Black Like My Soul

That's a very impressively magnetized fiend. I love the way the hades cannons look in that setup. The posing work you've done and the addition of the tail and everything is just great, you've changed the character of the kit completely.

Thank you, all for your kind words!

I still haven't decided what I'm going to do for my second fiend. Another more or less the same? Or something else? My anti chorus line sentiment makes me inclined to try something radically different, but I don't really have any better ideas at the moment. I do have an unassembled soul grinder kit that I might mix and match bits from, but I would need to be sure I could still get a second full model out of it - I can't justify cannibalizing two expensive kits for a single extra fiend....

Then again, now that we can summon daemons via the psychic phase, I'm no longer sure what I really need the grinder for in the first place. My overall plan is to ally CSMs with the upcoming revised vracks list, and then bring daemons via malefic, replacing my old plan of CSMs with daemon allies. But the grinder can't be conjured... Maybe I could use leftover skaven bits from the giant spawn conversion to make a plague hulk? Hrm....

Anyway, with work today and some class work to start on, I don't have much time to spend on the fiend. So my minimal goal for the day is to paint over the magnets in liquid greenstuff (to help the paint adhere) and, if the weather clears up, get it primed.

EDIT: I failed, no progress yesterday. Yesterday's goals are now today's goals.

Magnet bits are primed, body is primed, undercoated, and has texture paint applied to the base. Only about a week after I had intended to get this far, but that's why my pledge is deliberately limited in nature.

I can see in the flash that I missed some spots on the base.  Really should have at least undercoated the base and the model separately.  Oh, well.  I'm not too concerned, as there's a lot of painting left to do on the base, I'm pretty sure it'll get satisfactorily covered by the time I'm done with it.

Got some painting in today, the base is about 80% done:

Looks good, liking the rust. Any powders in that, or just paints?

the metal bits are base coat dull orange (jokaero?), stippled with boltgunnish p3, washed with earthshade, stippled again, washed lightly, patchily, with typhus corrosion, stippled again, then again with brighter silver, then again with ryza rust.

More painting progress on the fiend.  Base is done, initial grey brushing, and basecoat on metal areas / undercoat on the trim:

Long ways yet to go, but at least I'm making progress.

Base coated the gold trim - ugh what a pain.  Even over the silver it took two coats, and it's still patchy in areas - though that should be covered up in subsequent steps.  I also made more than the usual quota of errors that will need touching up, which is frustrating.

Started the base coat on the flesh, but didn't get very far on that tonight.  Hopefully should be able to get more done tomorrow.

EDIT: I got a second wind, and finished off base coats.  Just need to do some touch up work, and it'll be ready to start washes and shading.

I think I'm going to end up making the fur black or dark grey.  Not enough black on this black legion war machine.

I'm also going to need to pause his guy and do some test work on wash combinations for the flesh.  Have to walk the dogs & eat breakfast first.

If I can get the body finished today, then I'll be able to paint the magnet bits at work this week (no patients, doctor is out of town).  Which would mean I might actually have enough time to risk a second vow.  Maybe even a soul vow.  I mean, if I do place a second vow, by all rights it should be my rhinos or some cultists, units I actually need for games, but....  I've had something big waiting in the corner for ages, something I once got rid of, but that eventually made its way back to me.  Even if I never get a chance to actually use it, it sure would be cool to have it painted.....

Thin your washes and paint them into the areas you want. Don't be afraid to use every colour wash you have. The colours will more tint the flesh and if you don't cover the whole flesh you can get a natural/daemonic look to it.

It's not a question of 'how to use the washes', so much as 'which combinations of purples, reds, blacks, and browns to use, and in what order'.  A test model is what I need, probably a spare zombie from my fantasy army.  Shouldn't take too long.

Start with the lightest and I'm talking sepia here and build up through greens & reds, all the way up to blue and purple. Avoid black if you can. It's how I did the claw on my Raptor (if you remember that at all). Really add the washes in small amounts. Glazing is the key really.

I know this may sound sad but I'm actually excited to see how it comes out. I really had some fun with it and need to do it more often too.

Initial washes are done:

Next up: highlights.  May or may not finish the body today.

For the second one, have you looked at what skrundle is doing with his? He's flipped the body round, mounted the guns on top and given it three Defiler legs on each side. Looks the nuts.

His spider fiend is a neat idea, and I look forward to seeing where he takes it, but whatever I do will have to support magnetizing it to double as either kind of fiend, and I don't quite see the spider fiend set up working as a mauler as well.

Regardless, I'm not worrying about the second one for a while, yet.
