Hey guys, I'm new-ish to the Dark Angels(picked up a Ravenwing box when 6th came out) and now with the Dark Vengeance I am stoked to start a new marine chapter(I have 13k+ of Blood Angels:P). For those that did not see, I placed a vow to complete all of the Dark Angels from the Dark Vengeance box set plus two squads of three Ravenwing bikers and my converted Sammael, Master of the Ravenwing. Gonna be tough, but I think this event will help give me the motivation I need to actually buckle down and get my stuff painted(of my 13k+ Blood Angels I think I have between 2k and 3k painted...).
Currently, I have all the models base coated black and have begun work on the Chaplain. I'll post WIP pics when I get home from work today. Also I'll show off my Sammael conversion, which, I think, looks fantastic:)

That's pretty cool. I will pick up my DV box today and get started on my vow. Maybe I can get some inspiration from your conversion to get me going!!!

Very Cool.
I'm interested in watching the progress.
I've picked up my DV set as well, but I have to wait. It's a Christmas Present from my wife.
So, I won't get to work on mine until the Holidays.

Undeadfilth, very cool, great to see some new Dark Angels coming in. I look forward to seeing your work.
One question: are you going to break up your vow some, or do you plan on doing the entire box in a single month? Holy crap if you are planning the later, you'll be painting so much faster than I can. Good luck either way!

Wait, I thought it was only a month challenge. It's longer than that? I'll still try and pump it out in that but I may have to alter my vow if it is a multi-month endeavor:P Or I can just stick with it, would be sick to get it all done well in that allotted time-frame.

Yes, vows are once a month from now until February. So for the DV boxed set, you could vow the Tac Squad in September, the Ravenwing squad in October, the Deathwing squad in November, the Chaplain in December, the Librarian in January, and the Company Master in February. Or mix 'em up, do more than one, just as long as each vow contains full Codex entry units.
Edit: or even units that can be added to, ie, just do the Tac Sgt, three bolter marines and the plasma gun: acceptable Codex unit. Then the following month do the remaining 4 bolters + plasma cannon to finish the full unit out. That's also acceptable. 3 Ravenwing bikers one month. Following month do three more Ravenwing bikers. Then in November complete an Attack Bike and the Speeder in December. All acceptable. Or do the AB + Speeder in the same month, etc. Just as long as the unit finishes in a valid army list configuration, Bob's your uncle.

I know I can paint much faster than one squad a month though:P I mean, a full tactical squad assembly lined shouldn't take longer than a day. It's the special characters that I get really anal with my painting on... I spent about 20 hours painting Astorath the Grim...

Multiple vows per month are also allowed, meaning you could vow the 1st half of the Tac squad, finish with time to spare and then revow the rest of the squad for the same month.

Alright, I have some WIP pics to go up now, including my full vow picture. Here goes.
Full vow group shot:

Converted Sammael:

And Here is the work I have going on my chaplain:

Some of the pics came out better than I thought they would considering I only have my phone to take pics with:P Everyone seems to really like my Sammael convertion, though he's so busy he's going to be a nightmare to paint:P

Good luck on this project.
I just spent a couple of minutes playing "spot the bit" on your Sammi conversion it looks interesting but I think you are right when you say it will be hard to paint.
It may have been worth painting Sammi seperate from the jetbike.

Gah! I am apparantly terrible at updating a WiP thread:P Anyways here is the completed tactical squad(threw in the chaplain for fun).

Critiques and comments always welcome:)

So that makes 11 of 28 completed on my vow. Gotta get cracking:P I have started on the terminators and have 2 of the 5 basecoated in black with their bleached bone base. Once I get the other three based, it should be relatively easy to pick out details then wash and highlight:)

I really like the red you've used. What colour is it if you don't mind me asking?
#16

Single layer of scab red over black undercoat. Keeps it subdued to keep with the darker style of the dark angels:)

I like 'em, you have a nice, clean style, but I do have to ask, are the Chapter and Tactical icons blue? They look somewhat light blue on my screen. If so, what prompted that particular color choice?

It gives something to tie in with the bluish-grey highlights I'll be using on the Ravenwing black armors(you can see an example on the chaplain). the effect is created with a coat of P3 white with a gw azurman blue wash. I quite like the effect.

Got till the end of the month to finish up the 5 termies, libby, company master, and 9 bikers+sammael. Gonna be tough. Hoping to have time to do the Company upgrade I picked up as well:P Trying to paint as often as possible, but of course when I commit to a huge vow that's when everything goes to hell at work and I'm having to work all kinds of overtime>.>

Terminators are getting close to completion(thank the Emperor!). Should be getting up pics tonight when I get off work(I have a nice 12 hr shift ahead of me for the moment...). I'm looking forward to painting the bikers. I won't have to cover black with another color over 90% of a model which will save a TON of time! Admittingly, the Terminators have taken alot longer than my original estimate(damn you Bleached Bone for being a massive pain to get to look decent over black base coat>.>). Anyways, just thought I'd give up update on where I'm at:)

Question- What red did you use for the chaplain? I want to use that on my guy too.
#23
Posted 20 September 2012 - 02:45 PM
GW Scab Red. One coat over black spray paint undercoat. I love the spray I use as it becomes slightly porous upon becoming dry. This allows the paint to be partially absorbed into the undercoat which produces a darker effect with lighter colors or an even darker effect with darker colors. The spray I use is $.99 Walmart spray paint:P Flat Black. Much cheaper than GW's and I like the effect it produces.

Thanks, I believe I have a small pot of that paint somewhere in my left over pile.

I don't have any of GW's new line yet and don't plan on getting any unless I absolutely need to. Guess I don't like change, eh?
