Chapter Master Whitmore.

As High Marshal, Helbrecht is the Black Templars equivalent of a Chapter Master. If Whitmore is going to be Chapter Master, then either Helbrecht needs to go, or the Templars need a Successor Chapter for Whitmore to lead. (Any ideas for the name of this Americanized Black Templars successor? Maybe "Ebony Knights" or "Obsidian Knights", after the USMC fighter squadron that Will Smith's character served in?)

Well, between project delivery and what not, the Knights Templar have begun to achieve operational status.

I present to you "Red Dawn"...and if you are wondering, the answer is "yes".

Now, there is one little bit that isn't finished on "Red Dawn", nor his sister, which is the smaller heraldic shield that covers the shoulder join on the left side.

Unfortunately, that will have to wait until after the ETL. After doing some research on 11th century Byzantine religious art, I've decided to put something of that nature on the shields and that's just going take some practice and experimentation, which I don't currently have the time for.

So that puts me at 50% of my vow. Thankfully the second half isn't too far behind.

Cheers,

So this idea ended up being doable.

I present to you, the Emperor as Avenging Angel, with the book of Imperial Truth and his flaming sword.

It looks better at a distance. After I attach it to Red Dawn, I'll take another shot.

  • 2 months later...

So, after watching a pretty fun Tabletop Tactics video batrep, I decided to start my Kill team.

I'm basing it on the characters in the McNeill "Priests of Mars" series and I'll be focusing on the five crusaders (sans the Apothecary for now) as described in the first book.

Brother Sergeant Tanna

He is described as having a beard and a widow's peak, which I thought interesting enough to model, so he'll be the only member without a helmet on.

Now the next guy is going to be a comms specialist, but I haven't decided what his name will be. I have the pose mostly sorted out, but I'm looking for an auspex and have only found the Devastator version which turns out to be in the other hand...sigh....

Anyway, this is how far I've gotten with him.

More to come...

Ok, here's my Kill Team in all of it's unpainted glory.

I also have to say that I really enjoyed this exercise as it gave me a nice break from the other projects I have going on, but more importantly, I could focus on just building five guys. Part of this exercise was to give me a chance to personalize the individuals to a degree that I would not normally because I am focused on the "en masse" effect of a full army.

With a Kill team, I can do little things like add grenades, ammo pouches, individual poses that help define that trooper, and in this case true scale the whole team up (using the Doghouse model for the most part), which would be cost prohibitive for an entire army. The other consideration with "true scaling" is what do you do with your vehicles? It seems odd to spend a lot of getting your infantry to the right scale and then leave your rhinos and whatnot the same.

Kill team doesn't care about that as far as I can tell.

From a planning perspective, I decided to just go with the five members who made the jump into the Halo Scar, sans the Apothecary (Auiden). That seems to get me a usable KT, though I do have a question for later.

Now, on to the minis...

The entire team, Yael, Tanna (primed), Bracha, Atticus Varda Emperor's Champion, and Issur.

The newest members

Yael - Described as the newest member of the crusade, recently promoted to initiate, favored by the Marshal, seems to desire to prove his worth to his more experienced brethren. So I tried to give him a slightly different pose, be it impractical or not, as a way to convey his individuality and style. Also, when he sparred with Magos Dahan, he fought with his chainsword and a combat knife.

gallery_15184_7227_25745.jpg

Issur - If I am remembering him correctly, is a recognized bladesman, but did not receive the Emperor's vision and therefore did not get to become the Crusade's champion. There is a certain level of resentment in him about that. I opted to give him a fairly standard pose to represent his "I don't like what happened, but I am still a Templar" attitude.

gallery_15184_7227_210656.jpg

Bracha - I made Bracha the comms guy because I was running out of names and slots for story/game roles. As soon as Brother Mo and I can meet up, I'll be able to get the auspex he will be holding in his hand.

gallery_15184_7227_121267.jpg

Atticus Varda (Emperor's Champion) - Oddly, he is not the best bladesman in the crusade, Issur is. Yet he received the vision. Originally, I wanted to have him holding a two handed blade (from the GK), but just couldn't find a reasonable way to work the arms. Since he is described as wearing visibly more ornate armor, along with the FW Imperial Fist Brethren bits, I'll very likely give him a fair amount of scripting on his armor.

And now the "true scaling" effect...

With a regular pre-Primaris marine

gallery_15184_7227_591105.jpg

And a normally scaled human

gallery_15184_7227_274215.jpg

As you can see, the KT doesn't scale well with the rest of my army, so they most likely would never be mixed in for a game. However, standing next to a human scaled figure, really brings out how beastly looking a standard Space Marine is and why humans don't/shouldn't mess with them. I think this works very well with the scale of KT and will certainly emphasize how different they are to the other races.

Now to my question:

I have what I need to fulfill the story part of my KT and I'm very satisfied with that result.

However, although I've not played a game yet, it would seem to make sense to add a trooper with a flamer just out of general principle. KT is a skirmish game, my KT is designed and built to operate as a single unit, close to the target, then kill it. The additional firepower for run-ins against potential hordes seems to be a logical solution for resolving that problem.

Has anyone used flamers in their games? Any feedback?

Cheers,

Your modeling skills continue to astonish me. Hat off to you.

Well, thank you very much, but I do have to say that all the hard work was done by people a lot smarter than me.

Although the back of the torso is the most problematical part of the conversion (requires three different cuts), the rest of the conversion is pretty straightforward. Unlike some true scaling techniques, cost aside, I wouldn't try to dissuade anyone from trying this one.

I have heard from others that flamers are a good thing in KT, so I have one more guy to make, before I can start painting.

Thank you for the feedback all!

Cheers,

Wow - that's awesome! I'm thinking that KT will be the perfect vehicle for my BT desires at some point. Maybe I'll even make a crusade when I get round to acquiring the Upgrade Kit.

Anyway, to answer your question on flamers they are very strong if coupled with the demolition specialism. Getting obscuring (-1 to hit, -1 to injury / take out of action rolls) is very common and at level 1 you are +1 to wound against such targets and can spend a CP for a further +1. And, of course, ignoring to hit. CC is also strong, and flmaers will put off any attacker. So flamers can be deadly.

That said, AP is huge in KT. It's great having marines which feel incredibly strong. So you'll have like 3 cultists blasting away, scoring hits, but the 3+ save just keeps your guy standing. Flamers suffer here, however. Against GK or DG, you'd be better off with plasma. However, against Harlequins, IG or other squishy armies it's a real threat.

So, that's where the roster comes in. what I intend to do is, as your roster can consist of many more units than can fit in a kill team, have multiple specialists with magnetised load outs. Only one Tac gunner can take a flamer or plasma, so I'll have Brother A with the flamer and Brother B with the plasma on the roster, which is just a single model who requires a swap of the old arms / guns between battles.

Post errata, you can take a medical specialist, so there's your apothecary too.

Also, if you want your dudes to use their chainswords and be more effective in melee you might want to *prepares to duck behind cover* run them as CSM *ducks behind cover*.

Hah, you jest, yes? ;)

I'd be more likely to run them as SW, than heretics. That being said, thank you for the information.

A friend of mine had a recent game with his Dark Eldar vs. DW and basically tabled the DW because as he put it, "if I shoot farther than you do and am faster than you, how are you going to stop me?"

A good question and something that also carries over to regular 40K. My answer has always been, bring things that have longer range than the DE, so it would seem that adding a heavy bolter armed specialist wouldn't be a bad thing to do.

As someone who plays DE and got tabled by the (even quicker) Harlequins, I can agree!

SW use the same generic rules as all Adeptus Astartes in KT. There are no options for cc, unfortunately, except your Tac sarg and neophytes.

Good luck with it, personally I love KT specifically for the crafting of detailed, characterful models. Some folks just want to roll dice, but KT brings out the 'ah, so what's the story behind your team?'. Adds a lot of value to the hobby I see less in full scale 40k.

Great work on the kill team. While, I haven't read Priests of Mars, I'm sure you did an excellent work of capturing the characters' character idiosyncrasies in your conversions. The models are well-executed, the choice of bits, the poses, the green stuff work - it all adds up perfectly and results in a squad of Marines which definitely stand out from the crowd of regular models and the recent streak of GW's 'unique' Lieutenants.

I also totally agree with your view on the nature of models for kill team - overall they're a great way to introduce true scale (or even Primaris) Marines to your collection and experiment with conversions.

However, I also must confess that I've missed your posts from July, showing the completed ETL vow. And wow, do these Knights look amazing. And the freehand rendered me speechless; the selection of colours seems fresh and gives the heraldry a nice watercolour look; it also blends perfectly with the colour scheme for the mechs. And the quality of the freehand, looking so well in the extreme close-up, must be mind-blowing "in person" (or at a distance).
