Maverike's Review: Storm Talon

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I'm going to do a review of the Storm Talon model just like I did with the Storm Raven.

So like the Storm Raven review I will be posting in sections, beginning with my initial thoughts of the model and the unit, moving on to the construction of the models and finally moving on to painting and basing of the model.

Now the big note to all of this is: The model itself won't be released until the 2nd of June. I've already placed an advanced order for it though so I hope to get it quit soon there after. *Crosses fingers* Here's hopping.

Initial thoughts based on the preview images

I will admit I have not yet seen the model in person. These initial thoughts are based purely on the preview images available at Games Workshop.com. However, based on those images I am less then thrilled with that I see. The Cockpit appears to be far too large in comparison to the rest of the model. With a cockpit that large I would expect the model to be closer in size to the storm raven.

In order to explain my point a bit more I dropped an image of the Storm Talon and the Storm Raven into Photoshop and did some cutting and pasting:

On a model the size of the Storm Raven the Cockpit fits a lot better. It's just that the cockpit is comparatively speaking HUGE! Based on the images from the website, it's a majority of the aircraft. I have a hard time looking at the images of the Storm Talon and not thinking of this:

That's about as much as I said say based on the preview images. My next posting will be after I receive my model.

Surprised you didn't mention the gigantic assault cannon w/ landing gear on the bottom. It's like a razorback turret strapped to the bottom! With a little modding, I think the model can be great. Too bad it's C:SM only...

I believe that it is an available unit to all Space Marine armies. I could be wrong though.

My biggest concern with this kit in terms of design is that underside turret. Whoever decided it was a good idea to put a hinge in the middle of an assault cannon needs to have their head examined. And I don't know what those little metal ski-shoes on the side are meant to do, but they definitely aren't any kind of landing gear I'm familiar with.

If anyone is familiar with Red Faction 2, when I see the Storm Talon and what it is supposed to be I imagine Shrike's personal gunship. Like maverike_prime's photoshop I feel the Storm Raven chassis would have been better, exchanging the side mounted hurricane bolters for predator sponsons. That leaves a lot of room to work with. Still worried about the transport capacity? Well now you have room for extra weapons, missiles, and all sorts of various stuff that can be used as an excuse to remove it. If we think of the Storm Raven as a rhino this is the predator.

I'm just saying that GW restricted it to that specific Codex. If you want to have it in your own army, I'm not going to stop you. Tournaments might, and so will the rule Nazis, but since I am neither, I was just repeating what GW said on their blog.

And I agree, if I ever get enough money to splurge on supplies, I'm building that conversion of Maverike's. Of course with the usual skulls and bodies being dragged on chains in the typical Night Lords fashion. Maybe plaster one or two across the nose, like in Serenity.

Bit of a clash, this. On the blog it mentions Codex Space Marines unit (so intimating not BA ,SW etc etc) and yet I have the two pages of White Dwarf rules open in front of me (p66 and 67, UK WD no. 390) and can see no mention of such a restriction, which is where one might have reasonably assumed that it would be.

Confusing.

Does call to mind the glorious Air-Cav image of a Stormraven being escorted by a Talon, though!

I haven't gotten my White Dwarf yet, so please correct me if I am wrong but isn't the Storm Talon listed as an update specifically to Codex: Space marines?

If they could be fielded by other SM codices, you'd find pictures of BA/GK/DA/SW... painted storm talon in WD. In fact, it's not the case.

Not that I can find. :)

Base Cost, Vehicle Type, Wargear, Special Rules and upgrade options are all listed on p67.

P. 66 has a brief piece of 'historical' blurb a la other Codex entries, a piece of artwork, descriptions of what the special rules and so forth do, but no mention of any 'Chapter Restrictions', to use a phrase. None whatsoever.

Confusing.

Vesper has a good point, though.

It has to have some kind of delineation for what Codex it applies to. Without it, it could go into any Codex, lol. Hello Tyranid Storm Talon.

Now, let it be said that crappy editing is not to be overlooked on the part of the White Dwarf staff.

If it's meant as a blanket update to all Cpace Marine Codices, then technically CSM gets one too. But I wouldn't know what White Dwarf says on the matter since I don't have one. I just know what GW said on their blog. Which one takes precedence over the other, I wouldn't know.

I'm only reporting what is in the WD article, any omissions are for other people to wonder/argue/moan about. :P

*** Edit: actually, my apologies to all. The restriction is not in the unit listing/codex entry where it seems a safe assumption that it should and indeed ought to be. The restriction is mentioned inside the front cover of the WD itself....

I guess that GW could improve on their placement of important information ***

Yet again GW have managed to make another butt ugly SM flyer. I don't understand how and why they keep on doing it?! Unlike the StormRaven I think this has the scope to be modded to look half decent but as a StormRaven, I'm also thinking something like a mechwarrior look alike kit bash. I will be using my LS Tempest as a counts as StormTalon....looks way better (and I already have one).

Regardless of its placement, the White Dwarf does specifically say "Official update to Codex: Space Marines on page 66".

I think this will be interesting and worthwhile, maverike_prime, looking forward to what you think.

After looking at the video on GW's site, I think I can be happy with this model after making two small mods. Move the fixed chin pods to the wing tips. Then split and move the assault cannons to the now vacant chin pods. That will add enough width, and eliminate the chin tumor that is the current assault cannon setup.

Well as I said, I placed the advanced order and the model is released on the 2nd so I'm hoping to have it like the 4th or 5th of June. I hadn't originally intended it this way, but the fact that all of you guys are posting your thoughts about the model based on the preview images before I can do the review of the model itself might be a nice little bonus in itself. This way I can incorporate your thoughts into my review process. StrayCatt was talking about the mod ideas he has in mind for it. I can look at the model in those terms and provide information based on that. Like wise my quick and dirty photoshop edit seems to generating some hype and interest. Another possible conversion I can look at the model in light of.

Well done Maverick-Prime, I really like your kit-bash with the Stormraven. Though it would definately be another flyer, it looks a whole lot better than both of GW's original kits you are using.

But I still think, that the cockpit part needs more Marine'ish features. Too much glass for my opinion.

If you enclose the cockpit a bit more to give it a less fragile, more armored feel and stick a new name on it, your design will be winner. Call it Storm-whatever-bird-of-prey-wasn't-taken-yet ;-)

I'd go more in this direction for a Stormtalon:
