Strike Force Legacy - A Genesis Chapter Project Log

Welcome all.

I look forward to this fresh start after a busy schedule and reluctance derailed my last attempt to assemble a power-armored army. While I can't promise more of my time, I can promise more updates. For those that were following my progress on the Inheritors, unfortunately, there will be no more. Right now I don't have the time to appropriately tell their story and do it justice. Combine that with my inability to develop a color scheme and here's where I left off - Chapter-less.

Surprisingly, it didn't take long to pick a replacement. I quickly decided after catching glimpses of the Genesis in ADB's Void Stalker. The first of the Primogenitors? Red and Gold? Sign me up. And for whatever reason they haven't generated much of a following and that appeals to me. This log will be full of background and mini-bios on the characters that make up Strike Force Legacy, as well as the application of some new techniques for myself.

++ NEWFOUND - M.41 ++
Telepathic screams echo through the ether - a silhouette of a dying world. Astyanax, Chief Librarian of the Genesis Chapter, gazes far into the depths of the warp searching for a source. The Epistolary peels the fragile fabric of time away from reality, sifting through the psychic energy until he targets its source to a bleeding world. It is a spectacle of gruesome slaughter as he witnesses the hive planet's destruction. Without hesitation word is sent to the Chapter Master. The greenskin filth has returned. Bound by blood, the Genesis are honor-sworn to forever protect those within their domain. Led by Reclusiarch Marchosian, the Second Company is immediately dispatched to eliminate all threats.

Not the strongest writer, but I'd like to provide some kind of narrative throughout Strike Force Legacy. Now onto the pics! I've let my eagerness get the better of me, so I'm missing a total of 3 Marines from the two Tactical squads in SFL.

The majority of III Tactical Squad - led by the aspiring Sergeant Caleus. I'm missing a regular bolter Marine and the flamer specialist to round out these fellas. Minor details still need to be added. A sprinkling of purity seals, ammo pouches, 'nades, and holsters. Also not pleased with the funky midsection of Brother Missile Launcher, so he'll probably be receiving a loincloth of purity.

The grizzled Veteran Sergeant Rubicon leads V Tactical Squad into the heat of battle (minus the heavy weapons Marine). Was my first time converting a left handed Space Marine clutching his boltgun. Also, you may have noticed by now that all the models have been tacked onto their bases, as the desert landscape they will be standing on is going to be created and painted separately.

And the soon to be named Demi-Squad Leaders. Featuring one of the only two Marines that will be helmet-less in the entire force - or so I've planned.

Close ups on two of my favorites.

Was quite pleased with the bolter and gladius. The original barrel was deformed so I carefully cut one from a FW Umbra-pattern bolt pistol and used that in its place.

And a Contemptor pattern Dreadnought. I was really disappointed with the cast quality on this. I'm fairly limited in my ability with greenstuff, (I mean even my gap-filling is atrocious) but I tried my best to cover up any damaged areas and rough spots. I'll need to go back again and smooth some of it out more before a primer coat.

I'm actually still in the process of figuring out the exact units for my first 1,000 points. I have a pretty good idea but some tinkering is being done to compensate for 6th edition changes. I'm currently developing some minor fluff bios for the Sergeants, which should be included in the next update. I would love to hear what you fine folks think, and I'm not promising but I'm hoping to have a fully painted Marine in the next couple weeks while I continue to assemble the army. I'm very excited to tackle the Genesis Chapter and I look forward to this very much. G'day! smile.gif

I look forward to seeing how you go along with this project :) I like most of the poses that you've given your Astartes and I second the Ferrus Manus' request about that head. I want it too.

Best of luck to you!

Ludovic

Looking good so far, love the mix and match with the different armours. Red and gold will look great on these guys!

Just out of curiousity, since your inspiration was Void Stalker, would you possibly be adding a certain LE boarding marine to your army? :(

@ magnefjord: Thanks, man. The helmet is from FW's new Mk. IV Assault Squad. Reminds me of Darth Vader's helmet - Astartes style.

@ Ferrus: Howdy, brother! Long time no see. The head is from the Blood Angels Vanguard Sergeant. Love the expression and hair.

@ Ludo: Thanks dude. See above for the head. :)

@ heathens: Thank you, sir. Your conversions are always an inspiration. I actually won't be including Tolemion, as badass as he was, for he was the Third Company's Champion (I'm modeling the Second). For those of you that have a sharp eye and a good memory, I have included Caleus... a brother of the Genesis Chapter whose eventually destined to meet an end when he encounters a Night Lord named Xarl. ;)

@ Ego: Thanks, I hope to have more work done soon.

@ Cyrox: Funnily enough, you're like the only other current poster that has an affiliation with the Genesis Chapter on here. Sorry for beating you to it, but I look forward to seeing what you come up with as well. Expect my support, we are few in number! :D

Right now I'm waiting on some bits in the mail, including parts for my counts-as Chaplain Cassius. I also ordered a Thunderfire Cannon and cannot wait to begin pumping barrages into the enemy's horde. By next update I will have the Cannon, along with the remaining 3 Tactical Marines built, and hopefully work on the Chaplain will commence soon enough. I'm developing more background and look forward to fleshing out the characters of SFL. Thanks for the support everyone, it's much appreciated.

  • 2 months later...

This isn't the update I want, but this project desperately needs a revival. It's been 3 months and I basically have nothing to show. Progress has been made, though not the progress I'd intended. I looked at the Tactical squads and wasn't entirely satisfied with what I saw. So I butchered more than half and restarted. Pretty big set back when I've been using my hobby time unwisely. Maybe it's the right choice because now they're more evocative of what I had envisioned. Updates will be slow, but hopefully I'll build some momentum and get this log running full bore.

I present to you, the refined versions of Caleus and Rubicon.

+++++

Caleus: The young, ambitious Caleus leads 3rd Tactical Squad. He has quickly established a reputation among the more veteran brothers for the principles he holds true. Though never one to disregard objectives or recklessly endanger his own squad mates, Caleus has been noted as seeking out enemy leaders on more than one occasion. Inspired by the legends of his Chapter, he's often found studying the archives and obsessing over details of battles fought in antiquity. The Librarium has prophesied that he is destined for greatness. Though an exceptional swordsman, the aspiring Sergeant has much to learn if he desires to lead his own battle-company one day.

I'm still figuring out how to use the camera well enough on my iPhone, but these aren't too shabby. For whatever reason the first photo's a little blurry. I'm not set on Caleus' legs, but I wanted an at rest pose with Mk. VII greaves. What do you think?

Rubicon: Commanding 5th Tactical squad for over a century of bloodshed, Rubicon is one of the Captain's closest advisors. He wields the Company's sole plasma pistol, Arx Helios - an ancient, yet devastating weapon that hurdles bursts of sunfire. It is Rubicon's responsibility to lead by example and he has demonstrated himself to be the "old warhorse" of Second Company. The Veteran Sergeant's tactical wisdom alone has ended wars before they've even begun. His chainsword bloodied, banner rippling, and bronzed grille glinting, Rubicon can be spotted in the front of the vanguard - his customary position in the Company's spearhead attacks.

The greenstuff work on Rubicon is a little rough. I'll be fixing that before priming. I'm a big fan of the old school crusader feel he emanates.

Meet Caracalla. Demi-squad Leader of Fifth Tactical Squad. This handsome young fellow is known for his borderline sadistic conduct. He enjoys suffering and long walks on the bloody beaches of Armageddon. His favorite weapon is his beloved chainsword. He likes inflicting pain with it. His brothers have grudgingly bestowed the moniker of Executioner upon him - for he often gets the nod to end lives in a suitably gruesome fashion. No one cares much for Caracalla... You get gist. ^_^

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn230/the_illuminator/caracalla3.jpg

The puritan in me didn't want to give Caracalla a sword but in the end I relented. The character that I wanted to create was just begging for one. I figure that in certain capacities the Codex will allow enough flexibility to equip Demi-squad leaders with close combat weaponry. And since the Second is currently engaged in conflict with the greenskins it's only right. In game terms, he'll just count as having another bolter like his buddies. I'd like to expand his backstory further in the future.

And all three posing for the camera.

The next post will feature more of the redone regulars from the Tacticals. Hopefully this weekend. Strike Force Legacy is back. :)

Finally, an update. Funny, I was thinking of PM'ing you to ask about progress just yesterday, seems to have worked in an unseen way :)

Anyway, on to the models. They are gorgeous. Simple as. I'd love to a bitz box as full as yours!

Looking forward to seeing the next update! All the best ^_^

First, I am so glad to see you returning to this, I was getting worried as hell you'd ditched this project.

Second, Caracalla is ^_^ scary, man. Seriously aggressive posture and intimidating as hell; he may very well be adopted by the Marines Malevolent in the future. You've been warned.

Let's see some more, bro!

More of the universally positive response seen above from me, Darth :)

These marines are fantastic and I look forward to seeing more of them. The range of bits chosen, the poses, the little fluff nuggets all make for one soon to be extremely characterful force.

Keep up the good work Brother :)

Wish I had the drive to individualise each marine as you have done.

They look exceptional and the time and effort you have spent selecting and matching different pieces from the SM range makes for a truely unique and interesting force.

Not sure if I missed it, but how will you be painting them?

Cheers,

Mike.

Edit:

Re-read the first post and you mention red and gold as thier colours, sounds intriguing....

Wow, I'm a little shocked by such a positive response! ;)

@ Ludo: Thanks, man. My bits box isn't that big quite honestly. I just coax my girlfriend into thinking that she'll be getting her shoes or makeup the following week, and then I place large bits orders on ebay.

@ Heathens: Thanks, bro. Glad I was able to convey what I envisaged, would love to see something similar in the black and yellow of your boys.

@ Captain Semper: Much appreciated. Caracalla seems to be a favorite. This pleases me.

@ Blind: Great to see a reply from someone as skilled as you, man. As Dallo said, it's from the AoBR Captain. Unfortunately, I canned that Marine as I was never fully convinced with him. Maybe an updated version will sneak back into the army.

@ Demon2027, Brother Dallo, Gawain Veteris, DarkAngelDelight, EgoDraconumNigrorum, Amulius, and chaplainmikey: Thank you all so much for the replies, your praise is humbling. I was even inspired enough to update this before the weekend was over! Definitely let me hear your thoughts on the newest additions.

@ spu00sed: Thanks! It's meant to be drawn cross-body. Think Doc Holliday from Tombstone. Caracalla's a fan of the old Wild West.

There's a total of 13 completely built Marines, and I have another 6 in pieces on my desk. I've got some bits in the mail so there won't be much more work until they arrive. I'm currently working on the missile launcher Marine and the results are really unimaginative. Let it be known that I no longer like missile launchers. Any suggestions? I've ruled out the firing from a knee pose, I see that too often.

III Tactical Squad

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn230/the_illuminator/tac1wip1.jpg

The legs of the Marine on the far right we're difficult to work with (since both arms are in front of the body), but I think the result looks decent. After looking at this picture it also occurred to me that I'm severely lacking in Mk. VII helmets, which are the most predominant and archetypal of power armor. More of the final members will be wearing them to compensate. I keep having to remind myself that this is 40k, not 30k with all the craze going on right now.

V Tactical Squad

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn230/the_illuminator/tac2wip1.jpg

Looking at Rubicon now, I'll definitely be replacing his torso with one of the newer Mk. III "Legion" ones when they're released. I'm very happy with the flamer Marine, he might be one of my personal favorites.

++++

The Chaplain is at about 50% right now, but I don't want to show him just yet. For the parts of him I really like, there's just as many I'm not keen of. Particularly the legs. We'll see what happens. I'm researching gold recipes right now. Drop a line if you've got a winner.

Watch this space for more progress, your comments and criticism is what drives me to be a better hobbyist! Thanks, frater. ;)
