Horus Heresy Audio

Lots to report here. It seems as though Black Library will be releasing at least one audio drama per month in 2013, with 4 of these planned for the Horus Heresy. However, I have got details of more than 4, so these may run into 2014.

Honour to the Dead by Gav Thorpe – this is the audio version of the short story released in German for the German Games Day chapbook. It will be released to coincide with the Mark of Calth anthology, a collection of short stories following on from Know No Fear. This contains three threads; one covering a human (as opposed to Astartes) interest story; the second focusing on Ultramarines trying to get to a rally point after the Word Bearers ambush; and the third detailing a titan battle (yes, you read that right, a TITAN BATTLE!!).

Vengeance by John French – this will focus on First Captain Sigismund of the Imperial Fists, as he has to deal with a group of Word Bearers stranded in the Sol system (the system that Terra is in). Apparently, this will be the first time Sigismund has to fight and kill other Astartes – *spoiler alert* something that he becomes rather good at!

Thief of Revelation by Graham McNeill – this will follow on from the novel A Thousand Sons and covers the choices that Magnus, Primarch of the Thousand Sons, faces and what drives his decision to join Horus’ rebellion.

Wolf Hunt by Graham McNeill – this follows on from the novel The Outcast Dead, and covers the hunt for the surviving Luna Wolf, Sevarion (I think) by the assassin, Nagasena (again I think).

The Sigillite by Chris Wraight – not many details about this, but it will form part of the story arc known as The Secret War (more of this in a later blog).

Censure by Nick Kyme – not sure of the spelling, and I have no details at all on this.

Limited Edition Novellas

Again, lots to report here. It looks as though there are 4 limited edition novellas planned for 2013. The really good news is that these will be available on limited time release like the previous novella, Brotherhood of the Storm.

Scorched Earth by Nick Kyme – set on Istvaan V after the dropsite massacre, and after the traitor fleets have moved onto other campaigns, this focuses on a group of loyalist survivors and specifically a pair of Salamander marines searching for their Primarch Vulkan, who is missing and assumed dead following the massacre.

Tallarn by John French – this covers the massive tank battle mentioned in Bill King’s short story (covered in one of my earlier blog posts) on the planet Tallarn. Apparently, and the author was very explicit in this, the battle involves 10,000,000 tanks. Yes, ten million!

Corax by Gav Thorpe – a follow on to Deliverance Lost, this will feature the Raven Guard assaulting an Adeptus Mechanicus forge world under traitor control.

Cybernetica by Rob Sanders – a story about loyalist resistance to the Dark Mechanicum forces controlling Mars.

Novels

Even more goodies here! The Black Library intend a schedule of 4 full novels per year, and again I have more than 4, so it’s possible some of these may fall into 2014.

Betrayer by Aaron Dembski-Bowden – another follow up, this time to the audio drama Butcher’s Nails. This novel features both the World Eaters and Word Bearers assaulting the Ultramarines on their homeworld of Macragge. It will heavily feature Khârn, hence the title, but also expect lots of Angron and Lorgar (Primarchs of the World Eaters and Word Bearers respectively).

The Mark of Calth anthology by various authors – this follows up on Know No Fear with a number of short stories set both during and after the battle for Calth. Includes;

- Calth that Was by Graham McNeill

- Athame by John French

- The Shards of Erebus by Guy Haley

- The Underworld War by Aaron Dembski-Bowden

- Unmarked by Dan Abnett

Shattered Legions anthology by various authors – this focuses on the three legions shattered during the dropsite massacre – the Salamanders, Iron Hands and Raven Guard – and their response and actions after the incident on Istvaan V.

The Silent War anthology by various authors – this covers the war in the shadows, and may involve the Sigillite, assassins, and the psychological warfare aspect. No real details, but I expect to see the Alpha Legion feature heavily for the traitors.

Vulkan Lives by Nick Kyme – this will follow on from the aforementioned novella, Scorched Earth, and (if the title is to be believed) covers the finding and subsequent actions of Vulkan, Primarch of the Salamanders legion.

Unremembered Empire by Dan Abnett – of all the forthcoming titles, I believe this will be the most significant and it’s definitely the one I am most looking forward to. This follows on from a number of stories, specifically Know No Fear, Butcher’s Nails and the Mark of Calth anthology, but also ties together a number of loose ends that have been deliberately plotted in various books, such as Fear to Tread. This will mark the start of the Imperium Secundus story arc (again something I intend to cover in a future blog). I don’t want to give too much away, but the artwork for this novel is stunning in it’s depiction, and brilliantly shows a number of different emotions from the various loyalist participants.

The Black Library Weekend has finished and the big announcement to close the show was that they are producing a Horus Heresy Graphic Novel.

This will be a 100 page Graphic Novel written by Dan Abnett and illustrated by Neil Roberts.

The story will follow on from Know No Fear, and be the story of Kor Phaeron being chased by Marius Gage after fleeing the Calth system.

The Horus Heresy Graphic Novel will initially be a limited release that will later be converted into a staple of the range and will match the format of the Horus Heresy Hardbacks

The Graphic novels will be all new content. No revisit of current books, there will however be the possibility to revisit and take another look at old battles, for example, a future release will be a return to the battle for Prospero from the perspective of the Space Wolves written by Gav Thorpe and illustrated by Karl Richardson.

Also Interex will be back.

There will be more non-Marines perspective novels, maybe even an eldar one.

Garro's audio will come in a printed format.

C Z Dunn is writing about Traitor Astartes meeting with Caliban Angels.

Short story by Dan Abnett from Mark of Calth is going to be about Oll Perrson.

VULKAN LIVES!!! Thanks for this, pretty good looking year to look forward to now. Imperium Secundus story arc sounds interesting. I guess it's something to do with the Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Dark Angels meeting up, maybe fighting against Angron and Lorgar depending on how Betrayer ends.

I wish Tallarn wasn't a limited edition novella though, that's one of the most well-known battles of the Heresy.

A lot of that is looking very tasty to me. I must echo Perrin however - Tallarn really should be a full novel, rather than a novella imo. There's a hell of a lot of explaining and narrative that could be attached to that battle.

Oh, I forgot....

Unremembered Empire cover art

"And here, Sanguinius, is one that looks like you. Do you like?"

"Yeah, Horus. It's... great."

:o

Edit - Actually, looking more closely at that picture, that might not be Horus, there. Derp. It might be Guilliman though, I think...

Here some info from one of BL's editors:

Confirmed novels, novellas and audios, with release dates where announced:

BETRAYER - Aaron Dembski-Bowden - Jan 2013

Angron and Lorgar smash up Ultramar. Not a sequel to Calth, so much as a parallel storyline. "Big unknown event" takes place during this novel.

MARK OF CALTH - ed. Laurie Goulding - Apr 2013

Anthology featuring stories from the Ultramar side of the war, for years after Calth. Confirmed are:

1) 'Calth That Was' (Graham McNeill) novella which links Remus Ventanus to the 40k Ultramarines continuity, along with Maloq Kartho before he becomes a daemon prince.

2) 'The Shards of Erebus' (Guy Haley) showing how Erebus learned to do his warp-travel thing, and where he got his athame dagger.

3) 'Unmarked' (Dan Abnett) following Oll Persson as he leaves Calth.

4) 'The Underworld War' (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) showing the expansion of the Gal Vorbak, and how they realise they've been left for dead by their Legion.

5) 'Athame' (John French) which is apparently a very "odd" story, following a particular knife. All we said was that it's not Erebus's knife.

Also confirmed are Rob Sanders, Anthony Reynolds and David Annandale.

HONOUR TO THE DEAD - Gav Thorpe - Apr 2013

Audio drama set during the invasion of Calth. Two Titan legions fight for control of a city, wiping out whole regiments of Army troopers and civilians almost by accident. Contains continuity links to "other new 40k projects".

KNOW NO FEAR - hardback collector's edition - Apr 2013

CENSURE - Nick Kyme - ???

Audio drama featuring Aeonid Thiel, set after the battle for Calth.

VISIONS OF HERESY - Alan Merrett etc - "mid-2013"

This is not so much a reissue of Collected Visions as a complete reworking. Loads of new artwork, all corrected background material and loads of new text from Alan himself. All of the Neil Roberts covers will be included, as well as new concept art and close-ups. This also covers almost all of the Horus Heresy novels so far, as opposed to just the old edition canon.

The format will be A5 hardback to match the HH series. It will be released simultaneously alongside a limited edition, which matches the larger Forgeworld books exactly.

VULKAN LIVES - Nick Kyme - ???

The clue is in the title! Although left for dead, Vulkan has survived Isstvan V, and this story explains where he has been and why he hasn't been found earlier.

UNREMEMBERED EMPIRE - Dan Abnett - ???

This is the "Imperium Secundus" that has been hinted at so far. Ultramar is fortified as a second Imperium, because Guilliman honestly believes that the Emperor is dead. Sanguinius is to be crowned as the new Emperor, which doesn't sit well with all present. There will be a "massive superhero style battle" which Dan never expected to see in the Heresy.

This is the first book in a wider arc, as part of the Age of Darkness.

MACRAGGE'S HONOUR - Dan Abnett/Neil Roberts - Nov 2013

Full colour, 100-page graphic novel, hardback to match the rest of the HH series perfectly. This will NOT be available in partwork, nor split into comics, and is being produced SOLELY by Black Library. It follows the naval duel mentioned in 'Know No Fear', between Marius Gage and Kor Phaeron.

This will be available in time-limited edition with extra content, as well as non-limited edition later.

VENGEFUL SPIRIT - Graham McNeill - ???

Novel.

WOLF HUNT - Graham McNeill - ???

Audio drama which explains the rather abrupt ending of 'The Outcast Dead', and the supposed timeline "error" which everyone thought they had spotted. Severian is hunted down by Nagasena in the Petitioner's City, as he tries to follow the original plan to escape Terra.

THE SIGILLITE - Chris Wraight - ???

Audio drama which hints at who Malcador actually is, and what his role is supposed to be in the Emperor's grand plans. Also laying the foundations for the Webway War.

CYBERNETICA - Rob Sanders - ???

Limited edition novella, which shows what is currently happening on Mars. Techno-heretics are released from imprisonment by loyalist forces fighting a rebellion war on the surface against Kelbor Hal.

UNNAMED CORAX NOVELLA - Gav Thorpe - ???

Literally, what Corax did after 'Deliverance Lost', attacking a forge world which had begun producing daemon engines. Also described is a "battle" between two floating cities which "broadside" each other for weeks while assault troops jump back and forth between them.

UNNAMED WHITE SCARS NOVEL - Chris Wraight - ???

Following on from 'Brotherhood of the Storm', Jaghatai Khan makes up his own mind what to do in the Horus Heresy after Chondax - it's not the answer everyone is expecting. Also links to 'Garro: Sword of Truth' and explains why there were traitor White Scars near Terra.

Two more anthologies have been announced, titled 'SHATTERED LEGIONS' and 'THE SILENT WAR'. Laurie Goulding is announced as editing both of them.

Also, it was announced there at Christmas there will be THREE Horus Heresy mini audio dramas released through the website. These will not be available physically available on CD for the foreseeable future.

That picture totally looks like Guilliman and his Heartcrusher claw raising the hand of the very unhappy and reluctant Emperor Sanguinius.

Holy Ultra-Firestorm Batman!

And just when I thought Caesar got one-upped by Aurelius... Lets see if he marches on the Rubicon bold in his crimson cloak! We march for Macragge! *epic bro fist!*

edit: I CANT WAIT!!!!!

Sanguinius crowned Emperor?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? HOLY :P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This new story element is what I find so intriguing about this next phase of the HH series - shiny, brand new fluff that'll be unfettered by previously iterated material. Basically, some relatively free reign for BL writers to blow our socks off. -_-

I'm really excited about the next wave of the Horus Heresy books especially they since are now being released in Hardback. Ever since I got into the hobby 8 years ago know other story has captured my imagination quite like the HH does. I'm going to make sure to pick each one of the hardbacks (And the novellas if i can) so I can have a full collection.

The cover of Unremebered Empire is interesting indeed, I wonder if this is all going to play on the idea of

"Imperium Secudnus"

that was hinted at in age of darkness. Especially since Angron and Lorgar are crusading to Macragge, could it be that we will have two sieges of the "Imperial Palace" in one series? :P ;) Here's hoping we'll get to see some primarch duels in "Betrayer".

Traitor White Scars, nice twist. 'THE SILENT WAR' could be referring to Cypher? He said these words in Grey Angel i think, at the beginning.

I'm getting ever more suspicious these days that BL has been pinching ideas I've worked on... :D :)

Well since it isn't copyrighted....... But yeah, you're not the only one who's ever thought of that.
