Black Like My Soul

I love that sorc... I have the old metal one (weighs a bloody ton. I would probably be better off throwing him at my opponent's army and seeing what he could break. lol)

It's kind of a classic sculpt I just don't see anymore. You've done a great job with the army conversion.

This one is the old metal one.  It was a nice sculpt, but short lived.  It was relatively quickly replaced by the current termie lord kit, which, honestly, I'm also a pretty big fan of.

Anyway, another several hours of slow, agonizing progress:

Still vaguely on track for finishing tomorrow.  Fingers crossed.

Work has begun on the Plaguereaper.  So far I've primed it, painted on two layers of black undercoat (once with the tank brush, once with a regular brush to get the parts the big brush missed), and hit it with an initial dark grey overbrush.  Next up is a second overbrush to even that out, then a slightly lighter grey drybrush in some areas, and then it will be time to start the metal bits & treads & such.  Admittedly minimal progress so far, due to lingering family events, but that's all done now, so I should have plenty of time to myself to work on it this week.  In more exciting news, I found my apo templates, so I'll actually be able to try the sucker out once it's done.

Still on track to finish by August first.

The ryza rust is maybe a bit more saturated than I wanted, but nevermind, that'll come down in washes.  Had to glue the side sponson heavy bolters in place - one was too loose and was flopping around, the other too tight and risked damaging the paint job if moved.  The sponson lascannon turrets, forward heavy bolter turrets, and main cannon turret are still unglued.

I undercoat P3 cold steel, though GW equivalents should work.  Then I paint over that with P3 rhulic gold, which has worked slightly better for me than the GW equivalent  Then I wash with black wash (nuln), then brown wash (agrax), then overbrush with the rhulic again, then stain with chestnut or whatever the current equivalent is, then highlight with whatever GW's calling their replacement for shining gold, and then that mixed with a bit of some bright mithrillish silver if I'm feeling extra uppity.

Then studs/bolts get a dab of black and/or brownwash, and get picked out in steel.

Process is similar for the paler, brassy bits, except using P3 brass balls instead of rhulic gold, and that mixed with mithril as the highlight.

Pics so far on the reaper show pre-wash, just the undercoat and base coats.  Had work today, so not much progress, but I did get the initial blackwash on, and will follow up with brownwash and brush steps tomorrow.

In general, i find that gold is garbage to work with, and don't recommend it.  If I weren't such a sucker for the black legion, I'd have dumped it from my pallet ages ago.

Got to love the old chestnut wash. Still have some myself.

Can I recommend using Vallejo Metallic Medium for highlighting gold. Tried it out on my sorcerer and won't be going back to using silver for highlighting again.

Thanks for the heads up. Looked up some of the p3 colors on painting tutorials today and really like their colors. Been using GW / Reaper paints mostly. I've been going Tin Bitz, Aged gold, auric gold with agrax earthshade in between.  My favorite look is a NMM yellow base hit with heavy agrax but i cant commit to it.  Anyways, really dig the work and thanks for the tips!

Progress continues on the plaguereaper:

Next stage is touch ups on the black, then black highlights (edge highlights, and maybe a mid-dark grey on the rivets, then all that will be left is little details - eyes, teeth, skulls, slime/blood effects, etc.

I still haven't figured out quite what I'm going to do with the vats, effect-wise.  A layer of nurgle rot swirled with blood for the blood god?  Or would that be too opaque, and cover up what I've already painted?  Or would that be a good thing, hiding the circular ridge on the upturned lid that makes up the top of the vat?

Maybe instead a thin layer of clear water effects, perhaps with a drop or two of olive green mixed in?  I don't know.

So... instead of painting today, I updated my long neglected homestuck liveblog liveblog on tumblr.  That... is a very bad sign for the possibility of any further painting progress from me before the end of the year.  A very bad sign indeed.

It's suddenly and frankly rather unexpectedly looking like I might be cashing in my ETL chips and checking out of this forum more or less completely until ADB's Abaddon book hits shelves and brings me back.  We'll see how tomorrow goes.

[EDIT] Yup, the 40k spirit's gone, and my hobby energy's been consumed by other endeavors.  I'm packing away the 40k stuff, and shuttering the thread here, at least until ADB's Talon of Horus book sees release.  If you want to reach me between now and then, try my tumblr.

Hey all, just a quick note.  I've fallen on some sudden and unexpected hard financial times.  Won't bore you with the details (mostly just results of my own poor attention to detail, nothing to feel sorry for me over), but as a result I will likely be putting some portions up to and potentially including all of my chaos marine army up for sale in the coming weeks.  The plaguereaper in particular I'll be looking to unload (guess I won't be adding those finishing touches after all).  If there's anything in the thread that any of you might be interested in, painted or unpainted, half converted or otherwise, feel free to send me a PM, and maybe we can work out a deal before I put it up on the ebay.
