I think one of the great things I liked about RT (and it's immediate expansion books) was that it told a story, it wasn't about the 'mathhammer' and you could do almost anything you wanted. I appreciate why the sprawling nature of RT has been slimmed down, why it's moved in the direction it has, but it's also the reason why I stopped playing and just read the fluff and looked at the pretty miniatures people make (which are far far better than my cack-hands could ever produce!).

this made me go to my closet and cack open the ol' RT book. ah yes, the good old days! I remember when space marines where real badasses. no litanies on their armor, no bling, just the occasional grafitti (anyone else remember "kill kill kill") I remember when space marines cood take shuriken catapults, AND they actually had a mini for it! I remember mole mortars and polymorphine, and, a VERY cool anti-grav tank conversion made out of a deoderant dipenser, plastic spoons and GI Joe guns!
somewhere 40k lost it's grittiness, I personally blame 2nd edition, where special characters were the order of the day. I dream of a throwback edition, where its more freedom, more skirmish, and more grimdark!

I miss you Rogue Trader.

I completely remember "Kil Kil Kil" as my first RTB01 Marine, which was painted as a Blood Angel, with that slogan around the chapter badge. :P

I remember when a carnifex had vehicle rules and marines where not afraid of using camouflage and hills where made of old White Dwarf magazines. I also remember a well placed Bolter round to my Rhino's ammo box blowing the whole thing up and anyone inside. Give and take. lol

I still have that mini, and it's one of my favorites.

Those were Zoid guns not GI.Joe

And these young'uns now with their fancy jump pack rules - back in my day if you even so much as looked at a jump pack it would explode, hurtle your guy 2D6 in a random direction then blow a crater in the landscape.

I have members of a non-power armoured rock band and loads of RT era Chaplains! Bolter with an assault cannon on it Brother? Yes please!

I also have a Dreadnought called Eddie!

The only problem with those old minis was that they were lead, not pewter, and I did a lot of conversions that involved sawing...and dust....that got all over one's hands....and...in the air.... :D

Good article! Thanks KtL!

RT  The little things from all the kitsch and culture! 1911s(AutoGun! It survives into the dark future! >.<), Vincent Black Shadows, the homages to all the different sci-fi/space opera and other oddities. Sigh. Lots of good games with a juiced up 2w Inquisitor or RT with Marine retinue. Alfred you have pretty much summed me up. I play a campaign game with friends with 40k sometimes but we have moved over to the FFG section (we still Inquisitor it up big big tho) of the segmentum. It fights for time with pathfinder though :o My torn covered RT book from 92 or 93 has a place of honor. My first Codex Astartes ^.^ What colorful Marines they were when I look back :D Those darned Rainbows! I do admit, I kind of get a little twinge of sadness when I see people on the board say the RT fluff is no bueno when I think it is awesome and as relevant today as any of the lies we have been fed by Big Brother/GW over the past two decades (for me at least). Yikes, has it been that long!?!? The Emperor is still alive and he can get up. He is just  crazy and the Lords dont want to wake up Papa Hemingway and usurp their own power. I kind of like Horus being on the ground in a bunker instead of being on the Vengeful Spirit or whatever. Like the baddest man in the Galaxy fuelled by 4-Power Awesome® is going to cower on a ship?! Horus?!?! Pffffft. I dont believe it! I like the 'cast out' by the Emperor aspects of the Retreat of the traitors into the Eye.

MR: Haha! Awesome :D I miss the old models! My super Inquisitor was rocking some foul gear like LasCannon Rings, Marine Launcher and other nonsense! If I recall the model I made to represent him was... lacking! Aieee! I was pretty young but it was fun stuff. I miss the Mister Peanut dreads and weird Heavy Metal'esque/Bakshi WWI feel, theme and nutter looking tanks. Like The Wall or Wizards or something in metal.

Still, Space Crusade was the game that impelled me to purchase to the RT book and my first Marine (Bolter with blade. looked cool) and Eldar jetbike and harlequin. Aieee what I wouldn't give for those miniatures!!!! >.< And that Crusade box :(

I don't think I could have gotten into it were the models not plastic, and having only used 'modern' models and such the majority of them just don't suit my sense of aesthetic.
Attack is the only order worth remembering.
