2700pts Ultramarines....maybe going for 2500

I Tricked you, first comes the rant. I have many doubts as i don't understand how such choices should fit a list.

First thing I "noticed" (mind the quotation marks) is Assault marines and the price: maybe a little but overpriced to me, while 4++ Termies are way cheaper...Then twenty men strong Tactical squads which i love, without reasonable transport options apart from the 10men Rhino. WTH, am I supposed to walk for an hour under fire or spend at least 200pts for a transport ? Then what about Seeker squads ? What's the point if not for fluff and when you want to throw another 200 into something funny in a 3500pts game...Boarding teams ? Makes sense in campaign games but not when you can swap for Assault marines.

Just some examples and there's a huge percentage it's my problem not to see the solution. I am finding these and other issues putting down a list and I could really use some clear sight on the book choices...

This is my work till now:

Legion Praetor---------------170 pts

Cataphractii Armour, Paragon Blade, Digital Lasers

#joins Cataphractii squad.

Legion Centurion------------95pts

Master of Signal Consul in Artificier Armour

#joins heavy support squad.

-----------------ELITES---------------------

Cataphractii Squad------10------360pts

Plasma Blaster x2, Sgt w/ Power fist

Legion Rapier ------3------165pts

Laser Destroyer Array *

Contemptor Dread Talon-----2-----450pts

Kheres + Melta, Drop-Pods

-----------------TROOPS---------------------

Tactical Squad------20------310pts

CC wpns, Sgt w/ pwr wpn & artificier

Assault Squad------20------440pts

Combat shields & 4 pwr wpns

Sgt w/ pwr wpn & artificer

Tactical Support Squad------10------355pts

Drop-Pod, Melta guns, Sgt w/ artificer

---------------Heavy Support--------------

Heavy Support Squad----9----370pts

Drop-Pod & Melta \ Missiles

2700pts

*

How does the Laser Destroyer works ? I don't understand the weapon profile, since it looks like a laser with four barrels but Heavy1 and Ordnance...

P.s.

Sorry for the rant...

The laser destroyer's profile is correct, in the fluff it states that the four barrels fire microseconds after each other to create a deadly shot that can burn through armour.

Looking at your list, I thought drop pods could only be taken if you took the appropriate rites of war (and so everything needs to be able to drop pod/deep strike)?

Why are you looking to drop pod in your heavy support squad?

Yes there are some fluffy units in there that are not particularly competitive, but the game is designed with campaigns and fun in mind, not tournament play. I fully intend to field a breacher squad being led by a centurion in most battles where possible as I'm playing iron warriors and I feel it suits the army. Is that a good idea tactically, probably not, but it sits right with how I feel the legion behaves.

I agree about the lack of suitable transport for 20man squads. Short of forking out for a spartan/storm thingy (which is royally expensive) there's no way to transport them around. Maybe in future books they'll change that?

I have noticed that on the FW website there's a Heresy section now, and a subsection tanks of the heresy, in there is listed the Gorgon transport vehicle, which can carry 50 guard in others rules, so perhaps in future there'll be a unit listing for taking it and it can carry 20+ marines?

Hope this helps

I can see Seeker Squads being useful - BS5 and re-rolling 1's against a chosen unit pretty much means that you're not going to miss. Throw a couple of Combi-Plasma in there, too, for a really nasty turn, and they get to keep all their special ammo to boot. Like many of the units, it's only when you bulk them out that you get a decent points cost per Marine (which I assume is to avoid min-maxing as much as possible in an era when it was more unlikely to exist).

As any Chaos player can tell you - footslogging it is (there's not even the option for a larger capacity LR in the CSM: Codex).

Thanks for the help guys, I'm happy to read that fun could have taken its place back in the game.

Why are you looking to drop pod in your heavy support squad?

Because i copy/pasted the wrong one

Legion Praetor---------------170 pts

Cataphractii Armour Paragon Blade

Digital Lasers #joins Cataphractii squad.

Legion Centurion------------95pts

Master of Signal Consul Artificier Armour

#joins heavy support squad.

-----------------ELITES---------------------

Cataphractii Squad------10------360pts

Plasma Blaster x2 Sgt w/ Power fist

Contemptor Dread Talon-----2-----380pts

Kheres + Melta

-----------------TROOPS---------------------

Tactical Squad------20------310pts

CC wpns Sgt w/ pwr wpn artificier

Assault Squad------20------440pts

Combat shields 4 pwr wpns

Sgt w/ pwr wpn artificer

Tactical Support Squad------10------355pts

Rhino Melta guns Sgt w/ artificer

---------------Heavy Support--------------

Heavy Support Squad----9----320pts

Melta \ Missiles + Flak

2430pts

This is what I "should" be taking with me, BUT I'm not convinced by the Tactical support squad and the Consul in that setup.

Also I would like to make a Recannaissance squad fit in while the Contemptors could be a little overkill for what i need...

What's the point of it then ? I see the AP1 as only difference with a normal Lascannon. I don't remember the difference and the difference it makes with "Ordnance" rule. How does it work in-game ?

That what I've been told this morning by a Chaos player

Ordnance 1 means 1 shot using the Ordnance sized template doesn't it? That should be reason enough to take it over lascannons ;)

You can also swap the vindicator cannon for one of these as well you know ;)

All the units with a "#" get a drop pod: in case of the Rapiers each one of them is getting one as from Pod rules, while the ass squad is not required to have one as they have DS rule already.
