In the company of Ravens: SG's ETL VoW

Recommended Posts

Well, I thought I should join the bandwagon and make a vow too .. and keep up the fashion of starting an ETL WIP thread.

The vow is as follows:

Ravenwing Attack Squadron 1 = 430 points

Ravenwing Bikes x 6 = 220

Sergeant with Powerfist, Meltabomb Plasmapistol = 45

Biker with Meltagun & Biker with Flamer = 15

Attack bike with multimelta

Landspeeder Tornado

Ravenwing Attack Squadron 2 = 420 points

Ravenwing Bikes x 6 = 220

Sergeant with Powerweapon, Meltabomb Plasmapistol = 35

Biker with Meltagun & Biker with Flamer = 15

Attack bike with multimelta

Landspeeder Tornado

Total pledge = 850 points

I plan to arm the no specialist bikers with either a boltpistol or a chainsword to keep each of the bikers in each 6 man squadron different. Decided not to touch greenstuff as I do not wish to waste time sculpting rather spend the time painting. Also discovered the older version of the LS in the original RW box is an absolute nightmare as the parts just don't fit together. On the otherjhand the newer incarnation of the LS is a delight to fix.

Phase 2 is up: Black undercoat.. I guess I am halfway through painting!!! :o

Thanks for the encouragement guys..... and the advice..... Sadly Valejo is no go as I have far too many GW paitn pots and am going to use them..

I will hopefully start doing more painting on the coming weekend... first would be the enduring boltgun metal + badab black wash for al the metalics -hubs, engines, gun barels etc then on it's detailing.. No red gun casings.. may be green or black.

The KISS principle....

Dark grey is about a 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey. For that quantity of black I think I would just mix up a pot and keep it handy...

And I like the red. Its the only color on the damned things....

Thanks brother dean, i might just do that.... someone suggested a subtle addition of blue to it... worth it or not?

I will keep the red for the chainsword casings, eye sockets, lenses and frag grenades.... probably keep the gun casings black.... Even the mudguard edges that most paint boltgun metal, i want to leave black...mainly to keep everything combat dull as possible.. :P

Up to you brother. Vallejo Dark Grey does seem to have a very slight blue in it but when I hit it with Codex for the final highlight the blue goes away...

[shameless plug] Black is what I am working on at the mo:

Flash for highlights

That's a lot of work you have there TSG, I can't wait to see them finished.

BTW, my casings will be black too but I like red and green also. Brother Elmo has some nice dark red ones that don't look garish FTW.

Garish - thanks S, complement me thinks :P

Go red - you know it makes sense ;)

Good luck SG.

I know you said you don't like the red gun casings... but I'm going to go ahead and say it's worth considering. I have significantly more red, as these are my AoV bikes, but I still think it's a good color with so much black. Also, a little blue in your grey helps, I think. I've seen black guys just highlighted with neutral grey, and I don't much care for it. I use Adeptus Battlegrey as I think it's got just the right amount of blue.

  • 1 month later...

Almost exactly two months since the last update I post here to say i have managed to complete my vow. Before the pictures come short description of my aims. I have always wanted to paint up a Ravenwing Army and the ETL gave me the opportunity. I wanted to capture the brooding dark menace of the ravenwing and hence had at the beginning resolved to keep it mostly black with little in the way of bright colours. I was inspired by another brother on this forum (can't remember who) who displayed his RW army painted in a similar fashion. No boltgun/silver edges to the bikes mudguard etc. I also decided against the RW flagpoles as well as the white feathers on the front facade except for the squad leaders.

I discovered a RW biker I had painted up in 1998 when I first got in to 40K when I hadn't yet learned of washes and dry brushing.... The bright colours are so resplendant that I might mistake it for a Slaaneshi noisemarine!!! This is what I was hoping to avoid....

Anyway here is the finished vow.....

“I, Shadow Guard, Kepper of the Fortress and Chapter Master of the Angels Revenant Chapter answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete two complete Ravenwing Attack Squadrons from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 850 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to the Lion and the Legio Unforgiven and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end”

Sergeant has powerfist and his plasmapistol is on the front of the bike between the two boltguns.

Ravenwing Attack Squadron 2

Sergeant armed with a plasma pistol. His power axe is stored in front, stuck to the mudguard of the front wheel.

Three confessions:

1. I have decided not to place squadron number markings as yet simply because I wish to wait until Codex dark Angels is released in case GW change the squadron structures...

2. Conscious effort to keep everythin dark and non shiny. I thought of keeping the RW emblems to a minimum and also in grey rather than white... similar to the low-visibility marking the US Navy uses... but stuck to the ahite as there isn't much on the bikes. Also I intended not to use silver/boltgun metals to much of the metalic areas of the bikes and speeders, inluding the bumper bars of the latter. Just trialling extremely sybtle grey/blue highlights but that would be when i finish the whole RW project.

3. I armed the two landspeeders with multimetas. I just realised that the LS in the Attack squadrons are armed with AC and HB while only those on the Support Squadrons have the choice of upgrading the Hb to a MM. I guess we'd take the MMs as a "counts as" HB until i do my next two Landspeeders which i can swap around.

For now I consider the vow complete.

The Lion be praised and the Emperor be Blessed!

Did now... *blood pressure goes through the roof - secondary heart gives way*

Not sure if you noticed Cap, but if you look closely at the first Sergeant with the Powerfist, you might notice the "old style" plasma pistol sitting on the "dashboard"... I'll try and get more close ups later once the contest is done! I wonder what i shold name this particular sergeant?.... veteran Sergeant Semp? :cuss
