Iron Warriors Pre and Post heresy blog

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, with the new Betrayal book firmly in my sticky mitts, I've got a hankering to paint up a legion army (not that I have anyone to play against mind)

Now I wanted to be able to use my mini's in a 40k army, as well as 30k, so I wondered what army was best to go for. I was considering Word Bearers, but my love of big artillery pieces and the mk3 iron armour meant there was only ever going to be one winner here, the Iron Warriors! This also meant I could use a fair amount of my 30k models in 40k, and also allows me later on to pick up some of the nice new chaos models and use some IG tanks/fliers as allies.

Now I have to admit my painting skills aren't the best, so no Golden Daemon winning entries here sorry.

My first test piece to see how I got on with the sons of Perturabo (which went surprisingly well I thought) was an old space crusade model, as I have a shed load of them knocking around.

C and C most welcome please! I'm especially keen to learn how to do hazard stripes, as they seem to be an integral part of painting this legion.

Cheers guys!

Ah i see, yeh they need heavy looking armour and the suits are called iron its ment to be. Cool I look forward to seeing your mkIII suits keep up the good work as i love the iron warroirs even though i hate choas, prejudice much.

Oh, I have some of those!

I'm liking the darker than average metallic armour which gives off a more menacing look. Perfect for traitors!

You've done a good job with the hazard stripes too. Any idea what the second models gun is? Flamer, Melta or other??

Nice to hear that you will be using a predominance of MK.III armour. Love that armour and it is prefecct for IW's.

Mike.

Thanks guys! Hoping to have a few mk3's up by end of week.

I went for the darker look as that's how it looked to me from the wiki pic of pre-heresy, plus if they were silver people might mistake them for grey knights ;)

I'm not happy with the hazard stripes, but with a bit of practice I think they'll be fine.

The gun in the second pic is actually a plasma gun from the space crusade box set. there are also missile launchers, assault cannons (which would probably make good rotor cannons) and a commander mini with different weapons options. The expansion pack has conversion beamers, multimeltas, lascannons and tarantulas.

I may use it as a plasma gun, or maybe a volkite weapon.

If anyone wants pics I'm happy to put some up? There ware plenty on ebay

well Here's my post Christmas update!

I was hoping to show you some wip on a fellblade, but it's not had the attention it's deserved yet.

However with me getting the DV box set over the holidays, I present my 40k Iron Warriors and cultists!

Now that IG are also allowed on here I'll be posting some steel legion allies I'm planning as janissaries/miltia as soon as I get them :)

C&C and any ideas alway welcome!

Looks like Space Crusade parts. That brings back some memories,

that’s what got me into 40k in the first place biggrin.png

Finally I've finished converting my Heldrake and now have it uncoated. Just gotta get some paint on it!

You don't get any warning when it strikes ;)

Honestly I can never do them right, and I'd rather have a paint job I'd be happy with on the model.

A kind soul did point me in the direction of a tutorial but I'd already started and would prefer to practise on something else. I could always come back to it.

Thanks for the kind words though

Some Pre-heresy work now, sorry it's a bit washed out, too many light colours.

First Up, Lance Sergeant Sinon

Thanks tonal. It's really easy actually, bolt gun metal (now leadbelcher) ghennas gold for the bronze, then a heavy nuln oil wash over everything and a silver for a bit of highlighting

Thanks Geordie, never stopped, have a squad of tactical marines to back up Varro and have a rotor cannon squad too. Will get some more pics up when I get chance, just wanted to give 40k a bit of time too
