Celestial Tigers - Art Scale? Or something like it...

Armond

Recommended Posts

Ok, two shots of the shoulder pad with the GS Chapter Badge, I think it needs work though... Got some new putty, ProCreate, was told it files great and allows for sharper edges. So going to give that a go and make a badge on an actual shoulder pad and then create a mold from there.

Some C&C would be nice! Thanks in advance! BTW it is supposed to be a Sabertooth Tiger. Which is why the canines are so long!

I think actually Armond is going for for a Korean feel, rather than Chinese, if I read his IA article correctly.

I had a similar idea awhile ago, and was planning to use the 8 symbols of the I-Ching to denote my guys. 8 squads of 8, using every symbol in the I-Ching, but then I realized you can't take special or heavy weapons in that way, so it wouldn't have been very practical on the table top.

Have you considered tweaking the Um Yang symbol for your army? It makes sense that such a strong cultural symbol would last that far into the future, with only modest changes. Or maybe use some of the symbols from the I-Ching (Eom Gwae, Gon Gwae, Gam Gwae, etc...) to denote specialist weaponry or ranks? They could add even more flavor to your army. Each one has some type of elemental meaning (fire, wind, water, etc.) and the meanings change when you combine them with each other. The meltas or flamers could sport the fire gwae, for example.

I saw that you started with a red and white color scheme in your IA article; I think some spot colors of red and blue would look cool on your guys too.

Perhaps I have incorrectly assumed that you are Korean, but if you by any chance know some Han geul, that would look sweet as drop caps in your script, albeit with some tweaks to the letters so they're not instantly recognizable as modern Korean.

Anyway, sorry to prattle. They look great so far. I can't wait to see them painted.

I take it from the names of the battle-brothers that this chapter has a Chinese air to it? That's interesting, not something you see very often.

Korean would be my little bit of inspiration. Glad you think it is interesting, you should check out my IA for some insight.

@Captain Hwarang, first off you have a very Korean name haha. Maybe the I Ching idea would work for Chaos? I did think about the Um Yang and throwing a bit of a twist. Maybe use the goldish/yellow color with black on the other end, symbolizing the cycle of night and day(yellow for the sun and it would fit my Chapter colors).

I am half Korean, but know no Hangul whatsoever. I use a translator. Such as with the Horangi part of my fluff. I am thinking of using the number 4 for the 4th Company, which I am modelling currently, and putting it on the right shoulder pad or knee depending. I am not totally finished with these guys, they are the Command Company afterall. The Tactical squads will be more plain, simple even.

Thanks for the ideas! Glad to see someone likes them!

Yeah, the name is left over from when I first had the idea I described above, and thought it was a fun name. Of course, the project never got off the ground, and I never posted anything until recently, and am therefore stuck with an irrelevant username. Alas.

Just an FYI regarding the number 4: Basically, "Four" and "death" are homophones in spoken Chinese and in sino-korean characters, both being pronounced "shi," an being distinguished by different characters, and 4 is considered a very unlucky, bad number. I'm pretty sure the superstition holds true in Korean culture as well, so that might be something to consider, if you were planning on using Sino-Korean characters to represent the number "4."

And I'm definitely no the only who likes them. They're great. Still looking forward to that paint.

Not sure just how relevant the "unlucky" number is nowadays. My mother has not noted any aversion to it at all. But if it is "unlucky" then it would fit the 4th Company, seeing as they were dealt a very harsh blow, just read my IA's fluff and you will see what I mean, specifically the timeline I mean.

I like the info you are throwing out, gives me some ideas. I worked on an Un Yang today, will file it in the next few days and maybe use it for the command squad instead of a skull or something.

Yeah, the 4 thing is a little bit old school I think; none of my friends have any aversion to it either. I don't think it's really any more of a superstition than the number 13 in western culture. Anyway, it sounds like it will fit nicely with your fluff.

I'm looking forward to seeing the sculpted Um Yang.

By the way, how hard was it to cover up the terminator legs with green stuff? I working on a tru scale project at the moment as well, and I've just left the terminator legs how they are off the sprue, and just filed down the terminator markings. I like them how they are, to be honest, but I want some where the conversion is a little less obvious. I tried with magic sculpt and ended up with horrible results. Does the green stuff just stick to the model or do you have to glue it also? THanks.

Keep up the good work man.

On my Phone sO this is a short reply. Check out masteroftheforge.com for the tutorial i used. Will get the um yang pick up later if I can!

Ok, finally have time to sit at a computer for a sec. The legs weren't too bad, and take the advice of the guy who runs MOTF, and get some clay shapers. It makes things way easier.

Here are some pics, and of course the Um Yang will be included. Thinking of using it to be Company specific, or perhaps a universal symbol for the right shoulder pads. Haven't decided. I do know, if anything is to be done with it, at a minimum the Command Squad will be sporting them!

Primed and ready for paint... Also have 16 pairs of legs I am working on as well as the same number of torsos. So a 10 man tactical squad and a 6 man vanguard squad. Just need to reposition some legs and whatnot.

Anyway, current primered pics:

Sigh... Pulled out my brushes, they all lok messed up from jumbling around during my pcs. Afraid I am going to have to buy a new set. Ugh more money wasted on something other than more models.

Gonna have to check them out sometime this week I suppose. Thanks for the heads up. Guess it was time for new brushes anyway. I honk I have one of the slightly thicker brushes for coverage still in good shape, will have to check. I have all the paints I plan on using out and ready to go.

Not sure on basing. Thinking rocky, snowy, with some vegetation. Similar to LoTRs scenes who in New Zealand.

They look great man! Sorry to hear about your brushes. I've found some great brushes at Michael's recently. You would think they would be too big, but I found a lot of great stuff there. Not sure how available they are up in Alaska though.

What's your primer? Looks very smooth.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is a small update:

The beginnings of a ten Astartes strong Tactical Squad. This one will have the Sgt with a power weapon, a member with Plasma Gun, and a member with a Flamer. The Sgt is seen with the skull and scroll on his right leg and studded helm from Dreadnought Sprue. Have also incorporated the Um Yang into the models. I think the next ten will have them on their kneepads, greaves, or elsewhere and I will mix and match since the next squad will be another tactical squad. It will break them up a bit, instead of all of them with the Um Yang in the same place. I wasn't thinking at the time.

Some members are slightly taller due to standing with their legs closer together, others are shorter due to kneeling a more braced stance.

Anyway, C&C is welcome!

Slowly but surely. Half of them have their bolter. 3 more with bolters soon, 1 with plasma, 1 with flamer. Of course one of the three needing bolters is the Sgt. Should get them done this weekend and all.

Then, I think I want to work on 6 Vanguard Vets. But I need to snag a FW backpack for the Sgt, and a few choice bits. I think I want 3 to have Storm Shields, including the Sgt. 1 of the three will have a Power Fist while the Sgt will get a Power weapon. Going to magnetize the jump packs so I can have some options.

Looking good man! I think the UM Yang on the chest looks great. Great choice of location.

I also, I had another look at your primed squad, and I forgot to mention earlier that the chapter symbol looks a lot better/smoother now that it's been primed. It looked good before, but now it just looks like it came off a sprue with that symbol Good work.

I'm anxious to see if you paint as well as you model!

Hey dude, looking great!! You've made it further than I did with my TS stuff. The only suggestion I have involves the dude with Tartaros legs. I'd extend his chest armour into the groin armour, kinda like mkIII plate, imo it looks a little odd at the moment.

Cheers, and I'll be following,

Jono

Point taken, I see what you mean, I need to do something about it I suppose. The thing is, the models are primed already, that makes me aggravated. I would have to prime just that section, but I will take a gander and go from there!
