos.

Description: Standard issue MkVII armor, mediterranean skin and hair (dark and black)

Personality: Quick to anger and prove himself Pelagios rarely gets along with other brothers outside of his squad. Has an air of arrogance about him brought on by his natural skills but works tirelessly to improve his martial technique. Is very indoctrinated in his beliefs that mutants and heretics should be exterminated, and will openly denounce librarians in their midst and will keep a close eye on any psyker. Despises overly complicated tactics and will charge headlong into battle often.

Views: Relishes the opportunity to eradicate xenos and traitors alike.

Some great entries here guys. My mind is already mulling over some ideas. And remember although I shall select only one from this lot, there is always another... about nine spots or so to fill. Everything from the Captain of the squad, to the CLose combat specialist to some form of specialist... Any entry you have entered into an earlier position you can always re submit to a later one, as long as it meets the requirements for that position...

Oh and I forgot to mention that one of the short stories may involve a Chapter or two from those whom have provided a member to the team. I will consult the Chapter owner when I get that far though.

*puts on the pedant-hat*

Errrm, guys. The point of this challenge is establish the "new guy in alien environment" character. - You should build upon this, not how many accolades the marine has earned.

*takes off the pedant-hat*

I know, I'll be silent now. ^_^

Hmm, sounds very interesting SP! I think I'll hold off on offering anything up for the first team member though, maybe I'll wait and take a shot for a specialist slot?

Name: Brother Sedullon

Chapter: Ghost Dragons, 3rd Company

What sort of Wargear he prefers: Bolter and power sword.

A bit of his History: Brother Sedullon is one of the few remaining members of the Ghost Dragons 3rd Company after they were the rearguard during the evacuation of Arnok IV.

A Description: Shattered by the loss of his brothers Sedullon had become a recluse and rarely spoke to anyone outside of the remnants of the 3rd Company. Constantly training he would not speak to any of the Chaplains about his ordeal so very few within the Chapter know exactly what happened to his squad and those that do will not speak about it in respect to Sedullon. Sedullon has written the name of all the fallen members of 3rd Company on the inside of his armour but his fallen brothers from his squad are written on the outside. He will likely be the same with his new squadmates and he will hold his ground and not let himself shame the honour of his Chapter. Personality wise Sedullon was once a warm and entertaining character but after Arnok IV he has changed and is now only totally serious and a man of few words.

Anything else you think I should know: Sedullon has a deep hatred for the Tyranids and will fly into an uncontrollable rage if he sees another Marine killed facing them as he relives his last battle against them.

Views: Carrying his former sergeants power sword Sedullon feels honoured to have been chosen and knows he will return a changed man and his demons will be gone forever. His Chapter are proud of him and know he will return to them as his former self.

Not sure if I should rush to find a name for my Chapter now or if I should wait for the specialist slots to come along... A great idea for a challenge though SP

I think editing Nasir's story at this point would be kinda like cheating, wouldn't it?
