Strike Force Unguis

Hi

So work on My Alpha Legion is painfully slow so I decided to put my hand to something else while I waited for green stuff to dry and stuff. Initially this led me to start a Heresy era Imperial Fist army but adding up the cost had led me to believe that this is an even longer project then the Alpha Legion. Still I have vowed to paint a squad and the vow will be fulfilled. However this WIP is for something else. I started to put together some models together mainly out of boredom, I ended up with some good looking models. After considering several different chapter such as the Minotaurs, Carachardons, and Black Dragons I eventually settled for the Raven Guard, mainly as I found some Forge World bits I got the last time I tried to get back into the hobby. Having put a bit of work in the last couple of nights here is my WIP Shadow Captain. Fluff wise he has led an infiltration team (i.e Vanguards, Assault Marines, and Scouts) to secure a drop zone to allow the delivery of the rest of the strike force (Tactical's and the like). Seems to fit the Raven Guard M.O. while the explaining the precence of the larger force.

Anyway enough rambling here's the WIP Shadow Captain.

I also have the 3 models that started this but they need a bit more work so I porbally won't post them till I have at a combat squads worth.

C&C would be appreciated.

Thanks for the comment. I am proud of the captain, and I am looking forward to painting him. Last night I finished a Veteran Sargent for my Vanguard Veterans. Instead of the normal Corvus helm he has been given the honor of wearing a relic that survived the betrayal at Istvaan V. I thought it would be good to mix things up a bit.

Not sure if the bolt pistol should be aimed a firing pose of if he should be holding it relaxed to mimic the captain. I also considered a storm shield instead of a bolt pistol. The squad will also have a vet with a thunder hammer and a load of lightening claws. Let me know what you think.

Very nice work so far. Nice poses and kit bashing. I like the bit of background to the Mk.IV helm. As for the VV sergeant's pose: What poses do you have planned for the rest of his squad? If they too are going to be in non-fighting poses then keep the (nice) pose you have him in now...however if they're going to be dynamic then I'd go with the pistol raised. With the pose of the body and legs he'll look like he's coolly popping off a shot.

Thanks guys

War Angel: The sword is from the Sanguinary Guard kit, it is black as I am reusing it from elsewhere. The sword is the only bit not from Forgeworld, their Raven Guard stuff is lovely but I don't want to overuse it in the army.

Wicced: The legs did indeed belong to Korvydae but I have re-positioned them and I changed the torso. The shield is from the Limited Edition Forgeworld Boarding Marine. I really like the shape of it.

Loving the second model here too. The helmet looks awesome and the choice of bits for the mini make him look like a real vet.

As for the bolt pistol I would perosnally say have it held up a bit popping off a shot as that will give the model a strong sense of action without compromising the relaxed feel that you want the squad to have.

Cheers

James

Love the work here - that first model curiously reminds me of an Exorcist Captain I put together not too long ago (similar sword, same shield, same mark of armour). I really like that veteran sergeant, too.

Thanks guys, I was wondering if cutting up sternguard and vanguard was going to far, but it does seem to help the models stand out. I may wait and see how the unit looks and then change the bolt pistol arm.

Oslisredan: Would love to see your Exorcist captain, haven't seen many Exorcists

Had a flash of inspiration for a lightening claw dude. Still very WIP but wanted some feed back before I continued. I was going for a scanning the area look, ready to swoop.

Coming up with interesting pose ideas of lightening claws is hard and his hand look very bulky at the moment, but i think once shoulder pads and the jump pack they will visually fit more.

Great pose. Are those the lightning claws from the Wolf Guard model? I am interested to see whether the pads and pack balance it out, as I am looking at doing the same for my White Consuls captain.

He definitely looks like he is scanning. You might want to play with angling the body forward to emphasize the ready to swoop feeling. If he is supposed to be looking down from higher ground, try angling the head down slightly.

Here are links to a couple of fantastic conversions that might give you some further ideas:

Yeah they are but they have been removed and added to normal upper arms. The left one is slightly damaged but I think I can repair it. You can't tell from the pic but he is looking down, I will mess around with the posing of the torso as well

Thanks for the links, those Shrike conversions are crazy, has definitely given me some ideas.

You're going to have to shoot me a message reminding me of that, brother. There is a high chance I'll forget about it without a message as a reminder. :)

Dropped you a message so there is no excuse now :)

nice new project mate!

i agree that a more downwards tilted head would support the "scanning" pose.

not sure about the claws, they look too big for my liking.

Wicced: Yeah the lightening claws are rather large (and they are taken from a PA model). Any way I have added the shoulder pads which bulk the model out a lot. Also took a picture at a better angle to show the downward head. Thoughts?

Got a good idea for the next lightening claw guy and work has started on the thunder hammer guy, but progress has stalled due to Dishonored...

Hi everyone

Been a long time since I have posted due to full on real life (work, open uni, decent x-box games coming out, finding out wife is pregnant, and mate giving me his Spurs season ticket (and kindly took me to the away game :tu: ) for a few week (which was a massive waste of time)) and dabbling with Warhammer FB. However today I got my act together and finished another member of my Vanguard Vets.

Got a bit of clean up and minor green stuff to neaten him up. I haven't given him any raven skulls, and the reason is because, while considered one of the best hunters in the chapter, his pride allowed a enemy to get away. So in penitence he has given up his raven skull thing that most RG wear until he can rectify his mistake. Or something along those lines.

I have also prepared the bases for the next 2 members of the squad, which will be another lightening claw guy and a thunder hammer/storm shield guy. I may make a 6th fella who will have a thunder hammer/storm shield for pure symmetry sake. I have also started painting the captain, well i have undercoated and base coated him (so sprayed black and painted black). Work stopped when my distracted me causing myself to slice off some flesh.

C&C very welcome.

Thanks for the comments.

Artemid: it is supposed to be a statue, part of some imperial ruins. I have tried to add damage to obscure it as an inquisitor. Possibly shouldn't have used a special character but had it spare. Will obviously paint it as stone.
