Korhal; a world of derelict, frostbitten mountain ranges, steely grey seas wracked by storms and low, verdant grasslands.  Merely three hundred years ago, it was rediscovered by the Imperium of Man in a state of fuedal war.  At some point in its past, the Ork had found its way onto the planet's surface.  Their initial invasion must have somehow been defeated, but as is so often the case, their spores had infected the planet's eco-system and every few decades, they would decent in hordes from the impenetrable wall of rock that formed the poles.

During these times, the warring fuedal lords would temporarily cast aside their greivances, as unification was the only way to fight off the superior might of the Greenskins.   To this end, and because of the abundance of ferrous materials and need for constant martial discipline, a large percentage of the populace trained permanently as soldiers under the various clans and houses of their lords.

When the Imperium eventually came to Korhal, only one or two of the planet's lords were vain or foolish enough to resist conversion and they were quickly and horrifically made an example of.  The rest were only too quick to fall into line and Korhal became another Imperial world.  Only a few years later, a space marine chapter claimed the planet as its own, ostensably because of the populace's knightly warrior culture.  They constructed a fortress monastary on the northern hemisphere and began the recruitment process for their scout company.

Most notably about the chapter was the low number of remaining initiates and the blank, steely armour they wore, devoid of markings.  In fact, their name prior to adopting 'Swords of Korhal' after their new home is not known, nor their origins.  Because of their winged sword markings, some speculate some connection to the Dark Angels, and certainly the zeal with which the Swords pursue their targets can be likened to their tortured bretheren.  Yet others draw connections to the Iron Hands, due to the number of artificiers and Techmarines within the chapter.  They do have an abundance of mechanical prosthetics, but this is more down to a love of metal than a contempt for the flesh.

This black hole in the chapter's history is enough to foster distrust in other arms of the Imperium.  Yet there is no denying the zeal with which the Sons of Korhal hunt down and purge the enemies of the Emperor.  Even if their definition of 'enemy' is sometimes deserving of scrutiny.  There are scattered reports of clashes between the Swords of Korhal and various Imperial Guard units, though there are never any survivors left to corroborate these accusations.

Greetings, brothers! I hope that intro wasn't too rambling, but I'm a bit of a fiend for fluff. So, the Swords of Korhal, looking resplendant above me there. This is my first attempt at a coherant Codex:SM chapter and I wanted to go with something original while allowing myself to use the lovely DV minatures. As you can see, the colour scheme is very regal, but with bright and violent-looking splashes of red so that they don't look too dandy. I'm quite happy with the results and I plan on painting lots more before I call it a day. I'm also going to post a few battle reports on here to show how my boys are doing as they develop. As always, I appreciate any and all comments, be it compliment or criticism and I shall try and get around to answering any questions as soon as I can. But first, more pictures to show off!

http://i.imgur.com/DyeiI.jpg

The Vindicator, Triumph of Tiberius crashing through rubble to bring the fight (and much hurt) to the enemy. So far, it's made a couple of amazing shots but not survived to see a game through...

http://i.imgur.com/QtXg9.jpg

A close-up of my army's pride & joy, Terminator Squad Flamberge. Consistantly, every game, these guys have chewed through a mountain of opponents and weathered a hurricane of firepower! I'm really happy with the paint job, too...

http://i.imgur.com/ino3M.jpg

The painted members of Sternguard Squad Scimitar, Scout Squad Rapier and the Chaplain, Tiberius. I only wanted to include what I've finished and these guys are still on the painting table for the most part. Whilst the Scout snipers have yet to yield many results other than being really, really irritating, the Sternguard have proved very adept at targeting an enemy's most valuable unit and erasing it.
Unfortunately, my Chaplain doesn't see any action these days, but I love the model so he gets to stick around!

http://i.imgur.com/FgTSt.jpg

My first complete Tactical Squad, Squad Broadsword. I went with the DV standard kit-out, bar the Sergeant, who has swapped his expensive plasma pistol for a more practical bolter (and a manual on how to use it, presumably!). So far, these guys have been really good at staying alive and holding objectives, but not a whole lot else, really.

Well, that's it for now! I shall work on a battle report shortly as I've just finished duelling with the puny Guard and the game was a stonker! Meanwhile, let me know what you think.

EDIT: Pictures were a little large, so I cut them down. Should be okay now!

EDIT 2: Changed background fluff.  Still working on it, though!

Very Interesting!!

I applaud your love of the fluff and your models look AWESOME!!

That said you might want to tweak the story a bit. Give a better reason for using the gene seed....

Just a thought take it where you will :tu:!!

Regardless thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the input, brothers! Yeah, the backstory was kind of an off-the-top-of-my-head jobbie... I will definately give it a look at a later date! Meanwhile, have some violence!

Battle Report 1: 1500pts vs. Imperial Guard

The deposed tyrant of Karthas was able to escape the ring of PDF and Valhallan forces around his capital through a series of bribes, feints and a daredevil shuttle run over an artillery detachment. It was damaged in the process, landing roughly in the hinterlands outside his base of operations but close enough to a local space port that he was in immediate danger of being lost to Imperial retribution. The Swords of Korhal chapter, who made the initial assault on his palace were sent to find him, but on the way, encountered resistance from the Valhallen MCXI 'Fortas Fortunas' who had been dispatched to deal with 'the downed shuttle of a vital Imperial aristocrat' and escort him off-world. Seeing their chance to bring justice to the tyrant slipping away and only meeting a wall of red tape when trying to deal with the guard, the Swords of Korhal decided to push through the Valhallan line and deal with the traitor themselves.

The Valhallans, however, were not to be so accomodating...

-From the logs of Brother Lionheart. entitled The Forging of the Sword

Mission: Capture & hold objectives in each deployment zone.

Status: Space Marines deploy first, go first. Turn 1 Night Fight rules.

Space Marine (quick) roster:

Master of the Forge, Terminator Squad, Sternguard Squad in Drop Pod, Tactical Squad (plasma), Tactical Squad in Rhino, Scout sniper Squad, Vindicator, Predator, Stormtalon

Imperial Guard (quick) roster:

Company Commander, 2 Infantry Platoons (6 squads, autocannon teams), Hellhound, 2 Scout Sentinels, Manticore, Leman Russ, Leman Russ Demolisher

The Swords of Korhal deployment.

As you can see, only a handful of models are present on the table. I was hoping their various staggered entrances would keep the assault portion of my army safe from the Guard infantry's withering firepower until they were ready to strike.

http://i.imgur.com/C7vtO.jpg

Imperial Guard frontline deployment.

By contrast, the Imperial Guard deployed en masse, hoping to bring their heavy weapons to bear early and take my forces apart piecemeal before I could get close enough to retaliate.

TURN 1:

The Space Marines get first turn and quickly move to engage the hapless Valhallans. The Rhino carrying Squad Gladius with their flamer and heavy bolter combo moves up to the ruins ahead and pops smokes, better to weather the inevitable storm of fire. The Vindicator, Triumph of Tiberius rolls steadily up to the nearest piece of cover, lining up the shapes of an advance squad through the morning gloom. The rest of my army is happy to hunker down, with only a quick reposition by Master of the Forge, Lancier to get a better look at the enemy.

http://i.imgur.com/ROrlT.jpg

In the first shot of the game, the Vindicator beats the night-fighting odds and almost wipes out an infantry squad heading for my objective. Only the bewildered and shell-shocked sergeant is left standing and somehow neglects to run away! Perhaps the blast concussion knocked out his common sense...

Shooting is minimal thanks to the low visibility, but the snipers manage to thin out and pin another encroaching infantry squad with help from the Master of the Forge.

The Guard's movement involved a few squads rushing the objective, most notably the 30-man 'blob' squad on the left flank backed up by their company commander's Chimera and the Demolisher rumbling forward, presumably to contest the Vindicator. Their shooting is equally ineffective, until...

http://i.imgur.com/pvsUY.jpg

Defying the odds, every single shot directed against the in-cover, smoked, barely visible Rhino manages to strip a piece off it. And to add insult to injury, the squad inside is pinned. The Emperor weeps for turns like this...

Still, the game is far from over.

TURN 2:

Salvation comes for the Swords of Korhal in the form of Terminators and Sternguard. With a world-shattering thud, the Sternguard's drop-pod lands directly in the Imperial Guard's makeshift command center, disgorging a squad of heavily-armed, well-drilled veterans into their midst. My opponent begins to visibly sweat.

The Terminators, meanwhile, are tasked with stopping the huge and somewhat threatening blob squad on my flank. Their teleport insertion goes down without a hitch and they materialize next to the shocked guardsmen, guns cycling. Elsewhere, my Vindicator lines up a closer shot on it's Leman Russ counterpart and Squad Gladius pick themselves up from the ruined Rhino, stumbling into the ruins next to them. They have a long slog ahead of them if they're to take the objective, but I have little doubt they're game for it.

http://i.imgur.com/6rOam.jpg

In the shooting phase, Sternguard Squad Scimitar does what Sternguard do best. A combination of flamer and Hellfire shots reduce the Company Command squad to a spattering of ash and bloody welters, effectively cutting the head from the snake. They even manage to clip the infantry squad holding the objective with a template. This, combined with the bolter fire from their insertion craft is enough to force a morale check. Now leaderless, the cowards make a break for it, running right off the table! The Terminators reap a bloody tally from the 'blob' squad, killing a total of 11 guardsmen. Backed by a fearsome Commissar, however, they elect to stand firm. I do not relish the inevitable return fire...

Unfortunately, that marks the end of my effective shooting phase. The snipers continue whittling down another infantry squad, while nothing manages to even scathe the Demolisher looming over my stricken Tactical squad!

http://i.imgur.com/wYISC.jpg

Squad Flamberge to the rescue! The Terminators soak up fire from not only the blob squad (with the benefit of first rank fire, second rank fire) and their command squad, and their chimera, but the autocannon weapon teams and an enraged sergeant, too! They lose a single Terminator to melta fire, but all told, are set to wreak even more havoc next turn!

However, the rest of the guard's shooting is somewhat more effective. A Manticore missile fired with deadly accuracy pulverizes the Vindicator in a pillar of flame which only manages to slay three guardsmen in the process! A bargain by anyone's standards, but a crippling loss to my forward offensive. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Imperial Guard reserves arrive, too.

http://i.imgur.com/AEEbG.jpg

A meagre two Sentinels, I scoff. Until they unleash hunter-killer missiles right into my autolas Predator's rear armour, instantly turning it from a precision firebase to a molten pile of burning slag. Well, frag. To make matters worse, the Guard seek vengeance for their commander's loss. Heedless of the danger to his own men, the rearmost Leman Russ turns and unleashes its battlecannon on the Sternguard. The devastation is total, wiping five of the marines from existence and damaging the drop-pod. However, Sternguard are as immoveable on the offensive as they are when holding the line, and the last 2 members refuse to flee.

Despite inflicting heavy losses on the Guard, the Marines have taken a beating. They need something to turn the tide... something that can swoop down and rain the Emperor's fury on the Guard's big guns...

That vendicator is amazing. How did you do that? Looks fantastic, keep up the good work

Thankyou, brother! Honestly, there's no real secret for freehanding. You need a steady hand and patience, but mostly I do alot of work on 2-dimensional media anyway, being an artist. One thing that might help, if I find it much easier to highlight up from a dark background than to shade down. Especially if you highlight gradually, so you can work around any errors in positioning or size you think you've made at an early stage- they won't show up once the highlights are applied.

There are some really nice painting guides on this forum, so my best advice would be to check them out!

TURN 3:

Screaming like a caged daemon, the supersonic form of the Stormtalon, Wrathchild bursts into view, cannons spinning wildly. The Terminators advanced on the poor remaining guardsmen and the two surviving Sternguard charge the Leman Russ that slaughtered their comrades. Squad Gladius advance through the ruins, stoically wading into the sights of the Demolisher. Seeing an opportunity for carnage, the massive tank prepares to fire...

http://i.imgur.com/1wwks.jpg

And explodes! With a sound like a Mechanicus work team at full pelt, the twin assault-cannons on the Stormtalon shred the Demolisher's rear armour and detonate it's ammo storage, scattering it in all directions. The flaming wreckage scythes down several nearby guardsmen, into the bargain. Seeing victory on the cards, the rest of the army surges forward. Reshuffling their firing stance, Squad Broadsword fires on the outflanking Sentinels, stunning one and chipping off a hull point. The Terminators gun down more of the blob squad while the Sternguard loose an ineffectual combi-melta shot against the Leman Russ while prepping their krak grenades for the charge.

http://i.imgur.com/op5qT.jpg

Looking to finally finish the massed guardsmen, the Terminators charge, shrugging off what little overwatch fire actually zeroes in on them. They easily slaughter the Valhallans after the Sergeant neatly slices their Commissar's head off. The Sternguard meet with less success, unable to find any weak points for their charges.

http://i.imgur.com/dmpqk.jpg

The Tactical Squad, Gladius meet with more success upon charging the Hellhound that futilely attempted to burn them before. A few grenades into the fuel tanks sees it go up in flames that cook the crew in a cacophany of screams. Running out of expendable troops, the guard remnants make one last push to force the Space Marines back, trusting in their big guns to win the day. The Manticore manages to miss, though. The Leman Russ finishes off the Sternguard, but the real prize goes to the Chimera-mounted command squad.

http://i.imgur.com/RmqWI.jpg

Their meltas finally claim a Terminator and one fails his 2+ save against an autocannon, but the squad stands resolute. (Note the poor Sergeant who lost his squad in turn 1. Driven by grief and madness, he charged the Terminators in a glorious, hopeless last stand... and was nonchalantly backhanded with a power fist.) Few Space Marines have died, but each one is keenly felt. Still, can the Guard still stand after such horrific casualties? Can they deal with the rampaging Stormtalon?

Stay tuned to find out!

My camera absolutely rejects the proposition of photographing that siege shield for some reason... but this turned out okay, I think. Since that freehand is getting so much love, I plan on going to town on my Stormtalon, too (no doubt giving it the dreaded Shiny Model Syndrome in the process!) I'll post up some WIP pictures after the battle report- only one more update for that.

Is that a killa kanz on the right side of the siege shield? Very interesting look.

It is! One of the old style ones I use, along with a few of my Orks. They are very fond of checks and dags! Being a power-armour forum, I won't show them off here, but maybe I could sneak a few models in for flavour the next time I'm photographing my marines?

Again, thanks brothers for the compliments!

Welcome back to the battle report! We left the valiant Swords of Korhal mopping up the Guard infantry while desperately trying to stay clear of their big guns. The game hangs in the balance; if the Guard can drive the Marines back from their home objective and re-occupy it, they can turn their attentions to my own deployment zone and maybe pull off a win. On the other hand, if the Swords can silence those guns, their Tactical squads will have a clear run for the enemy objective. So far, they've pulled off Slay the Warlord and First Blood and look set to add Linebreaker to the victory roster.

TURN 4:

The Wrathchild weaves around sporadic Guard anti-air firepower, lining up another shot against the artillery. Meanwhile, squad Gladius pushes over the burning wreck of the Hellhound, their armour proof against the conflagration. Squad Flamberge circles the Chimera that took two of their brothers, ready to tear into it with their ranged weapons.

http://i.imgur.com/gJO6v.jpg

(sorry for the terrible quality in this picture)

The Swords' shooting phase is merciless, kicking off with the Stormtalon ripping the Manticore missile launcher to shreds. It doesn't even use its missiles- (and hasn't had to, yet!) the punishing salvo of assault cannon rounds detonates one of the remaining warheads in a ground-shaking explosion that erases the tank. As if that weren't bad enough, the Master of the Forge unleashes a long-ranged Conversion Beam on the Leman Russ that cost me my Sternguard squad. A strength 10 hit on its comparitively weak side armour tears right through it, hurling the wreck high into the air as its magazine goes off. Squad Broadsword prove they can shoot, too, their Plasmacannon blasting apart a Sentinel's cabin to leave the disembodied legs smoking comically in place. The rest of the squad manages to put a dent in the other Sentinel and its enough to make them lose interest.

http://i.imgur.com/4PQvA.jpg

Squad Flamberge fail to do anything other than dent the Chimera with their firepower, so they charge in. A vicious uppercut from the Terminator's power fist launches the Chimera skyward and it comes down hard, the transport bay torn right open and spilling stunned Guardsmen. However, they are able to get their wits together in time to turn their guns on the Terminators. Flamberge's luck holds, though, and the meltas miss entirely! One of the squad's lasguns comes very close to felling the Sergeant- t'would be an ignoble end to such a valiant squadmate, but luckily the laser pen... er... laspistol just misses his eyesocket.

There is little the guard can do in response: Futilely, the autocannon teams turn their guns on the Stormtalon, but are unable to hit it, let alone pierce its armour. With their tanks gone, the few remaining Guard infantrymen can do little to slow the Space Marines' advance and their turn ends quickly.

TURN 5:

It's game over for the Guard and turn 5 consists of mopping up their ground forces.

http://i.imgur.com/dV7HA.jpg

The Stormtalon, with little to threaten it, goes into hover mode and mercilessly guns down the autocannon teams, while Squad Gladius finally secures the enemy objective. Broadsword finishes off the remaining Sentinel and Flamberge butcher the Guardsmen trying to remove the wreck of a Chimera from their heads. At the end of Space Marine turn 5, the game is well and truly over!

FINAL SCORE-

Imperial Guard Victory Points: 0

Space Marines Victory Points: 10 (2 primary objectives, Linebreaker, First Blood, Slay the Warlord)

TOTAL SPACE MARINE VICTORY!

Afterthought: Well, that went well! The game was actually alot closer than the victory points would have you believe. The Guard lost many objectives and their Warlord very early on, but their overwhelming numerical superiority, not to mention those scary tanks, looked set to rectify this very quickly. It was only really the timely intervention of the Stormtalon and some nice shooting by the MotF that denied them victory. Indeed, they had no trouble in eliminating my own armour, who performed very poorly under fire. No, the real heroes in this game were the infantry, slogging through a metric tonne of enemy fire to claim victory! Once again, I cannot understate the value of Terminator squad Flamberge, who absorbed half an army's firepower turn after turn and still managed to account for 36 guardsmen, a Commissar and a Chimera!

All in all, the Guard played well and my opponent was gracious in the face of an unfamiliar army walking all over his poor boys. (Incidentally, if anyone frequents the Boot Camp Imperial Guard forums, he can be found on there as Private Standard. His Valhallans are up to 4000 points or more and are all lovingly-painted classic minatures- a real treat to play against!)

A great game with plenty of lovely bloodshed on both sides... I hope you all enjoyed following it as much as I enjoyed playing!

----

It was approaching evening when the exhausted Governor Siphonas was practically driven forward out of the sparse woodland cover by his surviving bodyguard. How had this happened? Almost half of his vast personal fortune had changed hands to make escape possible, and yet still the Valhallan fools had opened up on his escape craft! How dare they, those unwashed philistines?! Once he got off this Gods-forsaken planet, he'd bring them to account, oh yes. Right now though, all he could think about was his laboured breathing and the tantalizingly close form of the space port looming ahead of him.

Suddenly, there was chaos. Two of his entourage were gunned down from behind, high callibre explosive rounds pulping their silk-wrapped torsos like overripe fruit. His bodyguard shoved the despot out into the open and assumed a crouched firing position, his pilfered lasgun banging deafeningly as crimson shots were loosed back into the gloom of the woods. Panicking, the despot ran, the spaceport a shining sanctuary that seemed so close and yet so impossibly far away.

He risked a glance back just in time to see his bodyguard come apart in a welter of bloody viscera. The scream of ramjets hit about the same time as the fussilade and a wide, winged shape soared overhead, spitting death. Mercilessly, the line of tracer rounds scythed right past the despot, trailing off as the craft pulled up, then came around to settle ahead of him. Its searchlight clicked to full beam, all but blinding the tyrant even as he threw himself to the ground, whimpering and struggling with little success to retain control of his bowels.

If he'd dared to look behind him, he'd see that the Stormtalon's searchlight had illuminated the forms of Chaplain Tiberius and his bodyguard as they advanced on the stricken tyrant, bolters at the ready. The form of the Chaplain was at once magnificent and dreadful, gilded iconography wedded to skeletal motifs and a grinning skull-helm. Even over the howl of the Stormtalon's engines, the Chaplains menacing tones were as clear and full of threat;

"Governor Siphonas, I presume? We have gone to much trouble to locate you, 'my lord'. You will be accompanying us, now."

The massive skeletal gauntlet of the Chaplain reached down to haul Siphonas to his feet and just before he blacked out from terror, he could see the sanctuary of the spaceport reflected in the cold green of the Space Marine's eyes. A sanctuary he would never, ever reach...

Model Progression No.1; Stormtalon

I realize that for a WIP thread, there hasn't actually been alot of work in progress, so far. Just alot of finished models and poor quality battle photos. Well, with the recent performance of my Stormtalon, I've decided to change that.

http://i.imgur.com/VeT69.jpg

Here's the model as it is. I've gone for a thorough drybrushing of Leadbelcher over a black undercoat, which takes me back to my old Ork painting days. Don't get me wrong, I don't tend to drybrush models very often, especially not infantry, but my Vindicator benefited from it and I think this might, too. A solid paint of metallic would look too 'flat', even with a wash or two, I think. I plan on drybrushing a lighter shade in less quantity over this, too.

I made the controversial decision to spray over and permanently glue the cockpit canopy to the model. Don't ask me to explain why, but I've never been a fan of having transparent plastic on a model. The plan will be to freehand a reflective surface on there instead.

Anyway, onto the plans;

http://i.imgur.com/QPwH4.jpg

This is a particularly quick and lazy drawing to show my plan for the colour scheme. I'm not 100% on it, which I knew would happen the first time I tried to organize it. My first colour arrangement for the Vindicator was a disaster! The thing looked like a patchwork Ork tank, not a neat and orderly Marine vehicle. Anyway, what do you guys think? Maybe less gold around the cockpit? Less red on the turbines? I dunno, I need to play around with it.

http://i.imgur.com/MBK7I.jpg

Next up is the planning for the freehanding. I figure the tops of the wings on either side and the rear undercarriage/dorsal wing are the best spots for work, since they have the most surface area, even with a few lines to interrupt it. I'm tempted to fill those lines in, but worried I might not do a very good job or that it might detract too much from the model's character. Either way, I have a few ideas for the freehanding design.

http://i.imgur.com/N6tIG.jpg

I decided to put them down on paper first so I'd have a vague idea of what I was doing when it actually came to painting. Again, the Vindicator was a good lesson for me in this. I did a rough doodle of the initial idea, but I think if I'd taken more time to plan, it would have come out much better! Going with the name 'Wrathchild' for the model, I was originally going to have a two-headed eagle holding onto a sword in mid-swoop, but as I was drawing, the eagle became a cherubim. Maybe I just wanted to deviate a little from the standard Imperial iconography, what with the chapter's loyalties somewhat in question, and more towards the naming source for the vehicle. In any case, I think it's going to look pretty cool!

As for the wing design, I'm less excited. A feathered wing is going to be alot of effort to paint, very hard to mirror and will probably look a bit mundane. I think I'll return to the drawing board for that one, but it would be nice to have some kind of motif on the wings. Maybe something simple that I could replicate for the undersides so that a device will show from the front whether it's hovering or not (gotta love those repositioning wings!).

As always, I appreciate any feedback and thoughts you might have, brothers.

EDIT: General rubbish spelling

Amazing freehand on the tank there and some really nice bold colours on the marines very well applied.

Glad your DV termies are performing well for you. Played 3 games with mine, the first they landed where they should have and caused havoc the second and third they've mishaped and been deployed on the corner of the board miles away from anything else. My AOBR termies are my stars and a lot more dependable it seems.

(Still won all three games mind you but hey silly termies)

Cheers
