EDIT - 13 June 2013....

So, this thread has been going for more than a year now, and in that time my army has changed dramatically (and so has the painting!). I thought I'd take the opportunity (for anyone new to the thread) to just put in a few highlights of completed models here at the beginning, to give you a glimpse of some of the stuff I've painted in the year from May 2012 to June 2013....

2nd Company got some models.....

Firstly, Attack Squadron Azmaveth..

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/Space%20Marines/2nd%20Company/2nd_Company2_zps0e932688.jpg

and Prefect Chamuel (Sammael counts-as)

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/Space%20Marines/Characters/IMG_0934_zps98e3d48e.jpg

3rd Company had some much needed armour support

I painted a load of different things for the Path to Redemption event

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/Space%20Marines/photo1_zps8646e9d3.jpg

and, most recently, 1st Company got their Master, Knights and Command Squad

...and back to the original OP.....

Hi guys, I've got an ongoing GotC army, which I'm getting around to finishing and photographing, but I got some of the new glazes from the Citadel paint range over the weekend, and tried them out last night, so I thought I'd let you see some of the results.

This is my Chaplain's bike, just sprayed with Army Painter Plate Mail spray (or whatever its called!), with the red Bloodletter glaze applied in a single coat to the front fairing and two coats to the seat. The seat had not had a wash of Badab black, but the fairing had. As you can see its quite orangey in colour, which I wasn't expecting.

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0291.jpg

I also tried out the Lamenter's yellow in a single coat to the headlight, and was much more impressed, as again this was directly over the platemail spray. Also in this picture you can see Tyrant Skull dry paint on the front tyre of the bike to the left. I was very impressed with the dry paint for this type of work. If you are wondering why one bike has the Ravenwing front fairing and the other doesn't, its because the one without is for my Biker Captain when I run them as a Codex SM army (and I got him for free from a mate!) smile.gif

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0288.jpg

The bikes themselves have had 2 washes of Badab Black, followed by a wash of Devlan mud, and then last night I applied a wash of Baal Red followed by a glaze of Bloodletter to the front and rear bike fairings to "redden" them up and break up the metallic look of the models. The bike on the left has also received a line highlight of boltgun metal on the fairings.

further work in progress pics are available at this link, whilst the army is here for general stuff and here for Company Veterans

I hope you enjoy smile.gif

The gold looks great! What is your recipie?

Thanks, really simple actually - black spray undercoat, chainmail basecoat, badab black wash, burnished gold drybrush, badab black wash....and that's about it (PS you can be generous with the paint on the washes!). I haven't tried it out with any of the new paints yet though. :)

Being generous with Badab Black is very forgiving... Really like you recipe - I'll try it out for future reference. GotC have a special attracton for me - is it the red robes? Dunno. :)

How was the finecast sammy to assemble? I have one comming in and I'd like to know what to expect.

Also I was thinking I will cut off his head and stick it back on with a magnet, I've magnetized the head of the driver of one of my speeders as well as his right arm.

I love this head from the samael jetbike so this way i could use the same head when i put samael in the speeder.

I originally painted my guys with red robes well before I'd decided upon GotC, simply because I think the red works well with the dark and dingy look of armour washed with black.....It was a happy chance that I managed to get almost the exact replica of the GotC paint scheme!....It was particularly lucky given that I specifically wanted to run a DA successor chapter as I've always liked the DA fluff more than any of the other marine chapters/legions. :)

But yeah, red robes are cool! :)

Sammy was OK actually.....not too much in the way of messing about. I used some liquid gs in a couple of places, most notably under his feet as the little pedals attachment thingy was a bit warped. Overall, the quality is very good, I haven't had to do any cosmetic filling of holes, and there are no areas of missing resin. The annoying part is going to be the flying base, as the hole in the underside really isn't any good at all, and the flying base itself is rubbish. So I'm going to have to do some other basing method, probably using a dreadnought base for a nice effect.

Chopping off Sammy's head might be a bit awkward to be honest. His upper torso, right arm and head come as one piece, and the armour is slightly raised around his neck. Personally I wouldn't risk it....but then maybe I'm just a coward ;)

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts once your Sammy arrives! :)

oh, and btw

I, Facmanpob answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete a Ravenwing Battleforce from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 425 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to the Guardians of the Covenant Chapter of the 1st Legion and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end.

Unit breakdown:

Ravenwing Attack Squad of 6 bikes, Sergeant with Power Fist, 2 plasmaguns

Multi-melta Attack Bike

Landspeeder with Heavy Bolter and Assault Cannon

And here we see most of the force at the very start of the vow........

So, on with the show.......I'm settling on a paint scheme and I've got a decision to make regarding the colour of the fairings.....the one on the left has 2 washes of black followed by 1 was of Baal Red then a glaze of bloodletter. The one on the right has an added stage of a devlan mud wash right before the baal red.

Now, the one on the left is a bit more red than the one on the right, and I have to decide which one to roll out for the rest of the force.......

I have pleged the same unit as you, yet I also pleged to magnetize this one like i did my other one, I put a magnet in each bikers ass a magnet in each bike seat, a magnet in each special weapon arm and each robed guy shoulder, in all the Sargent weapons (fists swords etc) In the Attack bike weapons in the Speeder typhoons, in the speeder weapons, in the speeder drivers shoulder (for the Sammael sword) and in the speeder drivers neck so I can swap to a more ornate head for Samael, ( I will be leaving off the head magnet in the new speeder as I only ever need one samael)

cool beans! ;) I'm magnetising as well......did the assault cannon on the speeder last night after coming back from the pub....and managed not to screw it up despite being full of beer! ;)

Good luck with painting Sammael, I didn't pledge him as part of the oath as I didn't want to overstretch myself.....I can always pledge him later ;)

Awesome sauce - lovin' your Guardians facmanpob. Great to see a Chaplain on a bike (if that is what that model is waving the Crozius around).

Cheers

Thanks for the thanks! It is a Chaplain you can see....got him cheap on ebay! :P

Latest update:

In addition to the bikes posted previously I've now washed this lot as well....these have 2 washes of black followed by baal red....I've missed out the Devlan Mud stage. After this they will get a red glaze and I'll start work on the detail

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bikes_red_wash.jpg

Close up to see the effect of the red wash

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bikes_red_wash1.jpg

and the Interrogator Chaplain's bike

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bikes_red_wash2.jpg

The vigilant amongst you will note that all in all this is far more than I've committed to in the Oath (6 bikes, Attack Bike, Speeder) as I've now got 9 bikes, a Chaplain and a speeder on the go. Well, the plan was always to get the washes done on as many bikes as possible, as this is a relatively fast part of the paint scheme, and then reduce the load when I come to the detail......it also will hopefully put me in a good position to make a new vow later in the challenge! ;)

I was unsure about pleging him but i thought HEY why the heck not. I'm hoping to get my before pictures of the bikers today, and then get the bikes assembled and blacked

Hopefully i am able to get at least that done today, I also have an unpainted landspeeder from before from my last RW box that needs painting, so I would hope that today can be assembly and basecoats...

So, my Codex Marine Captain on his bike is acting as the tester model for the force (and is not part of the vow!), and last night I applied what I think will be the final stage to the bike fairings....gloss varnish.

It suddenly dawned on me that the fairings and external metal pipework on motorbikes are often glossy and/or chromed, so I wondered if that would work on my bikes....next stage will be top fairing and guns, although I'm having trouble settling on a colour for the guns (the default will be black but I'm also thinking either a dark wood colour or DA green)

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0305.jpg

Also, I finished the basic construction, priming, and 1st wash of my landspeeder. The weapons are magnetised so it will be able to vary its loadout relevant to the threat. I'm going to paint it as is, then do the driver, gunner and multimelta/heavy bolter last.

They look good not sure if I like the pewter look of the bikes.

Sorry, I missed this earlier, just noticed it now. Yeah they do have a bit of a pewter look initially. I think that's from the interaction between the first layer of Nuln Oil over the Army Painter Plate metal spray. This should go once I've done the full spectrum of washes and highlights. :)

I had a problem today which i wanted to share with you, I was building my Samael and I snapped his sword off somehow.... It went flying across the room and i can't find it anywhere .... So i did what any respectible modeler would , cut off the little nub it was to fit on, got one o them swanky DA powerswords that come in the ravenwing box, cut the arm off that at the wrist and BOOM new Ravensword... I was gonna add to it like i did the one for my speeder sammy but meh it looks fine how it is

Glad you found a replacement....that's one of the great things about the Ravenwing sprues, they come with loads of useful bits! :P I'm forever dropping bits on the floor and then scrabbling around for ages trying to find them.....I once lost a powerfist for a week until I found the cat batting it about in a different room!
